I've known about this store for a while but hadn't had the opportunity to stop by until today. Needing a holiday gift for a friend who loves Irish whisky, I dropped in as it was on my way from an appointment. There's about 6 to 8 parking spots along the building, fairly easy to access if turning off of Blair or 4th. The store front & building paint are in good repair. The lady I met & her staff (super helpful & friendly) were busy stocking, organizing, & also putting up this excellent display in the liquor area for the holidays. They have a massive wine & beer selection as well (not pictured). She said she has been in charge for about one year now & her focus has been on making the store clean, well-organized, and with a great variety of selection. I frequent liquor stores for wines, whiskies, & IPAs so I've seen the gamut of what's on offer in the DMV area & I can say S&S is the best organized & stocked that I've seen. On this visit, I was able to pick up two Irish whiskies I've not seen anywhere else, one being for my friend who I think will be pleased. I'll be back over to S&S! read more

This store is next door to Takoma Wellness on Blair Road NW. One of the most well-stocked wine and liquor store in the area and the prices are reasonable. They carry hard to find items like Blackberry Crown Royal and I love them for that ! read more

Just checked out their reopened location and it's far better then the old iteration. Bigger, newer, and a better selection all around. They have a great wine selection with many different things to try. The prices are about the same as anywhere else so I know I won't get ripped off here. The beer selection is solid, but they don't really carry much speciality stuff. They mostly have the known brands. The liquor seems to be all the stuff you would want. I wish they had more info on the wines, suggestions, or something to help you pick out new stuff. Always nice to get a recommendation when there are hundreds of options. Overall it's a great place to stock up. read more

Great addition to the Takoma DC area. It's right by Takoma Station and very convenient in the neighborhood as there is no other liquor store that is within a quick walking distance. They have a wide variety of selections of wine and liquor for decent prices. So thankful that there is finally a full wine, beer and liquor store in the area . read more

So, I had gone by after work one night just to pick a few things up and the costumer service here was absolutely TERIBBLE!!! The cashier clerk was horrible and not to mention their prices are crazy and down right criminal for a bottle of liquor! This place must be under new management, because I used to come here a few years ago and was always welcomed with open arms and was treated with the utmost respect as a costumer. Instead I was followed around the store by the clerk (because i assume he thought I was stealing) and was told "if I don't like the price then leave" I've never been so disrespected as a shopper before and I've worked as a clerk myself for YEARS!!! sad to say that this place clearly does not care about their clientele. read more

Austere location, ok selection. Most of the hard stuff is kept behind the register. If you don't immediately know what you want, it may feel weird to stand in front of the register while you're making a decision. The staff are really nice & helpful. I mistakenly selected a bottle of wine from their half-off rack--not my best move. I'm assuming they are all old. This is definitely one of my favorite things about moving to Takoma Park. :) It's your standard liquor store, nothing too special. Prices are reasonable (sometimes really cheap deals, sometimes slightly over-priced items - all-in-all, though, you'll get a decent deal). Selection is good. The wine selection is surprisingly large (that is, it's a pretty large selection for an otherwise seemingly small, grimy liquor store). The beer selection is good - they have lots refrigerated. The staff are helpful and generally friendly. My favorite thing about it, though, is the Takoma Mixer. Get a sealed box of 24 beers for $24! It's a pre-mixed selection of beers - you never know what you are going to get. Usually you'll get 1 or 2 complete six packs and then 2-3 bottles each of other types. All they promise is that it won't be super cheap commercial beer and it won't be all of the same thing. If you aren't sure exactly what you want and don't want to get a 6 or 12 pack of just one thing and don't want to spend a fortune trying new beers, this is the way to go. It's only $1 a beer! It's been a great way to deal with my indecisive nature and to introduce me to new beers. read more

This Historic Takoma liquor store has reopened after 3 years. It appears to have at the very least doubled its inventory. Hooray for us.

Ugliest building, nicest people. This store has a pretty good selection, and pretty average prices (maybe a little on the high side). But they make a big effort to recommend good stuff, and they have one thing you just can't beat-they let dogs inside! We love them-far better than the safeway down the street. read more

Conveniently located right across the street from Takoma Metro, I hit this spot every coupla days on my way home. Decent, not great, selection of beers, but better than and similarly priced to any other such place in the direct vicinity (Morris Miller, 4U, Safeway on Piney Branch, the DLC in Silver Spring). Better selection of wine than any of those places, all the booze you would expect. Occasionally have certain items on special, usually at pretty good prices. Also sells Lottery tickets, some mixers, and smokes. Staff is generally helpful and friendly. Only bad thing is the parking lot. It's tiny and usually pretty sketchy to get in and out of (especially on a Friday or Saturday night), as they share the tiny lot with a couple of other businesses (Grand China, and whatever's next to them), and it's located at kind of a weird intersection. Fortunately I'm close enough to walk there, but for those that drive, you've been warned. My liquor store of choice. read more

A booze store is a booze store right? Generally I can agree with that statement, but on occasion the selection and or staff of a place can elevate or eliminate an establishment from that label. S&S, despite is rough looking exterior, is a great find for anyone with a taste for microbrews, atypical wines and premium liquors. The staff is always at the ready with great suggestions and have yet to fail on a recommendation yet. The best part is not only do they have a wonderful microbrew variety in 6-pack AND case...they also have it on the shelf OR cold!! Its one of the few places I can send my fiancee who is not a wine drinker at all without fear that he will come home with a bottle of Boones Farm. Well worth a trip out of your way! read more

This place is great! The beer selection is spectacular, especially for a store of its size. Their selection of ports is second to none.I love this place. The owner is responsive and a great guy, and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Whether you're looking for a new IPA to try, or a spectacular scotch, this is the place to go in Takoma Park. And don't miss out on Jacob, the bartender across the street at Takoma Crossing (same owner) , the best bar and bartender in the neighborhood, and maybe the world. read more

This place has a very solid selection of excellent beer. By far the best within easy driving distance of the Takoma area. The problem is that they greatly overcharge for what they sell. I've seen six packs here for $16 that I can get for $11 at other shops in the D.C. area. Even the commonly available beer - stuff that can be bought at the nearby Safeway, like Shiner and New Castle - is going to be a couple bucks more here than elsewhere in the area. The liquor and wine selections are nothing special, go elsewhere for that. (Montgomery County liquor stores have great pricing and great selections.) The people can be very friendly and helpful (if, occasionally, a little too attentive and obviously high). The owner, a Sikh with a big bushy beard and turban, also runs Cedar Crossings and is a heck of a lot of fun. They are open on Sundays which is good. Go here if you need convenient access to an IPA you haven't tried yet or an excellent barleywine. If you're looking for decent prices or want to stock the liquor cabinet, go elsewhere. read more

I go here fairly often as it's in the neighborhood. Staff has always been friendly. One of the guys (the owner?) would regularly offer an on-the-spot deal for various bottles or open a bottle for a tasting. Nice touch. But the variety of liquor leaves a bit to be desired. They certainly do cover the basics and try to offer a couple of options in various price ranges. But you aren't yet going to find stuff like creme de violette, Luxardo, or Dolin vermouth here. Seems like they'd be willing to stock it but someone's gotta ask first, I guess. My main grip with the shop is that I've watched beer prices rise to nearly unreasonable levels. I can think of at least a couple of brands that I can go by at Franklin's in Hyattsville for $8.50 and yet they are more than $12 here. I find myself even hesitating to by a 6 of Newcastle b/c they prices seem too high. So, I find myself coming here less and less, unfortunately. And the last few times I've gone in, there's been girls trying to get people to do shots of crappy liquor in the middle of the day. Meh. But again, nice guys and not a bad store. They just need to rethink their beer prices and maybe expand the liquor selection a bit. And the dumbass who rated this place 1 star b/c it wasn't open on a Sunday? Numbnuts, what liquor store is open on Sunday in DC? None of them. read more

I go here a lot. When I moved to Takoma DC from Mt. Pleasant a year ago I was shocked at the prices. The excellent beer selection is $1-$2 more expensive per 6 pack that in Mt. P. Over time I have realized that S&S is on an island. There is nothing approaching it in in the area. I'm talking a 1 mile radius. I can't imagine living where I do without them. They do a great job. I especially like all the Great Lakes that they carry. Almost everything they put out is amazing and S&S carries 3 or 4 at all times, including seasonal beers. That deserves extra points. The one thing I will say as a negative is be wary of old beer. They have a lot of old beer and often package in the sealed boxes that you can buy at a reduced price. I bought 1 in the summer that was full of porters and stouts that had been winter seasonals. read more

This is usually the only place I go for adult beverages. They rotate their six-pack selection often and do a good job of offering plenty of micro as well as macro-brews. They have a pretty good wine selection and if you're in the mood for something different, they're outgoing to suggest something. Often they've even given a discount off the price tag. They're liquor selection is good as well and always stocked. If you want something they don't happen to have or don't usually carry, they have no problem ordering it for you or setting aside a bottle for you and calling you up when it arrives. Singh is a great owner, helpful and talkative, as are all the guys working there. read more

The selection is great--for wine, micro-brews and hard liquor alike. And the owner is knowledgeable and helpful, and hires staff who are equally knowledgeable and helpful. For my Bell's and Brewer's Art obsession, and for the excellent range of wines, this place can't be beat. Mr. Singh has been pointing me toward good buys on wine for over 10 years. Their amazing friendliness toward dogs (biscuits!) and kids (lollipops!) is just an extra bonus. Love this place. read more

A very cool and unassuming liquor shop right by the Takoma Station. Three things make this shop really stand out to me and made it my favorite store for booze. First, the staff are helpful and honest. they don't try to upsell you or b.s. you with pretentious reviews (like many of the "fancy" liquor shops in the area. Second, they have a good selection of discounted large-format fancy beers. Some are past their time, but like 90% are an amazing deal. Finally, they sell mystery mixed cases of beer! These cases are always a good deal, sometimes you find outrageously good stuff too in them. Buy a mystery case and pretend it's Craft Beer Christmas! read more

The place is over priced and the staff is extremely rude behind your back. When you walk in you they start saying very disrespectful/vulgar things about your gender (things they want to do to you), race, age etc in Spanish. My issue is, if you hate customers that much, then don't have a store. If you don't believe me, go with a Spanish speaker and they will tell you exactly what these people think about you. read more

my neighborhood go-to spot for liquors and microbews. they have a nice selection of brews, rotating on a regular basis so they can offer more choices throughout the year. my favorite purchase, though, is their mixed case lot of brews, from microbreweries and foreign breweries. You never know what you are going to get because they are closed, taped-shut cardboard cases, and meant to be a surprise offering. i have bought over a dozen of these cases and have yet to be disappointed. sometimes i even find brews in them that are worth $4 - $6 per bottle, which i'd never buy otherwise. these are special treats, and i enjoy trying out the brews from all over the world in this manner.
