Diamante was very helpful as I worked through the mess of trying to find my driver to return it. it took me about 30 minutes, and Diamante was very professional and helpful to all the customers with whom he interacted. This Safeway is conveniently located near several apartment buildings. There is parking downstairs. As a Verizon customer, I do not have WiFi throughout the store which makes shopping a hassle because you are unable to look up recipes or even access their app to clip coupons. The store overall, the flow is easy to understand and the shelves are relatively well maintained. They always have security in the front who are very kind. Please don't confuse check-ins for endorsement. The location is near places I frequent. The Amazon lockers are one of the reasons I am on the property. The guards are pleasant. Their main role is to check their emails or texts. Many of the employees are annoyed that I have the audacity to ask a question while trying to buy something. Sometimes a cashier will care. The sale items are not always updated in the system. Certain prices are only available if you use the Safeway app. Cell service usually only works if you are near the windows. Safeway needs to up their game. Guests attending the convention center have two places to purchase cheap snacks: CVS & Safeway. The layout could be improved. The focus should be grab and go food - not wine. Starbucks keeps dwindling. The flower staff never know how much an item is. There are built in customers with the apartments & condos attached to the building. Local customers aren't treasured. I fired the pharmacy years ago when I was given the wrong dosage of a prescription. With all the safety protocols, that shouldn't have happened. The deli staff are hit or miss but also the most friendly in the store. Sometimes a manager will care, but not enough to implement permanent change. Harris Teeter is about 5 blocks away. The store is still a go-to store, but right now, I have a couple bakery items that have upset my stomach. One is a container of four "Orange-Rum" muffins that was on the discount rack. The other is a French mini-bagette bread. The muffins make my stomach upset; the bread has something like MSG in it that make my mouth dry and headache. The other week I had purchased a bag of bagels that were okay. Please be careful with Safeway baked goods even if they look appetizing. The discount rack containers are not sealed very well for instance, so anyone can actually tamper with the baked goods in the containers, and I think one of the muffins may have had a finger impression on it. The breads may not be listing all the ingredients even if it is fresh baked they may be using preservatives but it is not listed. On the balance the vegetables and fruit section seems to have improved. The veggies are no longer as wilted and over-priced but you have to expect that they are quickly picked over and not in as many quantities in proportion to shoppers because the shelf space is limited. Also the bagged salads---sometimes they are already starting to wilt, so one has to be careful to not choose a bag that has rotting leaves. If you have time, one should try the Farmers Market which is open every Saturday at the triangle park NE on Massachusetts and Fifth. They have fresh veggies and at least one baked goods stall. For the last two years I have walked a block away from here without realizing this was here. Now that I do know this is here I see myself stopping here either on my way in to work or home from work. It's a great asset to me for picking up a needed item. I initially came here as I was staying in the city for the week during a conference. I needed to stock myself up on snack and drink items so that I didn't need to constantly go out and find something nearby. It has been a while since I have been to a proper city grocery store and I forgot what it was like to shop at one. Interesting how there are gates to enter and, depending on how you check out, gates to exit. Once inside I feel like the aisles are narrow and makes it a bit hard to shop with other people in the same aisle. Makes it a bit hard to browse. What I do like is the prepared food section. I'm able to grab a few items for a quick breakfast or something to take home so I don't have to cook at night. It is quite a nice place to have on my trek to work. What confuses me about this place is the registers. The introvert in me always takes me to the self checkouts. I ran through here once I figured it out. I kind of sat back a second when I was done and figured I would find a way to get out of here. Seeing that you need to scan your receipt once you complete your transaction, I feel like I'm a regular here now. read more

This is one of the newest Safeway's that I've ever been in. They have everything that most grocery stores have and then some. The Starbucks is located toward the front of the store and I'm glad it's here, however they leave customers with nowhere to sit! Several of the other Safeway stores that I've been to have tables and chairs. That's come in handy for me while I was having lunch and enjoying one of their lre-made deli sandwiches. That's not the deal here and I'm not sure why because the area is not that ghetto.. The parking is almost non-existent. On the bright side, they do sell freshly made sushi. Pros: very convenient, there's often a good deal on something. Cons: everything else. This is the worst safeway I've ever been to. The quality of the produce is bad - things are not fresh and I've seen moldy food on the shelves (for example, some of the clementine/mandarin bags have some fruit in there are molding). You have to closely inspect all the produce to make sure that it's somewhat fresh. They also do not update some of the sale price tags - you'll see something advertised for 6.99 and see that the deal is already several weeks past its validity date. This is very frustrating since once again, you have to inspect the price tag. I understand if it's a day or two out of date - but for it to be several weeks is not a good look. You have to pay extreme close attention to what you're buying. As a result, it's a more tiring trip than most other grocery stores in the surrounding area. read more

I hate to be a Negative Nancy, a term coined by popular culture, but this is one of the worst Safeways I have ever been to. As a former grocery store employee, I prefer to bag my own groceries to keep them organized. The employees get upset when you want to bag your own things then when you swipe an EBT card, they act as if you do not have any money. These employees need a course on customer service. I had to attempt to ring my groceries up twice and swipe my EBT card twice. That is completely unacceptable. Employees should be more aware and helpful to a DeafBlind HOH person. Employees act "ignorant" on purpose when people are attempting to purchase food. Finally, I found that the McCormick and Schmick's Ground Mustard was opened and laced. That is a felony of 25 to life. The lights are also very dim. Overall, the ambiance here is demonic and ghostly. read more

Went there today, although it was a good selection, I saw a mouse in the bakery section in the middle of day which means infestation . Becareful with Digital coupon Per Safeway policy, "Internet and digital coupons that have been electronically loaded to a Safeway Club Card are automatically redeemed at the time of purchase after the club card number has been entered". The receipt was not shown the price redeemed for the item I clipped digital coupons on my Safeway app. I asked customer service why it happened. They check my app for the items to see if it was clipped. Then they gave me cash for he difference. When I went home I looked at the receipt. i found out another item that from the digital coupon i had clipped has not been redemm for the price. I bought only a few items so I could find out or remembered what items were from digital coupon clipped. I could have not detect this scam if I bought too many items, including the items that do not belong to digital coupons. So, don't trust the digital coupon since Safeway did not program to have items with digital coupons to have automatically redeemed the amount as its advertisement read more

Where to start... The entrance doors do not work (I've had to pry them open). The staff is really rude and unprofessional. I heard one employee tell a customer that another employee was an "asshole." But great if you're coming from the convention center, capital one arena, chinatown for the movies or dinner, 6th and I synagogue, Portrait gallery/american art museum, shakespeare theater, or really anywhere downtown including metro center. 490 L, but really 5th and L. Parking under building. Walking to chinatown and convention center metro stations. DC stores sell alcohol which MD stores do not, so it's really 1 stop shopping. Since I've sampled the water, I run like the wind. Safeway thought Giant was the competition but now I go to Trader Joe's. Aldi for my almond milk and just wait until I start going to Mom's. Anyway, sometimes I'm in Safeway, surprised that Whole Foods hasn't posted up in Mount Vernon. This Safe is different from the Maryland Avenue NE one and the one on Alabama Avenue SE. It's clean, bright and has self-checkout. About that. I don't understand why some of the machines are always out-of-order. That's very CVS style. I haven't had a horrible experience here but I've never been here to actually make groceries. I am usually stopping by for a snack while on break. First of, she never clean or sanitize the pad or the area where the previous customers were, also every time I'm at Safeway this cashier never wore her mask correctly. The mask is always under her nose. I found out from my receipt her name is Patricia. Alright Safeway management & Ms Patricia P, let me know as soon as you following the cdc guideline and how to wear the mask correctly then you can tell us to step back and watch our 6ft distance. By the way, I think the only person that goes above and beyond is the tiny Asian woman manager(who's always running around making sure everyone is doing their job) and staff behind the seafood/meat department. Probably one of the most poorly managed grocery stores I've been too. Frequently don't have carts available. Always ridiculously along lines. They only ever have 1-2 checkout lines available despite having around 12 checkout lanes. Self-checkout is even worse. They rarely have all the kiosks available. Employees are frequently standing around or on their phones. There could be several kiosk lights on indicating that shoppers need help, and the only way you'll get help is if you wave them down or attempt to find someone. Shelves are also consistently out of stock. A lot of shopper at this location are locals that live in the area. If there were another grocery store nearby, I'm sure most wouldn't go to this location again. read more

The more I'm here the more I'm disappointed. I realize that this is not the average grocery store and that my tolerance is just very high tolerance when I come here. Often they are out of food on Sundays and Mondays due to the rush. In addition there section of organic foods is almost always lacking. When you go to the checkout line it's always a problem. I'm not saying that employees are nice because I actually like the employees. But when you do self check out often the person is not at the station. This obviously means long lines and a long wait for people who have to wait for that lady to click a button every time you're using your own bag. The area of Mt. Vernon Square is developing rapidly. Unfortunately, this Safeway location is increasingly unable to keep up with the growth of the area. Tonight, as is typical for this Safeway location, there was only one cashier on a busy Saturday night. The line was backed up the length of an ENTIRE isle. Either no effort was made to move night stockers to cashiers, or there wasn't enough staff to do so. Also, no manager visible to handle the agitated customers. Customers were abandoning their carts, letting their children eat the goods that hadn't yet been paid for, and customers were vo cally expressing reasonable impatience. Safeway, this is an unacceptable shopping experience. Please staff appropriately to meet the volume of this growing area. At the very least, keep the self checkout area open until you can hire and staff according to demand. Utterly disappointing. And highly unfair to the wonderful employees that you do have on staff that are doing their best to keep a smile. read more
