I had a 60-minute massage at Mantis, and the experience was disappointing. When booking, it's unclear whether you'll get an advanced therapist or not--it's essentially a gamble. I was charged the advanced therapist rate but was surprised, as the massage felt more like it was done by a novice. I requested deep pressure and specified my problem areas, which the therapist mostly focused on, but the pressure was light to medium at best. She also spent only a few minutes on one key area I highlighted and focused more on areas I didn't mention. Overall, this place feels like a westernized, "relaxation" massage spot where you're paying for the ambiance and fluff rather than the quality of the massage. Given the prices and the way the place is marketed, I expected much more. read more

I saw Kelsey the other day for my first massage in a long while, and wow was it transformative. I'm pretty sure I ascended at one point. While she rhythmically kneaded my neck I could start to see each of my fears vividly flashing, as if they were being pulled out of me. And once she moved down my back finally, I was swept away. I really appreciated her intuitive touch and pressure; it was gentle at times, deeper where it counted, and balanced on certain parts like the quads and calves which can be very sensitive if pressed too hard. While the massage itself was great, the most memorable part was before the consultation I realized I had stepped in gum, and Kelsey offered to help scrub it for me with a spare toothbrush and oil. That was the best massage I ever had and wish I had a 2 hours for my back, because it was so good, relaxing and gave me such a great relief. Pretty bummed about my experience here today. Admittedly, my expectations were high due to all of the wonderful reviews on here. Being new to Austin I thought I had found my new go-to massage place. I spent the time reading through all the therapists 'about me's' and ultimately went with the advanced therapist, Syd since she specializes in TMJ pain. The next available appointment was a week out at 7:30a on a Saturday (a little earlier than I would like, but since I was desperate for some relief I booked it and anxiously awaited my appointment all week). I arrived at the salon which appeared dark at 7:28a and texted the phone number on door to let them know I had arrived. There is a sign on the door saying they keep the salon locked for safety and the confirmation text the night before says the same and to text when you arrive. I waited until 7:35a for a response, but since I didn't receive a reply back I decided to try the door. It was open but all the lights were off. Syd looked unamused and honestly seemed pretty annoyed by my presence which I didn't take personally since it was so early and I don't expect stellar customer service. I didn't want her to think I was late or didn't respect her time so I let her know that I had texted and had been outside. She replied that I should have tried the door, fair, but there are multiple signs saying the door is kept locked and to text - and all the lights were off! She had me fill out the forms and showed me into the room to lay down. The massage didn't start until 7:45-7:50a. The massage itself was really good and she knows what she's doing but every minute counts when you're in pain. The massage ended right at 8:30a. I paid for a 60 min but in reality only received a 50 minute. Again, I didn't take it personally and assumed she probably had another massage right after me. I got dressed and went out to pay and it wasn't until we stood there talking about exercises I could do at home for 10 mins that I realized she wasn't in a rush at all. I thought about it more on the drive home and think it's pretty unprofessional to finish a massage early, especially when I was on time, followed their instructions to a tee, and never received a text back. This is a no tipping salon and I can't help but think that the service would have been better if there was a tipping option. Sadly, my search continues. I think it's still a great place to try, but I would probably recommend the South Congress location as that's where all the rave reviews are coming from. read more

Kelsey does an excellent job at making me feel comfortable and welcomed. She is a wonderful massage therapist. First-time patron: I have had several professional massages, and I must compliment Julia (and, presumably, the other staff) there on their present mind and attention to the reaction of their customers. I didn't have to guide her on anything; the pressure was perfect, the temperature in the room was great, the music was soothing, the lights were low. The most impressive part of the massage though was she wasn't in a rush to work out my knots. I have a very physical job, and having a massage is very physical. Julia's approach was gentle, strong, and efficient. I always appreciate focus over force [perhaps that's the outcome of having an woman-owned massage practice? ;)]. Also, one of the only customer-facing businesses I've seen care deeply about COVID safety outside of just 'wear a mask'. You wait outside until they call you in, wash your hands and fill out a couple of forms before you get to tell your masseuse what you're looking for that day. I've had chronic shoulder pain for a few years and some neck and head tension. I started seeing a chiropractor regularly about 2 months ago and they said things were progressing slower in my shoulder than they hoped. They recommended getting a massage to work on the muscle tissue - so my boyfriend booked me a massage with Hilary. Not only did I feel great with almost no pain afterward, a few days later my chiropractor was able to adjust my neck in a way that never worked before because my muscles were so relaxed. I will definitely be booking another appointment - Hilary was really sweet and had great music playing. Highly recommend! read more

Best massage I've ever had! Janice (Ja nees) was amazing. She was kind, professional, and focused on areas where I had the most tension. She used a mixture of Swedish/thai/trigger point massage while using passive ROM to release my tension. The facility is clean with the smell of aromatherapy when you walk in. There are two restrooms near the front desk. The massage table is heated and the blankets and sheets are nice and soft. I wish I could teleport this place to the Bay Area because I would definitely been a regular if I lived in Austin. I feel so relaxed with significantly less tension after leaving this place! The massage was $125 for one hour. It's a tipless establishment so I wasn't able to tip, but I will definitely come back next time I visit Austin. Thanks so much Janice! read more
