Mt. Pleasant is a neighborhood I have not yet fully explored, so when I visited one Saturday morning, I didn't know quite where to begin looking for a quick, easy bagel. After all, everyone knows that Saturdays are for the breakfast bagels. Yelping around, there were a few options, but most were pricey and complicated whereas my heart only desired a simple egg and Swiss bagel that wouldn't engulf my meager paycheck. That's why I was thrilled to see Argyle Market Deli. The bagel sandwich was so warm and tasty, and the market itself was well stocked and cozy. Argyle Convenient Store is a larger than normal bodega on the north side of Mt. Pleasant Street NW. It's run by friendly faces and has anywhere from basic food items to lottery tickets to basic household items. One unique thing about this bodega is the pastry and coffee corner if you need an early morning, quick breakfast/cup of coffee. It's not the best food or coffee you'll have, but it gets the job done. Think gas station coffee and quality of pastries. Pro-tip: They do NOT have baby food, but Bestworld nearby does! read more

Argyle Market is located close to my apartment so I stopped in today for the first time to purchase a half gallon of milk. Unless I have an emergency, I will never shop there again. The service was horrendous; I waited (with no one in front of me) for a good few minutes before a woman casually walked up and rung up my milk, which was outrageously priced at $5.16 for a half gallon. I would give it zero stars but have to give 1 to register any rating, but I can assure you 1 star is extremely overrated for this lousy market. read more

I live in the neighborhood and frequent this place often. However, I never bought anything from their deli until today. The simple egg and cheese I ordered was a disaster: the "egg" consisted of a precooked patty with a hard, grey middle, and the cheese tasted off, as if it were expired. I should have known something was up when the store called me and told me they couldn't sub in egg whites. Argyle could be the neighborhood So's Your Mom if they used fresh, quality ingredients. A great neighborhood market with a solid variety of beverages, chips, and sweets. The sandwiches (pre-packaged and made to order) are good - I'm a fan of their Italian one. I like to stop in and see what varieties of chips or Kit Kats they may have as they sometimes have a new or seasonal one. Unlike other small shops in the neighborhood, the sodas and snacks are always new or recent (not expired like other places). The caffe vanilla coffee is a nice indulgent hot drink on those days (or nights) where you crave something sweet to warm you up. read more

I prefer Samber, which is across the street, BUT this place is open later hours than Samber. Every now and then, I find myself here to pickup some beer, which is the only thing I've purchased here. They have a pretty good selection of beer and wine. Other reviewers have mentioned a rude owner, but I've never experienced that personally. Interactions with whoever is running the counter have always been fairly pleasant. My only issue with this place (and why I deducted a star) is that there always seems to be a number of people loitering outside at any given time. Every now and then, someone will ask me for money, and this is why I tend to avoid walking by this place when I can. read more

Since I live in the Argyle, this store is VERY convenient indeed. My favorite feature is the giant case of Hershey Ice Cream novelties. You can get a mini ice cream sandwich for $0.25! My only complaint is that the store attracts people who also like to hang out on my front step. read more

Wide selection / open late / takes cards. The service and wine selection across the street at Samber is really the best, but Argyle is the good ol' reliable convenient store at this end of Mt. Pleasant, and a good alternative for Columbia Heights when the Corner Market is closed (CVS being never worth it unless you have a prescription). read more

Come inside and you'll find decent selection of wine and beer, with good prices (RedHook 6-packs are a good $6.99). This is a big lottery outlet, and there seems to always be a desperate-looking construction worker checking over the calendar of winning numbers. Otherwise, you will appreciate the historic plaque on the side of the building, and you will love the surprisingly large selection of combs. Friendly neighborhood bodega. Argyle is bigger than your average corner shop, so it's a nice option for late-night supply runs of any stripe. Goods are what you'd expect from a bodega, but with a larger variety of options. I' lived in this neighboorhood all my life and I have seen the wonderfull transformation. I lso remember the old Argyle with the original owner. It was always a joy to run in and buy a 5cent candy or bubble gum. The owner was always happy to see us kids. Now I try very hard not to go in there. THE OWNERS are always rude and the wife seems to always have an attitude, she acts like you owe her something, like shes doing you a huge favor. The entire community has definitly changed. At this store they can care less!!!!! Junk is all they have OOOO lets not forget the alcohol and all hoodlooms hanging infront making the neighboorhood look bad. Look it, the people who own and operate the Argyle are basically a nice group, and at $1.25 for a 20 ounce soft drink, the prices aren't too shabby. My lone crticism is that they cater to a large population of losers and street urchins who have nothing better to do with their money than piss it away on the DC lottery. I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to piss away their money any way they like, but once I'm inconvenienced because I have to wait for some 350 lb woman to read $25 worth of lottery numbers to the cashier before lumbering on her way to another "blessed" day, I am off the field. I've left the store empty handed on numerous occasions on account of this and made my purchase at the Samber accross the street instead. read more

Go across the street to Samber. Even though this is the closest store to my house the items are the most expensive on Mt Pleasant Street. To top it off the owner is surly and rude to customers. We used to live in Argyle and a couple years ago we were awaken in the middle of the night by the blazing fire in the convenient store. By the time we woke up and ran outside the place was engulfed. As we were friendly with the building owner he told us that he gave the owner an option to rebuild as a more upscale place as the demographics of the neighborhood were clearly changing. The owner chose to go back to selling only lottery tickets, cigarettes and beer for the El Salvadorian customers believing that it was the core audience and nothing would change. So the interior was rebuild to look just like the old place did. read more

I can see the ice cream freezer from my window across the street. And in that freezer are $.35 ice cream bars and popsicles. Woohoo! They have a better selection of junky snacks than Samber, across the street, and they're open until midnight every night. The owners have been there for at least 25 years. They were never closed a day until the fire several years ago. Like any little bodega, it's not cheap for grocery items, but as I - like most people - only by food there when it's too late to go elsewhere, I can't complain. read more
