I have been coming to this store for forever. They sell so many differemt types of healthy drink options hete. Ever since I stopped drinking soda, I've been shoppimg here for Pelligrino water. Unfortunately they only sell this in 8 packs or full cases, and it would be nice to someday be able to ourchase single bottles of this stuff. They often have sales for other types of drinks also if you buy two or more, like Vitamin Water, O ther things that I frequently purchase are their very affordable 12" sub sandwiches. I isially get either tuna, Italian, or turkey. These are quite good and for sire healthier than fast food. i have notoced that a couple of theor other items like Nitrigrain bars are more expensive than other grocery stores. read more

SERVICE: 1. When the app made a mistake and did not take into my clicked coupons, I went to the customer service desk. Saturday afternoon. 2. No one there. A couple of people said a manager would be with me shortly. 3. After 20 minutes or so and after a line formed behind me, I asked if anyone was indeed coming. 4. I got scolded for being so impatient and yelled at because they were very busy. 5. When someone did come, thought my problem was too large, so took care of other people's problems first. Then no apologies, no nothing. I understand they're busy. But as a senior citizen and the problem was not my fault, I didn't deserve to be treated rudely and talked down to. I wasted more than a half hour or more, standing beside a personless counter for a grand sum total of $6.30...their hourly wages come to more than that; they should at least have acknowledged that I was the one inconvenienced and not them. If it weren't for the principle, I would have said, to hell with it and left. 6. Now I remember why I stopped shopping there a few years ago (they lured me in with some sale items this time, but no more). read more

Wasted potential. One of the few 24/7 grocery stores but it's substandard and doesn't feel safe. Homeless people constantly in the entrance area. Security gates just cause a downward spiral since people who pay for things don't want to deal or see things like that. Understaffed where I've seen one cashier at night with self-checkout down and a 30 minute line of people waiting to be checked out. It's just a bad location and probably not fixable. read more

I am typing this to express my deep disappointment and frustration with the unprofessional conduct exhibited by your cashier Edith at the Safeway located at 1855 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington D.C. on the early morning of July 2, 2024. At approximately 2:20 am, while attempting to complete my light grocery shopping, I was disturbed by a slight foul odor in the vicinity of the cashier's area, which stop me from shopping and led me to urgently seek access to the restroom. Recalling a previous unpleasant experience in this store's restroom, I made a point to acquire some Dude Wipes beforehand. However, upon securing the required items, I was dismayed to find that all the self-checkout lanes were inexplicably closed, leaving only a single cashier lane operational. The queue was longer than expected, the slight stench lingered, and I was forced to endure an uncomfortable wait while desperately in need of restroom. While in line someone else who know the staff went in the bathroom. I asked the cashier Edith (The extremely obese lighter black woman) If the other bathroom was open? She told me "They don't want anybody going back there at night" I asked her again is the other bathroom open she said no. So I paid for my wipes and patiently waited for the restroom to be open. After some time waiting I hear some type of show playing coming from inside the restroom. I knock to let the guy know I'm waiting. Meanwhile Edith saw me waiting and pacing back and forth instead of her tell me the other one is open she just watch me while in discomfort. It was only through the intervention of a kind-hearted older black woman staffer that I learned the other restroom was accessible. Subsequently, upon returning from the restroom, I discovered that the self-checkout lanes had magically reopened and Edith was conspicuously not the cashier anymore. The situation further deteriorated when I was falsely accused by Edith of taking photos of her, followed by her openly expressing "She hates this store" to a colleague. The lack of empathy, professionalism, and basic courtesy exhibited by Edith throughout this ordeal was deeply unsettling. Had it not been for the intervention of the aforementioned older black woman staff member I would have had an accident on myself because of Edith lack of compassion for a human in need I would have been forced to sued Safeway for Emotional Destress, Duty of Care, Breach of Duty, Causation, and more damages! read more

6/18/22 Last week I came here with my dad. This is now the only Safeway close to my dad's house. A staff member being lazy and/or untrained told my dad to "go to customer service to get fish orders." I wasn't there for this I interaction because I was on another assignment in the store. Still the staffs I saw looked like they wanted to be elsewhere. Today was the first time that I had ever come to this location, and I honestly found it just driving by. I knew that I needed to pick-up couple of things to hold me over for the next couple of days. I needed a half gallon of whole milk, some orange juice, and whole wheat bread. While I was strolling through the produce section, I also got bananas, 6 apples, and spring mix salad. Further in down, I found the Chi Chi's style salsa which U could use for some tortilla chips that I have at home. I couldn't forget a couple of containers of Maruchen noodles, both beef and shrimp flavors. Then finally, I got a box of Kellogg's raisin bran cereal, which I will definitely need starting tomorrow. This is a filthy and stinking store. Many of the shelves are only partially stocked. The pharmacy closes for lunch! There are uniformed police on duty inside. Trash. That's the only way to describe the store. And Criminal - for the staff and what they do there. The location is disgusting, the food is often rotten and contaminated, there are rats and mice all over and expired products being sold. The staff are the most unprofessional workers and scummy people you will find. They are extremely nasty, hateful and aggressive, even without any provocation. There was recently skimmers found at this location which the staff tried to hide. I spend at least $400 every other week at this specific Safeway. I live right up the street and have been living here for about 4 years. I usually go from Whole Foods to Trader Joe's to Safeway. Every time I'm in Safeway, I'm being stalked by the security guard or somebody else. I average 194k a year. What do I look like throwing my life away over groceries? Outside of that when this day, I asked if I was able to handover my phone so I could charge it to call an Uber once i was done grocery shopping and was being denied. I had over $300 worth of things in my cart and was in the middle of shopping once my phone died. I know two of the GMs there and neither were the ones that I was being denied from and i know me giving my phone to them wouldn't have been a problem. I'm not trying to feel entitled but I had no way to get home and had to walk uphill to the top of Wisconsin for 1 mile. And yes, I did take a shopping cart because as I said before I had at least $200 worth of groceries from the other stores. Today will be the last time I shop at the store. read more

The Drive up and Go service at this store is unbelievably DISAPPOINTING and UNPROFESSIONAL!!! After waiting in the parking spot as directed for my groceries and repeatedly calling the number advertised for help with NO RESPONSE, I decide to call another customer service number. Customer service offers to call the store for me, and tells me that someone will be right with me. After 15 more minutes of waiting in the car, I decide to go into the store to see the manager. The manager appears to be more annoyed than I am. Come on people, IM THE CUSTOMER. No apology IS OFFERED. As a matter of fact, I feel like I am inconveniencing her. I have personally observed and experienced discriminatory treatment of black customers, specifically black male customers, but black female employees. It's a phenomenon that's unfortunately endemic to the black community. Case and point, I went in the store today and stood behind a white couple that was given royal treatment by the black female cashier. She greeted them with a pleasant, "Hi, how are you?" and concluded their purchase with, "Have a great day sir." However, as soon as I walked up, she just said, "You need a bag" with an attitude. Plain and simple. So, I asked her, "Are you not going to also ask me how my day was" to which she rudely said, "I'm looking at you like you're crazy. But, how was your day?" I expressed my dissatisfaction and disappointment with her behavior and attitude which prompted her to walk off the register and abandon it. Can you believe it?!? A male manager walked over and completed my purchase. I expressed to him a few moments later what I'm typing here. It's a shame that black people treat other black people this way. But, it's not an isolated incident. I believe better training can prevent these discrepancies and help EVERY customer feel welcomed and respected, not just the ones with the WHITE, I mean, RIGHT skin color. read more

Ordered online to pick up. Debacle. I couldn't message anyone when I arrived, so tried the phone number. It wasn't set up. So I went upstairs and asked where the pickup station was. They point to a black door. I opened it and was yelled at by the person inside. 10 minutes later, I knocked on the door again and was greeted with " I told you I would be out in a minute" in a harsh tone. I have never seen such belligerent behavior towards customers. This store has not improved the customer experience in 10 years. I'm not going back. Bait & Switch? Today I visited this Safeway (2912) and was dismayed to see that, despite a just4u offering of Planters 33-34 oz. Mixed Nuts at $9.99, there were none to be found. The same thing happened 10 days earlier. There were no shelf slots for the Planters nuts, only for 36 oz. containers of Safeway Mixed Nuts now on "sale" for $14.99. Today, there was even an aisle mountain of the 36 oz Safeway Mixed Nut containers at $14.99. Also, 5 oz. Signature Farms Bag Salad was offered at a just4u discount. None to be found - only a wall FULL of a commercial brand (Fresh Express). There were no slots visible for any Signature Farms Bag Salad products. I showed a produce clerk my printed just4u shopping list and asked him to show me where I could find the Signature Farms salads but he just pointed to the wall and said, "over there." I again asked him to show me, but he wouldn't budge. He just said, "We're out of them." Before leaving, I spoke with a Customer Service clerk who seemed indifferent to my complaints and did not offer to make any apology or substitutions. She said she has never heard of the term, "bait & switch." I am alarmed at the attitude of this store's personnel concerning expensive items being switched for "unavailable" advertised just4u items. Supply chain issues aside, there should at least have been an apology given and/or an offer to substitute a similar item with the same discount. just4u is apparently not4me. read more

Eh, this used to be my go-to even with the advent of Trader Joe's just due to its 24-hour nature and its larger size. Not gonna lie, I definitely notice some price gouging even compared to other DMV Safeways, maybe from its monopoly of the only real grocery option for Georgetown. But that I can live with. For now though, I've given it about a solid month in a post-COVID pandemic world, and right now it's struggling to keep up supply. Toilet paper disappearing is a given, but pretty much every panic item is persistently out of stock. Chicken and eggs I get, but frozen veggies, fried chicken, and ice cream have been gone for a while. The pasta situation is a little better now, but I remember that being gone for a couple weeks. And the vegetable quality has been pretty bad last 3-4 visits I don't really have a beef when it comes to service, but I thought this place wouldn't be nearly as affected as it apparently is. read more

I go to Safeway once a week on Monday for two things, their store brand ground beef who's packaging is 2-3 pounds and costs $3.99 and their fried chicken (on mondays they advertise a deal on chicken $2 off original price and call it cheep chicken mondays). When I went to Safeway earlier today they didn't have the ground beef in the 2-3 pound packaging I wanted. They had a spot and sign for it but it was empty. Meanwhile they do have a spot just above it for their store brand ground beef same exact type only difference is it's in a smaller 1 pound packaging and costs 50 cents more per pound. Don't understand why they can do the 1 pounder that's more expensive but not the 2-3 pound package that's 3.99 when it's the exact same type of meat (it's not because everyone bought it, I went there yesterday to get some milk because I was out and saw this then as well) As for their cheep chicken Monday deal, I go there every Monday to buy their 8 piece mixed fried chicken for $6.99 but today they were out. Whenever I went before they either had it or had a cook making a new batch. Today they told me they weren't selling it because they had no cook to cook the chicken. I don't understand how store can advertise cheep chicken mondays and not have a cook to cook the chicken. Did all their cooks quit or something? read more

This used to have the nickname of "Social Safeway" because of all the well connected elbows that would rub there. I have been shopping at this location for 35 years. I shopped at it before the new building was built, I came back once the new building was done, I shopped at it through the constant renovation of the new building, I put up with everything getting moved all over the store and signage being completely wrong. I thought we had reached the end with the official grand opening a few months ago, but no. Today, I discovered a new prison compound look. Fences and gates have been put up inside the store that trap you in, unless you go past a register or have a receipt to scan. I did break out with the help of an employee that I recognize from years there...though we did set off the security system in the process. Sadly, this is not the "Anti Social Safeway" and I left it for the last time today...taking my business to Harris Teeter instead. Time to try the new Giant just two minutes up the road from Safeway, there is also a great new Wegman's just past the Giant, and I still love the Whole Foods three blocks from Safeway who also uses a gate to get out...but at least doesn't make me scan my groceries as I can just put them in my shoulder bag and walk out with their cutting edge technology. Sorry Safeway and the entire Albertson's family of stores, its not you, its me...I have self respect and will take my shopping elsewhere. I have to do pick up because of health reasons and I would suggestion avoiding this Safeway at all costs. It is so poorly managed. They changed the number to call when you arrive to let the people know you are here... yet they didn't update ANY of the signs so you just get a full mailbox. Try to ignore the unacceptable first impression from awful potholes at the upper level entrance ramp which seems to mess up a number of older weaker customers trying to navigate their carts across the walkway and the wheels get stuck and the jolt sends items flying out of their carts. (Hey Safeway-this is Georgetown -- fix your concrete so people can come and go smoothly!) Points off rating because it you don't maintain property in plain sight...what else may need maintenance? Ok that said, this place has a great wine department, decent cheese selection, meats and seafood. Fresh fruits and vegetables vary in quality. This is a pretty big store so they will likely have most of what you need. They have a coin star and Redbox near the checkout. Twenty three hours and fifteen minutes. The social Safeway in Georgetown apparently can't tell time. My friend and I decided to have a fun outing and we rented Lime Bikes and rode over to Wisconsin Ave to spend some time with the night owls. I double checked the arrival time, it was the stroke of midnight on Wed. Aug 3. When we entered the escalator was out of commission, fortunately the elevator got us up. Then it happened. My friend half seriously told me it was his fault. He was being profiled and observed. Funny, I was with him and they ignored me. Sorry but I digress. This isn't about that kind of stupidity. Just as we got to the meat section it happen. In an instant at 12:48 am Safeway made an announcement that all shoppers had 12 minutes to check out and leave. The store advertised as 24 hour was closing for 45 minutes at 1 am and we had to leave. No explanation given. There was no sign at the entrance notifying people. Wouldn't you think they would make that announcement like every ten minutes and not surprise their customers a whole 12 minutes before having to vacate the premises. I won't pretend to know anything about operating a grocery store. Far be it from me to be snarky and comment on where they had their head. But I am pretty good at spotting bad decisions being made, customers disrespected, inconvenienced big time, and exaggeration of store hours not to mention the waste of money spent on transportation. Let's be real. This was a lousy way to treat customers but lousy service and flat out mistreatment is what you get with to little competition. No explanation was given for the closure. Nobody was eating as far as I could see. Some of the employees were outside have a good tic toc time. That must be it. It was a tic toc break. Hey, on a totally different subject... Updating my previous 2 reviews. Someone appears to have taken matters in hand regarding masks and most employees were wearing what appeared to be good masks when I visited here for a quick shopping trip a few days ago. I still saw the occasional employee not taking it seriously and walking around with their noses sticking out above the mask but overall it was about as good as one might reasonably expect. I believe 100% mask-wearing is not a dream, I often wear a mask the entire time while walking anywhere from 6 to 8 miles, so I don't understand why people walking in a store can't keep them over their nose and mouth, but what I saw the other day was a tremendous improvement and I feel I can recommend you shop here as long as you take the ordinary precautions as you would in any inside shop these days. The selections here remain good, there's TP, paper towels, hand sanitizer and all kinds of food, for example mushrooms were plentiful which is great as my local Trader Joes ran out last time I was there. read more

I'm new to DC and was thrilled that I had a large supermarket so near my apartment! However, I soon found the customer service to be incredibly lacking (no greeting, associates rarely had answers to my questions, etc.), the organization of the products confusing, and overall products disappointing and oftentimes EXPIRED. I purchased ten yogurts last week, assuming they were all fresh, and upon returning home found all had expired THREE WEEKS EARLIER. I purchased a rice mix for dinner and found it best by APRIL 2016! It was during this purchase (Aug. 21, 2017) that the cashier not only didn't greet me, he continued speaking to a peer, seemingly ignoring my presence, never read my total, and only said goodbye after I'd said goodbye. Bought so called fresh USA origin tuna at the fish section. Was inedible, tasted like cardboard. What a lie.

The store is just finishing a major remodel, but it never closed so it was like shopping in a construction zone. I never saw it pre-remodel, so can't say what is different, but it is very nice. The dining area is still closed but other than that everything seems mostly back to normal. It is on the 2nd floor and there is an up escalator, stairs, and an elevator. no down escalator. So if you can't walk down stairs you need to take the elevator. The elevator has like 80% of the lights burned out. I didn't realize this until I was leaving so I didn't tell anyone, so I don't know if they are aware of this, for all I know employees may never take the elevator. The parking is on ground level. Great store, great selection, great layout, wide aisles, large wine and beer selection which is a novelty for us Marylanders. Huge prepared foods section, not cheap, but extensive. read more

In my 30 plus years of living on this earth I don't think I've ever been afraid of going to a grocery store for fear of getting yelled at. The employees here are so rude. Just last week I was laughing with friends visiting from Florida about the awful customer service experience they had. The Publix employees treat you like royalty compare to the employees at this place. Here they yell at you and the ones you find on the floor will bark at you if you dare ask where an item is. You're better of wandering the store looking for what you need. My advice is to try and avoid all contact with the employees. Better yet head to the Safeway in Adams Morgan or the Dupont Circle one. I actually dig this Safeway! Situated off of Wisconsin, this large and spacious grocery store offers a large selection of hot and ready-made foods, in addition to a large grocery section. I am a huge fan of their 'Fast-Baked Pizza' section, located in the 'Fresh Food/Ready Meals/Ready-to-Go' section - offerings include: Margherita (with mozzarella fresca, tomato sauce, basil, and olive oil), Veggie (mozzarella, tomato sauce, onion, peppers, feta, mushrooms, and olives), Black Forest (mozzarella, onion, black forest ham, scallion mayonnaise, goat cheese, and spicy apricot sauce), Jerk Spiced Chicken (cheddar, chicken, onion, peppers, cilantro, jerk mayonnaise, and arugula), Korean Spiced (roast pork, cheddar, kimchi, scrambled egg, Korean mayonnaise, and cilantro), Pesto (mozzarella, pesto sauce, cherry tomatoes, and Parmesan), and Meat Lovers (mozzarella, soppressata, sausage, bacon, and Parmesan). You can also custom build-your-own with their variety of toppings. I am currently OBSESSED with their Korean Spiced pizza - no need for the scrambled egg, the roast pork, and the cilantro - the kimchi is beautifully well-fermented and super tasty, and the sauce that they use has a nice kick to it. I'v ealso tried the Black Forest, and I enjoyed the combination of the goat cheese and the spicy apricot sauce. The crust is similar to a brick-oven style, and I liked that it was thin. More fresh organic produce than any store in the city. Open 24 hours a day. So sayeth the manager. The gelato bar, the sushi bar, the nut bar... all new since the renovations. Fresh made pralinated nuts from the nut bar. Make your own organic nut butter from 7 varieties of peanuts (you can even make chocolate peanut butter). Wine tastings to come... Social Safeway ain't what it used to be. :) Oh - and it's now surrounded by a new Starbucks, and a Bergmanns dry cleaner (but I hear they'll come to your house and pick up your laundry or dry cleaning, which makes them awesome).
