I purchased a 6-pack of Six Point beer, which I buy in Brooklyn for $14-16, and didn't realize I was charged $22.00 until I was handed my receipt. I asked if a mistake was made, and was told it was the actual price. The cashier refused to refund or exchange the 6-pack, 10 seconds after I purchased it. She said I'd have to come back when the manager was there and ask him. Are you kidding me? Horrible prices and even worse service. Teach your cashiers how to be polite and to refund their customers. Some days I am happy I venture forth from home. Today was one of those days. I may be the only American male not in a coma that has no clue who is playing in the game tonight (Super Bowl Sunday). Social derision aside, there was household interest in finding some new sipping items. In comes Beer, Wine & Co on Wisconsin Ave. Thankfully, the Sunday drive was quick and uneventful. They occupy a corner location with the shop entrance at the intersection corner of the building. I was warmly greeted and proceeded to describe what we were looking for: ports and sherries. Oh yeah, and maybe a Trappist ale for me. Not only did I find an amazing Sherry, but I was even invited to consider a white port (which I am happy to say found its way home as well.) Run, do not walk, and grab a bottle of the Pedro Ximenez Alvear Solera. Beard of ZEUS!!! The layers of plum and prune, the intoxicating suggestion of honey, and the floral notes of Madagascar vanilla and the faintest hint of something verdant and arboreal. At a shade shy of $32...I have ZERO complaints. These folks have earned a happy new customer for sure! read more

We witnessed a horrifying incident last night. The man working the cashier was berating and verbally abusing a man who was trying to stock up on one kind of beer and asking for assistance with getting more. Apparently, the cashier was enraged that he asked while he was checking out another customer. The cashier was saying violent things like "I will kill you" "I will fuck you up" and insinuating that the man was using fake currency (he fulfilled his purchase anyway so it must not have been an actual concern). It was a constant stream of verbal abuse while this man bought his beer. The man who was being verbally abused appeared to be a Black immigrant who did not understand all of the verbal abuse being slung at him because of a language barrier (if he did understand then he must be the calmest person on Earth because he didn't respond at all other than to continue his purchase). Looking at other reviews it appears this isn't the first instance of customer discrimination. I didn't know what to do and was afraid to speak up and have the violent language directed at me and that is not how anyone should ever feel while attempting to make a purchase. I will not be returning to this business ever again and we have been consistent customers for years due to the proximity. Please take your business where customers are not discriminated against and verbally accosted. There are plenty of places in the area that are better. read more

Every time I come here and happen to need a suggestion they do a great job. The selection of both wine and beer is lovely. 3 stars because some of the male employees only tend to interact with male customers, ignoring or having an unequal courtesy to women (especially POC). I've noticed it in general, but especially when m'lady comes in with me. She says the two times she's been she's never been greeted, asked if she needed help, or anything. Example that finally got me to leave a review: We just went in tonight to pick up some beer for the evening, the gentleman at the counter greeted neither of us, but was enthusiastic in greeting the 'bros' that entered shortly after. It was m'lady's turn to get beer, but he only spoke with me asking for MY card, and was far less pleasant than what I usually encounter here. An uncomfortable amount of patriarchy here, as after he took her card continued only to interact with me. We stood for a moment inside after purchasing to wait for an Uber and he seemed to be confused/frustrated we were still there. Usually at beer/wine shops (including here), the person buying gets carded, not the whole party. That's usually only liquor stores that do that. We were both asked for IDs, said 'bros' behind us were not all carded. So there is inconsistency and things occurring differently depending on who is at the counter. Everyone that walks through the door is a potential customer and deserves the same treatment regardless of race, gender, identity etc. EDIT: Lowered to 2 stars due to the ale we purchased yesterday (Saxo) being spoiled. Rather large flaky yeast sediments and bubbly head uncharacteristic of this ale. $25 for 4 bottles of an ale I love and we couldn't enjoy. :( read more

This bottle shop is the best in Bethesda. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. The selection is really diverse and has a great balance between local breweries and imports. Prices vary but for the location and selection are definitely fair. Now the staff is A+. I don't know what the other reviews are talking about when they say they don't talk to women. My wife and I frequent this store and they are always helpful, engaging in good conversation and are never demeaning. They now have taps and sell growlers. A new boutique wine shop just opened in Bethesda, Maryland, and if they don't change their attitude near future, it will soon go the way of the clay amphora. The Beer, Wine & Co. (located at the 7029 Wisconsin Avenue in the heart of Bethesda) is the sister project of the Wine, Food & Co. restaurant across the street. From the moment you walk in the door, you get the feeling that it could be something special. The only problem is, the customer is not anything special. I have now had the unfortunate opportunity to visit this shop not once, not twice, but THREE times and have yet to get anyone behind the counter to even acknowledge my existence. On my last visit, there were three - count 'em, three - employees behind the counter watching -and I am not making this up - women's platform diving on the TV! During my "alone time" I had a chance to peruse the selection of beer and wine on the shelves. While the wine inventory was ordinary (but fairly priced for a Montgomery County retailer), the beer selection was other-worldly, with choices ranging from cool domestic labels to exotic international choices. Oh, how I wished someone would have sold a few to me! But the problem is that you can't get anyone to help you! And, judging from what I overheard on one visit (I believe it was my second time in), I'm not sure I'd want anyone's help! I was in the shop for ten minutes - being ignored - when a woman walked in and asked for help. She was looking for a red wine to go with cheese. Easy enough. But the salesperson had not a clue as to where to begin. Oy! He asked her what country she wanted to try. She said she did not care, but it had to go with cheese. He asked her what type of grape she wanted to try. She said she did not care, but it had to go with cheese. So he recommended a Chianti from Italy. Now, maybe there is something about this Chianti that I don't know, but with so many other reasonable selections to choose from on the shelf, it seemed like an odd recommendation. Maybe the reason they don't offer to help customers is because they don't know what they're doing (yet). Okay - so I decide that it is time to let management know. I walk across the street to the sister venture and ask to speak to a manager there so that they can pass along my concerns to the non-existent management at the wine shop. She took my information down and said she would pass it along to one of the owners. Sure enough, I get a call from Carlos an hour later. When I explained what happened, he merely said - and again, I am not making this up - "We don't like to be too pushy." Fair enough, but to completely ignore a customer on three separate occasions isn't not being pushy - it's being aloof. What's more, he explained that he was the manager and one of the owners, and - you're going to love this - he was in the store during my last visit. He was one of the guys who was watching TV! Once Carlos figured out that I knew that he was part of the problem, he abruptly hung up. Weird. I may not be the biggest name in the wine world, but I do know my way around a wine shop and I can tell you that ignoring customers and making questionable wine recommendations is not a great recipe for success... If you find yourself in Bethesda and you're in need of a bottle or two of wine, check out Cork and Fork around the corner. The staff is not only knowledgeable (the owners are former winemakers from France), but they are eager to help. Love this place! I hope it gets tons of business. They carry Lindemans Framboise Lambic which is sometimes a pain to find. The guys in the shop were super helpful with recommendations and very friendly. I'm sure if they didn't carry something you were looking for, they would look into getting it in. It's a really unique looking store from both the outside and the inside. The staff is friendly and are always willing to help you if you have any questions. While I ended up just purchasing a six-pack of woodchuck hard cider, their selections of beer definitely is one of the best in the Bethesda/Chevy Chase area. I went just this past Sunday evening and I like their hours. The beers are all refrigerated! So cold for enjoyment right away! If you're looking for water or red bull, etc, they have a little section just for small random items you might be looking for. I haven't really bought wine from here, but there seems to be a good selection and my friend has purchased a couple of bottles of wines from here and she seems to keep coming back. This is the best place to get craft/micro brews in Bethesda. I've only been in once but they had a great selection of beer (better than anywhere else by far). They definitely had some stuff that I've never seen before. My girlfriend and I ended up walking away with a sampler 12-pack of Sam Adams IPAs (did you know they make at least 6?) and a six pack of Bud Light Lime-A-Ritas (what can I say, we were curious). There were some other six packs that I would have liked to get too but we were walking so we had to keep it light. I didn't really check out the wine selection but it looked extensive. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and offered some helpful suggestions, especially when it came to serving the Lime-A-Ritas. He seemed pretty knowledgeable about beer in general too. My only complaint would be that it was a little on the pricey side. I guess you need to jack prices up a little bit to make a profit in Bethesda. read more

It's worth going every so often to keep up with their beer and wine tastings! This place has a great selection of beer. They give Total Wine a run for their money. I went into the store looking for a Bruery beer. Whole Foods will usually have 1-2 varieties of their beer, but Beer Wine and Co had at least 5. Pros: Great variety of beer, good selection of refrigerated beers as well. This is the place to go to buy your beer-loving friend a gift. Also they have parking! Nice. Cons: Relatively expensive compared to the Virginia stores I'm used to. read more

Food was good, I just didn't like the service. I was served by a gentlemen who rushed us to order, as we were waiting for our other friends to come. After ordering, we waited about an hour for our food, and my friend waited a little over an hour for their appetizer. The server didn't give us any reason or was to apologetic about it. The server wasn't too attentive to us, I had to constantly ask for water to be refilled. This is actually the 2nd time I had a bad experience with the service here. While visitng DC and staying in Bethesda, my buddy and I were walking from the hotel to Trader Joe's to pick up some staples. To our surprise, they don't sell beer/wine/spirits in grocery stores in MD (wth? This needs to change). While walking back we decided to check out Beer Wine & Co. We were greeted by friendly staff and were directed directed past the swill for the masses to their EXTRAORDINARY selection of East Coast micro offerings. Per his suggestion, we took some Resin IPA (in cans... the way beer needs to be sold imho) and some Exit 5 Triple (I think). Both were amazing! Excellent recommendations. He also said to stop at Church Key in DC if we get the chance. Wow! A+ recommendation. We both loved that place. We came back later in the trip for a couple more suggestions. He opened a can of Guvna and let us sample it before buying. How many stores will open a $5+ can of beer for you to try??? Liked it enough to buy some and the ten fidy imperial stout which was off the chain (10.5 abv). I would say this place is priced just right. It's not BevMo prices, but you will get great service here. If you want Coors Light go somewhere else. Super nice, extremely knowledgeable and great service. I really like this place. read more

When it comes to a knowledgable and attentive staff, this place certainly covers it. With one of the better beer selections in the area, that focuses on mainly micros from all over, the selection is one of a kind. If you sign up for the email list, you get the opportunity to keep up when they do beer tastings from breweries. You pay the most for a place that offers the most, the fact that they get the selection with the way Montgomery County works compared to other counties is a dedication to their persistence. I recommend this to anyone that has a more complex palate thanks to their variety. read more

Call me guilty of another 5 star review. You may ask, does he really mean it? I do. Really. I stop by this shop about every other week and buy a bottle of wine or some craft beer. I really like their in store reviews and ratings of their stock. I'm happy to show up and talk about a particular bottle. Several of the folks there speak with authority about their stock. You can tell they've either memorized the text, or really spent some time with the wine. (could be a very fun part of the job).... The other day I decided to step out of my comfort zone and bought a $15 bottle of oat beer, and was blown away. The description was accurate, and their appreciation for this particular beer was spot on. You may think it's funny and wonder why I'd pay $15 for a bottle of beer, well it was a craft beer, and just that good. Hey you can go to a high end beer restaraunt and pay $50 for a bottle, why not pay $15 at your local shop and drink it at home! Well then that's always been my feeling about hard alcohol too. I buy my scotch at the ABC store, not the bar. None the less, I can't explain other reviewer's expereinces, because every time I've visited the shop, the staff is happy to work with me to find what ever I'm looking for from a cheap large white for a party, to a high end expereince in a bottle. They didn't have sake I needed for a recipe earlier this summer. They told me they would be getting it in several days. Went back the anticipated date of delivery, and they said it didn't come in. Disappointing, but not a big deal. Last night, I pulled in to buy a bottle of wine. A guy in gray jeans wearing a fedora came to my vehicle and started yelling at me: "YOU SEE THAT??? CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT SIGN? WHAT DOES IT SAY???" I was like, whaaaat? I said, "Parking for Beer Wine and Co.?" He said, "YEAH. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS." I said, "Well, that's where I am going. Is that okay?" No response from fedora dude, who was clearly highly agitated. I went into the shop, a bit shaky, in part to get away from the guy, who didn't seem to be fully okay. I got a bottle and nobody was at the register. I called out for assistance to pay to no avail. I then got the sinking realization that fedora dude must be the store employee, who was yelling at customers for driving to the business. I put the wine back and went outside. Guess what? He's out in the parking lot yelling at another poor guy who was trying to go into the shop to buy some beer. Mama ain't got no time for this, and I plan to return to this establishment Never. Went to Lance's - where I should have gone in the first place - and got great service and a bottle I hope my friend will enjoy! read more

I'm updating my review to remark on how the prices for craft beer here are unbelievably high. We're talking over $16 dollars for FOUR-PACKs of Green Flash West Coast IPA (only 7.5 percent ABV) and Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA six-packs...That's ridiculous for these fairly easy-to-find beers-we're talking over $6 more than usual for these beers at stores in DC. This price-gouging holds for almost all brands and bottle-size formats (12 oz. six packs, 22 oz. 'bombers', and 750 mL imports). If you can justifiably drop $20 on a six-pack, go right ahead, but for this beer drinker, Beer Wine and Co.'s pricing is beyond reason. Safe to say I won't be back. read more

I stopped in here for a reasonably priced (read: cheap) bottle of wine to cook with. I didn't expect to find anything cheap in there, but I was in a hurry and it was the closest beer/wine store to me at the time. I like that there's free parking, especially in Bethesda. I looked around a bit and thought I'd found something that would work, and the guy at the counter asked if I needed any help. I told him what I was making and he directed me to a different, slightly more expensive, but better-for-cooking bottle of wine that worked out great. Located on the corner where the paint store used to be at Leland and Wisconsin Ave (where Woodmont crosses Wisconsin), Beer Wine and Co seems to be a retail extension of Food Wine and Co--the highly popular new restaurant near the Bethesda Regal Cinema. These guys don't just sell random items. They know what everyone is looking for. The prices aren't rock bottom, but really good, and the selection is very impressive. I especially liked their collection of beers from Japan and their moderately priced wines of fine quality. I asked if they had case discounts and they said yes. I don't have details, but that is a great starting point as I usually go in with friends on a case purchase, so we will be back. I look for Beer Wine and Co to gobble up the local competition. The staff have been over the top helpful every time I have gone in. I haven't loved everything they recommended, but I would say they do a good job about 80% of the time. They constantly have new beers coming in, and do tastings weekly. Love the beer tasting idea. So often I am hesitant to buy a full 6 pack of something I am iffy on. Love this place. Yes, pricey. But the faces are always familiar (yikes, maybe I go there too often), and the guys are always very helpful without being obnoxious. I saw one reviewer said that they were standoffish, but that couldn't be further from the truth! Walking back to the car, was verbally accosted by the owner of the store, who screamed - truly, screamed! -- at me that parking was only for Beer Wine and Co customers and how DARE I use his lot!!!! I said that I had just been in his store and purchased a bottle and ran next door to pick up takeout. I showed him the bottle I'd just bought from HIS store. He didn't apologize, just kept grumbling loudly that people used his parking lot, and had no right, and yadda yadda yadda on and on. After shopping there for several months. Tonight I experienced racism from the older gentleman clerk. As I entered the store he looked at me and a friend with snide eyes and followed us thru the store. A group of younger guys purchased their alcohol a little before us. He didn't ask either gentleman for their IDs. When it came time for me to purchase he demanded my friend show her ID in order to purchase and snatched my things away from me. He was not only rude he was un welcoming. He has sold liquor to me several times before even once without my ID because I am very frequent and every time I have my friend with me. The store is small, similar to a lot of bottle shops in the area with a decent but uninspiring selection with things that are easily available at top bottle shops in DC and at places like Perfect Pour, Norms, etc. But I do have to mention one thing: the prices. They are completely outrageous. They had 6 packs of Corona for $9 and four packs of Chimay Blanche for over $20. I think the price was even more ludicrous like $38.99 for a four pack of Chimay. I almost laughed out loud. Completely over the top pricing that only someone born yesterday would pay for. They do have mix your own six pack with 21st Amendment singles and the like, but each single is at least $5 so it's going to be a near $30 six pack an then you get a 10% off discount. Whoopie. So...yeah. I see no reason to go here. Props for using ratebeer tags on the beers, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pay triple the price in some cases for normal, easy to get, small format bottles. read more
