Even though I often choose self-checkout for speed, I decided to go through the regular checkout line and I'm so glad I did, because I had the pleasure of meeting Kiara. I purchased abquarter pound of wild blueberry granola, and vegetable chips mix. There is a sushi section, and believe it or not ready-made lunch sandwiches. I purchased a turkey croissant sandwich to eat for lunch. I couldn't resist a Kioa cold brew coffee as well. I especially like the authentic peanut butter machine, where you can make your own. Everything is totally awesome about this store, and I do believe it's even more affordable than the big chain organic grocery store.

However it is somewhat more expensive for the average products like orange juice and milk. The larger grocery chains have better prices overall because they can buy their products wholesale for much less than a small grocery store such as this one. The shopping experience and the interior of the store itself is nearly identical as to what you would find in Mexico or Latin America. They have a decent meat and seafood section, and they also have the most basic produce items. The times that I have come here we're to purchase only a few items. Today I purchased a bag of oranges, and a half gallon of milk.

I've been a loyal Giant customer for over 15 years, but what happened to me on Sunday, July 6th…read morearound 11:30 AM at the Columbia Heights location was humiliating, unsettling, and completely unacceptable. After shopping at several nearby stores, I walked into Giant to look for a specific item. I was carrying a reusable tote and a Target bag filled with clearly labeled groceries from Lidl. Not finding what I needed, I exited through the self-checkout area -- the only way out -- when an employee loudly yelled, "Stop him!" I was stunned. A security guard stopped me and questioned me about my bags, asking for a receipt for items that clearly weren't from Giant. I was then surrounded by multiple staff members and treated with suspicion, hostility, and outright disrespect. There was no apology -- just defensiveness, even after it was obvious I had taken nothing. When I asked for the names of the staff involved or how to contact corporate, I was told I "didn't need to know their names" and was labeled "hostile" just for speaking up. This experience felt like racial profiling. It was demeaning, unprovoked, and unnecessary. Even after calling corporate, I was only offered an apology -- no effort at true accountability or meaningful resolution. I understand retail theft is a real issue, but this was handled in a completely inappropriate way. You don't accuse, intimidate, and surround paying customers without cause -- and then expect them to return like nothing happened. As someone who's spent thousands of dollars at Giant over the years, I now feel unsafe and unwelcome. Giant needs to do better -- for all its customers.

That's not why I'm writing, however. I recently discovered that the market does Ethiopian takeout and catering. I ordered it today for the first time, and was very impressed. I got the kitfo and the veggie combo, and it was all much more flavorful than I have ever had at restaurants in DC and elsewhere--and very reasonably priced. I'm very, very happy that this is so close to my place--I think I'm going to be ordering from here a lot!

There's about 6 to 8 parking spots along the building, fairly easy to access if turning off of Blair or 4th. The store front & building paint are in good repair. The lady I met & her staff (super helpful & friendly) were busy stocking, organizing, & also putting up this excellent display in the liquor area for the holidays. They have a massive wine & beer selection as well (not pictured). She said she has been in charge for about one year now & her focus has been on making the store clean, well-organized, and with a great variety of selection. I frequent liquor stores for wines, whiskies, & IPAs so I've seen the gamut of what's on offer in the DMV area & I can say S&S is the best organized & stocked that I've seen. On this visit, I was able to pick up two Irish whiskies I've not seen anywhere else, one being for my friend who I think will be pleased. I'll be back over to S&S!
