I always try to make it a trip trip out to J. Timothy's Tavern when I visit back in the northeast. Ordered both the Gold BBQ and Buffalo flavors dirt style, and they were absolutely delicious and dank as per usual. The Gold BBQ wings were my favorite--crispy, sticky, and packed with flavor. They had the perfect balance of sweet, smoky, and tangy without being overpowering. The Buffalo wings were excellent too, with a classic sauce that had just the right amount of heat and a great buttery finish. The wings came out crispy even after being sauced, which is harder to do than most places make it look. Service was friendly, the atmosphere felt like a classic neighborhood tavern, and you can tell they've been doing this for a long time. If you're anywhere near Plainville and like wings, this place is definitely worth the stop. I'll be thinking about those Gold BBQ wings for a while. read more

We had a rehearsal dinner at J Timothy's at the Boarding Room and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Online the restaurant has PDF menus including buffet, plated, shower as well as clear descriptions of the rooms (wine loft, boarding room and gathering place.) I emailed J Timothys and the event staff quickly got back to me about availability. The event staff (shout out especially to Nikki, Jenna and Rachael) impressed me with how efficient and well they responded to my questions about menu, settings, timing of food, decorating, music, room setup, alcohol choices etc. They even suggested a specialty meal for one guest who was allergic to garlic. The day of the event we were able to decorate and both the waitstaff and event staff were available for questions. The food was fantastic. We had a cheese platter, veggie platter, veggie lasagna, short ribs, stuffed chicken breast, veggie medley and of course J Timothy's famous dirt wings. The only complaint I heard from the guests was how stuffed they were (and many just couldn't eat much the next day) because the food was so good. One guest wanted to bring home the gravy from the short ribs. The drinks were terrific. We had everything from mocktails to margaritas to of course draft beer and they all were great. Finally the dedicated waitstaff that worked the event were absolutely fabulous. It was a Friday at J Timothy's which is always busy and yet they managed to get drinks and food up to the room efficiently. They went over our food choices with me just before the event started and clarified what we had ordered and when it should be brought out. They made sure that the special meal was delivered when everyone else would be eating dinner food and were amazingly helpful throughout the end of the event. I absolutely recommend J Timothy's for lunch or dinner events and am grateful that they made our special evening one that was relaxed and kicked off an amazing wedding weekend. Thank you! read more

A justifiable locally revered American Classic, this massive restaurant is one of the biggest I've ever seen outside of Texas, and certainly in the North East. Located on a busy stroad in a proudly blue collar stetech of CT, housed in a gargantuan Colonial Era Tavern that's presumably been expanded in the intervening eras that nonetheless gloriously shows every one of its many years of age, old school checkerboard tablecloths, dark wood and lived in atmosphere. Think a New England roadhouse and you start to get the general vibe. Service is always courteous and fast and the huge place seemingly employs a sizable number of local youth due to its size and scale. I'm a sucker for great wings, the now foundational American dish of which truly exceptional versions of are far more difficult to find than one would assume, and the ones here are both exceptional and unique. Perfectly sized and reliably crispy, especially if you take them up on the house speciality of preparing them "dirt style" wherein they receive a second post-causing trip in the fryer. While I'm partial to the classic buffalo sauce, the house specialty of hot and ccs sauce combined is also quite tasty when given the dirt treatment. The rest of the menu continues with other excellent versions of Classic Americana in food form like an equally locally famous perfectly executed French onion soup, and a nourishing chicken pot pie with an oversize buttery and flaky pastry top dwarfing it's serving dish with it's xl circumference,. I've never had a chance to try the massive prime rib that you see gracing more tables than not but I very much hope to on some future visit. read more

As a mega pretzel fan, I thought the Tailgate Pretzel here was solid (4-stars) and a great shareable appetizer. The buffalo chicken tenders were other-worldly: absolute perfection from first bite to last in terms of flavor and, in my opinion, the perfect level of heat. I've been so excited to try their food. I attended a beautiful private event here in their event room that holds about 70ish people. The room is gorgeous with round tables, great lighting and our own private bar that's not serving the rest of the restaurant. I saw the wings on Food Network. Yes, they're delicious but it's an hour away from me. I wouldn't drive out for just the wings. We had chicken Francise, roasted garlic potatoes, penne a la vodka, vegetable medley and a salad. Food was okay, a little bland for me but I'm not sure if it's because they cooked it in bulk. I'll have to try it again on a date night and reevaluate. Drinks were all great. My favorite was the dragonfruit margarita! Great selection of beers as well. The staff is WONDERFUL! They were so attentive and accommodating. I mentioned it was warm in the room and the ceiling fans and air conditioning was turned on immediately. It was 100+ degrees out and they had the AC on but it needed an extra push. I was super happy about that because most places wouldn't care but they did! The restaurant is tavern style with wood beams and plenty of dining areas. This place is like a time capsule... old photos and rough-hewn beams. Low ceilings and murmurs of the past. (It reminded me so much of the smoke-filled restaurants my parents used to take us to in the 70s!) My husband and I went (he had been there probably 30 years ago!) and wanted to see if it was still there, and still good. It was! The server was friendly and helpful (Mikayla?) and turned me on to the "dirt wings" -- sort of a combination between Buffalo and BBQ? The garden salad was crispy and cold... with little julienned matchsticks of summer squash. (I had never had that before, and now I'll make it at home!) The clam chowder was delicious, the fries were crispy and hot... and the ambiance is like stepping into the past. I've been to J.Tim's countless times over the years, going back well before they achieve local fame for their dirt (double-fried) Buffalo wings. Those are consistently delicious, - but insanely expensive. Like some other places, when the temporary wing cost spoke subsided a few years ago (now back to pre-Covid $2.50 lb at supermarkets!), they kept prices at max++. That said, there are many other scrumptious enters & apps, from burgers to comfort food. There's also plenty of draft choices in their full bar menu. There are only three flavors to choose from and I got the sweet chili which was a basic sweet chili popeyes sauce. The service was quick but too quick for what I ordered so I wonder if the food was already cooked beforehand or a canceled order from a previous customer??? Who knows. 3 of us checked this spot out over the weekend around 1pm, no reservations in hand on a Sunday. The wait was 25 minutes but we got lucky with 3 seats opening in a booth in the bar area. Overall, the food, service, and ambiance all contributed to the 4 star rating. The food is good, solid, pub fare - but nothing to write home about in my opinion. The wings were good, but not "blow my socks off" good. The way the wings were described and the awards it won, I would expect a lot more. They were standard wings I get at any bar. I enjoyed my chicken pot pie. The filling was savory, chicken was of good quality and cooked well, and puff pastry was nice on top. Note - this isn't a full pot pie with the crust etc. For a party of 3 and 2 rounds of beer, 2 orders of six wings, and 1 entree per person, including tip our bill came to $180. Unpopular opinion, I'm not blown away by their wings. Dirt style is sauced and fried and then sauced again, which in my opinion makes them a too salty. If you want them hotter they add more Tabasco, maybe it's because I'm not the biggest fan of Tabasco as it's a little vinegar forward for me. We got the onion straws appetizer which was a huge portion but they were so grease soaked as if the fryer temperature wasn't hot enough. My salad was excellent, great portion, presentation was great, lots of toppings. My boyfriend enjoyed his pierogies. The atmosphere is rather loud and busy whether you're in the dining room or the bar even on week days. (I work in the industry and you can tell effort was put into streamlining this operation). When I called they asked if I was just doing wings, they told me what time slots they have available simple. It was seamless. When I got there , I love that there is literally a separate room for to go, so it was not overwhelming for a host or a bartender. They had a lot of merch and beers to goin that room, which crossed another thing off my to do list! (Beers) My order was ready right when they said, which is a bonus. My CT native friend has been raving about this place to me for years so I finally got to try it a few months ago. The space is huge inside, with a second floor. There's a combination of bar seating, high tops, and booths. We had no trouble getting seated. The service was also great! For food, we got: - Tater tot poutine: good but probably wouldn't get again to save space for the wings - dirt style original buffalo: such an interesting texture because of the way they're prepared. Really liked the level of sauce - Buffalo chipotle dry rub: a great accompaniment to the more saucy wing for interesting variety of textures and mouth feels. surprisingly really liked it (maybe more than the other ones we got!)
