My friend and I stopped by Hop Haus in Berlin for dinner. This Hop Haus is located in Connecticut, not in Germany. I don't have any outdoor pictures, honestly because it was too cold, and I just ran in, then I ran to my car. It's an all glass establishment, I saw my friend sitting in the middle booth from my car. The inside is spacious with a variety of seating options. The wood tops on the tables and countertops give it a modern feel. This place is known for wings, I'm not a fan. Additionally, they have tacos, burgers, nachos and other bar food. I selected Lou's Fig Melt. This was a tasty, sweet sandwich. It was filled with cheddar, goat cheese, bacon and fig jam. The chips on the side were very salty, I wish I substituted them for something else. I enjoyed the sandwich. My friend got the Duck Confit Eggrolls. These are a unique twist on eggrolls. They are stuffed with very tender duck meat and mac & cheese. It had dip on the side. This had a few textures going on. Crispy and cool on the outside, hot, cheesy and tender on the inside. We've been here many times and have always had a good experience in the past. Even if there was a hiccup here or there, it remained on our list. Today was like a bad movie. We assumed the place would be packed as we headed in to watch the 1:00 game. But it was dead. Which we were kind of relieved because we weren't worried about finding a table but also kind of perplexed because any other place that serves wings on a Sunday during football season is bursting at the seams. We walked in and stood at the hostess station waiting to be seated for about 5 minutes and didn't see an employee at all. My husband finally just walked over to the bar area and spotted someone around the corner. He asked if we could sit and she was somewhat agreeable to the idea. Thankfully our server McKenna was a delight. She was attentive and efficient. The French onion soup was fantastic. The wings were fine but not as good as I remember. They used to have a crisp to them. Now they are just kind of soggy. The kids liked their chicken tenders although I thought it looked like they had been in the fryer a tad too long. I could get past all that except I can't overlook the lack of management and the terrible bartender. We observed multiple people come in and stand at the hostess station for excessive amounts of time before anyone bothered to greet them. There were people at the bar with empty drinks and the bartender was standing around the corner on her phone while people waited. It was just a bad movie unfolding before our eyes. It was an experience for sure. This place used to be and could be amazing - they just need better hands on management and something to draw the crowd in on Sundays. I have eaten at Hop Haus twice and also went for drinks only in the past. While I was excited about the gastro pub in Berlin, it didn't meet my expectations this last time I went. The good: The restaurant has plenty of beer and drink options as well as a nice selection of appetizers (pretzels, wings, potato chip nachos, etc). The decor was great and I liked the space. However, there were quite a few fruit flies hovering at our table so that was annoying. The not-so-good: The first time we ate there, we got burgers and fried chicken sliders. It was decent bar food. We just went this past Saturday for dinner. Ordered drinks, wings as an app, I ordered the bronzed Salmon/risotto special and my husband ordered the Cuban with a side salad. Wings were a good size and the sauce was tasty. However, neither of us were that impressed with our entrees. The Cuban sandwich was not your traditional Cuban - it had a lot of ingredients which is good, but was also hard to eat as it was super greasy and got all over his hands. My salmon was cooked to the right temperature but I didn't really care for the taste. The butternut squash risotto that is sat on top of was very dense and stuck to the plate. It was supposed to have cherry tomatoes and spinach mixed in but I didn't see any. Service was also lacking - there were a number of times that we were waiting for a quite a long time while other servers were at the tables around us. Maybe 10 mins to get a box, another 15 mins to get the check, another 15-20 mins to get our card swiped. It didn't seem busy in the restaurant but we just never saw our server. I never even got a water refill. So- unfortunately this is off my list of restaurants to return to unless we are just getting drinks and apps. read more

(Last visited March 13, 2025.) I've visited Hop Häus quite a few times and have managed to check out a variety of dishes both before and after the legendary Von Hurd joined the squad. Here's the summation of my experiences here. Atmosphere/Appearance: I love the vibe in here. It's so open, chill, laid back and it's a really come-as-you-are sort of place which I definitely fancy. The music is a bit upbeat, there's a private parking lot, the staff are friendly and take good care of you, what more could you want? Food: I won't go over all 15+ things I've had here, but I'll highlight a few of them. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich is delightful. Tender, buttery, spicy and satisfying. The wings here are good, but you have to be careful. Depending on who's in the kitchen, your wings will come out really dry or tender and juicy. That is an inconsistency that's not okay in my book. I hope they've figured that out now. My favorite flavor is the Buffalo Blue that gives you a bit of spice with mild creaminess. I was also a big fan of the Bison Cast Iron Mac & Cheese, but could use some hot sauce on that thang! Lol. The Garlic Parmesan wings are a bit dry... and lacked flavor, but not everyone can get those right. Overall, the food here is solid. I haven't ventured much into the entrees since I tend to stick to wings when I hit up places like these. Value: Very affordable. It's a neighborhood bar/tavern so you won't break the bank here. Hop Haus is a craft eatery and gastro pub that serves locally sourced food, craft beers, and cocktails. There are two locations, one in Southington and one in Berlin. The Southington location opened in 2014. My family and I decided to get lunch at this location. It appears to be under some residences and parking was spacious. The restaurant was open and airy; I like the rustic look with exposed pipes and fake vines. The service was quick and friendly. I started off with a pistachio coquito; that was creamy with hints of coconut. It was a tasty drink. Then for my meal, I got the pimento and jalapeno burger; this had Haus made pimento cheese, sweet pickled jalapenos, Haus pickles, and chipotle with a side of fries. The burger good, it just need some sweetness to it in my opinion. I was hoping the cheese had some sweetness to it because all the pimento cheeses I've had before did. The fries were extra crispy and salty, the way I like it. My family enjoyed their food too. My little boys loved the Mac and cheese and house made chips. My husband loved his burger and fries. They had an extensive drink menu and many good options on their food menu. They offer happy hour and trivia nights on Wednesdays. The best part about this place is their extensive beer selection, which should be the case if you're called hop haus. However every time I've gone the food has been average at best. Wow. Simply wow. Full candor, I'd have given a 4.75 (just a touch below 5) if I could but as there is no partial option, they got the round up to 5 stars. We went on a Saturday night and the place was hopping. The ambiance is well suited for smaller groups or in the bar area for colleagues or friends. We had 2 kids and it worked for us as well though we did have a annoying table next to us who let their kids run around the table for a good 10 minutes bumping into our table and causing general craziness. That's not on the restaurant so much but that family, but the tables are close enough that it was a bit annoying. As to the food and options, it is worth a try in my estimation. We started with a poutine and the whole family loved it. The bison sandwich I got was very flavorful and the sauce hit solidly with me as did the bahn mi for the wife. The kids meals were ok for them though nothing spectacular there. Few places do anything amazing for the kids menu so I can't really knock that for the review. Service was good. Not spectacular, not bad, but solid. The waitress could use to pay a bit more attention when walking by tables but it didn't seem to delay the meal much. We're fans of Hop Haus Southington so we thought we would give Berlin another try since our first time was not stellar - glad we did. Only popped in for a beer and a snack but the service was very friendly, the place was clean and the beers were varied. IMO too many high alcohol and/or nitro so I settled on a yuengling but as long as there is one thing for me on draft, I'm good. I thought the crisps were good but the ranch was too sweet and not ranchy enough if that is a word - needed a bit more zing/tart buttermilk type taste but everyone has different taste - next time we would get the blue cheese. By the time we left, place was crowded and things coming out of the kitchen smelled good - since it is closer to our house than Southington will be back. Something happened on my lazy quest to one day visit the Plantsville Hop Haus. A closer Hop Haus opened in Berlin, CT first. So Berlin it was. Hop Haus covers the first level, front part of a multi-use office building. Lots of windows, natural light and wood. Open floor plan. A nice place to drink and eat. They also have outside tables. Service was very friendly and efficient. The food was generally pretty good, but I think Hop Haus can make improvements. I ordered the "Hop Haus Favorite" dish "The Frenchman Burger". The menu described it as a housemade patty with gruyere, greens and garlic aioli, and said that it is served in a bowl of "French Onion Fondue." I guess there's room to debate the definition of fondue, but the most common understanding of fondue is that it's a melty, drippy cheese sort of creation. The Frenchman Burger was actually a burger sitting in French Onion Broth, and there was some extra cheese in various spots. If the menu had described this as a burger sitting in French Onion Broth, I wouldn't have ordered it. Maybe some people, especially those counting carbs, would like this option. In any event, I think the menu could better describe the dish to appropriately set expectations. Parts of this dish were good. The burger was good quality. The aioli was very good. The onion broth, however, was too salty. I upgraded to fries, which were the thicker, square cut style. I also ordered a side of the "beer cheese" to go with it. The fries were pretty good. I would have preferred them a bit more done. The beer cheese was thinner and more liquidy than I like. It could have used more flavor as well. Overall, I rate my experience at 3.5 Stars, and I'll round up to 4 Stars. I understand that Hop Haus has good wings and I'll likely return for beer and wings in the near future. read more

We've heard so much about the wings at Hop Häus, but still hadn't made it to their original location. Now that the new location is even closer to us, we KNEW we had to get there for the soft opening a couple of weeks ago! This establishment is in a beautiful new building, and the space was designed for them (and they did a fabulous job) with plenty of parking! They have a great patio as well, and after talking to the owner while we were there we learned that they will have fire pits out there! I can't wait to enjoy the patio as the weather is getting nicer! We tried three flavors of wings and the Cauliflower Satay. I'd definitely get the cauliflower again (didn't expect to love it and the sauce as much as I did), as well as the Sweet & Heat wings and the Korean BBQ wings! I personally wouldn't get the garlic Parm again, but honestly I am NOT a fan of dry rub ever, so they have to be exceptional for me to ever want to order them. I just try one when someone else orders them, and usually learn I made the right choice with my yummy saucy wings that are often more flavorful, LOL. Our drinks were good, and they had many craft beer options for the beer drinkers. So, think gastropub and make a reservation now that they are officially open daily! The wings are gluten free also, which I know is huge to some people! We also learned that they'd have happy hour (but didn't during the soft opening, which is totally understandable) and you know that's my thing, so I'll definitely be back, probably many times, for that! Just moved to the area at the end of 2024 and have been making the rounds of all the local restaurants. Did not have the chance to dine in but ordered take out from here for my wife and I. There had been some hype built up and I was excited to try. Great selection from the menu and it seems like a cozy place to dine in, which I plan on trying to update this review. Take out was not that impressed. I ordered the bourbon burger, which aside from the bourbon "jelly" sauce, was nothing that impressed me. My wife ordered the hummus salad which looked like a homemade salad I left in the fridge for 2 days. The chicken tenders were good, but Korean barbeque was a bit of a let down compared to other restaurants that offer this flavor. I stumbled on this restaurant since I was in the area and asked for a recommendation for a place to go for Happy Hour w good food. I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. The food is very tasty and unique items on the menu. I tried the Korean BBQ wings and the Maple Bourbon Bacon wings and enjoyed them both. Also the bartender who's been there since they opened in October was awesome and knowledge with him he description of the items. Very good at his job and makes you feel right at home for my 1st time going there. The cauliflower Satay was unbelievably awesome tasting dish. Our dinner at Hop Haus was a go news bad news event. It's very much a sports bar atmosphere with a noise level to match. The staff was all friendly and helpful. We ordered the fried brussel sprouts. They weren't quite cooked enough and they and the special aioli were bland, bland. My wife ordered the Korean Bbq tacos. The meat and sauce was good, tasty. However the menu claimed they had kimchi. We literally dissected one of the tacos to find the slightest amount. Kimchi is a wonderful, spicy concoction that should be celebrated in a Korean taco. Not added so sparingly so as to add zero flavor. The Korean taco dish had a side of coleslaw. First this is an odd addition had there actually been any kimchi. But again this was bland-like a throw away. Should be any throw aways. Finally I ordered the Cubano. Not a perfect representation of this classic sandwich BUT perhaps the tastiest Cuban I've had outside of Tampa. Seems some tweaks and this could be great. read more

A lot of grease and it came out barely room temp. Yes we told server. Burger and fries. Soggy fries. Which is sad cuz they are hand cut and thicker than average but they were not crisp. Chicken sandwich. It was "good". Athough the ingredients would have made it seem it would be flavorful there wasn't much flavor and my Cajun fries along with being not fried enough had no Cajun seating. Not even salt. This is the second time for us. First time I had the braised lamb shanks with cheese grits by Chef Van Hurd. First of all. For a surprisingly delicious 3 star meal for the price we paid is unheard of. That's what caught my attention. Now I've been cooking for over 30 years and I find it hard to appreciate restaurant food as most is meh!!! The lamb shank dish and its flavor was a top 5 for me. Tonight I had the bouillabaisse and again for the price. Unheard of. So as far as Hop Haus goes I pay attention to the specials. You will not be disappointed. Come here for chicken and waffles. This four decker, maple-chili beauty alone is worth the trip here. Also, being so huge it's probably two meals. If you go for the Fish and Chips instead (awesome golden beer batter of course), the Cuban sandwich with a side of Cajun fries, or the poutines (with to without grilled pork), you'll leave stuffed. Yes, the bacon cheddar potato bombs are indeed the bomb, and make a very comforting entree. The interior is airy, the service friendly, and the clean restrooms were all nice. Tables that were set still had food on them. The floor looks like it hasn't been swept in a while, menus were sticky and stained, and our table had crusted food on it. After we were seated for over 5 minutes (they were not busy, two other tables were occupied) no one came over. Between it being dirty and no one coming over, we left. My husband and I dined here last Saturday around 2pm. The restaurant wasn't busy at all. Instead of writing a bad review I attempted to email the owner, but no response was received . We ordered four tapas.. the cauliflower was delicious and came out on time. The other tapas came out exactly an hour later. The deviled eggs were rubbery, with thick pieces of chewy old bacon. The waiter recommended the hush puppies, saying they were a big hit... they were bland, and the flavors didn't go well together. The shrimp tacos were also disappointing...the shrimp were small and overcooked. The taco shells were hard, and the toppings looked like they were slopped on by a 5 year old. The tacos were missing flavor and more sauce needs to be added to make the taco less dry and give it more flavor. We eat out all the time and this is the worst meal we've ever had. Also, you would think if your food came out that late at a time when dining is slow that the wait staff would apologize. But no that didn't happen either. The menu has some exciting new changes and still includes the original favorites. We devoured the "Short Rib Poppers" app served on their famous house-made potato chips and highly recommend it. My friend said "Lou's Fig Melt" is the best grilled cheese sandwich she's ever had! I had the "Giant Chicken Bacon" sandwich, it consists of a high quality, large chicken cutlet. I think this restaurant is probably a 4, but our experience last night was 1-2 star at best so I'm settling at a 3. Maybe some day I'll return and be able to upgrade my review. We had a 6pm reservation on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was busy, but not 100% capacity. When we walked in I saw a sign on the door saying they had only been open for 3 weeks, which told me all I needed to know about how our night went. Everything seemed fairly normal at first in terms of ordering and getting drinks. We had two children with us (1 and 9). We ordered our apps and food at the same time. Took 50 minutes for our apps to come out (a pretzel and an order of wings). The waitress assured us that the meals would be out shortly after the appetizers. 20 minutes later still no food. We were told it would be another 15 minutes for food. We ended up getting food 50 minutes after our appetizers. No explanation or apology from the server. We kept having to ask the hostess for an update. My wife sat outside in the grass with the baby the whole time to keep him from freaking out. I get it your new, your overwhelmed, but we were never even offered refills of our water (which were very small 8oz glasses) until after our food came out and our original waters were long gone. The refill came as a carafe. No one could have brought one over to us prior? Finally when our food came out, we were told one of our drinks would be comped. Ok thanks, but we had a bill that was nearly $200, so that was nothing. I hate reading negative reviews on Yelp and usually take them with a grain of salt. I'm trying to be really objective here, but I hope the staff and management read this and work a little harder at improving their bedside manner as they work through all their initial kinks. Beer and drink list was pretty good. Our pretzel and maple bourbon bacon wings were both good. My wife got the giant chicken sandwich which was good, but the bacon was more like a large chunk of ham and too dry to be edible on the sandwich. I had the Frenchman Burger which was good and executed as advertised, but ultimately not really how I prefer eating burgers. Both of us had truffle fries which were excellent, but could have cooked for 30 seconds longer. My mom thought the fish and chips were mediocre and over battered, but my dad enjoyed his Reuben more than expected. My daughters loved her mac and cheese, but my son's grilled cheese wasn't well cooked and the bread was far too thick. I'm not very familiar with the Berlin area, but I certainly hope they figure their service issues out and are successful. I wish we'd stuck with our original plan to go to Southington, I think it would have been a much better experience. read more

Third time here and third times the charm. Service was quick and fantastic. Amanda our waitress was a delight and tolerated my crazy family! Food was delicious. Had the fried chicken sandwich. Portions were generous. My old fashioned was made quite well. Van, the head chef came out to meet my son. Classy move! Highly recommend. read more
