It's OK. Good selection but a bit pricey. Over the past recent years, I was spending over $5K/year on high-end bourbon and never got any special consideration. Owner (manager?) took my e-mail but never sent any deals or invites to purchase anything rare to me. For that and b/c Rodman's selection seems on par and prices are much, much better, I have migrated. Plus, it seems comparative bourbon bottle prices over the border in MoCo are about 20% cheaper and MoCo has expanded its selection. Buh-bye! read more

Magruders is the single best thing about living in Chevy Chase. They have a produce section and liquor section with separate entrances (connected in back), and it's the deli that is a real life saver. They don't carry items like toilet paper or general groceries,but the fruit and veggie selection is top notch and well stocked. Their prices are impossible to beat too. The past 90 days: I got Weller Special Reserve @ MSRP (which somehow is rare in 2018) and a store pick of Weller Antique also @ MSRP. They also have store picks of Buffalo Trace for less than VA ABC's price for a regular bottle. Great location, free parking, knowledgeable staff, LOTS of store picks and special buys. "Old Boy's Club" is the only phrase I can use to describe what happens with the high end liquor sales here. I've loved and patronized this store for years, but literally had a bottle of bourbon I was in the process of purchasing snatched from me at the register today, with no clear explanation of why the sale was interrupted. This store used to have a fair system of rare liquor sales, but I fear now that it just goes to the "Old Boy's Club" that management chooses with bias. And let's just say, "my kind" isn't included in such a club. We should all consider seriously before purchasing here. I'll be letting distributors and bourbon clubs know of the questionable practices used here. Hope they can get it together, the staff here is amazing and knowledgeable. However the ownership and management may need some diversity and inclusion training at the very least read more

When you currently live in a state that has state-run liquor stores, the selection may be alright, but the price seems unusually high. That's where Magruder's comes in. I love the word "Discount" when it comes to buying my favorite spirits. Of course, I don't like rot gut, either. Call me a liquor snob...it's true...but I'd rather go for quality than quantity. That's also where Magruder's comes in. I don't go there very frequently, but it is my first choice when I want to pick up a very good bottle of scotch or bourbon and not have to forego next month's rent. So, the pro's and cons... I am writing this on behalf of neighborhood senior citizens. We've been shopping at this store for years. However, that will probably come to an end. During this pandemic, this store has decided to inconvenience its customers. Now, in order to enter the produce section of Magruder's, people must enter through the wine store and make their way to the produce section; The Connecticut Avenue door to the produce section is now locked! This is not only an inconvenience for customers, but by forcing us to enter through the wine store, there is a greater chance of coming in contact with people -increasing the chances of coming in contact with a carrier of Covid-19. You might want to think of a more creative and safer way to direct store traffic. read more

They have an amazing COVID curbside pick up system. We have ordered from them 10+ times and actually have never been inside. Great deli selection, dairy, cheese, produce, snacks and more. Order online and select curbside pick up and they will pop it in your trunk when you get there. Just call when you arrive. Keep up the great work! read more

This store has been around forever. There are interesting snack items. I enjoy looking around the store for picnic items or something to take on a trip. There is also a lot of alcohol. The store has improved in the past several years. I like the prices and the employees are nice. read more

Horrible and rude manager! I went to purchase and they told me they wouldn't accept my out of state ID due to a "store policy" about only accepting certain IDs. The manager was very rude and when I explained that it was a valid ID and even suggested they scan it, he told me it was irrelevant and to put the drink back. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Dear Safeway, You suck. Sincerely, Me. I started going to Magruders when the recession hit. I never even noticed the place was there, but there's something about the threat of poverty that increases awareness. For just ten dollars I was able to buy three full bags of fruits and vegetables. Compare that to Safeway where $10 will get you four grapes, a potato and a dream, and you'll see this place for the bargain that it is. It's basically a farmer's market store. They have everything you could possibly need as a "normal" cook. Don't go in there expecting to imitate what you saw on last week's Iron Chef America, but for the average person, I can't think of anything that's missing. There is one caveat, however. This place is exactly like a farmer's market in the sense that they sell produce exactly how it came out of the ground. They don't do that "pretty check" that you get in grocery chains. Sometimes the bell peppers look proud and robust...the Spartans of Bell Pepperia and other times they look like the forgotten lepers...shriveled and decrepit. If there's been a lot of cold weather, it will be reflected in their selection. Still, if you can time your visit to match their shipment dates, then you won't be disappointed or penniless by the time you leave. read more

Love Magruders! Perfect for the shoppers who like to pickup a few things. I stop in there to get a fresh side or two to accompany dinner. Sometimes I want a croissant to go with chicken salad from the deli. Always a bunch of fun snacks to grab as you're checking out. And I love grabbing a quick pre-made dinner from the deli. I love this place. Came in here the other night, departed from the hamster wheel of yuengling and chevy chase liquors and got a couple of bottles of Affligem which they were selling for $6 a pop, got a case of Stella for $20 and had a decko at the whiskey prices - $80 for La Quinta Ruban and the Nectar D'Or is still too much - I know I will find it for $50 - $60 soon enough. I like that the staff are friendly, I like that there's a lot of space, I like that you can grab meat and cheeze and flowers along with the booze. read more

A friend and I stumbled in here on a Saturday night after seeing a movie at the Avalon. Unlike most DC liquor stores, you don't have to strain your eyes through a dirty glass separating you from all the liquor and a disinterested and uncommunicative staff person. Indeed, the alcohol selection is great, but the reason you come here is for the impeccable customer service. The staff will talk you through their wine, liquor, and beer selection. The prices are comparable to most other liquor stores. They've also got parking in the back. Great spot. read more

This review is for the "farmer's market." This place is a gem. It has a great selection of produce, and the prices are rock bottom. Need 20 limes to make caipirinhas? That might set you back $4. Need to make a Passover Seder dinner for 15-20 people? You can probably get most of the ingredients for your courses for $50-$75. It's not Whole Foods, so keep in mind selection varies slightly and they don't always have everything in stock (though they usually have most of it). If you're looking for organic produce, you will probably have to go elsewhere. The space is very small, so it can get a little cramped on weekends when everyone's shopping, but it's never unmanageable. My recommendation: Find some veggie-centric recipes, go to Magruder's first, then cross the street to Safeway for any dry goods or items Magruder's didn't have. You'll save a ton of money and you'll be eating healthy. read more

Have now checked back a few more times since it changed ownership earlier this year. Prices seem to have stabilized - not sure if they still run newspaper ads on certain days with the discounts but basically can count on fabulous prices on my favorite fruits and vegetables on any given day. It's again worth going the extra distance to shop here every week. So glad it has survived the transition and come through a much better store with multiple improvements - new floors and carpeting, new card readers, repositioned display cases - the interior now looks much cleaner, neater and more spacious. If you haven't shopped here before you should definitely check it out, it may just become your regular grocery store! read more

This store is fantastic. My family has been shopping here for 20 years. The store has a great selection and offers competitive prices on beer/wine/spirits as well as food items. As others have noted, it's not just what they sell, but how they sell. The employees and managers are just awesome; the customer service is excellent. 3.5 stars. The prices won't always be as low as Safeway but then...sometimes they will and sometimes those are the biggest shocks! For some reason, this little store also carries certain items Safeway does not, so I always find myself in here time and again getting random odds and ends. Never spend more than 10-15 in here, but usually come once a week. People who work here are friendly for the most part. This is the second best beer selection in the area (beaten only by CC Wine and Spirits). A solid local little place. Some of their sandwiches are pretty darn good and beat Safeway deli in quality and friendliness though not price (but I guess that is to be expected). the pulled pork sandwich was great I just wish they would carry more Mexican rice! Magruder's is not covid safe and is unprofessional. Not only have I had to wait in long cramped lines but I have witnessed a woman come in unmasked and the employees did nothing about it which was the last straw. Along with two weeks ago I witnessed employees and mangers haggling with a young women about her ID being fake. It turns out that her ID was not fake and they had this young women on the verge of tears along with the line being held up. Unprofessional and unsafe will not be returning. read more

Came in there yesterday and purchased spinach empanadas. I don't eat chicken meat or pork. I ate 2 and when I bit into the third one it was BEEF! It was $4.99 on sale with the total being $5.48. I went back and told the manager (white hair man with a big white mustache and glasses) He went to the deli and came back to ask me if I wanted store credit or refund. (I been shopping here for over 20yrs)There were no apologies so I told him I wanted my money back (he ad my receipt) and he was going to give me $2.48. I said I paid $5.48 which was on the receipt. I then told him to keep the money because of all that I went through he could have least gave me my full refund. I have spent at least a couple thousand dollars in the store. Best prices for produce (real produce not the Giant version of gassed tasteless vegetables) in the area. Meat and fish prices on sale are also excellent. Besides, it is good to support local firms instead of the MEGA corporation. Definitely worth the trip. read more

I. LOVE. THIS. PLACE. They have EVERY produce possible. It is always fresh and I am never disappointed. So much better than the Safeway down the street. The people who work here are so helpful and nice too. Prices are pretty decent (much cheaper than other grocery stores I've been to). The only thing that's a little iffy is their produce seem to be completely unwashed. But for the freshness and price, I don't mind washing multiple times for the great produce I get from this store. read more

Love this little grocery shop. They have great prices on produce compared to the supermarkets and just enough selection to cover all the basics. The produce is no more bruised than at any other grocer and lasts as long as you would expect. Also they have a great selection of crusty breads in the back. Huge loaves, $3 each, unsliced.
