My friends & I have been there multiple times & up until this visit I would have written a raving review. But: The food was just mediocre, nothing like I've had previously. Nothing special. There are numerous other restaurants in town where the food is exceptional. So you'll go now mainly for the view. And, our server would not split the check, which other servers have done in the past. "it's their policy " & proceeded to inform us it was on the menu. In no way do we hold this against our server but Tate's, get with the program. They have great food at this place. If your needing gluten free options they have plenty. The atmosphere is really the best part. Feels like your at a yacht club, they had a live band playing some great hits. You can't go wrong at this place. Seriously we walk in and whoever was at the door said yeah outside is first come first serve so obviously we misunderstood not knowing we have to go on a list so we sat down for a good 10 minutes now our name is not on the list, they came over and told us we had to move and go on the list and they should've bumped us up at one as 7 ahead of us It was a misunderstanding because we sat down and now we're at the bar!! I don't feel bad saying your service could be better because I've read a lot of reviews about that and last night. A few of your servers could've done a lot better. I don't need to be treated rude to my friends who are not even from around here. Don't even wanna go back we kept us here was your food is good and the band don't tell Lisa is the reason we came. You know what you need friendly servers some seem annoyed when we call for help to get a drink etc.... Why should we flag people down when we're sitting there? Shouldn't they come over and say do you want another drink or are you ready to order? I think 20 minutes is ridiculous to wait to order food once we have a drink!! We are waiting for another friend to come and she didn't want anything to eat because she was just coming by to say hi and listen to the band she already ate and she was late. It was close to 9 o'clock when she got there. So the food was delicious that's why I gave it two stars but if I had to, I would give the Service one when you have a big patio like that you should have a better organized. We go out all the time you should have a couple of those front tables move back more so people can dance you know you're gonna have a big crowd with that band. We decided to sit outside at Tate's and enjoy the beautiful sunny, breezy day. The outdoor seating made for a relaxing atmosphere, and it was a nice place to spend time with my boys. My youngest ordered the kids' cheeseburger with fries and enjoyed his meal. My oldest chose the Mokey Smash Burger, but unfortunately, he wasn't impressed. He said the burger was dry, the cheese didn't add much flavor, and overall it tasted bland. He loved the fries, thought they were crispy, well-seasoned, and easily the best part of his meal. He didn't even finish the burger or want to take it home, which says a lot. I ordered the Connecticut Lobster Roll with coleslaw and seasoned fries. The coleslaw was honestly one of the best I've had; fresh, creamy, and full of flavor. The fries were also excellent: crispy, well-seasoned, and delicious. As for the lobster roll, I've definitely had better here in Connecticut. The lobster was cooked well, and some bites tasted very fresh, but overall it lacked flavor. Even after adding the lemon and melted butter that came with it, it still didn't stand out. The service was also disappointing. Our waiter was not very attentive, and I found myself looking around to see if someone else could help us. I asked the person who brought our food for a cup of ice, for the glass jar of water that was at the table. Once again, I had to wait until our waiter to came back around just to get a straw. It made the dining experience feel a little frustrating because we had to keep waiting for simple requests. One small downside was the orange juice. My boys felt their cups had too much ice, leaving very little actual juice. After lunch, we decided to try the ice cream. Tate's has an ice cream and coffee window on the side of the restaurant, and our waiter did give us a 10% off card to use there. They offer a nice selection of flavors, one to three scoops, and plenty of toppings. I ordered the chocolate ice cream, while my boys chose Cookie Batter and Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Swirl. The ice cream was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. It ended our visit on a high note. Overall, Tate's has a beautiful outdoor atmosphere, great fries, amazing coleslaw, and delicious ice cream. However, the burgers, lobster roll, and lack of attentive service were disappointing. I would come back for the ice cream and outdoor setting, but I would have higher expectations for the main dishes and service next time. read more

Tates is a great indoor/ outdoor dining restaurant right on the water. This place is a summer vibe! You walk into a beautiful place and then walk out to a beautiful view! Obviously you have to come on a nice sunny day and enjoy the colorful outside dining area. You get to watch the boats and jet skis cruise the river while enjoying your lunch, dinner, cocktail or dessert. The margaritas are so good and come in a variety of flavors. You have so many seafood options that are perfect for a summer palate. I love coming here to relax, have a nice drink, some good food and have a waterfront experience without driving all the way down by the shoreline. read more

Everyone in Middletown knows about the history of flooding at the previous establishments. All of the locals couldn't wait for this location to reopen. After what seemed like forever...this issue was tackled and the restaurant was opened. I hope that what they have done continues to work. I have eaten here 5 or 6 times and attended Happy Hour a few times. The happy hour is decent. There is a special menu and drinks, but unfortunately, you need to be seated at the bar, not at the table next to it, not standing at the bar but seated at the bar. The staff is amazing, attentive and friendly. Also, it's happened a few times now where the hostess has given me a parking pass to go back to put into my car. Just a warning in case it's the day you visit. There are plenty of tables inside and outside seating has never been a problem unless you're trying to sit at the bar. The food has always been good with no reasons to complain. The portions are large and the adult drinks are never watered down. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you like to have a water view with your meal. read more

Love this place but I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with my 40 something dollar lobster roll.. I didn't have the most attentive waiter either. I had to flag him down to order a drink, then flag him down to order. My friend was really late, but we had to flag him down again to get her order too... it was busy, but still... I did however go to the fireworks on the river for the Fourth of July and that was well worth the price! We got drinks only, but it wasn't super crowded, we had access to clean bathrooms instead of port-a-potties that they have for the general public. We were promptly seated by a very nice hostess who just finished at Ohio state and had a nice way about her. Our server was Ashley and I have to say she was great. The kind of server who takes great care of you and anticipates your needs and delivers what you want before you have to ask. So the food... I have never gotten in a fight over an appetizer but I came close that day. My wife and I fought for the last of the amazing bite of the ahi Tuna nachos... I mean really wow. I've come back here many times and really enjoy it every time. I most recently came here twice in less than a month. Both times I got the Vodka Sauce Cutlet sandwich with caesar salad and its amazing. Their CT lobster role is really great as well. The drink I got was the Spice in Paradise (or Spice is Nice, something like that) with pineapple and tequila. Very delicious! Their outdoor patio is really nice too be whats cool is even sitting by the bar inside there is a huge window overlooking the water which is gorgeous. I did have a hard time using gps to get to the restaurant but once I got there I was glad to see that there was plenty of parking on a private lot. It was a bit too cold to dine outside but there looks to be plenty of outside dining with river views. They did have some heated igloo dining available but we dined indoor. Meet friends for Sunday brunch and had a great time. Service was great and our server was nice. Great portion sizes enough to have left overs. Tate's has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants in town, especially for brunch!! They now have heated Igloos on the patio so that you can continue to enjoy al fresco dining and the view of the Connecticut River even in the winter. We recently went to celebrate my daughter's birthday and she and I had a wonderful time!! There is a heater and blankets as well as a Bluetooth speaker so that you can connect and listen to your own musical playlist. As always, the food was delicious and the mimosas were awesome!! Our waiter was very attentive and when there was a discrepancy in the time limit on their website for the igloo and what we were told, he quickly took care of it and made sure we had the igloo for the full time. There is a $30 fee to reserve the igloo on top of your bill but it was worth the experience. Tate's is definitely a huge improvement from the previous establishment and a great addition to the Middletown food scene! read more

Incredibly festive spot for lunch, brunch or dinner around the holidays. It's right on the water, so you also get a beautifully wintery view. We came in on a Monday afternoon so it was pretty quiet. Our server was very attentive and sweet, and the food came out fast. The clam chowder was recommended, and it was quite good. I also got a tuna melt on gluten-free bread, and it was pretty decent. We set outback on the outdoor patio. There was a live band. The sun in the evening is blocked by the building. So I wore a sweatshirt as there was a breeze coming off the water. I got an espresso martini and my fiancé got a margarita. Both were good, but apparently they do not serve liquor on the patio in glass, which felt a little cheap for the $14 cocktails. There was a glass bottle of water for the table. And they used glass drink were for the water contradiction that rule. The cop salad was amazing. Party of four . We had reservations for an early lunch. We ordered and requested an order of fried calamari while we waited for our main dishes. Well, we got the calamari in a few munites, plus iced tea. But no lunch. We waited over an hour and finally got up to see why we had not been served. Our waiter said it would be right out, but after a couple of munites it was obvious they had forgotten us and it wasnt going to be "two Minutes". I saw videos about this place and was excited to check it out for the waterfront view. Unfortunately, we weren't able to sit outside since there was a wait, so we sat inside instead (no wait). The restaurant itself is decorated very nicely and has a clean, welcoming atmosphere, but it seems like most people go mainly for the outdoor view; which we didn't get to experience. The menu is pretty limited and nothing really stood out to me. I ended up ordering the salmon bowl, which was actually pretty good, though the rice tasted more like boxed Goya rice than homemade. My drink was solid and our server was friendly, the restaurant started filling up around 4:30-5:00. Overall, the presentation of the restaurant is nice, the food I had was decent, and service was good. The service and ambiance truly stole the show here. The entrance is beautifully designed and tucked behind a sliding bookshelf, which makes it feel like a hidden gem. Inside, the tables are simply yet tastefully decorated with candles throughout, creating a cozy atmosphere. Even the bathrooms were thoughtfully decorated and adorable and no detail was overlooked. They offer a great variety of seating options, including bar seating, high top tables, standard height tables, and window seating, so you can really choose the vibe you are going for. During the winter, they even have lit igloos outside so you can stay warm while sitting by the river, which is such a unique touch. My waitress was also tending bar, yet she remained prompt and attentive the entire time. She gave me space to look over the menu without making me feel rushed, but never disappeared long enough for me to wonder where she was. Even as it got busy, she handled everything seamlessly. The service was excellent. However, I honestly wish I could say the food lived up to the atmosphere, because the ambiance definitely sets high expectations. I ordered the short rib risotto and would probably give it a 6 out of 10. The risotto itself was fine but could have used more flavor, maybe something earthy like mushrooms to bring it together. The short rib was cooked well, but it lacked the depth of flavor I was hoping for. Overall, the dish did not quite come together as a cohesive plate. It was not bad by any means, it just felt like it was missing something. I also ordered the Italian Gabagool Sub with salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, roasted garlic, olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. It had all the right components and sounded amazing on paper, but it ended up tasting fairly bland. Typically an Italian sub has bold dressings and seasoning that really make it pop, and this one just did not quite hit that mark. I finally got the chance to check out Tate's in Middletown CT! I have wanting to go for a while so I am super excited to right this review ! The location is amazing the have a beautiful view of the Connecticut river which you can see from their outdoor patio and inside as well. They also have a great walking area by the water for nice walk before or after your meal ! ( note the outdoor patio is not dog friendly and the restaurant is very busy especially during peak hours .. and they do not currently take reservations ). For a Saturday around 6 we waited about 20-30 min for indoor seating ( about an hour for outdoor seating ) but we were able to sit at the bar until our table was ready , so the wait wasn't bad ! I started with the strawberry daqu-Rita which was very good ! The aperol spritz was amazing highly recommend ! For appetizers we order the peach whipped feta dip which was fabulous ! It came with fresh bread and veggies ( which I loved ) perfect for sharing and was a fan favourite at our table ! I knew it was good because I don't normally like feta .. but I loved this dip ! Next we ordered The buffalo cauliflower which was amazing ( I again normally don't like buffalo because it's too spicy for me ) but this sauce was really good you got the flavour of buffalo without the overwhelming spice ! Highly recommend ( also came with some veggies) For my entree I ordered the Waldorf salad sandwich which was really good too ! It also came with a pickle and a side of fries! The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside which I loved ! Overall 10/10 atmosphere was fabulous perfect for summer with view of the water ! Stopped by Tate's on a Monday to catch happy hour. We really wanted to enjoy the beautiful weather, so we chose to sit outside and skip the specials. The food was excellent. We shared a few appetizers and fish tacos, and everything was flavorful and well done. Just the right amount for two! The plantains were a standout: crispy, sweet, and there were plenty. I even had enough to take home and enjoy later as a midnight snack. The crab cakes were tasty, though smaller than expected (three cakes) but still enjoyable. The fish tacos were fantastic. The fish was super crispy and a nice surprise. Everything was seasoned really well, and the fries were hot and crisp, not an afterthought at all. I had two different beers. Some of the taps were unavailable (it was a Monday after a holiday) but the selection was still solid. My friend had a spicy pineapple cocktail that she loved so much she ordered a second. Sweet, refreshing, and strong enough to keep things interesting. The music they played was great, (2000s mix?) and the vibe outside was relaxed and welcoming. Our server was genuinely awesome with a great energy. One of the coolest parts is the boat dock and we saw a few people actually pulled up by water to grab dinner. Tate's is located right in Harbor Park, so after you eat, you can take a peaceful walk along the river. The whole setup makes it a perfect date night spot or a nice place to unwind with friends. I'm already planning my next visit. I want to try the tuna nachos next, and honestly, based on how good everything was, I'd be happy to work my way through the entire menu. read more

When I brought it up, the staff just brushed it off with a casual, "Oh well, we can get you another window seat"--acting like our confirmed arrangements meant nothing at all. ​While we made the best of our afternoon, having a restaurant completely ignore a carefully planned reservation ruins the vibe right from the start. ​Save yourself the trouble of planning ahead--just show up whenever you want, because advance reservations clearly mean nothing here anyway. read more

Went on a Friday in September around 5 and it wasn't too busy yet. I would say it got busy between 6 and 630. I can't remember our bartenders name but she was great. The Paradise with Spice drink (their version of a spicy marg) was really good, I believe it was $14 so I only got one of those. Happy hour is weekdays at the bar only from 3-6. I wish the happy hour menu had more options. For oyster lovers they have $1 oysters. For food, we ordered the tuna nachos, birria tacos and fish tacos, everything was great. View is awesome too even from the bartop as there are huge windows looking outside. The only downside is that it is a little expensive (which is why I was hoping for a bigger happy hour menu) but I think that's just standard now unfortunately because food prices aren't cheap. Feedback: cocktail menu (not pictured) doesn't have the beer sizes listed so you don't know if it's a pint or 12 ounces, etc. I wish menus were updated online, I couldn't find any happy hour menu information (I saw an older social media reel but the video was too fast to pause and read the menu) and the cocktail menu that I found online was not current. I wish there was an indoor/outdoor bar so you could have the quick bar service or happy hour deals but enjoy sitting outside at the same time. I've been dying to come here and it didn't disappoint. We went for dinner on a Saturday night and waiting only 10 minutes for a seat outside for five people. Our waitress was very nice, she kept coming back and asking how we were. The food was amazing!!!! I got the chicken Caesar sandwich that was great, but I had to try the lemon ricotta rigatoni which I thought was the best dish at the table. My friends and I decided to stop by and have a quick bite. We were promptly seated and our waiter came over right away. We ordered a bunch of apps and entrees and everything tastes great. I got the birria tacos and they were so, so delicious which a nice kick. The only issue was the service was a tad slow. Half of us never got our drinks and had to remind the waiter and it took a long time to get the desserts. It was busy, yes, but it did look like the other tables were being served quickly. My mind was blown by the igloos and how lovely they are, blankets, tables, throws,chairs, sofas, decor! Food! I was recently here for a breakup dinner, or lunch lol, he picked the spot and it as my first time seeing this place. and I'll admit I felt I was too loud (I'm pretty sure I was) for this restaurant and I'm sure I was like that for the first hour, this place was really great and they gave me and my ex the space to talk. I'm extremely sorry if we made any of your staff and your other customers uncomfortable, and I also sorry and annoyed that he didn't tip our waitress with how amazing she was with us, he should've known better considering one of his sisters is one. A special shoutout to Ashley R as she was great despite the awkwardness we put everyone in. I'm sorry I couldn't tip more. Hello, I attended a baby shower at Tates in Middletown this past Sunday and wanted to share what an incredible job Kaylee did throughout the event. She was attentive from start to finish, consistently checking in around the room to make sure everything was taken care of and that guests had what they needed. One thing that especially stood out was her ability to read the room. When the mom-to-be began thanking guests, Kaylee thoughtfully lowered the music volume without being asked, allowing everyone to hear and enjoy the moment. She was professional, kind, and clearly took pride in providing excellent service. Her attention to detail helped make the event run smoothly and created a wonderful experience for everyone attending. Tate's is the latest incarnation of the incredible flooding restaurant on the banks of the CT river in Middletown. This time around it's been lovingly restored to a pleasant and bright interior. Dining al fresco on the deck is the main attraction. I was there with a friend on a Monday in mid-September and the glorious weather, dramatic clouds and lovely views did not disappoint. Service was good and food and drink were above average. I had the meatball sliders and my companion chose a burger. We were pleased if not ecstatic. The desserts are homemade on premises per our server and the lemon cheesecake with a meringue layer was scrumptious. I wish them well. The location is all but the challenges are many. read more

Took my neighbor to Tate's for her Birthday Lunch [97]. Got a table on the deck under an umbrella and got ready to enjoy a good meal. We both like Lobster Rolls and this was close enough for us with a short drive. She insists on the cold lobster roll and me the hot one. We were both pleased with the service, ambience and food. I think she got more lobster than me but she was probably bragging They both were delicious and filled with great lobster. We also both got the fries; she the regular and me the Piri Piri style.
