They take care of your natural food needs and definitely are there for any essential oils at reasonable prices. I often get the peppermint oil for a home deodorizer and clove oil for my and my husband's emergency dental needs. It's worth the experience even if you don't purchase anything. read more

Glut is great! Glut is the best place to buy organic foods, or bulk items when you only need a little of something. I bought some rice for an essential oil aromatherapy bag I needed to fill. I had the bag and oils at home, but no rice. I also bought whole wheat flour to make dog biscuits. I had white, cake, and self rising flour, but no whole wheat. I got what I needed without buying products that would go to waste. I love the vibe of this Co-op. The employees are great. Too bad my school in nearby Riverdale is being demolished and I have been relocated to Landover. I guess I will be by on Saturdays now until my school is rebuilt. read more

Glut is a one-of-a-kind place. It's not a commercial grocery. It's a cooperative. This gives the store a certain attitude and spirit. I've been shopping here for close to 30 years. It really hasn't changed much in that time. If you want no human interaction and a rapid check-out, then go elsewhere because that's not what Glut is focused on. If there are few customers at Glut, then, okay, a quick stop is possible. But don't count on it. And actually, that can be a positive experience. It's a throw-back, but in a good way. Glut sells quality organic food. That's what I shop here for. I can find the unusual brand; buy carrots singly; get my important soup-making ingredients--and more. In spring/summer, there are nice herb and veggie seedlings available. The story of how Glut came to be is very interesting; the staff and volunteers who ensure that Glut keeps chugging along are to be applauded (see website). I was chatting with the cashier here about enjoying the price of their charcoal tablets. I have to use them to burn for spiritual uses. I was saying how I'm happy that they were affordable (Im going through personal financial issues). Yes Market charges way more and he (I think African and has a short cut) said he would raise the price of them. They were 1.99 and my last visit they were raise to $2+! There have been several uncomfortable incidences that I've had with him and another employee there. He asked me if I needed a ride, I declined for safety reasons! During the course of this pandemic I have been doing a lot of shopping a Asian and Central American markets, avoiding the chains to stay away from the crowds and so that I can experiment with the different curries, sauces and veggies. Another thing that I have been doing more is shopping at organic markets and Glut is one of my new favorites. Though things are different, Glut fits perfectly in a community holistic and healthful community. I enjoy making smoothies and like the selection of fresh vegetables, nuts, seeds and powdered herbs and roots that are perfect for this endeavor. I also enjoy the locally produced juices that are sold here. Shop here (& Local Farmer's Markets), instead of Corporate Grocery Stores, it will change your life. Their Slogans are: "Food For People Not Profit since 1969" & "Still Funky, Still Cheap." ~ This place is a non-profit, Worker-Owned, Co-op. There are 13 owner/employees, who all pay themselves $12hr, and with the help of paid volunteers, manage to provide an Oasis of Affordable & Healthy Food options in an otherwise Food Desert. It doesn't get more anti-establishment than this. ...This Place ROCKS!!! If, when you shop for groceries, you are not in a hurry, and you like to bring your own bags, mason jars, and other bulk containers to be refilled for cheap, and you aren't looking for meat (they don't sell meat), but you love refilling your spice jars for pennies, your rice, beans, nuts, dried fruits, honey, grains, Tofu's, Equal Exchange Coffee, Grind Your own Peanut/Almond Butter!, etc, etc. Then this is the place for you! - It's like stepping back in time. There should be a Grocery store like this one in every neighborhood! ...And there used to be! It's a completely different experience, with different options, from Corporate Grocery stores (including the fancy healthier ones). Lastly, Community Resources like Glut only exist with our support. A great local co-op and long-standing independent business in the heart of Mount Rainier. I support and highly recommend supporting this store. Unfortunately, I won't be returning because of a bad experience with an individual employee who was publicly and unnecessarily rude to my 73-year-old mother, who was visiting me from out of town in March 2021. She had just been vaccinated and it was the first time we'd seen each other/first time I'd seen or hugged family in a year. This experience made for a sheisty first day together, when all I wanted to do was honor my mother and be a good host to her. She didn't deserve to be yelled at and disrespected by a woman half her age to whom she'd done nothing but say hello and smile as we entered the store. I want to encourage others to support Glut, especially in these difficult pandemic times. But I also want you, Glut, to know why I won't be returning. Love, health and success to your business and staff, sincerely. (For more background, my mom had slightly stepped out of line at checkout, and therefore technically wasn't following Covid rules; it was an honest mistake and everyone in line at the time was confused because it had ended up running in two different directions. She hadn't been rude to anybody, she was masked, and she was being respectful of Covid norms and of others in every other way possible. My husband and I have been here twice after returning from a trip to Minneapolis, where food co-ops are grand and ubiquitous. Here in DC (or the greater DC area), such places are hard to find. My husband researched and found Glut, and we're so happy we did This is one of the few groceries where you can get dozens of bulk items - oats, grains, pastas, nuts/seeds, etc - at reasonable prices (cheaper than Whole Foods, wooo!). We have stocked up on their oats...you can clearly see and taste a difference between these oats and the ones you buy at a regular grocery store. Olive oil (and a few other oils) are also sold in bulk. Economic and environmental win! There is a good selection of organic and local produce, honey, teas, herbs, etc. Don't miss the eggs! Pasture-raised eggs are the highest quality, higher than cage free...you can't get that at most grocery stores. You pay more, but if you know you are going to use the eggs in the next few days or week, get a carton that is closer to the expiration date - it will be discounted (like $2/dozen 3-4 days before expiration date). We go through a ton of eggs in our house so that is a total steal for us, and the quality is unparalleled. Barely expired produce is also sold at a discount. This is such a wonderful alternative to what most stores do - simply chuck it and move on. This produce can still be used if you take a little bit more time with preparation, or can be fed to animals, etc. They clearly want to see less food waste and are helping to facilitate that movement, even in small steps. The store is small and feels cramped, and it can smell a little funky. But we've had really great experiences with the helpful staff. We're so glad Glut is so close to DC, and we're happy to have this in our rotation of food supply stores. read more

I love Glut. It's small and you definitely can't get everything you need here, but it's great if you live nearby or need a few of the specialty items they offer. If you are looking for bulk items (beans, nuts, etc.) and specialty herbs and supplements, this is your place. I like to pop-in when I'm in the neighborhood, just to see what they have, and pick up Rancho Gordo beans and their smoked maple syrup. Service is friendly and very helpful. read more

I guess because the produce and foods are supposed to be mostly organic and I believe plant-based, everything seems pretty expensive in comparison to the GMO stuff that I usually buy. If you want to buy all-vegetarian, cheap, bulk groceries with loud reggae playing in the background, this is your place. If you're asking "where is Mount Ranier?", as I did even having lived and worked in several places in and around DC, it's just northeast of the border off of Rhode Island Ave, and nowhere near the Metro. Other drawbacks include the lack of bar codes on items; it can take a while to check out when there's only one counter and the prices are being typed in manually. It's not as clean as most supermarkets, and I'd check expiration dates if I were you. Parking is on the street and is limited. Also, I did find one noodle package with shrimp in it. The upsides, however, are large. An enormous selection of bulk grains, legumes, dried fruits, flours etc. at low low prices, as well as quite a few milk substitutes, sauces, and gluten-free offerings. Their produce selection is small, but it at least looks like good stuff. I worried it might be cash only, but they do take credit. It's mostly food; if you're looking for supplements and herbal products or health and beauty this isn't the place. But if you want healthy, cheap food, it definitely is. read more

I was looking for a specific vegan cheese that the vendor's store locator said would be here. I tried calling 4 times over the span of 1 hour (9:30 to 10:30 AM). The first three times, the phone rang for about 2 minutes until the call was disconnected. The 4th time, there was a sound like the phone was disconnected. I decided to make the 40 minute drive anyway because of the great reviews here talking about their big variety. I figured that even if I didn't find the specific cheese I was looking for, I might find another cheese that was worthwhile. Their cheese refrigerator was hidden in the back of the store and appeared to be quite empty. I asked the ladies chatting back there if they had any other cheese from this brand because Glut's website said to ask them about it. The ladies shook their head and continued their conversation. My experience plus the annoyance of parking will likely deter me from wanting to visit this store again. This is in comparison to Root: the other store that was supposed to have this specific cheese, but did not. However, Root was very well stocked with all variety of vegan cheese and related products. When asked about their stock, they offered to order in for me. Unfortunately, they only order in packs of 6 which is much more than I was expecting to buy. read more

Cashiers are slow and the music can be loud but they do have a great bulk section and you get the feeling they are not all about making a buck. It is in Mt. I think is one of my new favorite food co-ops (after Riverwest Co-op in Milwaukee and the 4th Street Food Co-op in Manhattan). They have a great selection of products, affordable prices, and a very friendly, knowledgeable membership base that runs the store. There were tons of beautiful bulk spices, seeds, teas, nuts, and grains I wanted to buy, but I was only in town for a couple days so I got some organic plums, delicious vegan cake (from Sweet and Natural next door), and a very tasty vegan pizza pocket which I think is made by a local business. Way to go, Glut! I will definitely make a point of stopping here every time I'm in DC. read more

Pretty sure this is built on a Ley line. Magical it is. The #1 thing I miss about living in DC, well technically PG County. Way more than just a grocery store. Hands down THE BEST organic food, great music, amazing vibe (shout out to Ziah!!!), all around good, good people and GREAT prices. The real deal as they say. Well, I have a soft spot for food co-ops and their ilk. And thus I love Glut for all its earthy-crunchy, diversity affirming, minor fruit fly infesting gloriousness! Plus, its location is wedged between a respectable residential neighborhood and a less respectable area of Rhode Island Ave (though recently much improved -- on my last visit there were barely any bail bond businesses, though the funky liquor store is still there.) Seriously, this is a very well-intentioned and worth supporting little business in a neighborhood that is in the midst of transformation and always interesting to visit. Still funky, still cheap! that's been their moto for as long as I can remember. I've lived near this place for almost 20 years now. It's already here for a long time even then. Most of the places around the glut come and go but Glut keeps on going. Prices on everything are great. Lot's of bulk items and good spices. Easy relaxed atmosphere. Some may think it's too funky but they don't claim to be slick. They don't have a huge selection on produce but a lot of it is local and or organic. You can grind your own peanut butter, fill up a jar with honey, and get your fresh cheese from the back fridge. They have fresh bread too or you can buy the day old bread and get a break on the price. It's a lot like those old food co-ops from the 70s (I'm dating myself) but you don't need to work there to get the great prices. These days though it is tough for me to get there much, they open a bit to late and close too early. * the only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. read more

I've been going to this coop for twenty years or more. Until recently, my experiences have been overall extremely positive. However, almost everyone working there has terrible customer service skills. Rudeness is the norm for many employees, who would be fired quickly for such behavior. One can only hope the ambience improves, but unless the coop considers this an important aspect of hiring-and keeping employees, I doubt it. Glut is a big reason why I love living in Mt. Rainier. A local worker-owned and operated cooperative since 1969, Glut is a place I can feel good about supporting. Glut offers a number of foods in bulk (various kinds of rice, dry beans, flour, granola, salt, sugar, etc.) and they are happy to let you use your own reusable container to buy bulk products--you just have to weigh your containers first. They carry local milk from Trickling Springs Creamery, local bulk organic tofu from Twin Oaks, local produce from Tuscarora Organic Growers, baked goods from Firehook, and a variety of packaged and frozen foods, personal care and nutritional products. They also carry the local-est ice cream you can get--from Island Style, down the street (but you might as well just go down there yourself). The prices are comparable to Whole Foods, if not much better in some cases. Glut does have some drawbacks. It's all vegetarian, which can be considered a plus or a minus, but it does mean that you know what you're getting. It's a small place and sometimes they can get very crowded. There isn't much parking (but you can ride your bike, walk or take any of the 80-buses up Rhode Island Ave). They also don't often have some items you can buy at a larger grocery store, such as paper towels. We find that we can get most of what we need at Glut and the farmer's market, and the rest with a monthly stop at MOM or Trader Joe's. read more

Since moving to the neighborhood, I have found myself here getting all my organic veggies, teas, nuts, lentils, beans, tahini, and grains. I used to trek to whole foods but this place is less crowded and less expensive. In addition, the produce is local. Everyone knows that I am a sucker for organic produce,so I'm always on a hunt for produce for the week. If you need anything, the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. One con- definitely check expiration dates on items. Overall, I truly enjoy shopping here, and I super thankful that Glut's is close to my apartment. read more

I like this store mainly because it's close to home...otherwise I probably wouldn't go out of my way to get groceries there. My main issue with Glut is that the fruit selection is very poor. Last time I went there were no apples at all. The time before that there were lots of apples, but almost all of them looked like they had been dropped multiple times and kicked around a bit. There was also only 1 grapefruit and maybe 3 pears. The prices are fairly high for everything except the nuts and dried fruit which are priced really well compared to other organic food stores. The place is pretty dirty and not set up very well. They also don't seem to have any effective way of labeling the different products (that I noticed). The first time I shopped there I went up to the counter to pay but ended up having to run around the store about 8 times in order to tell the cashier the exact name of many of my items so she could figure out the price. I never feel like I find everything I need here. The good side: Again, good prices on nuts/dried fruit/some other bulk items. They have a large selection of spices. They have machines where you can make your own almond butter and peanut butter. (I've never actually used them, but the concept is very appealing to me.) read more

If you want to get away from corporate grocery places and support something local, drive or bike up to Mt. Rainer to find a whole strip of locally owned stores on 34th Street. Mt. Rainer is just over the NE border of DC if you go up Rhode Island Ave. Glut is a worker owned cooperative so you don't have to buy shares in it to shop there or get discounts. Glut is vegetarian so you won't find any meat there either. They have a good selection of mostly local produce and is a good alternative if you don't want to join a CSA. They won't have everything you might want but I like to just go see what they have and then make a meal out of it. I also love that most things are the same price if not cheaper than Whole Foods. Glut is small and you bag your own stuff. I just love the local feel and I'll never have to stand in a long line in Whole Foods unless I want some beef. read more

Then please or helpful if you go on the right day you might even be able to get something on there discounted rack today I got a 1.50 organic avocado so I know what I'm having for lunch today. I come mostly for their nuts they have a great Curry cashew that I love. Also you can buy broken cashews at a discount. Grind your own peanut or almond butter! I love this place. Its all earthy and organic. Plenty of people with natural hair. Reggae music playing in the background. It is really cool! I started coming here again during the recent peanut butter scare because I remembered I could grind my own PB here. Now, I take my own containers and fill 'em up with PB or Almond Butter as needed! There are plenty of other products here as well. From tea and grains, to sandwiches with fillings (I'm sorry to admit I'm too chicken to try). But I love this place! If you drive, take some coins to feed the meters. Take your own cloth/reuseable bag to stow your purchases in. And most of all, take an open mind if you're going to try one of those sandwiches. read more

If you live in Mount Rainier or the surrounding areas, Glut is amazing. All organic, all vegetarian (which as other posters note - is either great or not great depending on your culinary preferences), and often super-cheap. Way cheaper than Whole Foods or Yes, and more local to boot. Staff is a mix of volunteers and full-time folks, and they know the inventory very well - to be honest. I buy most of my stuff here because of the proximity to home, but know that some things are especially cheap at Glut (bulk foods, cheese, and spices are among these). Others are reasonably competitive with your other local markets. This is a community hub and the reason a lot of people locate to this area (myself included), so it's a community hub as well. This is a great place for organics. I've found those hard to find spices, organics, and herbals at very reasonable prices. I really like the bulk items since I'm usually looking for just enough to make a specific meal or want to try something out before committing to a whole box. Horrible customer service. I just moved here from CA and wanted to shop at a coop because I used to be part of one myself. Folks working there act like your asking the dumbest questions. They assume everyone who walks in there knows exactly where things should be and how they operate. Maybe I'm an airhead but I couldn't find any procedures for how to navigate the bulk herbs area and I was too anxious to ask anyone because they're so rude! My second and final time there the cashier was raising her voice at me because I didn't know the prices of my tomatoes. I understand needing prices on bulk items but produce as well? I messed up the price of my smoked paprika and the cashier got all upset thinking I was trying to scam... the energy of this store is SO OFF and it honestly makes sense because the motto is "people over profit" but the only berries they sell are DRISCOLL'S, a berry company with a very well known history of human rights violations against their farm workers, particularly wage theft and sexual assault.
