The tuna nachos were a work of art. Now the bad news. The beautiful tuna nachos were a greasy salt bomb. The tuna and avocado were micro diced, so small as to have no flavor and barely there. A complete ripoff. Running the length of the restaurant are two bare metal AC ducts that drip condensation on diners while eating. And the noise. Great view of the river! The ambience definitely deserves 5 stars but, unfortunately, the food did not deliver. The apps were delicious--I'd highly recommend the crab cakes and tuna nachos! Entrees, however, fell flat. I had the fried fish entree--it was fine but I expected a bit more for $28. My wife had the mahi which was dry and flavorless. The other entrees that our table ordered were similarly disappointing. Decent wine/cocktail list with some creative options and great summer sippers. We booked an igloo for $30 tonight for my birthday. The description for this stated it was for 2 hours, 4:30 to 6:30. The igloo was cozy and warm with a view of the CT river. The food was great and Alex our server was excellent. They even had someone come out to sing Happy Birthday to me. However, after that we were given our check and told we had to leave the igloo because they changed the booking time for the igloo to 1 hour and 45 mins instead of the 2 hours that was noted when I booked the igloo last week. What was an enjoyable experience up to that point quickly turned to a very disappointing end to our dinner. read more

So glad I get to be the first to review! Just went here last night and the food was incredible. My friends and I had the chicken sliders, clam chowder, strawberry salad and ribeye! Everything was cooked perfectly and the sauces, dressings, flavor on everything was spot on. The service was great as well thanks to Cole! So happy to have a great spot so near my house, with a gorgeous location right on the river. I know I will be here at least a few more times this summer and I can't wait to try all the menu items, as well as the drinks! Great job Tate's!! read more

Stopped by for lunch yesterday. Waited around at the hostess podium for a few minutes before we were noticed. I really like the decor and ambiance. I like how the bar seating looks out at the river, rather than all the liquor you could drink. I had the fish sandwich which was pretty great and was an ample sized hunk of fish on a fresh brioche bun. Fries were nice and crispy and well seasoned. I was a little let down by the beer selection they were out of stock. I was just surprised that the restaurant being affiliated with Eli Cannon's, and they were out of several of the Eli Cannon's brews. We held a rehearsal dinner on Friday August 1 which was fabulous! The venue was beautifully decorated and we had the use of the outside deck as well as the upstairs event room. Started at a 3 because we waited 50 minutes for a table outside when there were tables open that we eventually sat at. Drink at the bar, The Ark, was great as well as the service there was great. It was a Sunday so ordered off the brunch menu. Both the Italian scramble and the lemon ricotta rigatoni were very tasty. Great view for a nice day. Food came out timely. The food was delicious. The parking lot was full but it's a huge place, so we were able to be seated right away. The waiter did a great job.

Had a great experience at the bar last night. Fabulous skinny margarita where the bartender recommended a fellow restaurant's tequila which was delicious, tuna tacos were off the hook and the Turkey Sandwich and the smash burger were all delicious. Ambiance: Love the airy/organic decor and views of the river (so glad somewhere is taking advantage of this in Middletown!), but the interior is ridiculously LOUD even when half the room is empty. Something about the acoustics in there just makes everything echo. Felt like I had to yell for the friend across from me to hear me and even then she struggled. Outside this is not an issue but if it's hot as it has been, there's a big trade off. Hope they can do something to solve for this! Food: I honestly didn't go in with many expectations but it was pretty decent with generous portion sizes. Loved the zucchini chips, crab cakes, cold dip trio. Elote wrap was tasty but could have used more dressing/spice. Fries are crisp and hot every order but could use a little more of that peri peri seasoning. Service: Been here twice, the first time they said there was a wait for outdoor seating but I saw 3-4 tables empty outside the entire time I was dining so that was a bit frustrating. Not sure what to make of that. Had the same server both times and he was great with making accommodations and substitutions. Not half bad. Still carrying a heavy census from opening day, I wasn't upset with my decisions. Clams casino and raw oysters to cover my seafood fix, and several delicious jalapeno-derived deliciousness provided the social lubricant needed when placed next to the exit to the porch. We are so happy this place has re-opened. The view is gorgeous on the river. The new owners have done a great job with this restaurant inside is very clean as it is a brand new build the one thing aesthetically that I thought was missing is a little pop of color, there's a nice space above the trim of the ceiling that would make for a cute spot for some color or local art. We got the mahi dinner and the lobster roll. Both were delicious although I personally wish the mahi had more of that mango salsa. It was so yummy and less of the tomato sauce I found the tomato sauce to be a little confusing pallet wise with the other flavors of the salsa and rice. Their crabcakes were out of this world, fresh and delicious. Same with the shrimp cocktail. For drinks my husband got a spicy tequila drink that was on the menu. I cannot remember the name of it and I got the Kermit's revenge super tasty and sweet. Our server was Cole, and he was awesome very attentive, and no mistakes were made. Tates it was okay....Its more the ambience drinks and water views for this place than the food. Tried the foccaccia grilled cheese was okay but was more like a sandwich than a grilled cheese, and the plumaki bowl was not good, the rice and edamane tasted old and all the flavors just didn't go well together food was cold when it got to the table. I would probably return only to enjoy cocktails on the deck. read more

I was so excited to go eat at this place. My expectations dropped the moment our server was not giving a good customer service, let's start with what we order Drinks I order a smoke on the water my husband had a margarita both of those drinks did not taste good at all. The food flavors where not the best we had the hot lobster roll ,monkey smash burger and the grilled Gorgonzola rib eye, the silver dollar crab cake and last a Caesar salad the only thing that tasted good, our server was not attending to us it took him some tike to bring what we asked. Overall I will not recommend this place also is overpriced. The ambience was nice because it's near the water and it has a pretty view. read more

I have tried to go here twice because I have heard it is good. But the staff at the door is inattentive, immature, and unwelcoming. Last two times I have left. Last night there were a couple of people waiting at the door but the people who were taking names were nowhere to be found. After a few minutes, I peeked in the dining them and saw them talking. Finally, one came back in to the host/ess station. I went up and said hello. [Dull stare mumbled hello in return] I then asked how long to wait for a table for four people for dinner. [Dull stare, hesitation] "You are number seven." Oh, I say, how long more or less would that be. [Hesitation, dull stare]. "I'm not allowed to say." PLEASE GET A REAL PERSON TO WORK THE DOOR. Food was good. Service was good atmosphere. I really enjoyed being outside on the deck so overall I give them a good review. The only problem is they need to get the fire alarm system fixed. The lights went on pre-recorded warning came on for everybody to leave the building, and apparently this happens quite often and is triggered by something in the kitchen. Someone finally got it right... The location of this restaurant (right on the edge of the Connecticut River) makes it place you want to go to with a beautiful views of the river and the Portland Bridge... there's always been one problem with this place over the years (decades?) and that is the food was never good and the constant flooding always left the building with a certain smell not conducive to provide a good eating environment lol... Well, I'm happy to announce that the new owners got it right... addressed the flooding problem but most of all are making great food!! I had the burger and it was cooked perfectly with fresh ingredients.. all the food looked good and I'm looking forward to trying everything ... tuna nachos is up next for sure... The kale salad with salmon was very good. My friends had the chicken salad sandwich with fries which they enjoyed. The berry sangria was delicious. The ricotta cheese cake was excellent! The flourless chocolate cake was hard as a chocolate bar! We should have sent it back. My friend left hers after chopping off 1/4 of it. I took my leftover "cake" home because I enjoy chocolate bars. Pieces of it were flying off plate as we tried to eat it with our spoon! It was comical to watch! I did mention it to the waitress who said she will tell the pastry chef. The remodel is relaxed chic and the dock is ready for you to arrive by boat. They no longer have the outside bar- all dinning area now. Our waitstaff was attentive without rushing us. The food was wonderful- each of us ordered something different and shared- great way to get a taste of everything. They do have items for the kidos and fun kid cups- the little girl next to us was loving her family time experience. The prices are reasonable and reflective of the food quality. read more

This place is a huge step up from what it used to be. The interior is gorgeous, the bar has been renovated to give you a wide open look at the CT River, and the food and drink is competitive for the area. Unlike other water side restaurants with gimmicky sweet drinks, the cocktails here were excellent and use real materials. The service was great, food came out quick and we didn't wait long between drinks. Highly recommend! read more

Tonight was such bad service at Tates. This is the 5th time we've been there since they opened. The last two visits have not been good food service. Today was the worst. We didn't get one of our entrees. Told the food runner who said they would followup but didn't. The server never checked on us so we didn't have the opportunity to ask for it. When they noticed we were done eating and came over to clear we let them know that an item hadn't been delivered. He apologized but gave an excuse that they were handling a situation inside. We then got the bill that still has the missing entree on it. Really love the location but the food service needs to be addressed. read more
