This CVS and the Wawa are good resources if you're an out-of-towner and staying in one of the hotels in the area. I was staying at the Madison Hotel and the CVS was a short walk. MONDAY NIGHT 2/10/25...came in for one item that's locked up. I see a sales associate talking to a customer in the aisle. I overhear it's about Jesus Christ. I patiently stand a few feet away, he finally addresses me. I politely explain I need a locked item. He proceeds to tell me to "wait in the next aisle" for him. I stand behind him as he continues to talk to the young woman about Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. After a few moments I leave. Absolutely ridiculous. THIS IS WHY PEOPE SHOP ONLINE NOW. The fact that he felt it was appropriate to ignore a customer is very telling. It's disappointing because so many CVS stores are closing. I respectfully recommend management remind staff that its customers that enable the business to be open. We already have to use self-check out because no associate will allow you to pay for an item to a human being there. read more

THANK YOU! While traveling, it was such a relief to be able to walk in and request a refill of my son's emergency medication. The pharmacist was working alone and still managed to transfer and fill with just a few pieces of information. Easily the quickest transaction I had that day! The store is in a great spot with a nice selection of fresh and non-perishable food items for us to use in our hotel room. Well lit, clean, and appropriately staffed anytime I went in. Around the corner from my office, this CVS is a lifesaver for many downtown D.C. workers. It's open 24/7 so if you are working super late, it's among the only food option in downtown. It's spacious and has all the usual CVS suspects, including cards and medicine. If you're looking for streamers, they don't have it. read more

It is bad enough when a CVS is so awful that you may think to yourself "well, maybe they will restock and get a whole new crew of employees when they close for the night". Nope, the same barely-stocked shelves and snarly employees are ALWAYS there for your 24 hour fix of aggravation. Should you happen to need something that requires the help of someone at the cash register, plan on the line being at least 5 minutes long. Should you happen to do self-checkout, count on the scanner messing up at least once, requiring the assistance of a frazzled employee who will take about 5 minutes to get there. Should you go to the pharmacy, be prepared for a bunch of stupidity, ranging from them setting you up with auto-refill AFTER you said no (which is terribly convenient when you go to fill it 6 states away, only to learn it is sitting at the Vermont Ave location, where you specifically stated "no, I do not want auto-refill!!"), to my personal favorite: the girl at the pharmacy register who commented that my license picture was "awful". Thanks honey, I know it is awful and I have been looking at it for 8 years now. There is no chance for taking a second picture while at the DMV in Massachusetts, so what you get is what you get (kind of like the service at this location). And if I wanted beauty tips at CVS, I certainly wouldn't ask the girl who said this; until she wins the Miss DC pageant, she should stick to ringing things up and keeping her mouth shut. read more

I just popped into this CVS as I was walking by bc I wanted to checkout their beauty selection. I was pleasantly surprised! I was greeted by a friendly woman who's a Beauty Consultant and was offering samples of Olay products. She even gave me extra samples for my mom and sister! I was browsing around the beauty section and although they didn't have the La Roche-Posay Toleraine Fluide moisturizer I like, they have a sorta fancy section for the French pharma brands like Vichy and La Roche-Posay, and the other high-end (for drugstore) brands. That section was super well-lit and Tracey (the Beauty Consultant person) was wearing all Black, so it felt like a mini Sephora or something in CVS. Tracey was super helpful in explaining the differences between the Vichy and La Roche-Posay water mists--apparently the Vichy water is rich in minerals and great for anti-aging, while the La Roche-Posay water is rich in Selenium and great for soothing. Tracey also gave me deluxe size samples of a few Vichy products, because I mentioned I'm trying to get my mom into skincare. I definitely recommend checking this CVS out if you're into skincare. I'm not sure how often they have a Beauty Consultant working, but it was great to talk to someone knowledgeable and get help (and samples!!!). read more

It's consistently pretty bad here. As other reviewer's have noted, it always smells of mildew or mold, they are frequently out of products, and the line for the pharmacy is usually very long. The upside is that the head pharmacist is very pleasant and I can tell that he's trying. But this place consistently misses the mark. read more

I have to compliment the pharmacy employees. I came in, having walked 2 miles in 100 degree heat today because I was unable to get an uber due to technical issues with my app. I had come in to purchase a gatorade. I was obviously very hot, tired and in a bit of distress, so much that I couldn't even focus on the fact there was a self check. Not only did they give me a place to sit and cool/calm down, they also wrote out directions to the nearest bus stop to get me back where I needed to go. All I know is I'm so grateful that there are still nice people in the world. read more

Just like the Government, CVS is everywhere in Washington, DC. This includes near Homewood Suites off Thomas Circle where we stayed. CVS is over and above a pharmacy. It is a contemporary general store that could come in handy when you are on vacation. When I am on vacation, I prefer to wrap up a day and night of exploring with a 24 ounce Bud Ice. The exact beer that I might pick up from a Las Vegas Strip CVS while exploring. So, I'd brave the crazy traffic on Thomas Circle to pick up the source of my nighttime vacation ritual. I'd have a choice of the Virginia Avenue or 14th Avenue entrance to walk inside this relatively large CVS. At either entrance they'd usually be a homeless individual. Inside the store they'd usually be a cue of individuals on line for the self checkout registers. I noticed in Washington DC that the majority of the CVS checkouts are self checkout. In my opinion that is not cool. An abundance of self checkouts is a diservice to the job market and customer service. What was really not cool was that they do not carry beer here. Say what?! I'd learn a lesson about Washington DC. It seemed that the 24 ounce beer that is so easy to pick up in Las Vegas is nearly impossible to pick up around the White House. It's not just CVS. It's also Seven Eleven which I never ever saw before. So dealing with the equivalent of a mini Prohibition, I'd be forced to be a teetotaler the majority of the vacation. There is a wall devoted to cold beverages, dairy, frozen foods perpendicular to grocery aisles. At night my tradition would be picking up a cold Sparkling Ice beverage. Disparate from some of the Walgreens, the main competitor of CVS, there is none of the fountain and slushy drink machines. Forget about the meals to go. They did carry a CVS product line of $1 salty snacks. With the Sparkling Ice I'd enjoy CVS pop corn or sour cream and onion potato chips. And I would pay at the one cash register manned by a human being. The prices here are expectedly high. The battery cover of my camera cracked. I was in the market for glue. The price was too high, and I'd say "forget it" then revert to my smartphone camera. Before leaving Washington DC, I would of liked to have picked up a keepsake of the Nation's Capital. On previous vacations, Walgreens had sold me souveneirs at reasonable prices. I was disappointed in the selection of Washington DC souveneirs. In Washington DC there seems to be a CVS on nearly every corner. It's just too bad it ain't Walgreens. This CVS is convenient, however, it falls short of the Walgreens that have served me on vacation. read more

The 'ethnic quarters' alone of this CVS gets four stars. Maybe it's because I grew up in NC, where you can't really buy "ethnic" hair care products at a drugstore, but I have to applaud this store's amazingly huge selection. I wandered in yesterday after feeling the need to deep condition my sad (or maybe, angry) follicles. I stood in the aisle for a good 10 minutes, actually overwhelmed at the selection, including brands that should only be sold in special beauty supply stores, with decent prices to boot. Impressive. Other than that, this is the largest, 2nd closest CVS to my house, so it's better to hit this one up for sale items, as they're more likely to have them in stock than the tiny CVS around the corner from me. The service is normally shotty, so don't expect a word, gesture, smile, or anything past, "Next customer in line!" And don't forget the endless stream of homeless men who panhandle right by the door, hold out their paper cups and chime, "On your way out, maybe?" as you walk in. But none of that is anywhere near as important as my hair, so I'll keep going. read more

How lame do I feel writing this review? But on second thought, I can't think of any business who's qualities and failings effect me more. I go to CVS more than any other retail business, its open 24 hours a day, they have almost everything I need and recently they added two self checkout lanes so don't have to stand around for an hour as they laze their way through check out. Sure it's a little dirty. Sure the staff is apathetic. But those self checkout lines get me out in a hurry and this place always surprises me with its selection. Two stars because CVS' are as unavoidable as a jumbo slice in Adams Morgan at 3am. I *have* to go here because there's no other option for last minute around-the-house purchases. Man oh man do I wish I didn't though. If the rating was based on service alone, it would be a lone star. We all know how much CVS just plain sucks in this town. Well this CVS on Vermont is by far, the worst I've experienced in the city and sadly, it's a few blocks from my apartment. The service is absolutely wretched. It's as if I'm inconveniencing them by wanting to pay for my items. Don't dare to ask the staff where an item is located, you'll get a point in the direction. Thanks, Columbus. They're s-l-o-w as molasses checking people out and many times I've waited while the cashiers chat amongst themselves behind the counter. Awesome. What does CVS stand for again? Completely Vicious Service?? And why is it before the staff even begins scanning my items they always just say "CVS card??" and stand there until I prodcue it. Do ya have to scan it before you scan my items? How about we shoot for efficiency here and I'll dig for my card while you start scanning the items? I've literally seen a man throw all of his items down on the floor after waiting in line for a long time, mumbling that this was the "worst CVS ever." With all the bad and the ugly of CVS, there are some somewhat good qualities: they have more discounts than other "convenient" stores and when you use your CVS card, in return you receive coupons attached to receipts. Especially for someone like me, who unfortunately has to stop in CVS at least once a week. Apologies for the rant, I am just so fed up with this place. :) read more

I frequent this CVS because it's convenient, not because I like it. To be honest, I don't even feel like writing about it except to tell you that if you are able to go anywhere else, you probably should. My problems with this CVS are very clear: 1. Very overpriced because it's around a lot of hotels. Items I buy regularly tend to be $1-$2 more than at other locations. 2. Rude staff that couldn't not care less about customer service. I realize it must be hard to feel passionate about working at a drug store, but even with lowered expectations this is a subpar experience. 3. There seems to be no willingness to regulate the homeless presence in the store, and on more than one occasion I've had a homeless person ask me to buy them something while standing at the register. I guess it's better than begging for my change for booze, but it is still uncomfortable for the customer. All in all, obviously not my favorite, but I also realize that if you need a drugstore and this is close you're not likely to look elsewhere. read more

So I was so happy and excited to have a CVS downstairs from my hotel at the Residence Inn, because I was going to jump on that beer game after my long travels. I go running around like a man on a quest and what do I get for my excitement? Not the sweet nectar of the gods. They sell no booze, even though on the outside of the building they have posters of Shock Top. What saved this place is one of the employees told me I could find booze on a corner across the street, which was the saving grace for my thirst. Even though this place broke my hurt dirty style, I have to give it a little love for having Microwaveable food, some sandwiches and salads which was all I could find late at night. In addition it was convenient for razors, water, and face wash. I like the self check out this place had, but 2 out of 4 were down a couple times when I was there. read more

I practically live at this CVS, or at least I used to. My building is about a 3-minute walk, so this place has become my little last-minute emergency haven. I thought it would be wise to fill my prescriptions here since it is so conveniently close, but this pharmacy messes something up EVERY TIME. They either don't have my right insurance or "misplace" it after I have waited up to a day for the medicine. I'm planning on taking my prescriptions elsewhere, and I'd rather not be remembered for my irritable tantrums toward their pharmacy staff. P.S.-This particular location can get crowded at the most random times, and the self checkout machines nearly never work. If they do, they only take a credit card, offer no cash back, or something weird. No thanks. read more

Be careful about buying any food or candy products that are not refrigerated and susceptible to heat danger such as chocolate or soft candy. Also, bagged candy should be avoided. Here is why: this outlet regularly has HVAC episodes in which it gets too hot and the chocolate gets too hot to be safe. Also the candy stock person destroys bagged candies by stuffing them onto the shelves. The combination of the two hazards makes this a place to avoid for buying Halloween candy. read more

The location is perfect if you are hanging out around embassy row. The employees are nice. The selections are decent, considering downtown CVS stores don't always have a great selection of items. The only issue I noticed (no fault of CVS) was the four men down on their luck, aggressively asking for money on my way in and out of the store. I do not recommend the photo services here. The machines are old and make lots of smudges and stains. Go to the Tenley CVS or a professional camera store. That said, this is probably the best CVS in downtown DC. In my opinion, the best CVS in all of DC is at Tenley. This is a really big store with tons of candy, greeting cards, toiletries, and of course there's a pharmacy. I've even bought coffee, creamer and filters here. read more

Why am I bothering to review a CVS, am I just trying to pad my totals, and I'm giving it 4 stars as well? In a city where there is a CVS literally every two blocks, this one stands out as being the nicest, cleanest, best stocked, and most efficient CVS around. I walk a block further to get to this one instead of the one on K street. In fact I think my diet would be a whole lot better if this CVS were as dingy and grungy as the rest... perhaps it's not a good thing after all. And they are opened 24/7 to boot! One point docked because sometimes they do run out of the junk food that is on special by the middle of the week. read more

Right in the middle of tons of hotels, and this CVS could not be more lacking in numerous travel supplies. Went in earlier this week to pick up a bottle of spray starch; none on the shelves, so I asked the cashier, who responded "we don't carry that." No, you do carry it, but there's none there; I asked if they could look in the back and see if there is any in stores (rather than having to hike up to dupont circle for a $2 bottle of starch). Got referred to the floor manager, who also said he "has never heard of that and we don't carry it." Just a simple bottle of Niagara spray starch. I show him the section of the laundry aisle where it normally would be, and he said "oh, well, um, ok, I'll look it up, I guess..." None to be found, which you know, happens--but is it too hard for the service team or managers to know some of the really *basic* items that a drugstore carries? read more

3 1/2 Stars. A 24 hour location this CVS is better than most. For some reason it is stocked with items you don't usually find in an average CVS. Items such as hardware/tools, an assortment of water bottles, tons and tons of school/office supplies and a pretty diverse grocery section. And unless and item is on an amazing sale and others have grabbed it up, usually everything is in stock. I come here a lot and know most of the staff by face or name. Always super helpful (of you ask) and polite. Which can be a challenge considering some of the rude and impudent customers I've seen and encountered here. Like with most 24 hour CVS stories you can usually find a homeless person asking for change outside, but I've never seen any real harassment from one of these individuals. Overall, a good store with consistently good experiences. Even in the middle of the night. read more

This CVS is pretty dumpy. I only came here so frequently because of the hotels I stayed at for work but the staff definitely didn't care. Also creepily multiple times I encountered a homeless person standing in the refrigerator section trying to cool off by almost standing in the drinks section. Only thing that kept me coming back aside from proximity was the self check out - efficient so I could grab what I needed and leave as soon as possible. Store inventory was fine but honestly only come to this location if you're not near anything else. read more

At least it doesn't smell like sour milk anymore. This is the closest location to my apartment and I spend so much money here it is ridiculous. It seems like an okay location to me. For the most part it is kept well stocked. The CVS workers are usually around to help when a tourist doesn't understand how to use the self check out....and I love the self check out! I can buy my Shape magazine and ice cream without the judging. Things are $$ but that's to be expected in a city. I do often get coupons for a few dollars off and I appreciate that. There is often a guy sitting on a milk crate asking for change by the entrance. That bothers me every time but again, welcome to DC.... read more

I had forgotten some medication at home; and, was desperate to get my "dose" for the week away. I got up early; and, headed to the closest CVS and met with the pharmacist. She was genuinely concerned; showed a very caring attitude; was able to get my medicine; and, keep the cost down to the lowest out-of-pocket possible, without disrupting my insurance. The store is very nice, big; and, has an excellent selection. I picked up some additional cold medicine for our daughter, as the first batch wasn't doing the job.. she needed longer-lasting. So, great stop, great staff; and, as it turned out, great value. read more

I visited the Vermont Ave NW location today, and standing immediately inside the door, was hit with the stench of mold, mildew, and an odor bordering on sewage and/or a dead animal. It permeated the store. It was so strong, that I bought the one item I came to get, and quickly left. I have been a customer at this store for more than 24 years, and have noticed the store has had continuous HVAC problems within the past year or so. The carpeting is dark which seems to be the source of the bad odors. The ceiling leaks constantly. Today's odor was by far the worst experience I have had in the store. My concerns are that there are health risks for customers, and for the employees in the store and pharmacy who work in this environment daily. Each time I have shopped here lately, the odor seems to be getting worse. The situation brings back memories of the Legionnaires Disease outbreak in a Philadelphia hotel that was caused by bacteria in the HVAC system. Note, there is a Marriott Hotel sitting directly above this store. This store looks like a health outbreak waiting to happen. I hope the DC Health Dept. does something about the situation to get CVS to fix the problem. I have gradually tapered off shopping at this store, and unfortunately, today will be my last visit to this store. I know the loss of me as a customer won't affect this store's bottom line, as it is a 24 hour store, and is frequented by tourists, especially those staying at the hotel above. However, it seems to me that CVS should fix the HVAC, mold, mildew and odor problems if it doesn't want to lose additional customers. read more

If you are a woman and shopping at this store, please be mindful of your surroundings. On January 9th (around 6:30/7 pm), I was followed into this store after trying to get away from the individual for over 20 minutes from 14th and Thomas Circle (next to the Hotel Donovan). Once he was in store, I let the store clerk know that I was being followed and needed assistance. She immediately agreed and decided that I should call the police after the man continued to watch me even while I was alerting the store clerks of the situation. The store clerk was looking for the store's security guard to assist with the situation, while we waited on MPD to arrive to make the report. One of the other clerks chimed in to say that the man who followed me into store, often exhibits this type of behavior in following customers around the store, watching, harassing customers, etc. They acknowledged his behavior is concerning but despite that seemed to act as though this was simply the norm. Of course the man left once he realized MPD was being called. I was not the first woman to complain in regards to being followed or feeling uncomfortable. Well today (around 4:45/5pm), the same man was back in the store. Exhibiting the same type of strange behavior (not toward me but I assume another customer as an employee was following the man around). One of the employees was watching him intently as he moved about the store yet they do this every-time and it yields the same outcome. The man follows a customer, staff follows/watches him and then he leaves only to come back a few days later. I don't know if this man has intentions to harm anyone but needlessly say from following women around, I doubt his intentions are positive. The store doesn't take it serious other than saying "he's weird." I would highly suggest that the store post signs with his photo on entry ways to alert customers to tell a store clerk if he is seen in the store. This is not something to take lightly as the man is continuing to do this on a frequent basis and it's only a matter of time before a woman is hurt or harmed in the process. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE BY MANAGER "KARYN" I had been to the CVS (1199 Vermont Ave NW, Washington DC) store to send money to another country by money gram and I filled up the form and was expecting receipt with reference number but the staff gave me money order. Then I spoke to the lady her name KARYN why she gave me the money order instead of reference number and she spoke with me very rudely.She yelled at me saying she was the manager at the store. Then she told me to go to bank to cash the money order and it was already 8:30 PM at night time. It was very ridiculous. I told her that it was an emergency and I had send money right away she said that it was non her business and I had to manage by myself. read more

I've been using this CVS pharmacy for over 5 years now. My expectations are low from a CVS in the middle of the city, but this one has been pretty great. A lot of the people staffing the pharmacy from day to day are pharmacy students so sometimes I'll have a favorite person there and soon they'll be gone, but as someone who has multiple health needs, I really appreciate having a decent pharmacy near by. Lately the students are a little less friendly, but I know another batch will come through soon. The head pharmacist is really nice. As for the store itself, people on here are complaining about prices being high but at any DC CVS that is the case and when things are on sale or you have the right coupon you can get great deals, you just have to avoid buying things at full price. I go in and grab items that are on sale almost weekly and get great deals. Additionally, people are complaining about homeless men and women in and outside the store. This is not a CVS problem- this is the problem of the times we live in, a societal problem that we cannot be expected to be shielded from everywhere we go. Without CVS and other similar stores homeless people would not be able to eat or drink, the homeless people there have never bothered me, they are part of life in an American city. Overall I think CVS on Vermont does a good job of giving community members what we need on the day to day and meeting our pharmacy needs. read more
