We have been here a few times. Great atmosphere and good food. They have a bar area you can eat in.

Two North House Cheeseburgers: 8 oz Certified Angus Beef | Bibb Lettuce Tomato | Vermont Cheddar | Black Garlic Aioli Crispy Shallot. One was medium and one medium rare; both perfectly grilled. Added the Parmesan Truffle Fries and the Grilled Asparagus. Service was excellent and water refilled as needed. Excellent place for lunch in a very interesting quiet tavern-like atmosphere. We had attended several corporate events at this restaurant in the past and always came away with a very positive impression. This was our first private visit as a family, celebrating our daughter's graduation, and unfortunately it was an extremely disappointing experience. The atmosphere was pleasant and the food itself was good, but the service was unacceptable and, at times, offensive. We mentioned the graduation in our reservation, yet nobody at the restaurant acknowledged the occasion in any way. We were given two bread rolls upon being seated, and then waited approximately 30 minutes for our appetizers. After that, we waited another full hour for our main courses. What made the situation particularly frustrating was the complete lack of communication. No one came to update us about the delay or offer additional bread. We had to ask for water ourselves. Our daughter did not order an appetizer and spent the entire time waiting hungry. When the food finally arrived, nobody apologized for the excessive delay. The most troubling part of the evening occurred when I noticed that my rice seemed cold. I politely asked whether it was intended to be served that way or whether it had become cold during the unusually long wait. The waitress took my plate away, even though I had already started eating. Five minutes later, she returned with what appeared to be the exact same plate, including the same partially eaten rice, and informed me that the chef said it was served that way by design. This raised an obvious question: what happened to my food during those five minutes? Was it examined? Was it tasted? Bringing back a plate containing partially eaten food is simply unacceptable and unsanitary. If the waitress needed to consult the chef, she could have returned with the answer without removing the plate, or the chef could have come to our table to explain the dish. What should have been a special family celebration became a deeply disappointing experience. Given our previous positive experiences with this restaurant, the contrast was particularly striking. read more

Updating my review to add the remaining missing star. I just enjoyed my nephew's engagement party at the North House, held in the back old horse stable room (my favorite), and it couldn't have been more magical and understatedly elegant. The way they decorated for the holiday season was perfect. The passed hors d'oeuvres were delicious (especially the stuffed mushrooms and large bacon wrapped sea scallops! And on the buffet the pasta dish was good.. the mini potato knishes were my favorite). The service was friendly and attentive. Well done North House! read more

Then a filet with garlic mashed potatoes and I swapped out rabe for asparagus and added a side of honey carrots. We also got the short ribs it was huge very tender carrots with mashed potatoes. I went for lunch on a weekday with a friend and her high school aged daughter. Amongst us we had the shrimp basket, fish & chips, and a salad with grilled chicken. Everyone was happy with our meals and we all needed a box for leftovers. I had not not been in that building for almost 20 years--but it still has areas with historic charm (don't miss a trip to the restroom so you can see parts of the original 18th century house). There are several small dining rooms with different vibes--a bar, booths, a private room for about 10, another for more--20+. The hostess who greeted and seated us and our waitperson were both helpful and welcoming. read more

The North House is a quaint and cozy establishment. Despite being short-staffed on Sunday, 3/2, the service was impeccable. Brendan and Matt made our inaugural visit outstanding. There was a full bar and fifteen tables to service. They went to every table and made several rounds to ensure that customers were attended to. We had an amazing first experience food wise. Calamari served with hot peppers and oh so fresh. There are no words to describe the short rib served over mashed potatoes and served with crispy onion rings and carrots. There was no need for a knife as the meat was so tender. Service was great. Ambiance leaves a lot to be desired as we were seated in the tavern which had 2 tv screens and was brightly lit. Next time I will be sure to ask to be seated in the room that is pictured on Yelp which is more intimate and dimly lit. read more

What a beautiful venue. I had been here many times when it was the Avon Old Farms Restaurant and was pleasantly surprised how much more I like The North House. The bar and happy hour is great and very busy so come early. We ended up being seated in the main room which used to be very stuffy and boring looking. Not anymore. The room has been restored to its original glory so its original hardwood plank floors, beamed ceiling, and candles galore. It was so romantic and cozy. There was a jazz band playing too. My margarita was good, his dirty martini was just OK. The Brussels sprouts were great, same with the whipped ricotta, and big portions! He had the beef Wellington which was perfectly cooked. The North House offers a great happy hour! Tuesday through Sundays 3-6pm, they have a great menu of bar bites and drinks! I stopped in with a group of 4 on a Wednesday around 5pm and was able to easily get a table in the bar area. By the time we left it was pretty busy so I would advise to go early if you want to take advantage of happy hour. We tried a variety of bar bites but the best were the pork belly tacos and coconut shrimp! Portions were a bit small for the prices. The drinks were delicious. The Yelp check in offer was a free dessert which was much appreciated. We had the s'mores crème brûlée and cheesecake which were just okay. It seemed only 1 bartender/waitress was managing the whole bar area so service was a bit slow to order more as it got busier but they came by often with water refills and to clear our plates. Loved our experience here. Sat at the bar for a drink and so pretty. Busy bar! Had an awesome dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. Made a reservation for the blacksmith room and they said it's not guaranteed but will do their best to seat us in there. They ended up seating us in there, which was a treat since I love anything historic. Food was very slow but since we were with another couple and were talking a lot, it was nice to take our time. Boyfriend's sister in law got the crab cakes. So good. I had a bite. I got the scallops and my boyfriend got the salmon. Both were great. My scallops were seared on both sides so they had a nice crunch to them which I love and that was over risotto. Boyfriends brother got crème brûlée and we all had some. So delicious. Wife and I were out and about taking a drive and it was close to dinner time and looked for a place to eat on yelp and this place popped up .so called and off we went! The restaurant has a few different rooms we sat in a larger room that had a bunch of candles lit it was quite pretty to be honest so nice surprise for us . My wife had the scallops over a risotto that was very delicious and plated beautifully I myself had the half chicken with garlic mashed potatoes which was delicious with great flavors I wish I could remember the waitresses name but she was great! We did the 7 course chefs dinner for two of us in our first night out and it was an absolutely excellent meal. The assistant manager came out to describe each dish and everything was brought out promptly after being cooked. The waitress brought over a new set of utensils for each course as well. 1st course was salmon tartar in Napa cabbage 2nd course was stuffed acorn squash with a panko topping 3rd course was buckwheat fettuccine 4th course was grilled swordfish with escarole and fennel 5th course was duck breast with celery root purée 6th course was rib eye with a Brussels salad and red potatoes 7th course was cheese cake with some toffee caramel mousse Each dish was so flavorful and carefully curated to think about taste and texture. We had a great booth in the back of the restaurant with only 6 other tables so it wasn't loud at all and we were able to have a comfortable conversation. The menu looked amazing and we had a hard time, deciding what to get, but all three of us ended up getting this sandwich. The meat is tender, the chimichurri is plentiful, and the sweet potato fries were excellent. I would definitely order this again. The service was great. Our server didn't come by as often as we would've liked, but we did appreciate being left to enjoy a relaxing lunch in each other's company. We had to wait a while to place our dessert order and had to track down the server so we could pay the check at the end. Dessert options were OK. The crème brûlée was not what we thought it would be and had a very thin top. The ice cream was as expected. Unfortunately, the menu was misleading about the cookies and cream flourless cake. Every menu seems to have a flourless chocolate cake these days and it's so boring; why do all restaurants suddenly hate flour? Because I thought this was going to be a cookies and cream cake, I decided to take a chance on it because it was something different. Imagine my extreme disappointment to find the only cookies and cream aspect was the moose on top of a frozen, dense, unpleasant, and overall not enjoyable, flourless chocolate cake. The best part of that dessert was the Oreo on top. I wouldn't order this dessert again and I recommend they change their menu so it accurately reflects that a customer is going to be getting a block of frozen chocolate masquerading as cake. Truly a lovely experience. We had a bit of a wait to be seated even with a reservation, but it was the holiday season so that most likely played into it. The restaurant is so unique and interesting and there was a waiting area so our party could sit and chat before starting our meal. Once seated, the service was impeccable and we were all blown away by the food. For appetizers we had the clam chowder, buffalo wings, and calamari, all were lovely but I'd highly recommend the wings! For entree the short rib was to die for, I will surely be dreaming of it. And the desserts, oh my goodness, the options were amazing and the actual desserts were even better than they sounded on the menu. The flourless chocolate cake was a decadent flavor bomb, we all could not stop eating it. Our group will definitely be back and will recommend it to people we know in the area. I am struggling to describe my experience at The North House. When I made the reservation online for dinner I mentioned that I am celebrating a birthday. Based on how friendly (being sarcastic) our waiter was, I did not expect him to bring a dessert with a candle or even acknowledge we are celebrating anything. But, I did not know how to react when he dropped a plate with a candle in the middle of the table after we finished dinner. He said "I hear we are celebrating a birthday", dropped the plate with a candle and walked away. We did not know how to react and the people sitting at the table next to us also watched him drop the plate. We felt humiliated and he definitely killed the whole vibe of the night. The drinks were good, the food was just ok (the fish of the day hardly had any flavor), the vegetarian risotto was fine. But the service was extremely poor, including the hostess who just didn't care as we walked in and was busy on her phone. My rating is based on how the staff behaved. This was my husband and I's first time here. I passed by it and thought it looked very cute and I have to say expectations were surpassed. Amazing food and drinks, the service was BEYOND great. Food of the bat- my entree was the Braised Short Rib of Beef- Six Hour Braised Short Rib, Sautéed Spaetzle, Caramelized Cipollini Onions, Sweet Peas and Jus Reduction. It was phenomenal. They were out of the Beef Wellington- so I need to come back and try that for sure! My drink favs- Cherry Blossom Sour and No Figs Given! I need the No Figs again right now! :) The rustic vibes are amazing at The North House. We sat in the far back room that looked like an old stable and it was just perfectly New England. Matt, our server, was fantastic. With visits from the Chef and the manager, we learned about all the history of the building. Is it a little haunted...hmmmm....maybeeee? I think it all adds to the charm of it. We also tried three desserts. Strawberry Cheesecake, Vanilla Creme Brulee and a Chocolate Cake. My fav- the Creme Brulee toed with the cheesecake! **The North House Happy Hour Review** I recently visited The North House for happy hour and was somewhat disappointed with the appetizers. The salmon tartare was served with just a tiny fraction--about 1/8 teaspoon--of salmon alongside two tortilla chips, and it was priced at $12. The duck confit and grilled serloin each cost $10, but both were served in very small portions--not even bite sized Additionally, all appetizers were plated on large white plates, which made the small portions feel even more minuscule. The drinks were just okay, not particularly memorable. On the plus side, our server was great--friendly and attentive. My friend and I stopped by The North House on a week night to try some of their new happy hour offerings! They have a new chef, and although this was my first visit and it's hard to compare between the chefs, it seems that this one is trying to come up with some creative menu items. I see they offer brunch, even on the weekdays, and a prix fixe menu on Tuesdays with family style dinners to come soon on Mondays. I think it's great that they're switching things up! Their website still lists the happy hour as being 3-6 with a variety of small plates but it's 4-6 instead, and the prices online aren't reflective of what they have in person. I can't remember exactly what was featured, but I believe it was a handful of $8 cocktails with some slightly discounted apps. I ordered the pretzel bites the first time and was underwhelmed for the price. Ricotta was good, fries were good, drinks are good - but unfortunately none of the above are as good as max a Mia, da capo, or other restaurants in the valley. Service felt INSANELY rushed even though I made it clear that I was just there to hang out at the bar. Largest selection of liquor I've seen in Ct. The space is very versatile, We've had elegant dinners in the forge room and it's comfortable enough that I'm currently just doing work on my laptop at the bar. Positively the best dining experience out I have had in a very long time. Unique and charming old tavern atmosphere. Amazingly attentive waitstaff. The menu I would call "curated". I am not foodie thinking I am a food critic. I am a paying customer that just wants good food, good service for a fair price. It was 10/13/24 at 5pm when I had arrived at The North House. I just arrived from out of town. I walked in and there was one table in the dining room, which seemed really nicely decorated and very clean. There were four couples in the bar area. The hostess seemed friendly enough. She asked if the bar was okay, which it was. I sat down and she walked away. I hadn't received a menu, not a huge deal for me. However, you are claiming "Casual Fine Dining". The gentleman that waited on me was super friendly and helpful. I ordered a cocktail, (Caramel Apple Mule) which was well crafted. It seemed only two bartenders/servers were on the entire floor. I ordered the following, Filet of Beef Tartare shallot, marinated mushroom, pickled mustard seed, fried caper, dijonaise, cured egg yolk, toast points | $18 Butternut squash risotto asparagus, tomato, mushroom , calabrian chili crumb | $24 Apple Crisp $12 Cinnamon & Nutmeg Baked Granny Smith Apple, Streusel Crumb Topping, House-Made Sea Salt Caramel Swirl Ice Cream So, I will be honest, and I did eat all of the Tartare and Risotto, I was hungry. We will start with the Tartare. It was missing the cured egg yolk all together. The three small toast points I did get were burnt. To be honest I don't remember the marinated mushrooms being on there, but they could have been. If anyone has ever had Beef Tartare knows that it has a few other things in it to make it flavorful. It wasn't seasoned with any salt; the capers weren't in the beef. There was no parsley, Worcestershire sauce, there was nothing in the beef except the Dijonnaise on the plate, a few mustard seeds and some capers on top. It was bad!!! Like I said I ate it because I was hungry. Meanwhile the GM or floor manager spent most of the time talking to what seemed like regulars. I now know he is on vacation in Florida this week visiting and how great the new dessert menu is. The squash risotto for me was more a personal preference for me. I love the fall and the flavors that come with it. So, for me I feel the risotto had a seasonal identity crisis. You have squash for the fall, asparagus for the spring and tomato for summer. I didn't taste any of the Calabrian chili, there wasn't much flavor of squash either. At this point I asked the servers opinion on a craft beer. I decided on one, but he knew I was on the fence about the other, so he brought a sample of the other. This was great! The bar had a few more tables show, but not busy by no means. There was one food runner as well. On to the worst of all. The Apple crisp that was so highly talked about by the GM. I attached a picture as well. There was barely a quarter of an apple in the dish. There was not much " Streusel crumb Topping". The apples weren't even cooked, the sauce was runny and way too much nutmeg. They finished the ice cream with Maldon or Fluer del sel salt and it ended up being way overpowering. All you could taste was salt. This one I only took three small bites and pushed it away. The GM did come over and ask is there something wrong with the dessert and asked if I could comment on it so he could tell the chef. I said too much Nutmeg and ice cream was too salty. I was too annoyed at this point to give good feedback. The GM did take the Apple Crisp off the bill. The bill was $60 ish. A little high for the quality of food I got. I left at 6:21pm. The summary is it's not the cook's fault for cooking and plating what they did. It's not the server's fault for bringing the food out looking and tasting like it did. This is what most people think. The problem stems from the GM and the Executive Chef. They know and hold the standards of the restaurant. Apparently, these are their standards. I give credit to my server who did do a good job! It's sad, because this place has so much potential. I will not be returning. read more

I am very picky with chicken and cannot stand dry chicken, but this was impeccably cooked and I ate the whole meal within five minutes.
