Steamed was a pleasant surprise and an excellent find. Didn't really expect a lot of authentic Chinese in Middletown CT but this was authentic down to the homemade chilli sauce. Their speciality is dumplings and they have quite the selection. We had the soup dumplings and the shrimp dumplings. Both hand made and the portions were extremely generous. We also ordered the spicy beef noodle soup which was out of this world! Melting beef tendons which chewy wheat noodles in an amazingly tasty broth. Service is prompt and efficient and don't forget to try some of their signature Jasmine teas. The restaurant is clean and simply decorated just off the Main Street. We got the sampler platter, the big pork bun, and strawberry black tea with strawberry popping Boba. The sampler platter was mediocre. We both wished most of the dumplings came with more spice in general, but also more spice variety. They were pretty boring. And the soy sauce mix wasn't super tasty either; if it was, it could have enhanced them better. My favorite was probably the pumpkin shrimp one. The big pork bun i thought was pretty tasty, but my partner didn't love it. It also had so much dough which is what really made it "big". You can get tasty dim sum right in Middletown. I always seek out dim sum places when we travel. Boston, NYC, San Fran, DC. Tried places in each of those cities. Steamed brings a delicious dim sum option right to central CT. It doesn't have the selection or atmosphere of the big city dim sum palaces, but the big pork buns at Steamed will stand up to any I've tried. We ordered the spicy beef noodle soup, a dim sum sampler and 2 big pork buns. Toni got a boba tea. The soup was very tasty. Huge serving, lots of meat bits and noodles. The only downside the meat was a little grisly. Great flavor- not so great texture. Each of the 9 dim sum dumplings was well cooked and tasty. The dipping sauces available added soy, vinegar or spicy. The pork buns were fluffy, and huge with a good sized portion of pork filling. It seemed reasonable at $60 for all that food. We brought home leftovers. The place is not huge but it was clean and the staff was very friendly. Order at the counter and they bring your food out to you. We will definitely be back. I consider dumplings a food group - especially during the fall season. Something about eating a beautifully wrapped warm morsel of goodness is the most comforting to me...which makes sense that I needed to try Steamed out! After a busy day of apple picking, my partner and I decided to try out Steamed. We ordered the pork soup dumpling. These were so good. The wrapper was not overly thick and it was FULL of delicious fatty soup. We also ordered the dumpling sampler which provided 2 of every dumpling on their menu. We really enjoyed the pumpkin dumpling and the hargow! The winner for me was definitely the Chengdu dumplings. They were umami with a bit of a kick. I 100% recommend ordering this if you get a chance to visit! Service was wonderful. You order at the window and the team will bring your food to the table you choose! At the end, you just leave everything and go. Super easy. Super quick. My only comment would be that I wish the table tops were not as sticky. They definitely clean the tables - but I found the tables overly sticky and unpleasant to touch. I also deterred from sitting in specific seats as they would have sauce drippings on it. I really want to like this place just a little more than I actually did but I'll give them the 4-Star review, 3.5 in my mind though. I've had plenty if dim sum in New York, Boston, near the casinos and even a decade and a half ago in West Hartford if anyone remembers that place. I respect the effort and the convience of having dim sum or any dumplings close to my area but this did not impress me at all. Prices were a little high in my opinion, didn't help the dumplings were only OK to me but were still really good to others! The pork wonton soup though, it was amazingly light and super hot. Loved that one. Service was confusing whether you get served or go up to the counter. But service was also very friendly. The flavors and textures in the dumplings were there but just barely. There is so much opportunity for a place like Steamed in this side of Connecticut! Since it's still in soft opening phase, hoping to see it grow and improve so I can give it another try! First off, the har gow (shrimp dumplings) were my highlight! Perfectly seasoned, juicy shrimp, and large savory filling. No changes there! If they can keep it up, there's a lot of growth they can do by adding Siu mai (Pork and shrimp dumpling), soup dumplings, and other steamed dumplings to the menu. Another star to the menu was the braised pork belly with preserved mustard bun. My dad mentioned this was one of his favorites and I can see why. There was a lot or flavor and seasoning on this dish. For everything else we ordered, it felt over priced for the smaller portions we were getting. When we got the cold noodles, my mother's immediate reaction was that it was a smaller portions than she was expecting for the price. For chengdu wontons, we later realized we were paying over $1 (almost $2) per wonton and couldn't help but compare it to other places with a better deal. As the menu continues to change and develop, hoping these notes on pricing point can be taken into consideration! Additionally, I would wonder how Steamed May take larger groups into future consideration. Our group was almost a party of 10, but we downsized are the last minute due to a cancellation of plans. We went in as a party of 5 and was curious on how we would've fit in the restaurant. Right now it seems to be set up more for takeout than for sit down. Given still the early stages of soft opening, we did notice the chairs were still getting set up and cooking ware getting prepped when we got there slightly after opening. Hoping these details get hashed out as well! There's definitely opportunity there since the decor is so nice and people like getting their steamed foods fresh! On a high note, the bubble tea and drink options were all very good. Trying a few of them when we were there, we were immediately addicted to the ones we ordered and even got one to go. The black sugar pearl milk tea is signature in every right. We got obsessed with the lychee green tea and immediately ordered more to go. We could taste the freshness and can see why many people got it to go while we were eating. Looking to see what direction Steamed goes as it develops and grows in the next few months. This review is solely off the bubble tea. After a stroll on the main St, we came to steamed which is down a side street off the main road. We got a matcha tea latte and the brown sugar latte both with pearls. It took a decent amt of time to make even though we were the only people in the restaurant. The drinks come in a tall container which is different. The matcha latte flavor was great! Good matcha flavor and not too sweet (I did ask for it half sweet). The brown sugar was just ok. We've had better tasting ones before. It didn't have as strong of a caramel flavor. Where the drinks went terribly wrong was the pearls. First of all, there were barely any in the drink and then half of them were well cooked and the other half were these mushy enlarged pearls that seemed that they were made the day before and left to soak or something. At $6 a drink, these were overpriced and the quality was bad. We won't be returning. read more

This is a very tiny place and the inside looks like it was put together from a shopping trip at TJ Maxx. Figured the place looked authentic and the dim sum was made steamed in crates like usual. Till the food was put down and noticed it was all made in the same shapes with no real effort put in. The food had no taste at all, unseasoned and definitely not worth the price. Honestly, even the soy sauce wasn't even salted like it was water-down. The staff didn't really care to acknowledge us and seemed like they preferred to go orders. Got a bubble tea since the images looked good. However, that didn't even have a tea taste to it but just like they dumped the entire sugar shaker into it and mixed with water. Decent spot to satisfying your dumpling cravings but wouldn't recommend for noodle soups. We ordered a wide selection of the dumplings - a unique one was the pumpkin and shrimp one which I actually really enjoyed. The chendu dumplings was the closest they had to wonton in chili sauce but it was a good second option! Although the sauce was not very spicy. The skins on all the dumplings were done very well and held well. The soup dumplings are usually what I judge for a dumpling house and these did not disappoint. Although the skin was slightly thicker than I would have liked, the skin to filling ratio and overall filling was quite yummy. They didn't supply the vinegar dipping sauce unless you ask for it and that's crucial to pairing with the soup dumplings! The beef noodle soup was disappointing. The type of noodle they used didn't soak up the flavor well so unless you spoon in soup right after, the flavor of the soup was lost in just the noodle. The flavor of the soup itself also wasn't what I had expected. So I would probably skip the noodles from this spot next time and just indulge on their dumplings. read more

Let me just preface this review by saying that I understand this Steamed location is still in its soft opening phase and there will no doubt be plenty of room for improvement. My hope is that some of this feedback can be incorporated into their final products. For starters, a lot of their dishes could use a lot more flavor, namely the chengdu wontons, the chilled cucumbers, and the dry noodles. Depth of flavor was noticeably missing from the aforementioned dishes with no clear overtones of what flavor profile they wanted to convey. This left them feeling bland overall. Portion sizes were small as well, especially considering how much they were charging. I will, however, give them props for their amazing har gow (shrimp dumplings) which were plump, juicy, and had the most delicate crystal wrapper. No change needed there! I would let Steamed figure out their dish composition first but would be down to come and check it out again in a few more months! read more

Going to Steamed was my first ever experience with dim sum / dumplings. I went with a few friends and we all ordered 2-3 different buns which was great because we all got to sample almost the whole menu. The soup buns were my favorite. I would come back just for those! The vegetarian ones are not my favorite and there were a few that were too dry. That might be just my preference. I will come back here if I'm ever in the mood for dim sum again. We ate at lunch at the Madison location and enjoyed it so much we came back here for lunch the very next day when we realized they had another location. The dumplings were still delicious and the sampler platter is great to share. The wonton soup is very unique with a strong seaweed presence and lighter broth than many typical American Chinese greasy food joints. But...unlike Madison, the service here was really disappointing. Despite being the only patrons in the place we could barely get the young woman off her cell phone to help identify which dumplings were which, get refills of our water, get plates to eat our dumpling on, or chili paste/condiments, etc. Maybe it was an off day. The menu is very limited, but if you want a dumpling fix, you could do a lot worse than this small local joint. read more

It's nice to see a dim sum place in Middletown. The folks running this place are friendly. Signature fruit tea was nice. Essentially it is passion fruit juice. Pork soup dumplings was good, and had some soup in it. Lack of chili oil in the table was bad. Crispy scallion pancake was scallion pancake fried a little bit more to the level of black and crispiness. Beef dumplings and chengdu wontons were good as well. Dim sum here should not be compared to the one in NYC. Especially I felt the folks here has less skill compared to the NYC chinese chef's. But this is a good addition to Middletown. read more

I lived in Middletown most of my life and have seen many places come and go. I'm pretty bummed I left because Steamed is here to stay. I went to Steamed this past weekend with my parents (who are luckily still Middletown locals and can enjoy this place regularly). Steamed is a casual place where you set yourself in a small quaint dining area. They have an assortment of bubble teas/other unique drinks. I had the white peach yogurt drink and I'm in love. My dad was in love with the ingenuity of the tea bottles (which include a cap if you take it to go). So there's truly something to love for everyone. We got a few orders of dumplings including pork soup, shrimp, beef, and shrimp pumpkin. There were no complaints about any of them. All of the options were delicious, warm, and fresh. My personal favorite was the pork soup because a good soup dumpling has been hard to find - especially in CT (and have been obsessed since trying Dumpling Man in NY 7 years ago) We also had the pork belly buns, which were amazing. But truthfully, what isn't amazing with pork belly on it. I hope Steamed sticks around Middletown, because nothing will make my visits home more home-y than a ton of dumpling. read more

Semi-open kitchen. The dining area is nice. Food came out steaming hot and delicious. I went with your standard steamed pork dumplings which were very filling and very fresh tasting. My girlfriend had the vegetable dumpling which was very filling as well. This is now our go-to quick service dumpling joint. Next on my list to try is the pork soup dumpling. We've been to the Madison location before and had the same general impression of this location. The restaurant is nice and clean and service was great. Food was awesome. Shout out to the soup dumplings and pork belly mustard buns. I knocked off a star for the pricing. Compared to most dim sum places the prices were a little steep. $10 for 6 dumplings is a lot, and there wasn't anything too remarkably special to warrant it. It's hard to come to a place like this and only be able to reasonably order 1 or 2 things. One of my favorite parts about dim sum (or is this more of a dim sum fusion?) is being able to get a lot of different little things. We would happily come back for the soup dumplings alone, but would probably pass on the rest. P. S. Connecticut's boba game is generally pretty weak. Their boba here was fresh and delicious. Let's start off by saying they did warn me it would take about 20min. It ended up taking 45. I guess I should have known better seeing as they were flustered enough to notify me of the wait. I kept my order short and simple. 4 pork buns so 2 orders and 2 brown sugar milk teas. But wait, they didn't have enough milk for the second tea. With such a limited menu and milk not being a difficult thing to come by during the pandemic, I don't understand it but I took my one I could get. Wasn't too thrilled about the fact they made it within 1min of my payment and I had to let it sit and wait for 40min to enjoy it with the food.... Flavorful dishes! I ordered take out via Ubereats and food arrived in a timely manner. Overall I think the prices were a little high, but the flavor is there! My boyfriend and I ordered a variety of items on the menu: black sugar pearl with fresh milk bubble tea, sticky rice and chicken wrapped in lotus leaf, dry noodles with soybean and pork paste, pork soup dumplings ( xao long bao ), braised beef noodles and soup and Chengdu wontons. Out of everything we ordered, I would probably only order the dry noodles with soybean & pork paste, and the cheng du wontons again.The wonton sauce was a little on the sweeter side, and it made a great add on for me to dip my sticy rice in! The other items were good and flavorful, but I honestly don't think it's worth it based on their high prices. My opinions are based on my experiences at other dimsum like restaurants in cities like Boston. Not sure if it was because it's a to-go order, but the portions didn't seem right to me. The sticky rice was made of mostly rice instead of filling and the braised beef noodles were also mostly noodles and a couple pieces of pork. However the soup broth was definitely rich and fulfilling! I have been to the Steamed in New Haven a myriad of times and figured that this one will be similar. I looked at photos of the menu and got excited for some items I frequently ordered at the New Haven location, cucumber salad and eggplant & garlic sauce appetizers. To my dismay, this location did not have either item and only had scallion pancakes as the only appetizer. The dumplings were good and I REALLY like their teas. Super sweet I chugged it down not realizing what I had done until it was too late and the caffeine rushed through my body. Overall, yummy dumplings and tea. Upset at their limited menu in comparison to their New Haven location. Also, they do not have actual servers like the one in New Haven, you order at the counter. Which I didn't mind about that, I just wish they had the cucumber salad and eggplant & garlic sauce appetizers. read more
