This review is really 4.75 for reasons I will explain but regardless of the 1/4 point deduction, Millwright's remains one of my five favorite restaurants in CT. The grounds, the old millwork setting, ambience and views just feel comfortable while still upscale. I prefer the main dining area to the tavern or covered walkway because you get a glimpse of the kitchen that consistently generates fabulous food with seasonal ingredients and re-imagined classics. Tyler Anderson is back in charge these days and his food is just really good Trusting in him we did the five course menu tour: local oysters with mignonette; cornbread with sesame butter; then one of those classics that has been played with a bit: tapioca pearls prepared to channel clam chowder with bits of bacon and herb! The next jawdropper was frozen shaved foie gras over a strawberry cream compote with pumpkin seed granola. The entrees (you get both) were monkfish schnitzel with a pickle and potato salad and seared strip with potato galette and cioppolina onion. Dessert was a panna cotta with strawberry and angel food crumble All of these were delicious and unique in there on way. Our table relished and discussed every course in an a way that was fun and social. The food made sing and think! The only knock was this: the menu had some redundancies with strawberries and soft textures: the tapioca, foie gras dish, and panna cotta were delish, we could have done without three dishes for people who can't still chew! Service was very pleasant but painfully soft spoken and could benefit from some more fine dining polish. These are minor quibbles. Two weeks later and we are still telling everyone we know what a terrific meal we had... This is a must go restaurant read more

We dined here yesterday evening to celebrate my husband's birthday. We had never been and made reservations to sit on the bridge. Pretty area but I was honestly thinking it was going to be more quaint and romantic. It was not. The area is somewhat narrow which makes tables spaced close together and it's really not that private. But the space is nicely decorated and if you sit on the right side (which we did), you're right in front of the waterfall. I would try the dining room next time just to compare. Our server Anthony was professional, kind of and accommodating. We started with cocktails - I had a creative gin drink called Dot Dot Dot. My husband loved his Old Fashioned - he meant to ask what type of bourbon they used because he thought it was very good. With the tasting menu - many of the options apparently change regularly though based off other reviews it appears there may be similar options from time to time. We started with their Johnny Cakes which the waiter said the restaurant is known for. Another reviewer ranked them a 7.5/10 and I couldn't disagree more. They were one of the tastiest bites I've eaten in a while. Crispy, buttery and divine. I thought they were to die for. Served with creamy honey sesame butter which was also delicious. My husband doesn't eat fish so for his amuse bouche he had a little puff served with cheese, that was amazing. For his first course - he had the Ricotta Raviolis. They were as beautiful as they were delicious. My amuse bouche was a tuna tartare that was a perfectly balanced bite. I had the Tapioca custard as my first course. The bacon was a bit too smokey for my taste and overpowered the dish in my opinion. It could have used a bit more liquid but it was a unique few bites. For our mains, my husband's porcini risotto was rich, creamy, and full of earthy flavor. I had the bass with cauliflowerini, golden raisin-caper gremolata, Marcona almonds, and a cauliflower purée--thoughtfully composed and very flavorful. The final savory course was a crispy duck breast with port-poached pear, port reduction, and sweet potato purée, which was beautifully executed. Dessert was a pomegranate pavlova--crisp on the outside with that perfect soft, marshmallowy center. A delightful finish to the meal. Overall, the dishes were not only delicious but also thoughtfully composed and visually striking. It made for a memorable experience, and we're already looking forward to coming back--maybe in a different season to see how the menu evolves. read more

Always a great experience! It's a little chilly in the enclosed bridge seating, but it's a really pretty space. Our food was delicious for the most part! The quinoa salad side dish was just okay, and my husband wished they took a temp for order on the salmon.. also the coconut tequila drink could benefit from a garnish, it was a little blah looking. I Visited this cute restaurant for a surprise engagement . 10 guess we're invited. We started off with tavern wings and oysters as appetizers. The tavern wings were sweet chili flavored and were delicious. I also ordered a sugar plum 1911 hard cider , which was delicious . Then We ordered off a special menu that they offer on Tuesdays nights. Which is 3 COURSE PRIX FIXE For / $50 per person To start I had the Ricotta Ravioli - (honey nut squash, pumpkin seed granola) it wasn't bad but just not my cup of tea . For my main course I ordered the Half Chicken -(caulilini, broccolini, almonds, lemon jus) and it was delicious. Last but not least for dessert I ordered the Chocolate Turtle Cake -(salted caramel, pecan nougatine) which was amazing! Actually was my favorite dish! Came here for a surprise engagement celebration with 10 guests. We started out with the Tavern Wings which came with a sweet chili glaze, buttermilk dip. The table also ordered Beausoleil Oysters with champagne mignonette, and lemon. I do not eat them, but they seemed to be enjoyed by the table There was a grand selection of wine and liquor to choose from, but I decided on the Lavender Haze mocktail; pineapple, lavender, lemon, butterfly pea flower with an added shot of grey goose. This drink went down very smooth, and was very good. Beak & Skiff '1911 Sugar Plum' was another drink we got. This is a more festive selection with hints of spice. On Tuesdays. They have a special meal, so we opted in for this seasonal rotating menu. We started off with the Ricotta Ravioli with honey nut squash puree, pumpkin seed granola. The combination of ricotta and squash had a nice Home cooked feeling to it. The Half Chicken with caulilini, broccolini, almonds, and lemon jus was very good. I especially liked the lemon jus For desert I picked the Apple Cider Bites with oat crumble, apples, vanilla cream, and cider reduction. It was underwhelming. I was expecting more than one donut hole for this dessert. But overall, it was pretty good. Chocolate Turtle Cake salted caramel, pecan nougatine was probably the best thing! This decadent, rich and creamy, chocolate with crunchy pecan nougatine was so good. I would definitely eat the dessert again. Service was quick and the waiters were attentive to always top off our waters. The ambience is perfect if you are sitting near the window. You can watch the waterfall and pond and maybe even the wildlife. read more

I am so excited to say I finally made it to millwright ! Located in simsbury and old mill converted to a beautiful restaurant . There's a beautiful waterfall that you can enjoy while sitting in the bridge area. However we sat downstairs by a fireplace and it was very warm and cozy perfect for a rainy day by the fire ! Love ! No matter where you sit the ambiance is perfect and the food is even better !!!! Our waitress was fabulous as well. She checked in frequently and made sure we had everything and answered all our questions . To start I got the rocks and rosé cocoktail ! Which I wasn't sure how Gin and rose would blend together .. however it was phenomenal ! All the flavours blended together beautifully and the touch of fresh lemon garnish on top was just perfection ! Honestly this was probably my favourite cocktail of all time ! Highly recommend if you like floral tasting cocktail because there was a splash of lavender giving it a sweet floral taste . For an appetizer we got the chicken and dumplings which had gnocchi mixed with chicken ( note can get this as an entree as well ) ! All the flavours blending beautifully , they used all fresh Ingredients and leaves you wanting more ! The presentation also on point ! Chefs kiss for sure . For the entree I got the half chicken with broccoli and with an Asian style twist ! The chicken was cooked to perfection and had a nice crispy skin ( I don't even how they did that ) but sooo good ! The Asian style sauce with peanuts just elevated the flavour and experience . Even the broccoli was cooked perfectly with great flavour. 10/10 highly recommend My husband got the duck which was phenomenal, the strawberry salad was just delicious . Food: 4.3/5 Service: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 4.5/5 After many years we finally had the opportunity to try Millwright's. We enjoyed a nice birthday dinner on a Sunday night at 6:30pm. The restaurant was less crowded than it was during our first attempt, and we got to sit in a booth in the main dining room. The booths here are not the typical two by two facing each other, but an elongated "C" or horseshoe type shape, which makes conversation from one end to the other quite difficult. We were also seated near a large eight person party that was loud and exuberant. The ambiance is rustic but classy. There are large windows overlooking a scenic waterfall. Service was prompt and courteous. The tapioca custard appetizer which tasted like clam chowder was creative and very fun to eat. The short rib was very tender, almost falling apart. The duck breast was very flavorful. I did think the exterior of the pork belly appetizer could have been crispier, but I recognized the good use of rice and cabbage to provide texture to the dish. The duck breast also could have had crispier skin, but the meat was very flavorful. The sauces indicated French technique. It reminded me of a similar dish I had at Batard in 2018. Desserts were satisfactory, though I preferred the almond mousse (which looked like a donut) over the rice pudding, which was soupy and porridge-like. I prefer rice pudding that is firmer, springier, and has more form and substance to it. It also said it comes with grilled mango, so I expected grill marks, but did not see any. It was quite sweet, though, which was good. One of the hosts was very helpful in taking a picture of us at the end of our evening. read more

We went for Mother's Day yesterday afternoon and as usual the food (kale caesar salad, ravioli, salmon, steak, carrot cake cheesecake) was tasty! We made reservations for 5:00 p.m. on a Saturday night for two to celebrate my husband's birthday. Since the restaurant opens right at 5:00, there was already a line forming and a bit of a wait as people piled in. We were seated at a lovely, two-person table in the enclosed bridge section of the restaurant. Nothing private, but nice. The setting was very pretty and elegant, with plants overhead and unique music playing--it had a really nice atmosphere. Service was steady--not overly slow, but not particularly fast either. We started with the biscuits, which broke apart easily and tasted good. I'd give them a solid 7.5/10. For our meals, we ordered the Millwrights Burger ($23.50) and the Roast Zucchini ($27.50). To my surprise, the zucchini was more expensive than the burger. The burger was substantial, served with a generous portion of fries, while the zucchini was simply one zucchini cut in half, topped with greens, and placed on a white bean purée. Both dishes were just okay--not bad, but not something I'd return for. We decided to skip dessert since nothing on the menu looked particularly appealing. Overall, the vibe of the restaurant was very nice, and the setting was memorable. However, the food didn't live up to the atmosphere, and for us, it wasn't worth returning based on this experience. read more

Millwright's is a New England cuisine restaurant in Simsbury, CT. It is located in a historic 1680 Hop Brook Mill. The owner is Chef Tyler Anderson, a Jame's Beard semi-finalist; he's also been on numerous television shows and owns several other restaurants. The ingredients are sourced locally and is farm to table. The dining options include tavern fare, fine dining, and a chef's tasting menu; French cooking techniques are used to create the meals. There are three areas to dine in; a special events space (The Loft), dining room & enclosed bridge, and 1680 Tavern. They also have Sunday brunch and Ta-Que Tuesday, which is a food truck with smoked meats and tortillas. I wanted to celebrate my husband's birthday so I made reservations about a 2.5 weeks in advance on their website; booking online was easy. The parking lot was easy to get in and out of; we found parking pretty easily at 5 pm. We sat at the enclosed bridge dining room and it was gorgeous. They had a kids menu and high chair as well. The servers were great, attentive, and friendly. We started off with cocktails. I had a tropical drink called Tropic Like It's Hot (I think) with an umbrella which reminded me of a scorpion bowl, it was delicious. The second drink I had was the Earth & Ember which has tequila, mezcal, sumac, beet shrub, and black pepper. My husband loved the old fashioned and rosé cocktails. Appetizer: we had the pork belly which came with crispy rice, cabbage salad, and herbs. The whole thing was incredible; I loved the lemony zesty dressing on the salad. Main entree: BBQ short rib which came with braised red cabbage, cauliflower puree, and mustard sauce. The short rib was melt in my mouth good, the cabbage had the right amount of citrus flavor, the cauliflower puree was unlike anything I've ever tasted. The meal was absolutely amazing. My husband enjoyed his burger and fries. My children had mac and cheese and a brownie; they loved it. I'm still training them to be a foodie and refining their palates lol. It was a great dinner and lovely spot to celebrate a special occasion or go on a date night. I loved the waterfall and the historic setting. Wow. 10/10 dining experience. I can't believe it's taken us this long to visit the infamous Millwright's. We came to celebrate our anniversary and the staff was so wonderful. We knew we wanted to do their highly recommended tasting menu ($85 pp). The price has scared us in the past, but I can now confidently say it's ABSOLUTELY worth it. Their tasting menu gives you a little bit of everything and it changes frequently. We were treated to items we probably wouldn't have ordered if we were just dining in, so make sure you're not a picky eater. However, we loved everything we tried, even the dishes out of our comfort zone like Foie Gras or Scallops. Our favorite item was their signature dish - the Tapioca Custard which is clam chowder that's taken to another level. The Johhnny Cakes were also perfection. And I can't get over how incredible the scallops were, especially as someone who thought they didn't like scallops. The drinks were some of the most unique drinks I've seen on a menu. I got the Yammin' Out which mightttt be my favorite cocktail ever. Tequila, mezcal, sweet potato and maple. Like, what even is that combo? Insane. If you can swing it, absolutely do their tasting menu. If you're going to splurge, this is the place to do it! An incredible experience and that we're still raving about the next day. We went for anniversary dinner date and it was an amazing experience. We made a reservation for the bridge and it was beautiful despite no waterfall. I had special requests due to pregnancy precautions and they were very accomodating. We started with biscuits and chicken and dumplings. Chicken and dumplings were exceptionally delicious with just the right amound of smoky. For our main course we had flank steak and duck breast along with sweet and sour potato and brocolini/caulini. Millwrights for Christmas Eve was the most perfect choice. They had four courses with the most amazing choices. Our first choice crab Louie, it was beautiful crab on small dive with small pickles with the sauce and it was just delightful. Second course I had the smoked pork belly with brussels sprouts in Cipollini onions it was absolutely incredible bursting the flavor. Third course I got smoked short rib, which was on a risotto. I think it was a mushroom soda. It was absolutely delicious. The flavor so rich. My husband had the smoked prime rib with truffle sauce and scallop potato square, which was incredible with a depth flavor. The course of dessert was just out of this world. I got the miso cake with delightfully marinated oranges, mandarin oranges and crumbles cake and crack cookie and Taste was so exotic free gluten free. It was such an amazing experience. My husband got the an eggnog cake, which he just loved. Tylenol have to say this was the most incredible meal that we've had at Millwright's in a long time every Dish surpassed the other and we would highly recommend. Recommend me going there for any special occasion, especially on holidays. They really go out of their way to make you feel feel a guess. We had an amazing way to meet Anthony. A very pleasant experience. Sometimes a very creative menu can make dinner exciting but with a hint of discomfort. Here at Millwright's, I was able to tell that Chef Flagg provided this creative menu but I never needed to pick at anything. Despite never having the specific dish before, everything just came together so well and nothing was discomforting about it despite not 100% knowing every component of the dish. I bring this up because typically at these type of restaurants with the special exclusive menus from my own personal experience, a solid 50% of my four (4) person table always ends up picking at their food or saying "it's good but just a little too much" and by too much they mean complicated. They wish it was simpler or they complain their dish just didn't need "that". My experience here at Millwright's came down to a solid 4 for 4, each plate was wiped clean despite every single one of us blindly ordering something we've never had anywhere else. The food is just that good. I had the Braised Short Rib with cavetelli, parmesean cream and sunflower seed pesto. Never had this dish before and had no idea what to expect. It was hard to describe except for the fact that everything worked and the flavors/textures all came together so well that it just felt right. I ate this dish like I've been eating it my whole life. It was perfect. The short rib was cooked perfectly as it essentially melted like butter and the parmesean cream was light enough for me to feel like I'm eating something healthy without sacrificing flavor. After trying everyone else's dishes as well as the Pork Belly and Biscuit Appetizers (the biscuits are to die for), I started to get a feeling of "I can order anything on this menu and never be wrong" kind of vibes. Everything was just that good. Combine a meal like that with the rather classy and calm atmosphere and the prices are justified (IMO). You definitely pay for the classy farm to table experience and adding desserts and appetizers, not cheap but if you can afford to do the full course meal, I would. However, I did find this restaurant a bit quiet, and not the lively atmosphere that I tend to prefer. Despite that, service was on point. It was my first at this restaurant and I was impressed! We got reservations for The Bridge which is the room overlooking the waterfall. The ambiance was lovely, cozy and warm! There was a wedding when we went (Saturday at 5pm) and the restaurant was pretty busy the entire time we were there! Make sure you make a reservation time in advance. The food was delicious! Ordered the pork belly to start and it was juicy, meaty and cooked just right! For our entrees, we ordered the Swordfish Schnitzel, the fish was cooked to perfection. Also ordered the BBQ' Short Rib and OMG that has to be THE BEST dish on their menu! It's amazing!! The have a wonderful wine menu and very interesting cocktails and mocktails. "What's up?...I'll be with you when the young lady returns" That's how I was greeted when I sat down at a window table by the waiter Ron as I sat down at the table, so that was unusual choice of words to start off the evening. My wife had went to use the bathroom before joining me. After my wife came back and the waiter returned he asked us "have we met before?" which made us look up at him and see if we recognized him, but he was only implying if we've been to the restaurant before. Not the type of behavior to receive when going out to eat and pay for service at a restaurant where it's expected to be classy and professional. If I want casual small talk and quips, I can go to the food truck next door. We are young professionals in our early 30's who came to celebrate something and mark an occasion, and do not expect to be treated like we came to eat at some diner. I ordered a vodka martini with Ketel One without vermouth, when it came back it did not taste as it should've, so not sure if they used some kind of cheap olive brine or a well-Vodka or maybe the olive brine had vermouth in it. I sipped on it reluctantly for the alcohol content and finished it before the main course, the waiter never asked how the drink was, or if I wanted another one during the whole course. When ordering our food, we were in the mood for some burgers, my wife had ordered one and when it came my turn I asked the waiter how were the burgers if he'd recommend it, he said "Eh, it's kind of like a kids choice" and tried to upsell a different dish. This is right after my wife had ordered one by the way. This was pretty insulting to her and again was very unprofessional. I appreciate the honesty, but should be worded in a more appropriate way. Plus if you don't recommend it, don't put it on your menu. I ended up ordering the burger anyways because I was in the mood for it and because he just insulted my wife in ordering one, so I wasn't going to get something different and leave my wife with a "kids choice" to eat while I ate a more expensive dish. The burgers turned out great by the way. The fries were delicious. Another big no-no was the waiter extending his arm to touch my wife on the shoulder as he was saying something to her during the ordering process, and then he also touched me later on my back in one of our interactions, sort of like a pat. I hope there was no intention in it, and probably just his way of "connecting" with people, but there is no situation where any waitstaff should be touching a customer in any way unless some emergency or by mistake. Again Very very unprofessional! With this review I just want to let other future customers to be aware to watch out for this kind of service and behavior and hopefully management will do an inservice to re-educate all wait-staff in proper manners. First visit was incredible. Lovely combinations, flavors; great attention to detail both on the plate and on the floor. Second visit, meh. Similar menu but less enchanting. Both times, I tried the duck breast; first time a delightful pairing of flavors, sauces; second visit: some archly wrong flavors that clashed ... with some overwhelmingly vinegary effects of what seemed to be pickled crabapples ... From my area, the trip is a bit sinuous and lengthy and the second visit just didn't meet our expectations based on our first meal there. Probably won't be hurrying back any time soon read more

We have never had a disappointing meal at this restaurant, and after dining here for the first time on a holiday, we all agreed it would be fitting to do so every year. The dining room features a scenic backdrop of what is presumably the river that once powered the preexisting mill. The main dining room is well suited for a formal setting, while the other dining spaces can accommodate a variety of occasions and needs. The ambiance was very nice, refined, and elegant. Millwrights is hands down one of the best restaurants in CT. Chef Tyler Anderson is a masterful chef who understands flavor and texture perfectly. The tasting menu is both reasonably priced and well portioned. Some of our favorite bites were the Tapico custard with all the flavors of clam chowder and the scallops with farrotto. I will say the service was lacking but the food was so wonderful we can't complain too much! This restaurant is gorgeous with views of the waterfall from nearly every seat in the house. read more

Wow! Can't believe it took us so long to get to this place! We sat in the bridge section and had a nice view of the waterfall (even at night.) Everything was perfection. For starters we had pork belly and chicken/dumplings. For entrees we had duck and short rib. Our server was attentive but not overbearing. I can't say enough about this place! read more

I had made Dinner Reservations for our 27th wedding anniversary after reading all the positive reviews and Millwrights did NOT disappoint. I had made reservations for the bridge area based on online recommendations for a private/quite dinner experience and that advise was spot on. Food - I would rate this a 4.5/5. Out appetizers and mains were excellent (pork belly and the smoked chicken dumpling soup for appetizers, Steak/Salmon for the mains) and the cocktails were excellent. The dessert was the only part of the dinner that I would say was average. Service - again 4.5/5. Our waiter Joe was polite and professional and very helpful answering questions and making recommendations. Service was timely and we never felt rushed (the hand written anniversary card was a very nice touch!) We drove a bit to get to Millwrights but it was definitely worth it. I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for an excellent dining out experience for special occasions. read more

Well this executive chef gets it right every time. Their menu is so diverse for a variety of eaters. They source their ingredients locally and often have some very creative vegetarian items on the menu. From burgers to prime rib they have it. The setting is absolutely splendid right by the waterfall. Lots of history in the building. They also make the best cocktails, quite creative. We started with a Caesar salad with roasted chickpeas, which was so inviting and delicious I had the hearts of palm ceviche that was quite tasty with sweet potato chip. My partner had an incredible steak and we had some of the best broccoli Rabi served in a restaurant. read more
