I've been a loyal Giant customer for over 15 years, but what happened to me on Sunday, July 6th around 11:30 AM at the Columbia Heights location was humiliating, unsettling, and completely unacceptable. After shopping at several nearby stores, I walked into Giant to look for a specific item. I was carrying a reusable tote and a Target bag filled with clearly labeled groceries from Lidl. Not finding what I needed, I exited through the self-checkout area -- the only way out -- when an employee loudly yelled, "Stop him!" I was stunned. A security guard stopped me and questioned me about my bags, asking for a receipt for items that clearly weren't from Giant. I was then surrounded by multiple staff members and treated with suspicion, hostility, and outright disrespect. There was no apology -- just defensiveness, even after it was obvious I had taken nothing. When I asked for the names of the staff involved or how to contact corporate, I was told I "didn't need to know their names" and was labeled "hostile" just for speaking up. This experience felt like racial profiling. It was demeaning, unprovoked, and unnecessary. Even after calling corporate, I was only offered an apology -- no effort at true accountability or meaningful resolution. I understand retail theft is a real issue, but this was handled in a completely inappropriate way. You don't accuse, intimidate, and surround paying customers without cause -- and then expect them to return like nothing happened. As someone who's spent thousands of dollars at Giant over the years, I now feel unsafe and unwelcome. Giant needs to do better -- for all its customers. read more

This Giant was in route to a local Malaysian restaurant and within a few minutes from a metro station. It is clean, organized and the staff is pleasant. One thing in particular that I loved about this location was the amount of self checkout registers. There is a local Giant near my place that doesn't have any self checkout, so when you find one that does, it's such a major benefit! This store is here and I'm glad that they're here, but it's not my favorite grocery store of all time. I came here because we needed to get a couple of things for a child's birthday party today. This store happened to be the closest to where the party was being held. My first couple of items included three watermelons, a dozen corn on the cobs, and I figured that I would also pick up two dozen apples while I was in the produce section. We also needed a few containers of salad dressing, so I got ranch, creamy Italian, and blue cheese. We had plenty of party favors, including several cases of beer, but we were missing drinks for the kids. I got three cases of Kool-aid jammers, and two 8 packs of cool blue Gatorade. I've lived in Washington, DC for two years. I've been to one Giant, so I can't speak for the whole chain, but to a certain degree, I can. The first year, I saw a store that was cheerful, happy, and filed with service. It was very nice. The second year, the store did an about face. Prices are higher than ever, discounts are less, every employee went from friendly to unpleasant, so much so that if you ask an employee about a product, yo get a rough "I dunno," and they move on. They had a hot bar from 11am - 7pm, and a great salad bar. That was good food. A year ago, the salad bar was permanently closed, and the hot bar serves the same disgusting Chinese food every day at whatever at hours the ladies wish to put the food out. That is an insult to those of us who have a set lunch hour, and we end up getting shafted. Take Christmas: hardly any product was out, some very cheap stuff, no seasonal carols were played on the store radio, and on December 26, EVERYTHING came down, even Christmas drinks. On the 27th, Valentine's Day products were up. Come on, man, it's Christmas! The vegetables for sale are rotten - yes, literally rotten, hidden behind their polished, wax fronts. Finally, for the most part, don't buy ANYTHING that has the Giant label - you're sure to lose. That is a condemnation of the store brand - for what they cost, Giant needs to improve the quality of what they sell on their shelves. As for the local store - management staff change HAD to have occurred last year: their manager now is really, really bad. When service falls off a cliff, go back to management school, or just get out. As for me, a drive to Safeway is worth it. It makes a world of difference. read more

For the pharmacy 10/10 Helpful, fast, applied a coupon saving me over $200 on my prescription. Three young black men behind the counter were knowledgeable, polite and cared. I called on a different day and spoke with a young lady who went the extra mile to try to get my vet on the phone for a question. Highly recommend. read more

This used to be my neighborhood grocery store and the only reason I went was because it's the only large grocery store in that part of Columbia Heights. Before you walk in the store, there are often panhandlers and canvassers, making for an unpleasant experience. The Giant itself often doesn't have items, although I will give it credit for a good selection of Latin American cheeses. The prices are on the expensive side, there are never enough cashiers, and the self-checkout is often not intuitive, requiring help. I would only go if you live in the neighborhood and need groceries. read more

Especially not in this part of town - and it's definitely a beacon in the night and a good place to hang out and grab some food. bought a reasonably priced "lady finger surprise" cake here for a risqué photoshoot. the icing melted almost immediately upon skin contact, which added time pressure to our process and meant the cake lost nearly all structural integrity by the end of the shoot. loath to waste, we sought to repurpose the denatured cake by mixing up the remains, molding them into ballz, and popping them in the air fryer. but they resisted even that and kind of congealed into a viscera-colored smear coated with something that would be generous to call crust. have never seen food do that before. fantastic staff at the bakery read more

Ridiculously incompetent at pickup orders. You respond to the store's email to let them know that you're minutes away, then get there and wait 10, 15, 25, 35 minutes. This has happened twice, and each time I had to go into the store and find someone to get my order filled. Of course, that means it's another 15 minutes before it's ready. The person I find is always apologetic, but I'm done with that place. I will get my pickup orders at another location from now on. read more

This place is fine if you go during off hours. It's just waaaay too crowded during the weekday evening rush or on Sunday nights (when other groceries are also in mad-rush mode). They have a decent selection of most things, and their meat specials (steaks especially) can sometimes be amazing. Some of the multi-grain bread they bake in-house, and that you can get them to cut for you, is very good. The organic produce is also pretty decent. Not as good as Whole Foods, but it also isn't nearly as expensive. Don't park on the street without paying (thinking you'll just be quick at the store) because cops patrol it regularly and you'll likely get a ticket. They have some great prices, but the store is always ridiculously crowded! Today there were no carts available, and I asked a cashier if she could possibly call a manager to help find some carts. She sneered at me. People were standing in the vestibule waiting for carts, and finally when a GIant worker arrived with just about ten carts, they went like hotcakes. I grabbed one, and some older man yelled at me and said he touched it first! What in the world? I felt like I was in Russia when they were rationing items back in the 80's! Was hungry and got an Italian Boars Head sub. The woman had just made it! I got home and it had american cheese on it, despite it saying on the front it would have provolone. blah. This store is dirty and most of the workers really are lame. There are a few nice ones, who are hard to find. It is obvious this store is still so mismanaged. Sketchy. Plenty of homeless folks and drunks hanging around outside. Security and theft issues mean they sometimes restrict entrance/exit to a small door. Selection is good but it's too pricey, particularly for the modest-income clientele. Their machines often do not work, and this is the kind of store where one customer with problems can back up the line. Rooftop parking is helpful but the whole experience isn't too calming. read more

I love this Giant. In the rapidly gentrifying area of U St/Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan in Ward One, upscale grocery stores have been sprouting up like mushrooms at a horse farm's manure bin. Still, their selections tend to be very specialized, leading to several visits to different stores. This Giant store has everything. A bit proletariat, a bit classy, a bit of everything. The management has taken great pains to train and enforce civility and customer service on the part of the staff. Yes, it has a lot of turn over because so many employees get fired for not upholding the standards. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just yesterday, when I needed six different items from the seafood counter, including custom orders, I got top-notch service. In return, I gave the attendant my most profuse thanks for his service and told him that I would give him a good writeup with the store manager, which I promptly did. As I said before, Giant has everything. Plenty of parking, plenty of ethnic foods, plenty of seafood, plenty of vegetables, a HUGE wine selection, and an unbeatable dairy section. Their meats are also extremely good and they have lots of special deals to compliment the customer experience. read more

Updating my review after a run-in with the bakery counter. Went in early Friday evening for a cheapie sheet cake to sing around before a bday turn up. I checked out the selection while an employee took a phone order for about 5 minutes-no hold finger, no eye contact, no acknowledgment. No problem. I get it, this ain't Dean & Deluca. After the call, I got her attention and asked if she could write a message on a cake for me. For all the moans and groans, you'd have thought I'd asked for her last cigarette. "*sigh* You have to purchase these. The baker's gone for the day. *sigh* If you buy it, I guess I'll print on it for you *sigh*" Well damn. Ok. Appreciate you? So I bring the cake back and she takes it behind the counter to write on it. Little did I know she had a serial killer's penmanship. We are in January 21, 2022. I came in the store with WIC check to shop. I am not used to shopping with WIC check, so it took me some quite time to to look for the products that I wanted. On my way to check out, I was asked to go back and change some of the products which do not fully correspond to the description on the WIC check that I had. I came back to the cashier to complete my check out. There was a line on which was an elderly white lady. Even though, another cahier opened to help them check out, she refused to move there and remained alone online. Suddenly she began to curse me out , saying all kind of things on me. she said I must be a thief or I must have been in jail. I had never met her before, she had never known me before. In my frustration and anger, I held myself calm, due to the respect and consideration I have to elderly people. For any reason I cannot disrespect my Mum. Consequently, I could not say anything to that lady regarding her age. And she kept on... But what shocked me most is that the Store Manager ( or the Assistant) , and some Supervisors were around, when she was cursing me out. No body said something! Even the Manager was going back and forth around, without saying a word ! I think his attitude seems to confirm that the lady was right to curse me in the store. The lady then gained more power following me outside, harassing me, persecuting me endlessly until my ride arrived. I will not end this review without mentioning one Supervisor and the cashier who rang me up. They were exceptional. They were patient with me. Though I did not explain it to them, they seemed to know that I am New using the WIC check. They were helpful. Here is my last word with this adage: Do not judge a book by its cover. The content might not be what we thought. I am not evil doer and evil has no color. Unfortunately the Store Manager and some Supervisors bought into what I went through, by their silence. This is a conveniently located grocery store, just a few steps away from the Columbia heights metro and DC USA. Step in and you'll find the produce section straight ahead and the bakery to the left. The produce section is really hit or miss, with many items often missing. The produce is generally very fresh and the prices are right... When items are stocked. In theory, they have quite a few items however the high volume of traffic means that the selection is often very picked over. I've never bought meat here as the store isn't kept clean and the employees are very inattentive. I'd recommend sticking to pre packaged items, produce and, I'd make sure to check the expiration dates on all items. The location never seems to have enough open registers and many of the self checkout kiosks are broken. Lines are often backed up (I've seen them extend to the back of the store at times). Unless you're on foot and you need something immediately, I'd recommend going to the new Safeway on Georgia Ave. It's infinitely nicer and better kept. read more

This grocery store should not be open. They never are fully stocked with standard produce or meats. When you ask for help, no one is willing to help even a store manager. Everyone directs you to another and another and it seems as though everyone in one department doesn't work in that department so you have to wait for the right department person to come around. I was so upset one Saturday night, I called for the manager to ask what would be the right time to shop. There was barely anything and the truth is this the standard at this Giant. What's so irritating is the smell, it always smells like stinky oil fried chicken when you walk in and you walk out smelling like that. This last visit was the worse, no onions, no basil, no broccoli, no lemons and the best part is they had clementines full of fungus! Just gross. I was rather annoyed about going to the store once again it became a bad situation. I didn't really want to stand there for 15 minutes for some old lady to walk down an aisle and try figure out what the hell it was I was trying to buy. But there I was, and then she came back and was like sorry I don't see anything like that. She was like, this is Friday prices change on Fridays, I'm like I don't care the sign said this amount what the hell you talkin about. So I just walked out and went to Harris Teeter which is always a much better store than Giant. No offense to the the woman, but seriously you really need to like figure out what's going on. And if your lead cashier is the one that has to check prices will maybe she should actually knows what's in the damn item is. This is the a reason why I don't shop here it's because of bad service. Which is why I took the extra time to walk down to Harris Teeter where they actually do provide good service, sometimes . I wouldn't give Harris Teeter an A plus, maybe a C. When I lived in Columbia Heights, I had a love-hate relationship with this Giant. The good is that it's a "super" grocery store, which is always great in the city, but the downside is that it's not always stocked. I swear, every time I went to go get my little 100-calorie packs of Cheetos, there were always none there. Impressive frozen foods section, but a meat counter that I only ever saw open like twice. Great beer and wine selection, but... well, there's really no downside about that. Plus, as has been mentioned over and over, the lines are completely insane. Seriously, open more checkstands, for the love of God. The fact that I've waited like half an hour in a supermarket line is totally unacceptable. Then on top of that, half the cashiers are usually surly and don't even look at you. I can't say I really blame them, but I still don't like it when the only words cashiers utter to a customer is the total amount. Obviously, I continued to go since it was the only grocery store in Columbia Heights, but once Target opened, I tended to go there for frozen food and snacks. Target doesn't have something you want? Giant was hella convenient for our purposes of gathering basic supplies for a pasta dinner and random vegan snacks (there's a fair amount of Amy's food fare) for moi. If I were to compare Giant to any Texas grocery store, it would be on par with Randall's, maybe Kroger's? Basically not a badass H.E.B. or anything like that. Y'all non-Texas folks are like "say what?" The produce section was a tad on the more meager side when we stopped by, but I get the feeling a massive re-stocking was about to occur. I lived in Columbia Heights for over 5 years before finally going to Giant. Why? Well I think its average rating is a good explanation. That combined with hearing complaints from friends and neighborhood blogs, and there was no way in hell I was going to come here, especially when I lived a couple blocks closer to Harris Teeter and Safeway. Alas I moved north and now this is the closest grocery store. I was worried this place would be a complete shit show and make my life miserable. Well it hasn't so far. I have avoided it on weekends though, and generally go on weekday afternoons (yay for teleworking!). Yesterday's checker was also SUPER fast, so props to her. Overall Giant doesn't seem that bad if you go at the right time. The selection is decent, the prices are a bit lower than at HT, and the employees seem all right. I have yet to experience the crazy lines that this place is known for. I realize this might all be wrong at 6 pm any day of the week, or on the weekend. read more

This is a terrible grocery store. The prices are outrageous (12 dollars for five chicken breasts, are you KIDDING?!) and the quality is pitiful. The only reason I give it a two is because the employees working there tend to be very helpful. And this may sound piddling, but the way the registers are laid out blows my mind. Lines (which are always long) stretch into the aisles themselves so you might as well give up if you wanted to buy anything located towards the front of the store. And the self-service machines suck. How you can screw up a self-service machine is beyond me, but this Giant manages. read more

This grocery store is two blocks from my coop, so I am here at least once a week. Although convenient, this Giant is not one of my favorite places to shop for groceries. It is hit or miss with the items in stock and the prices are just okay. Some of the cashiers and associates are friendly while others should consider another job other than customer service because they seem like they really don't want to be there. Needless to say, I will be back one day next week because it is just easy to shop here, but I do think that there is room for improvement regarding customer service. read more

As I continue on my quest to find the best grocery store that is accessible via the Metro, I think this might be the one I end up settling on. Not because it is a great grocery store, but it's stocked well enough usually, and it is right by the Columbia Heights Metro. As Giant on a whole has some of the foulest produce, it is way better than the one by Road Island and an improvement from the one at Prince George. However, it is still not good. You can probably get something hardy, like apples, here, but that is it. The selection is very small, picked over, and not as extensive as the store in Prince George. However, it's a safer neighborhood and more convenient. read more

A large store with great potential, Giant is suffering from transitional changes by trying to cater to the ethnic population and the new yuppie and gay middle class inundating the new and improved hood. I have noticed over the several times I have visited, their motives may be changing a little and starting to lean more towards the gourmet, carrying increasing numbers of high end items as the neighborhood allows. But buyers beware, you really want to shop here on off times if you do not want to wait in very long lines because this store is located in the middle of a thriving and some would say "upcoming" neighborhood. WIth amble parking on site, friendly staff, wonderful produce, fabulous meats, a large and varied cheese and pate assortment, and increasing changes in their product line as it adapts to the ever changing hood, Giant hopefully will figure out the right mix of ethnic and gourmet items so it can fill the niche this neighborhood needs. read more

1.5 stars I have to agree with everyone one else about this Giant - the bad out ways the good here most of the time. Out of stock of basic items, prices seem as high vs other Giant's, no shopping a baskets, and I don't even want to go into the customer service! The last time I was in there I actually had to say something to the Store Mgr. about how the cashier treated me. Its the closet grocery store to me around the corner as a matter of fact. So I find that sometimes I just don't have a choice but it is not my first choice. But they do get .5 star for having Zip cars in their parking lot which I take advantage of all the time to do my shopping elsewhere most of the time. It's what I imagine shopping in Mogadishu to be like. The lines are consistently so long that they spill into the aisles making shopping anywhere near a check out aisle difficult and sometimes hazardous. I have never seen a grocery store like this, even in the busiest parts of Manhattan. The self-check out, in line with all Giants is slow due to regularly malfunctioning technology, and dependent on 1 surly manager to help 5 or 6 customers simultaneously. The store isn't even usually that crowded, it's just so badly managed. The fact that this store is used to lure hipsters to the neighborhood by uncouth real estate agents is both hilarious and sad at the same time. Avoid. read more

I used to have to shop at Soviet Safeway until I moved last September. Since then, I have enjoyed my shopping experiences at Giant for the most part. The post work shop, however, can be a bit ridiculous. They sometimes never have enough registers open....sometimes, even when all of the registers are open, there still aren't enough! I will say that its very rare to go there and not find what you are looking for, unless you are looking for specialty items or things only to be found at Whole Paycheck or Yes! Organic Market. For your standard shopping, Giant is pretty great. The produce is not half bad, the seafood area can be hit or miss. They have a good couple of rows for "ethnic" food where you can find the majority of your sauces, salsas, rices, and beans and not leave wanting. Also, if you have a car, they will validate your parking pass for two free hours of parking. If you don't have a car (like me) they have bike racks readily available outside of the entrance. read more
