One of the finest meals we had on our trip. We went with our hosts to a local favorite of theirs. It was fairly close by and a stand alone restaurant that had been enlarged from just a pub years ago when it was established. Our hosts were regulars and the staff was familiar to them. The descriptions of all the highlights of the specials as well as the main menu items made them all sound delicious and I will attest, they certainly were. Their warm house baked breads with soft butter started us well. I took the prix fixe special of the night and I could not have been happier. The scallops were numerous, the specialty gazpacho so filling, I only ate half, the tagliatelle was perfect. the grilled artichokes are a fave for me. I gave the ice cream from my cinnamon roll a la mode to my husband so it worked out well for both of us. All of us loved our food and the experience. But we were so talkative, I never got pics of their meals or any of our drinks. My husband loved his beer, my cousin her wine, her husband his drink. Republic Gastro Pub was the perfect spot for two childhood friends meeting up in Bloomfield, along with their husbands, and it could not have been better. The whole evening was fantastic. Shane took great care of us and struck that perfect balance of being attentive, personable, and making everything feel easy. He helped the night flow in a way that let us relax, laugh, catch up, and enjoy ourselves without ever feeling rushed. The dinners across the table were a hit, but my Moroccan lamb special was next-level. It was one of those meals where you take a bite and immediately stop mid-conversation because your full attention has been redirected to the plate. The flavors were rich, layered, and so unexpectedly good that I'm still thinking about it. This used to be a frequent place for us to dine, and tonight I think I cross it off my list. Service was good, very attentive. The updated front of the restaurant is beautiful. Dining outside is great. But, the menu has changed and there are a few tweaks and things that really disappointed me. The biggest thing was portions and price. My "go to" was always the beef stroganoff. I had that tonight. For $35 I got a portion that was more an appetizer than even a lunch portion. Luckily we started with wings. My wife had the pork. I don't know when the last time I left somewhere hungry. Food was good. Nothing wrong with the flavor, it just seems they skimped or reduced the portion to pay for the remodel. The menu items to get are the cheesesteak or burgers. The other thing that disappointed was the soft drink doesn't have free refills at $3.50 a glass. Bummer. I used to like it here. Overall, great restaurant. I had a hard time picking my drinks and food because everything looked very good and unique. The drinks in particular were very well balanced and thoughtfully curated. Ambience was cozy and upscale, with some prices to suggest this restaurant may be better suited for special occasions rather than your regular hang. Service was just-ok. No complaints but nothing special either, and the table near the door that we sitting at was probably near a heating vent because it was a little uncomfortably warm. Today was first time for Sunday brunch (have eaten lunch/dinner there many times before) For brunch I had the vegetarian Benedict- it was delicious! The eggs were perfectly poached! The home fries delicious! My friends had bacon with their breakfasts and said it was very crispy and delicious. Sunny day, sitting in their enclosed glass dining area was beautiful- very mellow. Great service, prompt seating and a great interior. Was in the area for work for a week and after having Republic after flying in on a Monday I went there twice for dinners having the same thing, the Philly. It's easily the best Philly I've ever had (with the caveat I've never been in Philly and had one from the city that started it all) it had the perfect sear on the beef with perfect seasoning and a great ratio of cheese to beef, the fries it came with were perfectly crisp and well seasoned as well. We also had an order of calimari which was out of this world and the new sauce they had on it was great. Drinks were also great. In the end of the day this place will be a must visit for me whenever I'm in town, and I'll riot if the Philly ever changes or gets removed. read more

The Resturant itself is lovely and very lively. Unfortunately for a party of six we were put up on the second floor and kid of forgotten about. The menu has plenty of apps and desserts but is lacking in a variety of entrees. The entrees we did get were very good though-burgers/turkey burger/pasta and fish and chips. There should be a warning on the pasta with spicy sausage because it was REALLY spicy. We ordered two dessert-the lava cake and the Baked Alaska. The lava cake was not fully cooked and was more like chocolate goo. The Baked Alaska was good. As for service, it was SLOW. Took forever to get our drinks to start and then awhile to get food to us. Like I stated earlier. We were seated in the corner upstairs so kind of forgotten about. It was a Wednesday night and we had a reservation so didn't expect the service to be so slow. Love the outdoor patio area for Sunday brunch. We only received 2 eggs with our 3 egg dish which we never complained about, but I do think it shows a lack of attention to detail that can be improved upon. The pork Milanese was delicious, the arugula salad on top was so fresh. The asparagus was cooked to perfection - I feel like it was plucked from a farm next door and the chef knew what they were doing - wasn't over cooked. Last evening we had an amazing meal with friends. We start with the appetizers of marinated beets and crispy Brussel sprouts- so delicious. I also had the Mexican chicken and potato soup . Just the right amount of spice for flavoring . The soup had a plentiful amount of chicken potato and other veggies. The sour crème topper was beautifully decorative. Our meals were amazing. This is a very nice restaurant and pub. We had a late lunch there on a Friday. I had the corn chowder, which was one the best chowders I've had anywhere. I also had an entree green salad, which was superb, though a bit small for an entree salad. My brother had a burger and he liked it very much. The ambience is excellent and the decor is fine. My only suggestion is that they repaint the restroom doors on both sides, since they're worn and aren't in keeping with visual quality of the rest of the place. Somehow, this is like THE place to meet in Bloomfield? I got there early to meet a group, and saw no less than three groups gathering members in the parking lot, waiting for the doors to open. One group had matching T-shirts, what sociology! On that note, there is a decent parking lot in back but on a busy night, you may find yourself sizing up the post office across the street. Our server was very friendly, answered any questions on the menu without a hint of annoyance, and offered her own opinion when asked. It was a valuable opinion; everyone was happy with their food and there were no regrets! The food was also quite good. The McDowell burger was juicy and the meat well seasoned. (Apparently it's named for a movie reference?) I did have to cut it into pieces because it's huge! The fries are well salted and have a good crisp to the outside. We decided to go to Republic for our Friday boys' lunch. We were seated upstairs and had Shane as our server. Shane was engaging and willing to play as we joked about life. Several of us tried the Rueben lunch special, which was corned beef on marbled rye with thousand island dressing and sauerkraut. We started the meal with deviled eggs that arrived in a basket resembling a birds nest. Beer selection was good and I was able to enjoy a hazy New England style IPA. For desert, we shared a Baked Alaska that had the merigue charred table side by lighting the 151 Rum on the serving plate. All and all a very good meal for our Friday lunch gathering. read more

They have very cool names for their cocktails and of course a nice full bar. Food was good. I did hear that the burger bun was on the greasy side which took away the flavor of the burger. The chicken coconut curry chicken lettuce wraps, fruit cup, french toast, scramble eggs were good. The deviled eggs were cute In a wooden cage. We joked that they were cage-free eggs . Others in the group had the sangria and said it was good. I had the Peachin out and it was not peacy, however, just ok for me. If you like more of a bitter drink then that's one to try. Fantastic food today! Great ambiance. Waitstaff was attentive and on it. Host was a little lost and slow at first but that's it. He took an uncomfortably long time to count out 2 menus it seemed. The kitchen staff though makes this place shine, as it should. They pump out some delicious meals. The menu is pretty fantastic too, all sorts of different things and stuff you don't see at every other place. I had the mole pablano nachos which were massive and a meal in and of itself. We also tried the zucchini fries and the crispy brussel sprouts which were terrific--fresh and well roasted. The sliced apples on top were a welcomed surprise. It was great how they indicated which menu options were Vegetarian or gluten free friendly, but I noticed the impossible burger option was the only entree that was noted as being vegetarian. I highly recommend this establishment for your next gathering of good eats. Republic Gastropub is offered by the same parent company as South Windsors Mill on The River--so you know we are talking about good quality. We went in the late afternoon so parking wasn't a problem and they weren't too busy. But I can imagine reservations and getting there early would be beneficial for the dinner crowds. read more

The bartender was very nice, the ambiance was nice We got the menu and I was a bit surprised how expensive everything was. I decided on the Caesar salad with chicken. $15.00 for the salad, $11.00 for added chicken. A bit pricey, but I've had some sensational salads that were pricey, but tasted great, and left you satisfied. My coworker got a Greek salad with chicken. They were the most pathetic salads I have ever seen. A dinner plate was half full with salad greens. Basically some romaine and iceberg with basic croutons thrown on top. The dressing was bland. That cost 15.00, now comes the chicken for 11.00 a thin little piece with fake grill marks, couldn't be 4 oz, set on the other side of the plate all by itself. Presentation was severely lacking. I've been to Republic on several different occasions, each time I've had delicious food and wonderful service. I was there most recently just a few days ago. Republic is a rustic gastro pub, the whole interior is wood. They have an upstairs and a downstairs open for dining. The whole space is very beautiful. In the menu I noticed they had the Superfood Salad. I knew that's what I'd be getting when I saw it. My mom got the Rhode Island Calamari with the sweet potato fries. For my drink, I got the Grapefruit Cocktail. Grapefruit is one of my favorite fruits, I love how bitter they are. My cocktail was tequila based, and very, very bitter from the freshly squeezed grapefruit. I can see many people not liking it. I didn't like it at first, but it got better, the more I drank it, and once my salad came out. My salad looked and tasted incredible. It was a generous portion, filled with lettuce, spinach, chia seeds, avocado, plenty of green here. It was topped with shaved brussels sprouts, blueberries, almonds and dressed with vinaigrette dressing. This was delicious, fresh and so filling! My mom's fried calamari were also really tasty. These had a bit of a kick to them because of the hot cherry peppers. The sweet potato fries were a great add on, thinly cut and crispy. Everything was delicious at Republic. My husband and I went to Republic in Bloomfield, CT for our anniversary, and our entire night was completely ruined. The food was, without exaggeration, some of the worst we've ever had. I ordered the short rib, which was either a completely different cut of meat or such poor quality that it didn't resemble a short rib at all. It was burned beyond saving and drowned in a horrific sauce that tasted like someone mixed tomato paste, water, and burnt onion together. It made me genuinely nauseous and sick to my stomach. My husband ordered the coq au vin chicken, and it was just as disappointing -- bland, dry, and sad. Even the cheese plate was a joke. It was supposed to feature four different cheeses, but we got two servings of manchego, one slice that tasted exactly like deli American cheese, and a tiny cube of blue cheese. To make matters worse, the two guests seated next to us were extremely loud and obnoxious, and it was obvious they'd been acting that way long before we arrived. It would've been nice if the staff had seated us elsewhere or intervened, especially on what was supposed to be a special occasion. My husband has worked in the kitchens of two different country clubs, and he could cook circles around this inexperienced chef. Between the poor food, careless presentation, and overall lack of attention to the dining experience, Republic was an absolute disappointment. I have been to republic several times before and have asked for no cheese on my zucchini fries (since I have a slight dairy allergy) and they have never once said it was a problem to remove. However, this previous visit, when asked the same question, the waiter delivered me a meal with zucchini fries smothered in cheese. I then asked if I can swap for fries without cheese and they informed me it would be a $10 up-charge and I never asked for one's without cheese (which I am confident that i did inquire about no cheese). I have been here a few times in the last few years and I can say I have just had an average experience each time. The food here is their downfall along with their prices which are way too high for the amount and quality of food you get. Some of the food looks the part, but is definitely not high-quality even though they say it is. Even the burgers seem to be just frozen patties and nothing fresh or quality. The vibes here are good and that's most likely why people come to drink and enjoy some appetizers. We arrived around 5ish or so but didn't need reservations even though they were made incase. Steve was our waiter and he was awesome! Very attentive and nice. Also, for me I was happy they had GF options but for my non Gluten Free friends there are many yummy options available to you! There is cross contamination which steve made clear to me. There isn't dedicated grills or fryers. I had ordered the Brussel sprouts for apps which were sweet , crispy and delish. For my meal I order a GF Philly cheese steak! Man ohh man was it good. And the regular Philly steak came in a different roll and it was much bigger. At least it appeared to be . But very filling and tasty .
