I'm currently on a spiritual quest to find the best grocery store rotisserie chicken in the world, which I have dubbed "Chicken Wars." Next up is Giant Food, and a whole tissi ran $6.99. It ended up landing at 6.8/10, which currently ranks it 30th out of 40 grocery store birds I've currently tried. I'm working on a website for the rankings to live, so stay tuned on that. LOVE YALL! Very clean but the outside can be quite sketchy and the staff is mostly pretty rude. It is the closest grocery store to Shaw-Mt Vernon.

This is my neighborhood Giant. I don't have a lot of complaints about the store. It's never too busy. There's a parking garage where that's free for 2 hours with a validated ticket from Giant. There's always plenty of options to choose from. Fantastic customer service as well. I love the produce here. Fresh fruits and veggies all the time. The bakery is phenomenal. I always get cakes for birthdays here and everyone loves them! They have a large selection of natural/healthy foods, vegan options, Asian and Mexican cuisines. They have it all! Great stop for everything really minus the cat pet supplies but I really can't complain. They have the basics. read more

Surprise! More sucking from the most ignorant store on the planet. I place order #m523011499 for pick up and received 2 text messages that you were working on my order. I show up after hitting "I have arrived" and the woman starts to give me someone else's groceries. I tell her I only ordered one thing and she says there are no other orders. I show her the email and she THEN checks the system to find that my order was cancelled. No notification, call, email....nothing. Waste of time and effort. You guys are VERY good at wasting people's time, effort, and money. No wonder your business is not doing so well. You can blame it on theft but the stupid and ignorant within the store plays a HUGE factor there....YOU SUCK!!!! read more

I'm only leaving a review for the bakery department . Whoever that old man manager is , he's a miserable human being . I purposely avoid the bakery because of him . And I'm not the only one who feels this way . He treats his employees like crap , and the customers even worse . He is not an asset to your company . I'm pretty sure your union but he needs to retire like yesterday . You are losing money at the bakery because of him . read more

We are often here to buy fresh veggies, shrimp and chicken. Sometimes end up buying ice creams from their large collection of various brands. Vegetables are always of very high quality. Never had any complaints with anything we have ever bought. Only thing they don't have is the Thai green chilies. I have to Patel Brothers to buy them. Otherwise they are stacked with all different varieties of vegetables. Meat section is pretty amazing as well. Do check out they offers. They have some great offers going on throughout the year. We like their pack of chicken legs. It's usually on sale. Also, shrimp is pretty good. Feels fresh to us as we use it to cook Jambalaya or shrimp & cocktails. Never felt foul smell. They have validated parking just opposite to their store. So bring your parking ticket along with you and get it validated after you finish shopping. They also accept plastic bags. They have a drop off bin in the front so that you can drop off your excess plastic bags. read more

I like the new manager they have there. (December 2023) when I shop at this job I'll get out of produce that I need.

"Treat others the way you want to be treated". It was around 12:30pm and I was doing an Instacart order and this lady named Barbara was helping me at the checkout. Wasn't sure if she had a bad day looking at her nasty, angry look, but already she was having an attitude with me while loading items up for her to scan(I had a lot). I told her I had 2 different orders and to please bear with me but she looked like she wasn't having it and was demanding and rushing me to finish loading up the items for her to scan. We did argue a little at some point because she was criticizing my work, and I tried to end the argument by staying silent and even asking her politely to please stop arguing with me but she kept it going. I asked if I offended her but she probably didn't listen. Don't want to play the race card but at one point I really thought she had a problem with Latinos(I'm Mexican). Despite on her disrespect, talking behind my back, demanding and rushing me and making me look like a bad person in front of another customer, I still helped her putting my items in my shopping cart and did my very best to remain calm(it was really hard). I could've been rude and disrespectful right back but I know that would just escalate things and she was an elder lady(I respect my elders). I'm just glad I left out of there because I couldn't stand her anymore. If any Giant manager Is reading this, please talk to her and tell her that her behavior was both UNPROFESSIONAL and DISRESPECTFUL. *If you read this review Barbara, just know your actions today were totally OUT OF LINE and YOU are the main reason I'm giving this review a 1 STAR(I wish I could give it a 0). If you've been to any other Giant, you know what to expect with this location. They carry the usual grocery store suspects from produce to frozen food to greeting cards. I was pleasantly surprised to find this supermarket down near Mount Vernon Square. This is one of two supermarkets in the neighborhood, which is among a number of smaller specialty food stores in the area. The store is actually quite expansive and appears to be fairly well stocked. Visually, it does not completely feel like a traditional Giant, and I thought they did a good job incorporating the unique architecture into the layout. If you are looking for the main entrance, it is away from the main through street, which I learned after trying to enter through the unmarked doors in the rear. I also noticed that they were designed to have a cafe and a beer/wine bar but was disappointed to see that it looks like they no longer provide that concept. Overall, I like the convenience of having a major retailer just around the corner from one of my workplaces! read more

This Giant has been in this historic O Street Market location for almost 8 years already but still feels like a brand new place. Apparently it's one of the largest grocery stores in DC in terms of overall store space. It certainly looks nice, with high ceilings and wide aisles good for distancing. Product variety wise, probably not that different from my small local Giant but definitely a much nicer shopping environment with more spacious self and non-self checkout stations. This time took someone there to get vaccinated - the COVID vaccination area is all the way back from the entrance, next to the deli section. Situated in a slightly sunken open space, with portable partitions for privacy. The after shot waiting area is right by the deli section, with well spaced out chairs. All in all quite an impressive store in the up and coming Shaw area, about two blocks from the Green/Yellow Line Mt Vernon Square metro station. read more

Were that I were a poet and could do this place justice! Oh, that I were a glove upon that hand/That I might touch that cheek, etc. First of all, there's a bar. You can grab a beer and then toot around the store shopping. They tell you to never shop hungry, but shopping with one beer is the best decision you will ever make when grocery shopping. Trust me. Secondly, it's never crowded. Sure, it gets busy, but they have figured out a system to effectively and efficiently move guests through lines so you are out of there quickly. The people who work there seem genuinely happy to be there and are always friendly and helpful. Thirdly, they have everything. I mean everything. Berger cookies? Check. Plantain chips, the likes of which I have not seen since leaving from South America? Ch-check. Taylor Ham? (I don't know why New Jersians get excited over this, but they do and I have several in my life so there you have it. Pro or con in Giant's favor? I can't decide.) Check. There's bike parking outside, bus lines connecting it to Shaw and DuPont (where the grocery stores are truly scary), a huge beer and wine selection as well as a gluton free area and like actual pet products (dog beds! rabbit food!) I am so happy this place exists! read more

I never thought I'd give a Giant a good review but here we are. We stumbled across this Giant and my tummy appreciates it. Half of it seems really new and clean! It really caught me by surprise when I stopped in. The best thing about it so far is that they have a good selection of gluten free and speciality foods (like dairy free milk options) and dairy free icecream! I literally keep coming back for the SoDelicious Chocolate cookies and cream icecream. I will say I bought several cartons of ice cream the other day and they all had clearly defrosted a bit and refroze and it did taste funny. I didn't have the time or energy to return it so I dealt with it but going forward, I check the top to see if it is flat or if there is a big gap on one side (which would be mean it defrosted on its side and was refrozen). Anyway, enough about ice-cream-gate. The rest of the store is kind of old and dated. It's a weird mix of a store... not sure why they wouldn't renovate the whole thing and at least give it a little bit of a face lift. Also, there is never really any produce. The several times we've come by, ppl are just trying to pick through what is left, its a little sad. I think too many people shop on the weekends for them not to have enough fresh produce. TL;DR: It's a good store and mostly because it does have some items that are not always well stocked, but they could be better stocked when it comes to other staples like fresh veggies. read more

Giant - Put his hands on me and had his phone inches from my face, if thats not harassment. - Grocery Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Giant isn't the first place I think of when buying groceries. Aldi is cheaper and has good produce. However, Giant has a lot more variety and their store brand line is decent. They also have an in-house nutritionist. We took the diabetes tour with her. She was very nice. We walked through each department and she pointed out items to consider (or avoid). The tour was at 6pm, which isn't a time I would choose to visit this location. It gets crowded. Parking is $6/hour but Giant validates that hour (park on level 2 if you can) If you can't find a cashier, the validation station is also in the self check out area. read more

Very few business openings alter the fabric of my existence the way Giant Food has. I used to sit in my apartment at the brink of starvation, too lazy to get groceries because the nearest store was a 20 minute walk away. Now I can run to the store in the time it takes Bravo to complete one of their trademark long-ass commercial breaks. The size and selection of this Giant is truly impressive - the place carries shrimp crackers for Christ's sake. The avocados and chicken breast seem to be on perpetual sale. The beer and wine choices are plentiful. There are two self-checkout sections. These people GET me. I'd say that everything about this Giant is better than the average Giant. The produce is fresh (though they are conspicuously always out of cilantro), the meat selection is good (duck breast? don't mind if i do), and employees are certainly more helpful than at the Columbia Heights location. Finally, I have been delivered from the Shaw food desert. read more

When I was apartment-hunting last fall, my decision came down to two similarly priced options on Craigslist: a studio in Logan vs. a studio in Shaw. I'd say that about 90% of the reason why I chose my tiny studio in Shaw is because it's around the corner from this very Giant. I'll be damned if I have to settle for Whole Foods (or "Whole Paycheck," har har) as my local grocery store; that place is purely for special occasions as far as I'm concerned, such as buying a rack of lamb to cook for your beloved. Sure, when I stopped by Giant on a recent night, they were totally out of boneless skinless chicken thighs, as well as generic-brand plain Greek yogurt. Such disappointments have happened to me enough times that I know to avoid going on the weekends or on Mondays because they'll likely be running low on staples. (Who knew Monday was so busy? Probably full of people like me who procrastinated on grocery shopping over the weekend because they were lazing about.) Now that I've expressed my main grievance, let's move onto the many positives. How do I love thee, Giant? Let me count the ways: + Oh my goodness, GREAT sales. One time, I got two tubes of Colgate for about $1.50 from that bric-a-brac clearance section they have by the frozen foods aisle. It is full of seriously random stuff, like pumpkin spice extract and old gingerbread house kits and cheap beer. It's like thrift shopping at the grocery store, and I find it fun to plunder for gold. Also, they often have Talenti Gelato on sale for $3.99 and, in the spring months, strawberry punnets for buy one, get one free. + When I transferred my prescription from my old CVS in Chinatown to Giant, I was nervous because I somehow believed the pharmacists wouldn't be as good since they were located in a supermarket rather than a pharmacy. In actuality the pharmacists are quite competent, except for that one man who insisted that I had to pay for my birth control and ended up being proven wrong by my insurance company because, hello, it is free. It's wonderfully convenient getting my groceries and pills at the same time. + The beer selection is better than at Safeway. + Giant has the cheapest happy hour in the city. They also provide mimosas on the weekends. As my friend says, "Octavia at Giant will HOOK YOU UP." Love you, Giant! read more

My last experience and most current was one of the worst I've ever experienced. I generally like coming here because I think the aisles are wide. There is a decent selection of produce, and the things I am looking for are seldom out of stock. However, I bring shopping bags and I never get credit for them. If I need one, the cashiers are more than quick to charge me. On that same note, when I do have my shopping bags, more often than not, the cashier doesn't help bag. Instead, like this last time, Roro had a contest with herself and scanned my items as fast as possible throwing everything down to me. She miscounted many of my items and I got charged more than I should have, and she didn't help bag at all. Instead, her speed let everything pile up at the end. I didn't even have time to look up and make sure things were scanned correctly. I was just trying to keep up with catching everything Roro threw down at me. In the end, I was overcharged, items were damaged, and I left with a really horrible impression of the service I once praised. read more

My experience is usually decent when I visit but today and yesterday were otherwise. I am a local who has been around since the old giant and I have to say that customer service is steady declining. I also come to this store very often because I reside less than ten minutes away. During my visit today with my family we needed to be checked out at customer service because we needed formula for my infant. In the process of this we were assisted by Dorothy. While proceeding to pay my husband and I were deciding how we were going to split our payments between items. Dorthy said to us "It don't matter.." and kept ringing up our items. I had to first take a deep breath because why are you telling us that it don't matter?! I then had to say calmly; " I think what we were trying to decide is who is paying for what.." after that I let it go. Then yesterday evening at self check out and older lady was there with locs and somewhat slim build, tall. I did not get her name. My husband and I were purchasing alcohol. When the alarm rang to notify the worker, he handed over his ID, she rudely said "I cannot see that". I looked at my husband and he looked at me. At that point I almost went head to head because it isn't our responsibility to read you what's on the card especially if you're going to be rude about it. I then stated out loud so all bystanders can hear that don't care how I'm feeling on the job, you will never catch me being rude to customers. She then came back over, touched me TWICE when I told her not to and said she stated I wasn't being rude I don't have my contacts." Almost like she was trying to shut me up or calm me down. From a customers view not having contacts should have nothing to do with how you said what you said. Also if you know you do work that requires it make sure you have them unless it's another situation. There is a way to say things and conduct yourself while in a professional space. So glad I will be moving. Overseers of this place need to do another evaluation of the people they choose to hire. read more

Oh was I thrilled to have a grocery store walking distance to my hotel (The Cambria). I came in looking for hot foods, fruit and bottled water. Close proximity to a grocery store/market is usually one of my travel needs. I can't stand having to pay premium prices for bottled water or even a bottle of wine and would rather go to a store to purchase at regular price (rather than the inflated ones at hotels and bars). Plus, I have been eating pretty simple foods these days and don't want to pay premium prices for a piece of chicken or a salad. So, this store was absolutely perfect for all that I needed at the moment. They had an abundant supply of all of what I was looking for with decent prices, too. The store was organized and customer service was great. Their hot foods section was mediocre and did not have a vast selection of healthy items, but at least they had baked chicken. I actually enjoy going to the grocery store again! Coming from Texas, I am used to big, open, CLEAN, and friendly grocery stores. Until this Giant, I had found nothing close to that description in the last 4 years in DC. This Giant makes going to the grocery store something I longer hate doing. It is VERY clean, well lit, and the best part is all of the staff is very friendly and helpful. i went to this store for the first time today, had no idea it was there until I found it on yelp looking for Giants closest to downtown. Wow. The biggest supermarket in the city they say, and I'm sure it's true. This place has everything (at risk of sounding like Stefon on SNL), including a sunken dining area, tons of prepared food, huge selection, plenty of inventory, wide aisles, a bar (which I didn't see but read about), and lots of self checkout registers. I was in a hurry and didn't need much so didn't explore every aisle, but figured I would use this visit as a fact-finding mssion to see where it was exactly, what was there, the layout, etc. The address is on 7th but the entrance is actually on 8th and O, which is confusing. If you're on 7th and O coming from Capital One Arena turn left on O and it's on the corner of 8th and O. 7 blocks from Capital One Arena and Chinatown, 6 blocks from Logan Circle, walking distance to Howard University and the Convention Center. They built lots of housing and hotels when the built the GIant to have a built-in customer base. I wasn't that familiar with the neighborhood but it's a definite improvement over what I've heard the neighborhood used to be like. Great place for late night shopping I came here after a long road trip drive and we were lucky to find it open and clean too which wasn't something can be all the time. I often make it a point to stop into this Giant when I'm in the Shaw neighborhood. I'll confess - the lines can be long and they've even been known to run out of grocery carts. However, the general stock is very well-supplied (even during the recent blizzard), there's a nice deli, and a vast array of boos. Since you obviously come to Giant to shop, I think that's what's most important! I especially enjoy their ready-made meals, salad bar and bakery. From the potato egg salad, fresh lettuce and vanilla frosting, to the cream filled donuts, bakery bread and deli sandwiches, everything I've eaten has proven to be very reasonably priced and tasty. In my humble opinion, the Shaw neighborhood is lucky to have this rather large grocery hotspot! Who knows, maybe they'll eventually even figure out the issue with their slow lines and I'll have to update my review to a five rating! read more

When it comes to a neighborhood grocery store chain that feeds the family at a reasonable price, this is the store for you. Each time I have ventured inside this Giant, I have left pleasantly surprised, with my reusable grocery bags filled to the brim. Even today when I reluctantly walked through the doors to get additional staple items before the big snow storm, I departed not annoyed but grateful that I chose to go out of my way and shop here. Yes, the lines were extremely long, but the wait was half of what I expected them to be. In fact, the line progressed at such a steady pace that the nominated member of my party to stand in line had to call me to the front before I could get cheese and crackers. I expected the store to be out of the crucial staples such as bread and water, but what I found was just the opposite. The shelves were stocked! Even with all the hustle and bustle in the store, the employees smiled and were courteous. You know they had to be worried about how they were going to head home in this storm, but you would not know it. The level of customer service is akin to that of high end grocery stores. I would highly recommend shopping at this Giant. read more

I have to come clean with something. I've had a relationship for many years with Safeway on 5th and L. We've had our ups and downs over time, but I've recently started an affair...with the new Giant at O. O. My. Goodness. I can't even begin to describe the transformation that this Giant has undergone. It's truly amazing. And Safeway needs to step up its game if it wants to compete with all that Giant has to offer. Let me just sing some of its praises: -The wine and beer selection is phenomenal. -Cheese selection...mmmm. And they are so sneaky, placing it where you MUST walk by it. -They carry items that are hard to find (like HALVAH omg omg omg) -Meat and seafood department is pretty solid. And, they have a case of live lobsters. Too squeamish to boil 'em yourself? No biggie - they'll do it for you there. -Feeling thirsty? Need a drink but can't bring yourself to schlep down to the Passenger a few blocks away? Well, you can grab yourself a wine or beer at the bar to make your shopping trip a little more interesting. Also - they have growlers for sale! -The look and feel of the place is outstanding. Super, super high ceilings, so bright and airy, and I love the use of historic architectural details - the way the original walls of the building are incorporated are so neat. -In many ways, it feels like the closest DC is going to get to a Wegman's. And it is SO so huge. -It is way less crowded than Safeway and I've never had to wait to be checked out. And every employee I've interacted with has been helpful and cheerful, too! I'd say the pricing is pretty on par with Safeway, although they don't seem to have as much on sale. Sign up for a Giant card to take advantage of the savings that are offered. read more

Grocery shopping in the city can be pretty expensive and inconvenient, but that's not the case here. There is a fairly large free parking garage, that has a second lower level that connects straight to the store. There produce and meat/seafood sections are fresh and affordable. Their organic offerings are reasonable. And they have a couple of specialty items in stock that other Giant's in DC do not. Where they fail is their Peapod pick up. Which is ever so disappointing for me. There are no instructions provided for this location if you order pick up, but there is no one waiting for you. There is just a tiny sign that's pretty hard to locate that says you have to call the store. It's really inconvient and their staff isn't friendly enough once they arrive to make up for the experience. With that said, I find myself enjoying grocery shopping when I come here enough that I find less of a need to do Peapod delivery. Maybe that was their strategy all along... read more

Ever since this giant came in, grocery shopping has been so much more enjoyable on the weekends. And I've spent so much more time at the grocery store... 14th Street has some great grocery stores, including Whole Foods and, now, Trader Joe's. But what does one do if she is looking for some mainstream brand of cereal or some affordable meat or a cheap onion? And what if she doesn't want to wait in line for an hour? The answer: shop at Giant. This Giant is really quite giant. It feels like a grocery store in the suburbs, other than the fact that it has a bar where you can buy wine or beer and GO GROCERY SHOPPING WHILE DRINKING! What?!?! Yes, I've seen it happen. As you stroll along the aisles you are welcomed to drink and shop--probably a good marketing tactic to (1) get men to go grocery shopping, and (2) intoxicate people enough to not worry about how much money they're spending on groceries. I digress... This grocery store has a lot of products and probably has most anything you're looking for--as long as you look in the right section (note: some products are in the ethnic aisles; and some products may be in the ethnic and generic aisles, but the brands differ).
