This place has been a staple for the local Filipino American community for several years. It has moved twice at least, and it has been at its current location for a few years now. The management is very friendly and extremely helpful. Always a good place to grab your Filipino food, spice or snacks when you are in the area. Parking is plentiful. Because most, if not all, items are from the Philippines or other parts of Asia, the prices are bit higher than domestic versions. And it always seems crowded in the cafeteria section of the store during the weekends. Always a homestyle comfort, but not always consistent with the quality. My friends were looking for a spot to go that we have never been to. I found this place and a lot of people have been talking about it and let me tell you, this is the spot to go to. This is the first time I've had filipino food and it was AMAZING! When you first walk in, it is - as the name suggests - a market. There are a whole ton of filipino goods from ube pandesal to mango drinks and so much more! The hot food is through the entryway on the right and it is a cute bar where someone serves you! Everything was so flavorful at such a great price. I had the combo with pancit, lechon, and barbecue. The lechon was crispy and juicy and came with a sauce that was a but sweet and sour. Words cannot describe the flavor this lechon was providing. Then, I took a bite out of the barbecue and the meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It reminded me of cha shiu from the chinese butchers. The pancit was a nice base and had good flavor. All together this meal knocked it out of the park and I thought about going again the next day haha! read more

This place has a market on one side and a kitchen on the other. They have a lot of dishes and the prices are not that bad. I got the sausage and lumpia and both were ok. The pancit was also on that quality level too. They have a $5 minimum for card use which could be a problem since they have low prices. Decent mom&pops spot where the food is cooked, placed on warmers for you to choose your combination plate. Prices are reasonable to the quality of the food and the portions the provide. It's just a bit tricky because the selection isn't that wide and not everything is included and you have to pay extra. No fancy decor which is fine because it's a fast food type of place. We went when they were closing but they packed up all their remaining BBQ skewers (pork and chicken), longanisa (cute lil delicious sausages), and a small order of Laing (taro leaves braised in coconut milk). Skewers were amazing, despite being the end of the day. I can only imagine how they tasted when they came out fresh. Longanisa was great. Laing... Wow! Earthy, sweet, creamy, it's everything you could ask for in an unhealthy veggie dish. Really truly delicious. Can't wait to come back when it's NOT closing time and try some more variety. read more

Whenever I'm in the Springfield neighborhood, I always look up Manila Oriental Market, aka MOM, to see how far I am. It would be a shame to only be a few minutes drive from MOM and not pick up some lechon, longanisa, or some other delicious meated entrée. Their food when paired with rice is just so homey and warm, the perfect meal for a cold day and you're not quite wanting soup, but just something to warm you up. While I'm not Filipino myself, it has been thoroughly vouched for and verified ($8 Twitter style) by subject matter experts who have a thorough understanding of what it means to be an authentic Filipino joint. A bonus is that the MOM is literally a market, and you can shop for some exclusive Filipino goods while you pick up some food to go. So I just happened to find this place while trying to eat in Springfield and wanted to check it out since there isn't many "good" Filipino food places where I live. There is a small market area selling Filipino groceries and the other side is where they serve the Filipino food. To my surprise they had some of my favorites like Sinigang, Lechon, Pancit, Bangus, Longonisa, etc. They all tasted really great especially the Lechon! the halo halo was good as well. I think the Turon can be sweeter. I liked it so much I even catered from them for my sons bday party. My in-laws who happened to be Filipino were visiting from Cali and they are very critical towards Filipino food but even they were impressed. Thats why I'm giving them a 5/5 cause they know how to cook Filipino cuisine! read more

This is a small grocery store with lots of specialty Filipino items and a cafe serving Filipino food. A friend suggested this place. Found it on Yelp with only 4 reviews with an average of  3.25 stars within the last 12 months. This was our first visit and we hoped for the best.    The grocery store had fresh produce, pastries, sauces, seasonings, snacks, frozen products, refrigerated products, noodles, rice, etc. All tailored to help you make your favorite Filipino food. My wife and I bought yellow bean cakes, Crema de Ube, Suman sa Ligia and frozen Manila's Ihawan steamed pork buns. The yellow bean cakes tasted just like the chinese version with the same name. The filling was mildly sweet with a ground bean texture. The crust was flakely with a waxy texture on the surface. It was good tasting to me only because I grew up eating food like this. My wife thought it was OK.    The Crema de Ube was Ube in mashed potato form with milk, egg, butter and a small amount of sugar. If you love Ube, this is for you.    The Suman sa Ligia was sweet rice with a tiny amount of sugar wrapped in a banana leaf. Tasted like plain sweet rice. The surface areas that were green, had a hint of smokiness from the leaf. We've had better versions of sweet rice wrapped in banana leaves.    The Manila's Ihawan steamed pork buns were soft and slightly sweet with a taste of powdered milk. The addition of powdered milk in a pork bun dough makes it much more tastier than not adding it. The filling was minced pork with a slightly sweet oyster sauce flavor. This was very good in flavor and texture.    The cafe had ready-made food in warming pans like a buffet table. So this rating is based on a comparison of buffet like food, not made-to-order food. We've had the privilege of eating great Filipino food at friend's and relative's homes. They were born in the Philippines and one relative was a chef. So, our standards are a little high. We ordered tungi tungi and 2 combination platters. Each platter came with white rice and 3 choices.    The tungi tungi was chewy and not crispy. It was pretty dense, plain and not sweet except for a light amount of caramel on the outside. It tasted like a plain sweet rice dough, no powdered milk or coconut milk. This should be eaten immediately after it is made, while it is crispy. They really shouldn't sell this.    Our platters had chicken curry, pancit, lumpia, barbeque pork and longganisa. The chicken curry had white meat that was tender and only slightly dry. The sauce was made with a mildly spicy yellow curry. The curry was thick, but there was some oil that was separated from the sauce. It would probably help the flavor if the oil could be blended into the sauce. Overall, it was OK.    The pancit vegetables and noodles were cooked right, but the sauce was missing some flavor. There was no noticeable sesame oil, or chicken broth. The liquid seasoning was a little weak. Overall, it wasn't the worst we've had. Let's call it so-so, needs improvement.    The lumpia was crispy with a good tasting wrap. The filling was finely shredded vegetables that were seasoned decently. We got 3 pieces and the size was larger than some other places. Overall, it was good.    The barbeque pork was tender and grilled just right. It had a great combination of flavors from the charring, the pork and the sweet marinade. This was excellent and easily the best dish here.    The longganisa was a sweet pork sausage. We got 3 pieces. It was encased and oily on the outside. It was sweet with a good fried flavor and a balanced amount of seasoning. Overall, it was good because I love chinese sausage and this was similiar.    The store and cafe are old looking and in need of renovation. The restroom was also dated, but relatively clean. The service was quick in both areas. There was plenty of space in the cafe for ordering, but only 4 tables for dine-in. Many tables were not allowed to be used. The grocery store checkout area was too small for covid spacing because people were entering, looking at food items, waiting in line, checking out and leaving in one area. There was a lot of people traffic in that one modest size area. It cleared out pretty quickly though. We would definitely come back to this place for specialty items and meals. read more

I love this place when I just want to pick up quick Filipino food for dinner. They have various dishes that are available there and you can just point out what you want. I recommend sausages, sisig and beef stew. I always get a big jar of ube (purple yam) ice cream as well. They have ready-made foods to-go, such as beef and chicken empanadas, dinner rolls, desserts, etc., as well as a selection of grocery items and produce. On the other side is a hot food bar with combos and platters. But, forget about everything else! If you're in the know, you know that this is THE place to get some halo-halo, a Filipino shaved ice dessert with evaporated milk, sweet beans, tubers, coconut, sago, and gulaman. Think of falooda or che, but so much better! You can opt for a scoop of ube ice cream, which I highly recommend! The dessert comes in a cup, and it is not overly sweet, refreshing, creamy from the milk and the ice cream, and yummy with the various beans and jelly-like colorful bits floating around within. Just note that you pay everything up at the front in the market side, but you can bring all your items back and enjoy in the cafe section. Extra star for the kare kare! Like a typical Filipino mother, my husband's mom sent him home with a Tupperware container of oxtail stew (aka: kare kare) for me to eat since I was unable to visit them that weekend. I've had a not-so-great experience with the hot food bar at Manila Oriental before, but this was effing fantastic. Kare Kare is not an easy dish to create and is often ruined due to impatience since you need to slow cook the meat, skim the fat, and other un-fun stuff. This one was chock full of creamy peanut sauce, fresh veggies, and super tender meat. It's super legit and even features tripe (I ate around it as I have been doing since I was a child). Even though this is my favorite Filipino dish, I have not attempted to create this at home because 1) oxtail is expensive and 2) nobody has time for that. I got to give props where credit is due because this was just as good as Nanay's. Plus - - take out bagoong. It doesn't get much better than that! read more

Manila Oriental has built a solid reputation and avid following by the Northern Virginia Filipino community for years. They finally outgrew their previous location and moved into Springfield to meet demand. Problem is, they have become so popular that they may have to expand again soon. If you come on the weekends, the place is usually packed and you might have to wait to find a seat. The hot food is the draw. They serve the best Filipino food on this side of the Potomac except for the kind cooked by Lola and Nanay (Grandma and Mom) at home. They are still your best bet for great Philippine cuisine in northern Virginia. Half of the business is grocery, the other half is the eatery. The same owners from the Bailey's Crossroads location are here and they have always been some of the best people you ever want to meet. If you come from California or New York, you might thumb your nose at their offerings, but if you are in Virginia and need your Filipino fix, Manila Oriental is as good as it gets. read more

Customer Service: Nice but a bit pushy especially to those who are unfamiliar with the process. Need a bit improvement. Store My major complaint is the bakery left out. This was my 1st time having Filipino food in a restaurant. I'm giving it 3 stars for food but 5 stars for service! When we arrived they could tell by our faces we had no idea what to get or what the food was. The woman stopped what she was doing and explained every item, offered samples, and suggestions. I enjoyed my food (the chicken) but my friend did not enjoy his meal. Everything was prepared perfectly but the seasoning was not for him. The portion size was good and the inexpensiveness was even better :)! As noted the food eating section is very small and VERY packed! Luckily we were able to get a seat. Other patrons had to stand while enjoying their meal. After eating we walked around the store and once again someone tried to help us decide what treats to buy. My review isn't that great bc I really don't know this type of food so I can't make comparisons on how I think it should taste, but if you like experimenting I would def give it a try. I haven't had authentic Filipino food for a while since I had lived in Vienna, Austria for the last two years. They're about as common out there as Austrian restaurants are in Arizona. Anyway, here in Northern Virginia/Washington DC, there is a substantial Filipino population, and this place did not disappoint. My first time here, I had some crispy pork (lechon), some "dinuguan" (pork blood stew), and a large heap of white rice to compliment these dishes. One morning for breakfast, I had "longsilog" (longanisa sausage, which is like a sweet/savory fried sausage, scrambled eggs, and garlic fried rice), which was so good. And today, before leaving Virginia to fly back out West, I tried the pork "pata" adobo (made with pork hocks), and a side order of sinigang soup (Filipino hot and sour soup with meat and veggies). It's just heaven. The dishes may vary from day to day, and what might be available one afternoon may not be available the next. So that's why I had to knock it down one star, to be absolutely fair about it. But the food is excellent and the service is friendly. read more
