So my wife made a reservation here for my 40th birthday in 2023. Specifically made a reservation for upstairs in the dining room for the "I don't give a f$@k" menu. And not even at prime time, 8pm on a Wednesday in April; (we had a stop at Violet Hour first...) but we get there and are informed that the whole floor has been closed for a private party. No notice given. So guess where we got seated? A tiny two top literally next to the front door. bad start. Menu options were dramatically limited and most of what I had wanted wasn't even an option. The only ribeye choice on the menu was $100 which even for a 28 day aged is a bit steep. If I was sitting comfortably upstairs in the booth taking in the atmosphere ok. But from the high top in the noisy bar area next to the front door?? We asked about other seating nothing available. We asked about the upstairs menu no dice. They said they'd send a complimentary appetizer. Never happened. Dinner was fine but just fine. Didn't live up to the price point and good memory I had had from prior visits. (Previously gave it four stars and it was a toss up as my #2/#3 choice in the city) They did remember it was my birthday and gave me a "special" copy of the menu that I should have had upstairs to take home. A shame I couldn't order off that menu. Food and drinks are great don't get me wrong. But at this price point you are here for near perfection and you are paying for the spectacle and ambience. And did I mention we had to pre-pay a bit of a deposit for our seats? No big deal if I had actually gotten the seats we were supposed to get. This was also my first encounter post COVID19 with the "3% service fee for our staff benefits". On top of what I recall was a pre baked 20% tip. (I could be wrong about that). I said no thanks and they dropped it. I'm not going to get into my feelings on that topic but in fairness I have noticed it is present at basically all the steakhouses now. So no points deducted for this as a result. If they had actually sent a manager out to apologize or actually comped SOMETHING I would still have been upset but more understanding and POSSIBLY it wouldn't have colored my experience so poorly that I not only down rated but now I won't go back and I won't recommend. If my wife has to make a reservation as far out as you have to for this place you should be holding yourself to them barring things out of your control. THEY CHOSE to close upstairs for a private party; their choice. I'm sure whoever they did so for must have been offering them enough money that they decided it was profitable to do so despite the cancellations and adjustments they'd have to make. Not my problem that you decided you had an opportunity to make more money at the last minute. That's not how you treat customers. read more

This place is extraordinary! The service is unbelievable. Get a reservation and expect to be seated on the 3rd floor where everything js grand and the ambiance is romantic. We started off the night with complementary drinks and chips, which were pretty good. Then we had a couple drinks and the tuna tartare. The appetizer was delicious and pretty big as well. The drinks were on point! We moved to our mains and they were extremely tasty. My bf loved the ribeye and as you can see it was huge! Let me start by saying there was some saving graces to this meal but I would never entertain coming back here for quite a few reasons. We arrived a couple minutes early to our 8:15 reservation for my birthday, they tell us a hostess will come get us at the bar area on the 3rd floor, not a problem until we had to flag down a waitress to get a drink and my fiancé and I were practically yelling at each other over the music, I like a nice vibe with music but you would think for a relatively pricey space, candle lit moody ambiance they wouldn't have it this loud. We get sat right under the speakers again we have to yell at each other to talk, my fiancé adds this would be really a huge disappointment if this was one of our first dates but we continue with our dinner. We get the beef carpaccio with is the best dish of the night by far. Definitely got us excited for the rest of the dinner. Our waiter was attentive at this time. We then move on to our main my fiancé got a ribeye and I got the surf and turf, when I tell you this is the worst steak we have both had in a nice restaurant I mean it. I hate to say that as I know cooks work extremely hard but what an incredibly disappointing entree for both of us. Mine was overcooked his was fine but the flavor was not there and it was very dry. My fiancé didn't even bother finishing his steak and this is a man who can eat let me tell you. It made me feel bad for picking the place by the end of it. On Saturday, 7/12, I visited Maple & Ash ("M&A") for my 30th birthday. I was excited to visit; I was expecting a fun birthday celebration, and, after having a baby last August, it was the first night my wife and I had been out just the two of us in several months. We fully trusted M&A would give us the night out we had been looking for. We had been to M&A three times before and had received impeccable service and outstanding food each time. Each time we had visited M&A not only did they provide professional, enthusiastic, and informative waiting service, they would also bring out menu items we hadn't ordered to complement our meal and would remove it from our bill under a line item titled "guest love". I always found this to set M&A apart, I had been introduced to their ricotta agnolotti ("Pillows of Love") through guest love, a dish I've ordered every time I've visited since. I had also been introduced to their crudo, a pasta to accompany our fire roasted seafood tower, and cake at the end of our meal, all through guest love. Each time when these items were brought out without us asking for them, our waiter would mention to us why they brought this dish out and how they thought it would best accompany the food we had ordered. This experience had always made me feel like I was on a culinary journey at M&A, I didn't know what surprise I would get to try, but I knew it would be good, and I knew I could trust there would be exceptional service from start to finish throughout the meal and it would all make me feel like a cherished and welcome guest when I visited M&A. I had a thorough, well thought out review for my criticism of our last visit and how it came nowhere close to meeting the expectations brought on by the great M&A experiences mentioned above, but it's too long for Yelp, so I must condense, please see my condensed notes below: Waiter disappeared for 15+ minutes at a time and was nowhere to be seen, not present in the seating section he was supposed to be owning. This resulted in me missing out on ordering a spinalis, a special cut they were serving that night M&A had limited supply of; supply ran out before I could place my order. There was no guest love, instead, our waiter was unenthusiastic, was reluctant to approach our table, brought out my birthday menu with a complete lack of enthusiasm, and then returned five minutes later to bring us the wrong "Happy Anniversary" menu meant for the table next to us. None of the tables in our section were receiving service, while in the other sections, wait staff and buss teams were buzzing around with smiles on their faces and enthusiasm in their voices. My wife and I could do nothing but sit back, watch, and envy those other tables. The section next to ours was waited by Brad, a waiter who had helped us just over two years ago, and who introduced us to the Pillows of Love. My wife looked at me and said "I miss having Brad as our waiter" I looked at her and said "Me too." At one point, since our waiter was missing, Brad had to step in and help serve one of the tables in our section. We were jealous, Brad is always crushing it. I wasn't going to complain, but we did have a babysitter waiting for us to return home and out waiter had again gone missing for an extended period after our meal had ended, and a manager happened to stop by. I made eye contact and asked where our waiter was, and I proceeded to voice my frustrations. I voiced my frustrations more-so on the lack of guest love rather than the general lackluster and unenthused nature of service we received that night, which I do regret. The manager was unsympathetic regarding the lack of guest love, he told us that some nights you get guest love, some nights you don't, and M&A is proud to at least serve a complimentary cocktail every time. The manager removed the celebration shots from our bill, which was nice, but I'd argue it was too little too late. I've never felt remorse when paying for M&A, as I've always been satisfied with the experience and the memories created while there. But I did feel remorse this time, the dinner just was not worth what we paid. The exceptional service is part of why you pay a higher price for a dinner at M&A, and that part of the experience was completely missing throughout the entirety of our dinner. Over the past several years, M&A has been my favorite restaurant in the city. I've recommended it to friends, family, and colleagues, I've brought extended family so they could experience it with me, and I've spread plenty of positive word of mouth validation for M&A. However, this birthday dinner makes me not want to vouch for M&A anymore. This isn't only the worst service I could've expected to receive at M&A, it's the worst service I've ever received at a high-end restaurant in any city. I would caution anyone else who is planning to celebrate at M&A as management, along with your wait staff, may determine it isn't your night to be an appreciated guest at M&A. read more

Amazing first time experience at Maple and Ash. We had the hamachi crudo and bone marrow appetizer. Seafood tower and 28 day dry aged steak as entrees and brussel sprouts and whipped potatoes side dishes. We went for the pro seafood tower which is 4 pieces of each seafood since we thought the A La, which is 1 piece, wouldn't be enough but we ended up with plenty of leftovers. It lives up to the hype and I can see why it's one of their specialities. Overall, food was good but what I would return for is the service. I wanted my birthday dinner out of town, and this was the no-brainer choice! Everything was spectacular and immaculate from beginning to end. I found them on Instagram, and had to get one of their custom menus for my birthday. I put my menu in a frame as my souvenir lol. If you are looking for a trendy and busy type of atmosphere, this is definitely it! First of all, my reservation was for 10 pm, that was the only available time they had on the weekend I would be in Chicago. I was concerned because I saw that's what time the restaurant closed. I called to be sure that my reservation was legit, and was told that Thursday and Saturday nights get a little busy and they stay open a little later to accommodate. No worries, because when I showed up at 10pm on Saturday night it was jam-packed and guests were still coming in by the groups. I noticed that they had two bars. One was downstairs when we first entered the restaurant, and another was in the dining area upstairs. There is a coat check available, which came in handy because it was a little chilly that night for us Texas people lol. From there a doorman takes you on the elevator to the hostess desk for check-in. Such a nice man, he answered all of our questions that we had. The coat-check guy was so sweet and I was thankful for his service. Once we got upstairs, the restaurant was huge! Their restroom is on the 3rd level and I was able to take the stairs to get there. On the way to the restroom, there are so many people taking pictures and hanging out, probably waiting on their table to be ready like I was. Definitely a lively restaurant. When seated after about a 5 min wait, we were offered complimentary vodka cocktails and housemade chips with dip, which included caviar. So good! I ordered the ribeye steak and it was absolutely delicious. I paired it with their mashed potatoes. I later ordered a drink from their menu, just a heads up that their cocktails are an average of $20. They are strong, and the cups are not small. They pay attention to every little detail, flip through my pics to see the straw. Yes, the simple straw that we drink out of lol. The cup and the straw were both thermos, so the drink stayed cold the entire time. All in all, this was the perfect choice for my birthday dinner. To get a custom menu, you have to make a reservation. They have so many phrases to choose from and it's complimentary. Go ahead and book a date here, you will not be disappointed. The bees were awful and made it difficult to enjoy the meal. The service was also mediocre. The waitress seemed particularly busy, so I guess she did her best. We just ordered burgers, so I'm not sure I got the full experience as reflected in other Yelp reviews (e.g., appetizers, steaks, etc). The burgers were just ok. Honestly, I'd prefer a Portillo's burger over this one. Great presentation of the burgers and fries, but again...it was just ok. I absolutely recommend Maple & Ash! Everything part of the experience was premier and top notch (maybe a few minutes from the service but that was not ruining anything at all). We ordered the whipped mashed potatoes, fire roasted chicken, and the cherry on top was the Lobster Mac & Cheese... it was to die for. If you go to Maple & Ash and are not allergic to seafood, you have to try the lobster Mac & Cheese. That is not a recommendation, that is a must. We found parking nearby (that you have to pay for) as well, so that is always a good thing. The area is a great location. I've been talking about this place at least once a week to friends and family, that is how good of an experience I had. Experience at Maple and Ash for my fiancés birthday dinner! They surprised him with the personalized menu as I requested in the reservation. Everything about this place is great start to finish. The only downside was at times the server felt a little pushy to upsell. The server greets you with a welcome cocktail which was surprisingly delicious. We each ordered a drink as well. I got the bone in filet mignon which the server recommended after I tried to order the regular filet mignon (upsell I mentioned above). It was great, so definitely worth the extra splurge. Maple & Ash is absolutely my favorite steakhouse in Chicago. I think this restaurant is really the go-to place for any special event. They truly make you feel extra special (my fiancé took me here for my birthday). It's great to have great service. Everyone else working was also equally as kind down to the bathroom attendant. The complimentary mini martini, chips with onion dip and a sprinkle of caviar, bread and butter was all very good. We got the bone marrow as an appetizer. It was good but it was heavy on the parsley topper -- if you didn't scrape a little of the parsley off, it was an overwhelming taste of parsley. The veal chop was very good -- I thoroughly enjoyed the sauce it came with. The brussel sprouts were acid-y. I liked them but if you don't like acidic tastes they might not be as good. The potatoes au gratin were also very good. For dessert, we had the chocolate cake. It was delicious but it's also hard to screw up a piece of chocolate cake. From the Lamborghinis and Corvettes and Porsches parked outside, it is widely known that this is an upscale restaurant experience. It is a multi level restaurant with the bar area on the ground floor and the main dining room on the third floor. There is an elevator. We dined on a Friday night, having made the reservation well in advance. There were many well-dressed people. We saw quite a few fit, gorgeous women in cocktail dresses and high heels. Normally steak houses are wood paneled, old school joints with gruff waiters and a no-nonsense attitude. Those places would not attract the type of clientele that Maple & Ash does. Sometimes when I see that kind of aura/ambiance I feel like the food will be a let down. Not the case here. Maple & Ash touts their IDGAF menu option (now at $200), which is essentially an Omakase-type "let them serve you whatever they want" experience. They first started us off with a French 75-type cocktail, oysters and vodka shots, and homemade crispy chips with french onion dip and caviar. Then the rolls came, warm and heavily buttered. There was a seafood tower in which the contents were swimming in a butter-heavy sauce. A salad palate cleanser, then mains of steak, fish, pasta, etc. The steak they served us, I think it might have been NY strip. It didn't feel as well-marbled as the ribeyes I'm used to. But it was still pretty good. The dessert was an impressive sundae bar with many toppings. And they also brought out a massive coconut pie that we could barely make a dent in. It is very loud in the main dining room. The crowd skews younger, and people get loud with a few drinks in them. Or maybe the influencer crowd is just naturally loud. I don't know. And the bathroom has an attendant. So be prepared for those things. Overall, it's a great experience, but certainly not cheap. They take a $300 deposit up front. It seems like the food here is more legit than like a salt bae-type restaurant. A fun time. read more

Come for the birthday menu, stay for the food! Maple & Ash is top tier, and worth every amount of hype that you've heard! I celebrated my birthday with some close girlfriends and we had a terrific time. The service was top notch, and the food and drinks didn't disappoint. I started with a cocktail, the Sugar Papi. If you love mezcal as much as I do, this is the drink for you! The flavors are impeccable and it packs a punch. While my friends enjoyed steaks and burgers, I indulged in some sushi. Sushi at a steakhouse may not be everyone's first choice, but their sushi rolls are some of my favorite in the city! The quality of the fish is incredible, and they have some unique options as well as traditional nigiri and sashimi. This spot is outrageously amazing! Everything from start to finish is an experience. Aesthetically there is a romantic, but small club vibe. Music playing, & candles lit on every table all. A++++ for the ambiance. Our waitress, Casey, was energetic, sweet and very attentive! We loved her! She greeted me with a complimentary caviar onion dip, and a cocktail for my birthday. And to top it off, a funny custom made menu. Nice twist! I brought it back home with me. This place is pricey, so come prepared to drop a little something, something. However it's not just a spot to eat- it's an experience! Let's talk about the food! Filet (16oz) bone in- B- it was dry, and the steak was cooked well done to medium rare. Not a very good jobs It didn't taste horrible, we asked for butter and it completely helped it out. The outside portion of the steak was too charcoal and I think that's what made it dry. Bone-In Rib Eye (22oz)- A+++ amazing, juicy, cooked to perfection & flavorful. Mac & Cheese is crazy good!!! Fries- On Point! Maple & Ash was fancier then I had expected but I also thought we would be sitting outside which seemed more casual. We got the scallops for a starter and they were perfect. Scallops can sometimes be rubbery but this were soft and had a great flavor. I got the surf and turf and both the steak and lobster were cooked perfectly. It came with a small side of truffle mashed potatoes which were heavenly. The broccoli side was really good. The sautéed spinach was just okay to me. The service was amazing. So...this review addition is for brunch. I had mixed feelings booking on our most recent trip because I ADORE this restaurant and didn't want it to fall short of my expectations. That being said, I think because M&A is so good, brunch created too much for them to stand up to. Let's do a run down: -Food: they have you pick an entree and then do bottomless sides (3) and buffet style sweets and sushi. The desserts I found to be dry (common for brunch desserts) and the sushi was barely filled and sloppy. Entree was delicious. Bottomless sides also dry and covered up with butter and syrup to mask it. -Drinks: not a big deal but the drink I usually get was missing it's special touch (edible glitter) and I did get the impression that drinks are where they make their money for brunch. -Vibe: weird...like, I don't want brunch to be in a barely lit room...also, extremely hectic with sabers popping champs and a million bus-boys pulling plates away and putting them down. I felt rushed and stressed. Overall, I was extremely disappointed that I spent one of the 3 meals opportunities we had on brunch. I wish I'd done the patio walk in like last time.
