Party of four . We had reservations for an early lunch. We ordered and requested an order of fried calamari while we waited for our main dishes. Well, we got the calamari in a few munites, plus iced tea. But no lunch. We waited over an hour and finally got up to see why we had not been served. Our waiter said it would be right out, but after a couple of munites it was obvious they had forgotten us and it wasnt going to be "two Minutes". Sadly it is right on the river with views, has a nice menu with clams, scallops and shrimp among other items, but the kitchen is not up to keeping abrest of the orders. read more

Tate's Restaurant Review Rating: 1/5 stars. Reservation Process. Honestly, don't even bother making reservations for indoor seating at Tate's if you are planning something special, because they don't take requests into consideration anyway. We went to Tate's in Middletown for a Saturday lunch at one o'clock to celebrate our friends' 30th anniversary. I go to Tate's regularly to enjoy lunch, dinner, or even happy hour, so I am very familiar with the restaurant. I specifically desired that cozy, comfortable bay window cove for the vibe, privacy, and intimate experience it offers for celebrating friends. I called two weeks ahead of time to lock down that exact spot, and the hostess, Ayla, assured me it was all set. Just to be safe, I called back the day before to confirm everything again. Today, was the event at 1 pm, and Even though we arrived fifteen minutes early, we were told our table was already given away. When I brought it up, the staff just brushed it off with a casual, "Oh well, we can get you another window seat"--acting like our confirmed arrangements meant nothing at all. While we made the best of our afternoon, having a restaurant completely ignore a carefully planned reservation ruins the vibe right from the start. Save yourself the trouble of planning ahead--just show up whenever you want, because advance reservations clearly mean nothing here anyway. read more

I was extremely excited to try Tates thinking that finally someone came to that space to build a great restaurant. I was a little let down and that may be because my expectations were do high. We originally wanted to sit on the patio but rain was in forecast so we sat inside. It was a nice effort to add some sound barriers but it was so incredibly loud. At first I sat across from my date but couldn't hear a word being said so I moved to be the side. It was a little better but found myself saying "huh" too much. I ordered a margarita which tasted delicious as they use their own margarita mix and not a mixed one. Unfortunately I only ordered one because it seemed to small for the $10 price tag. My date had a coors light Dinner was good. Steamers for appetizer were very good and perfect amount of seasoning. My coconut mahi was blackened and came with am extremely delicious salsa of pineapple and mango (menu said avocado was part of salsa but it was sliced and placed on top of fish). The coconut rice and red pepper coulis were amazing. The salsa, rice and coulis made the most refreshing bite. It was a combo I never knew I needed in my life read more

I'm giving this restaurant 4.5 stars! As many locals know, this location has been around for a while with many different names. Dare I say... Someone has finally gotten it right?! It's bright, CLEAN, no weird smells. Even the bathroom is nice. The menu has a Mediterranean undercurrent, which I love. For you fellow pescetarians, I had a mushroom gyro. My husband was happy with his chicken wrap. We sat out on the deck, which has a lovely view of the CT River and a few wandering souls. read more

Hello, I attended a baby shower at Tates in Middletown this past Sunday and wanted to share what an incredible job Kaylee did throughout the event. She was attentive from start to finish, consistently checking in around the room to make sure everything was taken care of and that guests had what they needed. One thing that especially stood out was her ability to read the room. When the mom-to-be began thanking guests, Kaylee thoughtfully lowered the music volume without being asked, allowing everyone to hear and enjoy the moment. She was professional, kind, and clearly took pride in providing excellent service. Her attention to detail helped make the event run smoothly and created a wonderful experience for everyone attending. I would absolutely return for future events and wanted to make sure her outstanding service was recognized. read more

Took my neighbor to Tate's for her Birthday Lunch [97]. Got a table on the deck under an umbrella and got ready to enjoy a good meal. We both like Lobster Rolls and this was close enough for us with a short drive. She insists on the cold lobster roll and me the hot one. We were both pleased with the service, ambience and food. I think she got more lobster than me but she was probably bragging They both were delicious and filled with great lobster. We also both got the fries; she the regular and me the Piri Piri style. I won that contest as they were delicious and addictive. Her glass of Pinot Grigio was excellent. My Guinness non-alco was a disappointment but live and learn. We will definitely both be back! read more

Came here on a Monday around 7 after going to brownstone. It was insanely busy and we were told if we wanted to eat outside there were 10 other people waitlisted. So we opted to dine inside to cut down on time. Our waitress was in scrambles trying to keep up with the crowd and maintaining her tables, which we understand that's managements issue, not hers. She did her absolute best bopping around the tables. The calamari was good, nothing out of the ordinary. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals, the chicken tacos were a typical dish but a good bite. By the time we were finishing our food they started packing up for the night and putting chairs on top of tables. We ended up being the last people upon closing but they were nice enough to let us finish our meals while they closed. It would be nice to return for the outside dining on a less crowded night for a fair chance. read more

Beautiful view, great food, clean and friendly staff! Very recommended place to enjoy with fr and famil.

I was recently here for a breakup dinner, or lunch lol, he picked the spot and it as my first time seeing this place. and I'll admit I felt I was too loud (I'm pretty sure I was) for this restaurant and I'm sure I was like that for the first hour, this place was really great and they gave me and my ex the space to talk. I'm extremely sorry if we made any of your staff and your other customers uncomfortable, and I also sorry and annoyed that he didn't tip our waitress with how amazing she was with us, he should've known better considering one of his sisters is one. A special shoutout to Ashley R as she was great despite the awkwardness we put everyone in. I'm sorry I couldn't tip more. I had a burger from there and it was fantastic I didn't even need to take it to go bc it was so good I finished it all lol. Overall aside from the situation I was in, this place was great I hope I can take my mom here soon! read more

Nice view of the Connecticut River. That was the highlight. Food mediocre, service the same. Unorganized and indifferent. Many better options a short distance away. read more

Great service perfect for date nights crab cakes are absolutely phenomenal and the drinks are great

Tates was recommended to me by a friend. We had an awesome late lunch/early dinner. Started with an app that was whipped feta with pistachios and peach chutney- mouth watering! My husband got the focaccia grilled cheese that was amazing. I had the hot lobster roll which was a generous serving with clarified butter plus extra butter on the side- fantastic. It was my second lobster roll of the season and it made the first one I had (at SoNo Seafood in Norwalk) look like I grabbed it at a gas station by comparison. We had one cocktail and one mocktail and they too were expertly crafted. Can't wait till our next visit. Ample outdoor seating overlooking Connecticut River- great setting Sat at the bar looking out at river as it was a hot humid day with no breeze. Service was excellent read more

1 for service. Our waitress was great but the whole place is super slow. Bus boy was lost and messy. Food was good - but fries were cold. Lobster on the cold lobster roll was solid / but overall lacked flavor and seasoning. Place was ok. Outside looked great but we were in read more

Go for the vibe maybe? Def not the hot lobster roll. It was in some type of cream? Honestly felt like it was yesterday's buttered lobster re heated- it was creamy and chunky which I've never seen? Inedible. read more

The food was decent, the place itself is a beautiful spot. This place has so much potential but it just doesn't hit the "5 star" mark for me, there's always something that impacts it. Solid service though the server did not approach us for a solid 5-7 mins after we sat down read more

Besides the most beautiful views, Tate's has an upbeat atmosphere, offers a creative menu, delicious cocktails, and friendly service. This is a lovely addition to Middletown! read more

Service was a little slow, went for lunch. Being able to sit on the river outside made it worth it. All the food/drinks were good! Docked 1 star because we waited over 20 minutes for the check to be picked up. I was with my girlfriend chatting, so we didn't mind, but if I had somewhere to be, I would be annoyed. read more

The food was delicious. The parking lot was full but it's a huge place, so we were able to be seated right away. The waiter did a great job.

Our party of 4 arrived at 4:30PM on Wednesday evening. Joanne seated us at Table 39, where we had a great view of the River and the Middletown High Crew Team practice. The ECBC Lager tap was inop so we ordered cocktails & mocktails...which were very well executed. Our entrees included the Mokey Smashburger, Pulmoki Bowl, Scallop Basket...preceded by an excellent Clam Chowder! Overall, we were very pleased with the food and impressed with the staff. We shall return! read more

We got there and were offered immediate seating inside or about a 30-minute wait for an outdoor table. We decided to sit inside. Our server let us know it was only his fifth day working at Tate's -- he was really nice and even went back to the kitchen to answer one of our questions. The service ended up being pretty slow, but it wasn't the server's fault; the kitchen seemed really backed up. For starters, we ordered the shrimp cocktail, buffalo chicken egg rolls, and kimchi steaks for the table. All the apps were great and everyone enjoyed them. After that, we had the clam chowder, which was very good, along with our entrées. The entrées were just okay overall -- the rigatoni stood out as very good, but everything else was average. It was a bit noisy inside, but we could still enjoy each other's company, and we had plenty of time to catch up since the food took so long to come out. We all agreed we wouldn't rush to go back, but maybe coming just for drinks and appetizers on the patio would be worth another visit read more

The good news: location, location, location. Right on the Connecticut River in Middletown. More good news, the zucchini chips and the cauliflower bites were excellent. The tuna nachos were a work of art. Now the bad news. The beautiful tuna nachos were a greasy salt bomb. The tuna and avocado were micro diced, so small as to have no flavor and barely there. A complete ripoff. Running the length of the restaurant are two bare metal AC ducts that drip condensation on diners while eating. And the noise. It's a newly opened place and they didn't spend a dime on sound dampening. read more

Eight of us arrived Saturday evening, 6ish, for a friendship get to gather. The parking lot was surprising empty. After drinks and an average meal, boxes and the bill came. The waitress whose tip was already added to the bill, disappeared. We waited 15 minutes or so to get the bill paid for the two couples and four singles but no one showed up. I took the $394 bill to the cash register and asked for itemized bill for us and was told, "we don't do that here, you figure it out." I paid the bill and dollars were thrown around in this mess, but we exited to an empty parking lot. We figured it out; ok meal, terrible management. Never again! read more

Not half bad. Still carrying a heavy census from opening day, I wasn't upset with my decisions. Clams casino and raw oysters to cover my seafood fix, and several delicious jalapeno-derived deliciousness provided the social lubricant needed when placed next to the exit to the porch. Two very picky little princesses approved of the kids faire, and my accompanients (that's my word now, I made it) picked off my plate while still denying their hunger. read more

So glad I get to be the first to review! Just went here last night and the food was incredible. My friends and I had the chicken sliders, clam chowder, strawberry salad and ribeye! Everything was cooked perfectly and the sauces, dressings, flavor on everything was spot on. The service was great as well thanks to Cole! So happy to have a great spot so near my house, with a gorgeous location right on the river. I know I will be here at least a few more times this summer and I can't wait to try all the menu items, as well as the drinks! Great job Tate's!! read more

Great view of the river! The ambience definitely deserves 5 stars but, unfortunately, the food did not deliver. The apps were delicious--I'd highly recommend the crab cakes and tuna nachos! Entrees, however, fell flat. I had the fried fish entree--it was fine but I expected a bit more for $28. My wife had the mahi which was dry and flavorless. The other entrees that our table ordered were similarly disappointing. Decent wine/cocktail list with some creative options and great summer sippers. Service was good--attentive server and friendly bartenders. read more

We dined here on a Friday night. We were seated at a high top at the bar area. The music from the Jazz trio was deafening even from across the room. People were shouting to be heard, which didn't help matters. The food was just good, not great. Servers were friendly, but check ins were few and far between I imagine because the place was extremely busy. I had the salmon bowl and my boyfriend had the chicken sandwich with roasted peppers. Menu is limited and the ambience was ruined for us by music that drowned out any conversation we attempted to have. read more

Stopped by for lunch yesterday. Waited around at the hostess podium for a few minutes before we were noticed. I really like the decor and ambiance. I like how the bar seating looks out at the river, rather than all the liquor you could drink. I had the fish sandwich which was pretty great and was an ample sized hunk of fish on a fresh brioche bun. Fries were nice and crispy and well seasoned. I was a little let down by the beer selection they were out of stock. I was just surprised that the restaurant being affiliated with Eli Cannon's, and they were out of several of the Eli Cannon's brews. Staff was friendly and professional, and the wait staff was attentive and quick. I would go back. read more

Overpriced subpar food. Yawn! Service was good but unfortunately we will not be back.

We held a rehearsal dinner on Friday August 1 which was fabulous! The venue was beautifully decorated and we had the use of the outside deck as well as the upstairs event room. We booked an igloo for $30 tonight for my birthday. The description for this stated it was for 2 hours, 4:30 to 6:30. The igloo was cozy and warm with a view of the CT river. The food was great and Alex our server was excellent. They even had someone come out to sing Happy Birthday to me. However, after that we were given our check and told we had to leave the igloo because they changed the booking time for the igloo to 1 hour and 45 mins instead of the 2 hours that was noted when I booked the igloo last week. What was an enjoyable experience up to that point quickly turned to a very disappointing end to our dinner. read more

Ambiance: Love the airy/organic decor and views of the river (so glad somewhere is taking advantage of this in Middletown!), but the interior is ridiculously LOUD even when half the room is empty. Something about the acoustics in there just makes everything echo. Felt like I had to yell for the friend across from me to hear me and even then she struggled. Outside this is not an issue but if it's hot as it has been, there's a big trade off. Hope they can do something to solve for this! Food: I honestly didn't go in with many expectations but it was pretty decent with generous portion sizes. Loved the zucchini chips, crab cakes, cold dip trio. Elote wrap was tasty but could have used more dressing/spice. Fries are crisp and hot every order but could use a little more of that peri peri seasoning. Service: Been here twice, the first time they said there was a wait for outdoor seating but I saw 3-4 tables empty outside the entire time I was dining so that was a bit frustrating. Not sure what to make of that. Had the same server both times and he was great with making accommodations and substitutions. Overall, I'll be back def some areas where they could step up a bit! read more
