Once upon a time there was a terrible GIANT grocery story at this location. Then it was closed and razed and upscale apartments were built in the area and the store was reopened as part of the O Street Market. At first everything was grand and the employees were great and everyone was happy with threir growler beers and organic produce.. Not longer than year later, the quality of service at this location has gone downhill so badly that I'm ready to go back to Safeway or Harris Teater. Heck, I'd spend twice as much at Whole Foods. Sure, when you walk in to get a few things and check it is usually fine, barring a gauranteed clusterf*ck at checkout. No, the real problem comes when you have to interact with an employee at the deli, meat, seafood counter. If an employee acknowledges you within 5 minutes of waiting at a counter, consider yourself lucky. Normally it takes a more desperate and angry look on ones face to get some service. The employee will then act as if it is an enormous imposition on them to serve a customer. Terrible terrible customers service. read more

Hey, its a grocery store. Decent looking produce, quality seafood and meats, competitive prices. Blah Blah Blah. Work your way to the right of the meat counter in the back of the store. There you will find a craft beer and wine bar where you can order a pint or a glass of wine. You can then walk around the store with it in your hand while you shop. I'm betting that Giant just cracked the uncrackable code. They hit the jackpot. They rubbed Aladdin's lamp just the way Aladdin likes it. I predict that men will now become fervent grocery shoppers, willing to make multiple trips to the store per day. Wives/girlfriends/boyfriends/SO's rejoice. God Bless America. read more

Giant is back, bigger and better than ever! Giant before it became O Street Market, this was the worst grocery store in DC. It's now topping my list of grocery stores to frequent. They are well stocked in produce and the staff is helpful. I also have never stood in kind for more than 5 minutes - much more than I can say for the Columbia Heights Giant. Best part: this Giant has a wine and beer bar in the grocery store. Grab a cocktail and grocery shop. (Try not to make too many bad decisions!) read more

Love love love this supermarket. I wish we had one like it in New York. This place is a one stop shop..they have a sandwich station, buffet for hot & cold food, sushi station, muffins & bakery goods, hell they even have a bar, and of course it's a supermarket. I had the pleasure of trying out the buffet station, muffin, & sandwich station. The sandwiches are made to order, I had a pastrami sandwich. The meat was very fresh and taste great, it put me in the mind of Katz Deli that how good the pastrami was. They offer fresh vegetables & cheese for your picking. The sandwich price was great $6.00. The muffin station, omg the variety of muffins were grand. I had a banana nut muffin, the muffin was so moist you don't have to worry about swallowing & choking on a dry muffin. The muffin had walnuts through out instead of just on the top which I loved. The buffet station I had a bit of everything, the fried fish was crispy and crunchy and well seasoned. The sweet potatoes was so good, the fried chicken was crispy & well seasoned. The salad was fresh & they offer an array of vegetables. I didn't care to much for the crab salad but overall everything was good. The salad cost $7.99 a pound. The seafood section is a pretty decent size with an array of fresh & cooked seafood. Jumbo shrimps for $8.00 a pound, nice size lobster tails for $5.00 per tail, a large ball of steamed shrimp with old bay for $20.00 the prices are a steal. The supermarket is super clean with more than enough staff on the floor to restocked and answer your questions. The prices for groceries were very reasonable & affordable. Which is a good thing since food prices are fairly high now a days. There are several check out lines and self service check out lines, making check out a breeze. read more

Oh heyyyyy Giant .. you fancy. Coming from a three year stint in Columbia Heights, I began engulfing my self in beliefs that Giant was the grocery store where heathens, callers of the night, and drugs deals went down. Employees pants sagging to the floor reciting two chain lyrics; all the norm. I stopped going for fear of being shanked, unless a late night wine run was absolutely required. Fast forward to my new move-in to Shaw while being carless, and I came across you Giant. I hesitantly stepped in, awaiting to be accosted by some whipper snapper, however I was mind-fucked (harder then Puffy in Get Him to the Greek). The place is epically beautiful. The designers did an excellent job with the space; feels like a reclaimed carriage house. What put me over the top was the ability to have a draft beer and walk around while I'm shopping. Bravo Giant, bravo. I foresee my Sunday 8am grocery shopping becoming jsut that much slightly more interesting. This location also does Growler fills, however, after discussing with the Beer and Wine Manager ... I was informed they fill straight from the tap and the growlers are not pressurized or sealed. Please be aware, filling this way will leave a growlers contents okay for only one-two days max! I enjoyed my dark stout while shopping but not the $6.00 price that came along side it. Although the store is beautiful, I found myself not finding certain items I would at Harris Teeter. I did notice that they have jumped on the Kale bandwagon here, and stocked what appeared as a metric ton in the produce department. I was pretty disappointed in the fish selection. Maybe five kinds of fish, all farm raised, and pre-frozen. I believe this is a recurring issue at most Giant's, but as DC's flagship store I'd expect to at least be able to get fresh tuna and wild salmon. 90% of your staff was overjoyed/friendly and explaining all about the new store to me. The staff behind the front desk however, left something to be desired. Very unpleasant. All in all, until I get my car and able to return back to Teeter and Whole Foods, I will definitely return! read more

The Best Giant in the City! The staff was more than helpful and the store is very clean. This location lives up to the hype of new, trendy and a place to shop for groceries. This is a major upgrade from a regular Giant and the shelves remained fully stocked with everything I needed. Being close to the metro and convention center makes this an all day event when in the area. I will go out the way to visit this location when in the city! read more

I generally like this location, but I had the misfortune of going through a check-out line with a Cashier named Lisa. Lisa is nothing less than a surly and lazy employee. It's too bad that Washington, DC has trouble hiring workers who are willing to come to work on time and do their jobs. Lisa presents herself in a way that says she doesn't want to be there and her employer, including Store Manager Jerome Debrew, cares little to do anything to change the situation. Lisa is a lazy and entitled worker. Shoppers are simply stuck with what they get; and it's not much. read more

There is a lady at the pharmacy there who is really awesome. She goes way out of her way to make sure that you, as the customer are taken care of. Today she helped me pick out the best over-the-counter medication for my seasonal allergies by sorting through all of them to provide me with the one best suited my specific symptoms and was on sale. The last time I was there she gave me a $25 gift card to use at Giant just for transferring over my prescriptions from CVS. Some of the staff are friendly and helpful with regular grocery shopping. Other times, the regular grocers cannot provide good customer service. In the Shaw district's historic O Street Market, I'd give this place a chance just to stop and look in. Oh, and did I mention that this is the biggest Giant in all of Washington DC. read more

I'm amazed this store gets such great reviews. Both this Giant and the Safeway close by have a terrible selection of fresh produce. I guess if you like tomatoes rotting, overripe avocados, wilted bagged lettuce that's expiring in 1 day, dried out carrots, flaccid celery and beat-up onions, then this is the place for you! Also, I noticed when this store first re-opened, the employees would greet you as you walked down the aisle and ask if you needed anything. Now, they barely acknowledge you - even if you're standing in front of them at the cash register. Also, often times you'll see employees sitting at the entrance eating fried chicken, pizza and other food from the store's deli. Apparently Giant doesn't provide employees with a break room or they just like dining al fresco. Either way, it's gross. I'm not a huge fan of Whole Foods, but I go there for produce. It seems like their management and employees take more pride in their store. read more

Before this store opened, there were rumors in the air that this store was going to be like Wegmans. Not sure if that's accurate or just a rumor someone started. The Pros: Huge wine/beer selection, tons of chilled champagne, beautiful building, you can drink wine or beer while you shop (whaaat!), fresh produce and really polite, friendly staff. Oh, and parking isn't a nightmare, yet anyways. The Cons: NOT like Wegmans. I was hoping to have a store that I can eat dinner in prior to shopping. I went on opening day and got a really medicocre panini that took about 15 minutes to make. I thought, OK this is day one, they will work this out. I went again two weeks ago at 7:45 and because the salad bar was already put away, I had to get a sandwich, which took 15 minutes again and wasn't even good. Hopefully it isn't that slow during peak times. Overall, I'm really disappointed with the cafe other than the beer and wine. My thoughts about eating there are "if I have to", but might as well stop at Sundevich on the way instead of getting something there. On a positive note, I think this store is a staple in making Shaw a better place! read more

I go to this location often. I recently ordered a cake from the bakery to be picked up at 12noon. When I got to the bakery at 12:10 no one was there. I asked for someone to be paged. After being paged I waiting for an additional 30 mins. Unfortunately, when someone did show up they were extremely rude and didn't offer any level of customer service. I am not sure I will order from here again. read more

The area is not too busy but there are always people hanging around outside this location. The store is clean but the shelves are not stocked well. There were several items missing off of different shelves. I'm guessing that means during the day they were busy because I went in the evening. read more

I have known this store and was a regular customer since the grand opening in 2014. At the beginning everything looks like good but gradually the basic peace of store degraded, customer service. Now a day you may buy fresh foods and find things in order and in stock but don't expect good customer service. The staff starting from the big boss/store manager/ is the worst ever i experienced. No one will respect you as a customer they just think you go there as if the only option as they are in the area. I am really sorry to say that they will loos lots of customers because of their rude behavior with customers. I suggest not to visit this store if you are looking for good customer service. read more

After many disappointing excursions to the Giant in Columbia Heights, I'm so happy to see a new, gleaming store in the Shaw neighborhood. This store is super spacious and features a decently sized natural and organic section to compete with neighboring Whole Foods. Unlike Safeway, their produce is pretty fresh and affordable. For the most part, they have a decent selection but I wish they offered a greater variety of frozen and fresh seafood. They have self checkouts on both sides of the store and a good amount of cashiers to prevent long lines. Staff is friendly and accomodating. I'm really hoping service and quality don't go down as time goes passes since this is an awesome addition to the neighborhood. read more

This is a really nice giant especially if you like specialty Lori ducts. They have a huge selection of vegan and gluten free items and I just love it. They've got great prepared foods. Their sushi is pretty good, but the salmon sushi is amazing. As good of quality if not better of if you went out to a sushi restaurant. It gets busy here on Sunday and weekday night so be prepared for a line. read more

I love this location. Very clean and great produce. The meat is not the greatest selection. They shouldn't have changed their self checkout, the change has made it very slow. read more

I thought it was impossible that this grocery store could live up to the hype. I'd heard about it since I started looking at apartments in the neighborhood, but how great it could it be? It's just a grocery store. A giant Giant, with aisles wide enough for several carts at once. A refurbished old building with 50-foot ceilings. A supposedly (and in reality!) friendly staff who always knows which aisle my random items are in. A bar in the back where you can order a beer or glass of wine - yes - and carry it with you while you shop. Free wifi. Very good produce. An impressive wine and beer selection. Okay, so it's probably apparent by now that I drank the Kool-Aid. But even so, believe me: this is an above average grocery store. It feels like a Whole Foods for the average gal (read: person on student loans who can't afford Whole Paycheck). The olive bar is soli, and the fresh sushi comes through. My only complaint is that the self-checkouts can be kind of wonky, but hey - that happens everywhere. read more

The development and launch of the new City Market looks and feels phenomenal. The Shaw neighborhood will surely benefit by having this shopping option around. I took a stroll through here shortly after its grand opening and I am very impressed with what I saw. The store is large but not big boxy ginormous with every offering under the sun. And residents in the area should feel assured with the Giant Foods brand. There are the staples which one can get anywhere. But I'm always most concerned with the selection, availability and quality of the meat, seafood, and beer and wine sections. From what I saw, this Giant has the goods. The seafood section has plenty of fresh (or frozen) options, including pre seasoned/marinated selections. Same goes for the meat section. But what I liked most about this store is the beer section. Not the ordinary section that carries six packs in the cooler. Here, you can get pints or refillable growlers of good craft beer. The growler will set you back $5 bucks, plus the cost of your beer selection. But the unique thing at this store is the Pint offering, which can be consumed in the store, either at the adjacent café or, if you choose, you can push your cart around the store while enjoying a cold draft brew. There is also wine on tap, of which you can do the same: cause when you gotta have a beer or a glass of wine, why wait until you get home with your groceries? There is also a well-stocked section of prepared foods with pizza, chicken, fish, sushi and more. I can't speak on the overall experience at this store, as I only took a stroll through the place. Time will tell when it comes to customer service and/or whether the store is properly managed. But the place looked great and I can't wait to race down the aisle with my alcoholic beverage of choice. What a novelty. read more

Beer and wine bar for enjoying a beverage while you shop. Need I say more? Giant's new Flagship store in DC. Much needed in this neighborhood. Huge selection, salad bar, hot bar, large selection of beers and wine, friendly service. Not sure really what else there is to say, I mean, it's still a grocery store. read more

I had such high hopes for and was so excited about this Giant when it opened. So nice and fancy, fresh produce, beer on draft, quick checkout lines!. This was our new grocery store! But alas - it seems like we're inching towards the old Giant - not so great produce - wilty cilantro, moldy(?) onions, shortage of tomatoes, etc. The kicker is how extremely slow the checkout process was - reminding me of EXACTLY one of the reasons we hated the old Giant so much. read more

Stopped by this new Giant last Saturday to get some flowers and snacks for a friend who was in the hospital at Howard. Wow. I love this store. I was born and raised in Upstate New York, where Wegmans is king. When I first moved to the DC area 15 years ago, the only thing I missed was Wegmans and I missed it bitterly. I slowly came to like Giant stores. In fact, I can almost say I love Giant stores now. Wegmans who?? Anyway, the woman working at the floral desk last Saturday was wonderful. We got a beautiful floral arrangement and wanted a fruit basket. There was just one in the cooler section and it looked as if it has seen better days. She said she would make us a fresh one and went and got a bunch of fruit from the produce department and made a huge fruit basket for us. She was really great and so friendly and helpful. We wandered around the store a bit while we were waiting. Of course this is a new store, so it is much nicer than my local Giant. Great produce and healthy/organic food section. What a great addition to my favorite DC neighborhood. read more

i normally have no problem shopping at giant. HOWEVER, this giant is probably among the worst in DC. you can never find anything you need, either the garlics not stocked, the bok choy is completely missing, or the ingredients shift with no rhyme or reason. they have a really low bar to hit and they can't even reach that. you're better off going to the giant in columbia heights, or even a different grocery store chain. read more

Words cannot fully express my breathless excitement at discovering a brand new Giant had opened mere steps from my apartment (I travel frequently/ throw out all of my junk mail without reviewing it, so I believe I found out later than most normal people). It's safe to say, I probably will never go to Safeway again (no pun intended). I've shopped here a few times now, and I am still getting used to the store's layout. I'm not sure if it is because I always shop tired, but it still doesn't make complete sense to me (holiday decorations in the freezer section?), though I'm sure I will become used to it with time. It's a bit more expensive (and by a bit, I mean a few cents at most) than the Safeway on L, but overall it is brighter, cleaner, and has a better selection of products. Plus, I have not yet had my ass grabbed in the checkout line. I probably won't stop going to Whole Foods in Logan for my bourgeoisie grocery needs (Cajun spiced hybrid olives! Random wine tastings! Fresh ground honey roasted peanut butter made by a free-spirited troop of elves in the North Pole!), but for everything else, there is Giant. P.S. You can buy an alcoholic beverage at the bar and take it with you whilst you shop (the carts have built-in cup-holders). It makes for a more interesting basket of groceries at the end of the night. P.P.S. If you are someone who doesn't carry a lot of change like myself and are a cart-needing person, make sure you take a quarter with you before going to the store for the security device on the carts. Apparently inserting a quarter into your cart will prevent you from becoming too attached and running off with it at the end of your grocery store journey. Plus it's the only way that Giant will let you use one. read more

Huge improvement over the Giant that used to reside nearby (before being torn down). Parking is a little confusing right now; I THINK it is is on the street between 6th & 7th, but not sure. Inside is very nice -- they have high ceilings, wide aisles, and every sort of counter a young person like me who does not like grocery shopping might want or need (even if they didn't realize it before seeing said counter). Case in point: a sushi bar, cheese bar and beer/wine bar. TIP regarding beer/wine: you can order a pint of beer or glass of wine and drink it WHILE shopping. How awesome is that? Very awesome, in my opinion. It elevates the shopping experience, especially if you get to pint #2 ... read more

When I moved into Shaw in 2011, there was a something store by the name of Giant here. It sold things that I wasn't too sure as to what they were, and traditional rules of buying food in developing countries applied: if you cannot peel or boil the edible content, then it's probably best to leave it alone. Basically, I typically was scared to buy anything that wasn't hermetically sealed. So I lived off of Stouffer's, 99 cent Giant brand individual pizzas, and ice cream for about a year. It did wonders to my cholesterol and waist line. The good news was that you could show up at 3:30 am on a Wednesday morning and do your shopping. It was small consolation. But after floating in the mediocrity of Safeway on L and 5th for a little while, a new dawn approacheth. This was some grocery mecca that had a loyalty card program and produce that looked like it never seen the inside of a Soviet storage bin, let alone for three weeks. I had arrived and never looked back. Where else can you pre-game while doing your grocery shopping and getting your prescription filled? Where else can you buy freshly made food for a fraction of what you would pay at restaurants (and it tastes better)? Where else can you get a diner experience in a historical building? Basically the place is awesome. It's Whole Paycheck without giving up your whole paycheck. read more

We've started making Giant our go-to grocery store (we have several to choose from). The prices are very reasonable. The staff has been professional each time we go. On our last visit, we were going to get basics and then head to Whole Foods to find organic and sugar free items for the baby -- including sugar free organic peanut butter. We found every single thing we were looking for at Giant and didn't have to go to WF at all. That's pretty impressive for a day-to-day type grocery. One person commented that the layout isn't intuitive and that is true. But once you get used to the store you will be happy you shop here. read more

It is a pretty well stocked grocery conveniently near the hotel I was staying at. However, went to the "deli" to buy a variety of meats and cheeses in the early afternoon for sandwiches. We told her we wanted to get some items sliced, and she instead directed us to large sized prepackaged stuff, who knows when cut. I never buy it that way. we do not want a person at the deli deciding what or how much we want. I doubt everything in the case was also prepackaged. Wonder why they waste space and pay on a deli that does not serve customers. Now I have to spend time finding a real deli that cuts on demand. read more

It's an open, clean, bright store. Drawbacks: employees mostly appear to hate their job, at least w/ their attitude/demeanor; out of the 10 or so check out lines, only 1 - 3 are staffed most of the time; the meat department is 1/2 chicken of every shape and size, but try to get a flank steak or roast and you're barking up the wrong tree; and, the vegetable/produce is oddly and consistently not stocked. I often find I'll simply go to Whole Foods to ensure I get what I need. Not that much of a price difference. read more

This Giant is spacious and offers a good selection of items. It is clean and has two self check out areas as well as a bakery, deli, seafood station and a pharmacy. My one problem is they tend to focus on black shoppers especially at the self checkout. I recently returned to DC after accepting a project management job here. I also went to undergraduate school and graduate school here and I live a few blocks from this Giant, so it is always insulting and disappointing when I notice that I am being watched at the self check out or anywhere else in the store. Stopped in because the cafe looked inviting from the outside and I needed a quick lunch. Unfortunately, they don't have any healthy prepared foods. Hate to break the news, Giant, but sushi rolls made with white rice and fake crab meat or mystery fish doused with brown mystery sauce are not healthy. Nor are hoagies made with white bread, processed meat, and fake bright yellow cheese. And those were the "healthy choices." That nice cafe I saw from outside? Occupied by a homeless man with his worldly possessions forming a tower in a shopping cart. I nevertheless picked up a pre-made Ceasar salad and a few other staple items I'd need later in the week, and went to the self-service check out. I placed my backpack in the bagging area so I could load my groceries. Right away the voice in the self-checkout machine said "Please scan your items before placing them in the bagging area," thereby starting the customer experience by accusing me of shoplifting. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to scan my groceries, pay, and get the hell out of there, a Giant employee came over and pushed some buttons on the self-checkout machine, which allowed me to pay for my purchases without future accusations of larceny. It took forever to check out, after which I was so tired and hungry that I just wanted to take my salad to the cafe, eat it, and head home, tower-of-homeless-man's-possessions or not. Except that in my haste to leave, I did not get my receipt. The cafe is located in the opposite corner of the very big store. Not wanting to be accused of shoplifting a Caeser salad, I bailed and left the store. Given the distance between the checkout area and the cafe, maybe that's why there weren't any customers in the cafe? Maybe Giant Corporate designed it that way: Lure the customers with a cafe but make it so unpleasant they hustle out the door once they finish their purchases. Memo to Giant Corporate: The District of Columbia imposes a tax on each plastic bag that a store provides, and people who live here are environmentally conscious. For these reasons, D.C. residents often bring their own bags to the supermarket. Often their bags contain other items that they are carrying on the way, if they are coming from or going to school, work, the gym, etc. When they use your self check-out machines, they must put their bags in the "bagging area." Try to adjust your system so that your customers can do this without being accused of shoplifting. CVS is capable of this. You should be too. I give this store two stars instead of one because each and every Giant employee I encountered on my visit today was friendly and super-helpful. I hope they are paid well. read more
