We loved our meals! First off I am always impressed when the wait staff do not write down our appetizer and meal choices and later our dessert choices and there were no mistakes. Four of us came to the Maple Tree Cafe for dinner on a Friday evening, when a Talcott Mountain concert attracted almost everyone else in town. We were seated promptly, greeted, given regular, beverage and daily special menus. Maple tree used to be a dive bar that I frequented many many years ago...but has since greatly upgraded their atmosphere, bar, and food offerings. I ordered a cup of NE clam chowder, and their Fish n Chips - I've been having a fish jones for a while since our go-to place in Hartford closed last year. The chowder was decent, perhaps a bit on the thyme-y side, but still enjoyable. We also ordered a meatball appetizer, served with a ribbon of marinara sauce. Yum! My Fish n Chips hit the spot, with four nice-sized chunks of well-cooked fish on a bed of curly fries...all steaming hot. Served with Cole slaw and tartar sauce, it was quite satisfying. Our server and plate runners were both very nice, and responsive to our requests. All in all, a delightful evening. We shall return! read more

4.25 stars. Perhaps they were really on the day I visited, but I have no complaints about Maple Tree Cafe. I found the older gentleman who greeted us, recommended items for the menu, and treated by dog very well to be incredibly pleasant. The pizza was actually superb for the price with a nice crisp and a fun and tasty bolognese and ricotta topping. The beer menu was far better than it needed to be with a great offering from local brewery Back East on draft as well as Larson's in a can. The patio was a nice place to enjoy a beer and pizza while catching some rays in the Connecticut sun. I would definitely go back here. Excellent beer, excellent pizza, excellent service, and outdoor dog friendly on a sunny day. That's pretty much all I need to be happy. read more

I've gone here 3 times in the few months each time thinking that I just caught them on a off day. Each time every meal is very underwhelming. The Greek salad was a sad little salad with a few tasteless olives diced up very small. Small portion & tired wilted lettuce served with a plastic cup of dressing on the side. I love Greek salads and this was by far the saddest llittle salad I'd ever seen. Panini sandwiches were small portions and served with room temperature French fries. Burgers were just ok and again, served with room temperature fries. They weren't busy when we were there so there was no excuse. The last time I went , 3 of our meals came out and we watched the waitress stand there holding the 4th meal while talking to another customer at the bar. We sat there not wanting to start our meals till our friend's meal came over. Final we were able to catch their attention and another little panini arrived. Stopped for a quick dinner around 6:30pm on a Thursday and it was quite busy. Still no wait however. I ordered the fish and chips. It was mediocre at best. Pretty sure it was frozen and deep fried. My husband ordered the beef and cheese panini. He said it was tender. The service was adequate and the ambiance was ok. Dark enough that I couldn't read the menu. My opinion is mixed. I wouldn't rush back or try to impress anyone with a visit here but yet it's a good laid back get a quick bite to eat and have a drink kind of place. read more

Had an AMAZING time at the Maple Tree Cafe tonight. Sat at the bar and was served by Ken who provided great conversation. Ordered fried mozzarella as an appetizer and had a chipotle chicken bacon panini, both were fantastic. My girlfriend ordered the pulled pork Mac and cheese which was also very good, and we shared a cheese pizza which is one of the best in the area. We left with plenty of leftovers. Nothing beats the food, the atmosphere, the people, the servers, the events, just everything! I feel so comfortable just showing up for a quick bite and glass of wine by myself. The servers are so down to earth and so genuine. They make you feel relaxed and like family. Everything on the menu is delicious. I have a few favorites now because I go about once a week. Try the french onion soup, the shrimp scampi, the chicken marsala, and of course, the burgers. One of my favorite parts of the cafe is the events. I enjoy the stage and performances just as much as a quiet night with a glass of cabernet. Enjoy! read more

Such a cozy atmosphere! I had the fried asparagus appetizer - SO good!!! The butternut ravioli was the best I have had. It felt like fall in a bowl! I tried the house G&T from the cocktail list and as a G&T fan, I absolutely loved it! Service was very prompt. I didn't feel like I waited long for anything. Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Everything from the dining hall to the bathroom was spotlessly clean. Went with some girlfriends and will definitely be going back with my husband!!! This is the type of dinner where you want to bring the owner over to see how you could mess up an otherwise lovely dinner. Case in point: We arrived at the end of the dinner rush on a Sunday evening and got seated outside. No problems yet. Except no menus. Waitress MIA. We flag the waitress; she gives us attitude like "I'll be a minute". Well, it's already been nearly 10 minutes for us. Finally get the menus from waitress. I'm not sure she cares that we are there. No smile. No chit chat. No nothing. Does the server care that this is our first impression of the place? Is she trying to lose business for the restaurant. We get our drinks and she takes our order. By memory. Oh, lovely. (Note: Serving at a restaurant is not a game show. Get the order right every time.) After a wait, we get our dinner salads and bread. They're good and nice hot bread. Maybe we'll make it through after all. And then the wait. And wait. We wait well nearly an hour after we ordered for our dinner. There were very few people waiting at that point so assume it's the kitchen. Then they bring out a wrong dish. Finally, after a few minutes more, the rest of the meals come out. (My guess is that the kitchen made the wrong dish and held everything until it could make the right dish.) Kids burger and fries is fine -- except there is a pool of pickle juice on the plate where a pickle perhaps was (and then removed.). Not good for the kid. And here's the thing: The food is really good. Loved the sausage and chicken (plenty for leftovers the next day); the scallops with risotto is a hit too. The ciopinno and the shrimp scampi were all devoured. Sitting outside the deck, it's one of the best outdoor experiences we've had. Really enjoyable. But I really wonder if we'll come back anytime soon. The service needs work; the waitstaff need to be retrained and the kitchen needs to get its act in order on food. Which is a shame, because if you want good food and drink, I'd probably have recommended this for you. But now I'm not positive. Sigh. read more

Had a nice lunch there today. The restaurant was pretty empty but the bar was very crowded with regulars on their barstools, ringing the bar like a picture frame. Its a pretty ambitious menu with nearly 20 appetizers ranging from inexpensive (garlic bread for $2) to wings (15 pcs for $13) and from the ordinary (fried mozzarella) to the unexpected (crab cakes). We had a Cobb Salad ($11) and a Chicken Quesadilla ($10). The salad was good, but in an average-good way. The Quesadilla was advertised as being served with sour cream, guacamole and salsa, but when it came out of the kitchen, the guac was missing. We asked the server about it, and she said that not everyone likes guac, so she doesn't bring it out unless it is specifically asked for.. Thats a minus one point. The salsa was fantastic, and when I mentioned to her that I liked it, she chimed in that it was home-made -- so they get that deducted point back. We asked for the leftover quesadillas to be boxed up, and when she brought them back from the kitchen, she said she added some extra guac for us. That's a bonus point. I checked out the dinner menu and saw a lot of chickens and veals and pastas and chops and seafood in the $13 - $20 range. Not cheap, but not out of this world high either. I might have to stop back on the way home from work on Thursday- in honor of the start of the baseball season, they have an Opening Day special-- $2 beers and you keep your Yankee or Red Sox glass. The food was good. The service was sort of good, but in their defense, they were slammed. We had to grab our own napkins (not the end of the world - they were pretty much right next to us), and when our food was served had to ask for utensils. If we had been able to get our own, we would have. My biggest disappointment, however, was the lack of representation of local craft brewers. There are two breweries in Simsbury, and it would have been nice to see them support businesses in their town. City Steam beer is good, but they are a more than well-established brewery. I was drinking Naughty Nurse 25 years ago. How about giving a shout out to some of the newer kids on the block (especially the two in Simsbury)? Amazing food and service! I started with the fried calamari, which was excellent. My main entree was the scallops and risotto - very well cooked and fulfilling. Have been going to see music and have dinner for years and always been happy. Tonight my wife and I were harrassed by a man who was disruptive and threatened us when I asked him to quiet down after over a half an hour of him being obnoxious. He threatened me and my five month pregnant wife by telling us he'd hurt us if we talked again. The bouncers looked at me and shrugged their shoulders. The manager apologized and said she would try and help, but he's the son of the owner so she can't do anything. She gave us a free dessert and apologized to us outside the bar and even cried to us about how horrible he is on a daily basis. My wife was so scared she left the bar after she went to the restroom and texted me from the car. I will never go back, and it's sad because I like the place but I can't go there and feel unsafe. I'm truly sorry to post this as I love to support local business but this is inexcusable. read more

Missed one of our drinks from the bill and then we had to do two transactions. Kitchen was closed. We finished our drinks and went elsewhere. I doubt I'll ever be back. Will not be going back and sadly we were regular customers. Poor treatment by a manager on Friday, 8/10/18. Our waitress was great, there were 6 of us, ordering dinner and drinks. The server accidently spilled a bowl of tomato sauce all over a few of us, our bags, clothes, table and floor. No problem but the manager was rude. He refused to comp the appetizer (we sat with napkins all over the floor covering it for the remainder of the evening). He said we could send him the dry cleaning bill. We had to wait for replacement sauce. I had sauce in between my toes, down my arms lol. Sauce was everywhere. Food is ok but we won't go back. My husband and I have enjoyed dining here twice. This is a bit far from home for us, but worth the drive for an evening of live music and some good food. The first time we went was a Saturday evening with a blues band. It was hopping! I was amazed that our waitress was able to keep up with the demand for service, but she did it and with a smile. My husband is positively addicted to the new Impossible burger--a vegetarian pretender that is simply amazing. You'd almost be silly to go here for full price these days. That said, despite our $25 discount, our meal was worthy of the original price. We started with a fun appetizer of homemade meatballs, topped with homemade tomato sauce and ricotta cheese. With a side of cheesy garlic bread, it was a great starter. Then we dug into our sandwiches. My "Route 10" Pulled pork sandwich was nothing short of excellent. Served with carmelized onions and melted cheese, this pulled pork was so good on its own, it didn't need to be slathered in barbecue sauce. That's the mark of a good pulled pork. My girlfriend enjoyed her portabella sandwich. Clearly, Maple Tree has some Italian lineage in addition to their traditional pub fare. Further to the aforementioned meatballs, the menu features a host of veal and chicken dishes, and classic italian pasta dishes. Nice venue too. My wife and I returned to the maple tree after a long hiatus hearing it was now under new ownership. Cosmetically the place is more or less the same they did replace the old green carpet with nice wood floors which is a great improvement. The food is a huge improvement over the previous owners. I had the sirloin which came with a side salad. Was cooked perfectly and had a great portion size. My wife had the orange walnut salad which was huge and beautifully presented. Desert was the best taramisu I have ever had. We will def be back, next time I will def remember to make a reservation first. read more

Notice most of the past reviews are all based on outdoor seating. I just finished a meal with my wife just after New Years. Outdoor seating at 17 degrees isn't practable. We had a $25.00 Restaurant.Com certificate, which was the reason we decided to try the cafe. Walking into the bar, the atmosphere isn't the best. It's a bar with a stage for open mic on some nights and maybe weekend bands. Not sure. But it's not a place to go for a romantic night out. The meal was marginal at best. I ordered two appitizers. One was the crab cake which were perfect. The other was coconut shrimp. Out of 6, one shrimp was so over fried, it self destructed on my plate. Each appitizer was $9. Neither worth it's price. The main meals were a lamb gyro with a salad and the other was a small steak with mashed potatoes and a mushroom gravy. The Gryo wasn't close to par. My wife loves Greek gryos, this wasn't a good sandwich. The steak I ordered was cooked as ordered but was very small about the size of a hockey puck and just slightly more tender. The mashed potatos were old and dry. I couldn't believe they were freshly made. The meal was not something I'd come back to. The wait staff were perfect, however. The beer was cold. I had a Guinness that was perfect... So... my idea, since everyone seems to think outside seating is the way to go here... would be to come back in the warmer weather and just go for the appitizers and cocktails while absorbing the warm afternoon Simsbury sunshine out on the decks. Ryan and the team at Maple Tree Cafe did an excellent job hosting a memorial luncheon for my Father on the day of his funeral. The ease of scheduling/confirming the details was so refreshing, the food was delicious and ready exactly at the right time, and the restaurant was clean, neat and very comfortable. Very reasonably priced as well. He also was able to use a thumb drive of a photo collage in memory of my Father to create a slide show on a large monitor which played throughout the lunch. Three stars because the poor service unfortunately overshadowed the great tasting food. We went on a normal Saturday night, and was instructed to seat ourselves at one of three dirty unset tables on the patio. We weren't given a drink menu, and the server took about ten minutes to greet us. Despite the continually slow service, the food was very good. We ordered calamari which was cooked perfectly. Just the right amount of crisp without turning the squid into rubber. The bread was warm and very delicious. Even the olive oil tasted great. I got mussels in white wine sauce and was very impressed by the broth. Everyone else got pasta and seemed to be very satisfied. I feel the need to explain..... I feel Sunday's r a tough time for dinner plans in CT. Hot Tomato= closed. Peppercorns=closed.... So we changed direction completely and went for more pub dinners. We get there and before being seated we are made aware that they r closing the kitchen at 8pm that night. It's 7:47.... Do the math. As we plan to leave, the waiter asks us to wait, runs to kitchen and then tells us it wont be a problem..... Take my advice, leave when that is the case! I will say the best thing we had was the wine. Sorry to be like that. Oh wait, the side salad was excellent. Calimari was under cooked. It had great potential but think it was rushed. It needed a little more cook time. Also, for 10$ the portion size was very weak. Scallops and rusoto was ordered but had very little taste requiring a fair amount of salt and was a very luke to low warm. I had the chicken Milanese. Two pan seared pieces of chicken in a sauce that also required salt (which I never use) and some spaghetti. Potions were very weak for the price. $16.00 and received no love. I will return because I have had much better food experiences in the past. The tavern menus is the way to go. I just really wish we left right from hearing the kitchen was closing early.
