Sometimes, you just want a really good doughnut. A little treat to satisfy the ol' sweet tooth. Does this spot deliver that? Yes, and then some! So many ways to get your doughnut fix. I rolled into this spot with a couple co-workers to get some goodies for the road back to work. We were greeted right away by a very friendly employee (whose name I unfortunately forget, but she was awesome). The place itself it decently sized, with a few tables to sit down, but seems mostly carry out. They have a plethora of different doughnuts, cronuts (they sell out FAST), cookies, pies, danishes, and more. Need a beverage to go with your baked goods? They've got you covered there too with coffee, milk, soda, and water. I opted for a custard-filled doughnut (kinda like a Boston cream, but even better) and a bottle of milk. The doughnut was fantastic! Light and fluffy with rich and decadent custard inside. It really hit the spot! Next time I'm in the area, I may be tempted to stop by again for another treat. We are new to the neighborhood and stopped in to try a couple doughnuts my wife had her sights set on... well what started out as just a couple ended up as 7... this place has these things called cronuts which are ! The lady working was super helpful with making our selection and getting the best bang for our buck. All tasted great but our absolute favorites were the kettle cooked as well as the cronuts. The donuts here are always fresh and delicious. Being a small business, you often will see the owners working the counter, and their additional staff is always helpful and friendly. On the last donut place I hit up last Saturday, I went to another Marcella's Doughnuts to see if they were just as good as their nearby location. They had two cashier's there, one asking if I had been there before. After I said no, she went over a few of the donuts with me. I picked up a fruity pebbles donut, a cinnamon roll donut, and a cookies and cream cake donut. These are fairly sized donuts mind you, so you'll get what you pay for. The fruity pebbles were fresh on the donut. The cinnamon sugar on the donut was sweet and very delicious. The cookies and cream was my least favorite, but that isn't really bashing it as all three were very good and gave me a sugar rush. I will say I prefer their yeast donuts to their cakes, and you can get that same cookies and cream on a yeast donut as opposed to a cake if you want! I definitely hope I can take my friends to this place. The charm and donuts were top notch. read more

Once I experienced Marcella's, I was hooked. I tried Marcella's for the first time a while ago and now that my new job is close enough to Marcella's it's a hard fight not to go in and get some yummy donuts. I broke down and went in and got some donuts; my stomach was happy. I got a dozen; which includes original glazed, red velvet, fruity pebbles, chocolate cake, and a couple that were gone so fast I couldn't even remember which ones I got. Another bonus is that a dozen here isn't like other donut places. They give you a true bakers dozen of donuts. Which feels like you are getting a true bang for your buck. After all the great ratings I thought I would give them a try. Walked into the Clough Pike location at 9:15am, the selection was to say the least minimal, I ended up leaving with Glazed and twists only, and I wish I had left them there as well. If what I received is considered fresh, I would hate to see what they call day old. I had to put my doughnuts in the microwave for 20 secs to soften them, right out of the box they are hard and stale. What a huge disappointment. I don't mind paying $9.10 for 6 doughnuts if they are fresh, but to pay that for stale doughnuts, that's just a rip off. Marcella is daughter of Mr. Holtman, the now legendary Holtman empire that got started with its humble beginnings by Mr. Holtman out in Goshen right off of Hwy. 28 as you are leaving Mt.Repose/Milford. Marcella's sister took over the biz when her dad died and has grown it into the empire you have seen on Food Network and may have visited down in OTR near downtown Cincinnati. Marcella also started her own humble shop down Rte. 125 out of Amelia originally as Marcella Holtman's donuts, but has since dropped the Holtman name and has continued to branch out and put her own signature onto delicious donut-ness. Marcella, now sans the Holtman name has been able to successfully grow her business into 3 donut shops at the time of this review, including one in Mt. Carmel and the original in Amelia. This Eastgate location offers the same great donuts as the other 2. While the Holtman donuts are good in their own right, Marcella's Doughnuts ventures out on its own with more specialty and whimsical creations like their Cronuts and Fruity Pebbles topped donuts. They also all of the traditional yeast and cake donuts of usual variety, long johns, jelly filled and the like. The staff are often family members, grand-kids, etc. and they are always nice and helpful. Please consider supporting this family owned shop instead of the usual stop at Dunkin or another chain. You will not be disppointed you did. Get there early as well because once they are gone for the morning, they are gone for the day. read more
