Was summarily disappointed on my recent trip to my friends in the mariemont area when we drove 20 minutes out from the city, to try what she said was a staple she had been going to for years now. I don't know if we picked a bad day, or weren't welcome, but we were completely ignored at the counter for a good 5-10 minutes. When a guy did come up to take our order he was flippant, and wouldn't answer any questions I had being from out of state. The prices were absurd, I get it's suburban Cincinnati and rent is high but 6 donuts is $17.50 Drinks are 4-5. Felt like I was getting weird looks the entire time I was in there, maybe because I'm not a local? I'm not sure. There are just better bakeries where you don't feel like you're doing something wrong by trying to give them your money. It's a basic strip mall donut shop, that's trendy and overpriced. I heard about Marcella's from a fellow Yelper who raved about it, and it absolutely lives up to the hype! Everything I've tried here has been delicious and fresh, but you've got to get there early on weekend mornings if you want a shot at the really, really good stuff. Of what I've tried, here's a ranking: - Cronut. Iconic, flakey, mile-high perfection topped with a cloud of cream cheese frosting. Delightful. If they have them, get some. - Pumpkin spice Cronut. A very close second that maintains the charm of the original but with a whipped frosting, spiced glaze, and pumpkin layered right into the pastry. An extremely good seasonal donut that's worth getting up early for. - Cinnamon roll. It's not too sweet, light and airy yet ginormous, with a bold cinnamon swirl. Good stuff. - Custard long john. I'm a sucker for filled yeast donuts and these are pretty good. I haven't tried the cream version but I suspect it may rank even higher. - Sprinkle yeast donut. A solid bet, with the fluffy texture of the cinnamon roll but the fun of sprinkles. - Reese's chocolate cake donut. A great option if you like cake donuts, chocolate and peanut butter. Generously topped! - Blueberry cake donut. Strong blueberry flavor and a good coat of glaze. Maybe my least favorite of what I've tried, but not bad by any means! read more

Cute donut shop! Came here with my dad and nephew in a Saturday morning. There was a steady flow of customers. The 2 ladies behind the counter were very nice and helpful. They definitely had a lot of donut options. I got the carrot cake donut, which was a little dry for my liking. My nephew loved his chocolate donut (of course!) and my dad tried a cronut for the first time. Next time I want to try a long john, a blueberry cake (my normal go-to donut), or one of the yeast donuts. They all looked so good! read more

Cute, trendy donuts with all the fixins. You can get a cereal loaded donut, Girl Scout cookie inspired or regular jam filled. Ive seen their donuts at different events and they're super trendy; this was my first time in the actual shop. Kiddo wanted a traditional donut with sprinkles, which she loved. I had a jam filled donut with sugar on top, man it was sweet but also yummy. The couple that owns/operates that shop were so kind and friendly. They knew customers by name. The gentleman enjoyed playing peek a boo with my daughter. This is the quintessential mom and pop donut shop. Three stars because I wasn't overly blown away. It is nice to have wet wipes nearby but I wish they weren't on the table. I just don't like staring at dollar store wipes while I eat. The cronuts were the big hit- I would get a dozen of just these next time! But they are smaller than the rest of the donuts. Service is the high point of Marcella's Doughnuts and Bakery. While we were there, 80% of patrons were greeted by name. The woman behind the counter asked children she seemed to know about various activities that happened earlier in their week. We were traeated with a similar amout of warmth. On each table was hand sanitizer and cleansing wipes. With how sticky doughnuts can get, that was very thoughtful touch. The doughnuts were too sweet for me. When I think of doughnuts sweet is what usually comes to mind. These took sweet to a whole new level. Many of the doughnuts that were available were frosted or iced AND topped with powdered sugar. This was definitely a treat to get to try out the Marcella's chain in Cincinnati. The cashier was very excited to talk about the donuts that were available and I had a look around to see the variety that they had, and they had quite a variety. I ended up getting a cream filled long john, a smores donut, and a buckeye cake donut. While the long john was delicious, it was very lacking in the cream department. The smores had the ingredients set up for a smores, but it was put on a vanilla glaze, which didn't make it worse mind you! Just a different variation of a smores donut. The buckeye donut was the best, having a good combination of chocolate and peanut butter. I would definitely want to try out more of the Marcella's variety and will hit this place up again in the future. read more

How I desperately wanted to love this place based on the reviews but before we get to the bad (the donuts) let's highlight the good which by far was the sweet, friendly older woman that greeted us. When we told her it was our first time there, she gleefully told us about almost every donut in the case. She was so excited for us to try them and based on her enthusiasm, we were too! We got there at 9:30am on a Saturday and there were plenty of sweets available so we got a mix of items to try. We each got a chocolate cream stick, our own donut we knew the other wouldn't like (red velvet for him and maple bacon bar for me) then we got a cronut, and chocolate peanut butter cake donut to split. First was the cronut and it was hard and dry. The hubby didn't eat his and I kept eating hoping it would get better... it didn't. This was sadly the theme for all of them except apparently the red velvet but I didn't taste that one. When portly folk throw away donuts, there's a problem. I could forgive it if it was later in the day or only one maybe two but FIVE out of six?!? Nope. So thanks for the delightful customer service but unfortunately if we're in town again I can't justify coming back. Sigh. read more

There are usually good donuts at Marcella's, but the past few times I've visited, some of the donuts were definitely dry and stale. When you're paying more than a dollar per donut, the expectation is that they are fresh. I visited on a Friday morning - peak day for buying for coworkers, so there really isn't any excuse for the quality. I live dangerously close to Marcellas and this is not good for me or my diet plan. I've really been craving some donuts lately and I decide to get myself and my boyfriend some donuts before a previous Saturday gym session. Like most bakeries, the close at noon so I went about an hour before they closed and they had only about three or four rows of donuts left but still a wide variety and selection. Reading others reviews I have seen their hours fluctuate depending on the supply and so I was honestly expecting to go in to nothing so I was pleasantly surprised. I was just planning on getting us just a donut for each of us but after seeing their options, I decided to get us each two. I mean come on you're staring at a display case full of donuts, how can you not resist. I asked the man behind the counter what some were and he mentioned two of them were Reeses and Butterfinger flavors. SOLD. Reese's for Zach and Butterfinger for Sam. Then I saw what looked like a blueberry donut which I always have a weakness for blueberry so i added that to our bag. He then pointed out two strawberry donuts, one was strawberry and the other strawberry streusel. I quickly added his recommendation and he said both were delicious but the streusel is more unique. Then before I could even answer he said, "you know what, I will give the fifth one free just so you can try them both." Oh I like this guy! For under $5 dollars, I walked out with 5 donuts and I couldn't wait to get back home and try. We both started with the Reeses and Butterfinger options. They were tasty but nothing spectacular. My butterfinger was more just like a chocolate frosted donut and I don't like peanut butter so I can't say much for the Reeses expect Zach did enjoy his. We then split the blueberry and that is where the magic happened. Blueberry never does me wrong and it was once again not a disappointment in this Marcella's Doughnuts. We didn't have the strawberry donuts until the next morning so they were a day old but still good and the streusel was the definite stand out among the two. I really enjoyed my first trip and taste of Marcella's. I am so happy to live so close to a local bakery that I am already planning my next trip to taste some more of their flavors. read more

In fairness to Marcella I've only ever had her donuts about 8 hours after they've been made and sat around all day. And they're still the best damn donuts I've ever had. Yes, that includes Holtman's, yes that includes fresh "red light on" Krispy Kremes, Busken, whatever you want to put up against them. Marcella has consistently delivered amazing tasting donuts with a huge variety and selection, at great prices. Cake or yeast, glazed, dipped, drizzled, fritters, filled, jelly, custard, whatever the hell you're looking for - they do it and they do it very very well. I'm not a big sweets guy, rarely eating donuts to begin with, but sometimes the urge strikes - and Marcella is more than capable of hitting the spot with these awesome donuts. If I needed a few dozen for an event or hungry fam, I would hit her up first thing in the morning - get the best selection before the hungry mobs get there. Disclaimer: I'm writing this based on their customer service for large events. Their donuts are spectacular. If you need a box of deliciousness on a Saturday morning, go to Marcella's. HOWEVER, if you're a bride-to-be or if you're interested having them cater a larger event, let me save you some time: don't. We reached out to them in February about catering our wedding in September, and they said they could accommodate us. I slowly started getting the impression that they were pretty disorganized. The owner, Carmen, wouldn't call me back for days or weeks regarding details and always seemed frazzled or confused when I called. It made me nervous, but I was still hopeful they would work out. We asked if they could do a cake-sized version of their cronut, and they said they would experiment with it, so we scheduled a trial run. If it didn't work out, they would give us a call that morning to let us know. I was a little nervous they might forget, so I called a few days beforehand to make sure we were good to go. Thank goodness I decided to call again the morning of the trial before making the 40-minute drive out to Amelia... Carmen had no clue as to how or why, but there was no cake-sized cronut to be found in the store. When I tried to express that I was disappointed, she immediately got defensive, saying her son had been up until 2am making donuts and she wasn't going to call and ask why it wasn't done. When I once again tried to explain that I was just disappointed because she hadn't called us to let us know, she interrupted me and told me that they were busy with an Easter rush and that our order just wasn't a priority for them right now. She then brushed me off, saying she would call me back after she figured out what happened and hung up. I never received a call back. My mom ended up calling a week later to cancel our order, and Carmen seemed confused as to why we wanted to do so. It's ridiculous that a business owner would tell any customer that their order "isn't a priority", on top of not apologizing at all. After that experience, it's pretty obvious that they aren't equipped to handle larger events, and I hope they either put a more organized system in place, or stop promising that service to others. read more

Since everyone is crazy for Holtman's these days (and I say that having been long familiar with the Holtman's in Loveland/Goshen) I thought I'd check this place out. I saw on the reviews for the Amelia location that someone complained the prices are too high, if you're looking for cheap grocery store quality donuts, you're not going to find it here. I got lost and ended up way out in the middle of nowhere. Like it's really easy to find. It's in a shopping plaza. I can't really see to drive in the dark, so I was focused on trying not run into a ditch or something. Well, good thing, because I didn't run into a ditch. I did drive past the donut shop, though, and I kept driving and driving. No big deal. I finally turned around and found the shop. The sun was rising by then. Look, it's really easy to find. I suggest looking at a map first. Are the doughnuts good? Yes Are the doughnuts the best? Yes Would it be worth making a special trip just to go to Marcella's? Yes OMG the donuts. OMG they are so good. They're so good. These are the best donuts. Are there better donuts in the world? I don't care. These donuts are amazing. The pastry part is perfect.
