I ordered a nice bottle of Cognac today here for my father to be delivered on June 19th. Unfortunately the online system there does not work well. So the store didn't see the Father's Day request and the delivery date which was two weeks later. 30 minutes after my order my father received the present. I was shocked. If this was my daily grocery shopping delivery it would have been amazing - what great quick service. This is unacceptable and ruined a nice Father's Day gift. However, they made Father's Day 2020 so special and memorable because I usually don't remember any other Father's Day gifts that I give every year. Now I can laugh about what happened. During our Connecitcut Avenue journey, we needed a place to pick up some wine & we were able to see the sign & park. Walked in, got a nice hello & how may we be helped? Different palates of wine for different folks, so the very friendly salesman was able to assist us simultaenously. I was in high Malbec mode as the selection of wineries was pretty good for the tight knit section. Very good prices, especially the more you purchase. I got a kick out of the little signs that reads, "Regular Bottle, 1 Bottle Special, Case Special". It's not a very big store, yet has depth in its layout & good variation of libations to offer. I took advantage of the Diseno that had a good price attached to the bottle(s). My gal pal obviously was happy with the price point for her selection as she walked out with 3 bottles...not judging, just saying. Good beer options. Good choice of amaros. Lots of liquors. And a huuge selection of wines. There's really not much more you can ask for. They are second to Sherrys in terms of great amaro selections, but they are by far the best option in this part of town. Bonus points for the stellar free tastings they have on weekends (at least during normal, non covid times). I have discovered some new wines and a port or two thanks to those tastings. On my most recent visit I found exactly what I was looking for: Mathilde Framboise. The MoCo Liquor stores didn't have it. They want to sell you the pricy Chambord brand. Probably a great place except for the one employee who forced my friend to pay full price for a 6 pack that broke in his hands and had glass shattered all over him. Told him he would call the cops if he didn't pay for the whole thing. Didn't get the name of this employee but he needs to be fired. If your eyes light up and you begin to wring your hands in glee at such odd terms like high gravity, hefe, grains of paradise and trappist this may very well be your salvation. Like many typical suburban teenagers who went through high school and college and dipped (dove?) their toes in the party scene, I grew up drinking beer to do one thing and one thing only - get drunk. Yes, weekends were made for MGD, Beast (Beast Lite actually, tasted LESS like beer!), Coors Lite, Icehouse and Mickeys. Ring a bell? It's weened many a party goer through high school and college. Throw in a St. Ides or Colt 45 into the mix from time to time, and that was about the extent of my beer experience. Fast forward to today, and some would say I'm an unapologetic beer snob. I'm not sure when I started refusing the likes of Coors Lite, Budweiser and their ilk ... but I'm happy I did. And it's places like Chevy Chase that feed the addiction. Craft brews, Belgians, German, Irish - they seem to cover it all. Hard to find craft brews and seasonal runs can be found here. Scaldis Noel? Anderson Valley Winter Solstice? Yes. That oddly named Tripel that you fell in love with at Granville Moore? Probably stocked - and if it isn't, just ask. The staff is immensely knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help. It's no wonder they often get mentioned as one of the top beer stores in both the area and U.S. Go. Drink. Repeat! (Yes, the do sell wine and liquor here too. Attention all Belgian beer lovers! Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits has your best interests at heart. I discovered CCWS totally by accident, having inadvertently clicked on a talk thread that referenced this place. Fate? Hmm... well, I don't know about that, but I DO know they have one of the better selections of beers in the DC area. What I really, really like is that their website (didn't see it in this entry, so as a public service it's: http://www.chevychasewine.com) has an inventory listing, so you can check to see if what you want is in stock (or even offered) before you leave the house. While I didn't test it by looking for something they said was out of stock, all the items I wanted (Westmalle, Ename, St. Feullien, Karmeliet) were all in stock (though some of their selections will only be in those champagne-sized bottles). Like Scott says, it's a really good deal, since they have a Brickskeller-esque (and Beck-ian) selection without the prices that go along with them. $4 for a Belgian that I got at Beck last month for $12. Okay, so it won't replce the ambience of Beck and certainly won't replace the knowledge of the bartenders there, but it does make it easier to quaff your favorites at home! I kept being ultra-careful because I was absolutely certain with one wrong move, I'd knock down a whole rack of wines. Stock is packed very, very close together to optimize limited space. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and quickly pointed out where it was I needed to go. I didn't scope out their wines, but it looked like they had a really good selection. While CCWS isn't close to a metro station, it really isn't that much of a trek to get to. I'd say once you're out on the street, it's about a 10-15 minute walk. You probably don't want to do this very often in the summer though. Protip: they reuse plastic bags and offer those thin paper bags, so if you're looking to load up, you probably want to bring one of those cloth grocery bags you get at Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I think if my trek back to Arlington were any longer, my bag would definitely have split open. The verdict: the prices per bottle were very reasonable, and if it wasn't for the distance, I'd probably stop by here once a week to pick up a few bottles of something nice. Now, as I said earlier, I didn't really check out the wine, but I've seen stores with larger selections (not that this is good or bad, just throwing it out there). But for beers from around the world (particularly Belgians and Germans), I've yet to see a similar selection in the area. Try it... My review is mostly targeted at Chevy Chase's Wine & Spirt's recent LivingSocial offer, but I think it speaks volumes about both businesses overall as well. We purchased a $45 LivingSocial voucher that claimed to be worth $100 (and a savings of 55%) for six pre-selected bottles of wine. To cut to the chase, we were very, very disappointed. A quick internet search showed the average cost of these bottles from other consumer wine stores (not wholesale) was no more than $6/bottle and some were as little as $3/bottle. After discovering the reality of this "deal" we went out of our way to return to the store and asked for either substitutes, a refund, or simply $45 worth of store credit. The proprietor offered a refund, but said that we would have to contact LS directly to get it. I have never been this disappointed with a LivingSocial deal or their partner business before. I'm willing to go as far as to say that this deal bordered on fraud. The street value of the product offered was no more than $40 (using generous valuations), and certainly is no where near the $100 value or 55% savings. A deal like this brings in to question the reputation of CC&S and LivingSocial. I don't plan to patronize CC&S again (so it seems like they missed an opportunity to win a customer). The experience will also give me serious pause before I consider buying any further deals from Living Social. p.s. I debated to myself whether CCW&S' rapid willingness to offer a refund was a good thing and deserved a star. On its face, it seems like yes. I didn't like what I got, so they tried to reconcile. At the same time I'm suspicious--he didn't even blink as if he might be surprised by our reaction to the sub-par offering. And I think that's because they know very well that they are pawing off the equivalent of $2 Buck Chuck at a hefty premium. p.p.s. LivingSocial has refused to offer a full refund; instead they are offering LS "Deal Bucks" so that we have the opportunity to get F-d again. Lame. read more

Despite the name, this place is located in DC, not Maryland, way up north on Connecticut near that old-fashioned diner I don't know the name of and the place where pedestrians are given large orange flags to wave as they cross the street. But anyways... This is a very well stocked liquor store. One half is dedicated to wines, and while I haven't bought a bottle from here yet, from the large selection I saw they have something for everyone. The other half is dedicated to BEER! Some is refrigerated, some is not. They've got a large selection that is packed so tight, you have to look through them on the shelves like books in a library. Needless to say, they've got some harder to find brews. You can buy individual bottles of beer, so making your own 6-pack (or 7-pack, or 8-pack) is fun to do. Use the tiny shopping carts they have to pick up your selection. The staff is always friendly and I've heard they have outstanding knowledge of their products (something I have yet to take full advantage of ). Great place, a bit far out of my way, but always fun to look around inside. Park in their lot in the back to avoid heavy Conn. Ave traffic. read more

If you're like me and you don't mind spending $8 - $15 on a single beer, then this is the place for you. Although I love wine too, I can't speak to their wine selection because this is my beer place. They always carry the best, most obscure beers by the best breweries across the country. If they don't have it, they will often order it for you. Anyone looking for beer by: Alligash, Avery, Rogue, Dogfish Head, Victory, Russian River, Stone...or any of the best beer in the country, come to this place. I have yet to walk out of here without HAPPILY dropping $75+. And best of all, the staff there knows their beer and hosts tastings I believe on Friday night. Aside from the beer, I can also say they helped recommend a bottle of cognac for a christmas present and my father was incredibly happy with their selection. I really had to think about this before I wrote the review. As a couple of others have mentioned I came here solely for the Living Social deal, which advertised 6 bottles of wine (up to $100 value) for $45. Of course, the LS deal doesn't tell you the brand of wine, just that it's "pre-selected", so there was no way to research the actual value before making the purchase. However, as the link below will show, this "$100 value" is grossly overrated. I remember the first time I stopped in Chevy Case Wine & Spirits to pillage the craft beer section. It was glorious.. a kid in a candy store. They always have the things I am looking for in stock and you can easily check their website for prices, in stock items and not to mention quick responses from the staff via email. They have also been kind enough to hold cases of beer that would likely have been gone in a flash (Bell's Hopslam to be exact). The prices aren't the best I have ever seen, but many of the craft beers and foreign selection are very reasonably priced. I continue to come back, as they often have great weekly deals on good cases of beer. I haven't purchased much wine from this store, but the selection seems quite good as well. read more

This is a funky little store. It took me a while to figure out where this place was -- I thought it was in Chevy Chase proper -- but eventually found it and the 1809 beer they had in stock (the lone store in DC). Outstanding collection of beer -- beer that will not be found in any other store in DC. The beer merchant knows his stuff and is very willing to help you find what you are looking for......and the prices aren't bad either, though there are better deals to be had -- certainly worth supporting this great selection of hard to find beers. I am not a huge fan of their wine selection or prices -- nothing really wrong with it -- but just not my cup of tea. Will return. read more

This is a beer store / liquor store that is within walking distance of the Friendship Heights station. It has a good selection of beer and about 1/3 of the store is devoted to beer entirely. The setup is a little odd. There are basically singles on the shelf only. Lots of a shelves with a couple of bottles on each shelf of each beer, maybe 6 individual beers to a shelf. Each are individually marked for sale, there are discounts for 6 / 12 / 24 packs of any particular beer. I guess its a bottle lovers paradise. There are several hundred varieties of beers there. Seriously impressive. The staff is helpful and the two people I talked to knew a lot about their inventory. Also, their website has a partially complete inventory online (although you have to search it and some of their spelling is questionable). I seriously think that I have found my new beer store in general. At least I have three really reliable ones now. I am seriously impressed by Chevy Chase and if you are in the DC area and want to make a mix pack of beer, get to this store. Good Job Chevy Chase. read more

In Maryland, there are only a handful of places where I'll go buy beer: 1) The Perfect Pour (Columbia, MD) 2) Olney Beer and Wine (Olney, MD) duhh 3) Gilly's (Rockville, MD) 4) The Pump (College Park, MD) 5) Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits (Washington DC) Great selection of beer. I know it's been said a lot, but it's true. You can't hide it. All separated into individual bottles. If you're the brave one and would like to try your stab at a bunch of beers, come check this place out. Although the one thing that does bother me is that they only sell it in individual bottles. Yea, they have a few six packs in the fridge, but you have to buy the bottles in singles, packs of 4, or a case. Just wish they would offer more specials/sales. read more

Like at most DC jobs, by the end of the week I usually needed a drink or two. This was close to where I lived and they have a decent selection of alcohol at all price points. I was usually able to stock up a pretty decent amount and not spend all the money I had worked for that week! The staff was friendly and gave me some great suggestions of things to try. Imagine the Brickskeller's beer selection lining the walls in single-bottles. Heaven you say? Well you're not far off. If you're willing to pay a premium, you can try dozens of beers you've never seen or heard of, for much less than you'll pay at a beer bar like Brickskeller's. Their wine selection is impressive as well, but there are plenty of places in the city with huge selections, so I'd say CCW's specialty is definitely beer. Crazy good selection, crazy high prices. This place has the best beer selection I've seen in a while, but the vast majority of the beers are only available in singles, and the singles are pretty expensive. There are no six-packs you'd be excited about that cost 10.00 or less, I can guarantee you that. Bombers also run expensive from the mundane (Rogue Dead Guy for 7.99? What a joke.) to the exciting (lots of stuff I would be excited to try ran $10+ for a 22. I bought one because everyone in there was friendly, but if I didn't choose the greatest beer ever, I'll have wasted a decent amount of money). I will definitely never be back to buy beer for myself. The prices are so high I feel like I'd may as well just go to a good beer bar. On the other hand, the next time I look to buy a gift for a fellow beer lover, this will be my first and only stop. read more

The beer selection here is a little better than Rodman's (which has the advantage of being cheaper and metro accessible) but is inferior to Magruder's next door. The atmosphere here reminds me of a haunted house and the staff could be fill-ins for the ride as well. Prices are stupid expensive and make no sense. It's sort of a creepy place to visit. I hate going here and have gone about 10-12 times and rarely buy anything. The main advantage they have over Rodman's and Magruder's is that you can buy singles of beers I just want to try. Pro Tip: There is a Maryland run state monopoly liquor store next to the Friendship Heights metro that is called Chevy Chase Wine and Liquor that doesn't really have beer at all and much less wine than here, BUT they have a much better Scotch and Bourbon selection that is also very cheap. Don't get confused between that and this privately run store within DC where there are no alcohol laws. read more

Today i just found out the parking ticket i got when i was shopping at their area a month ago is because they actually called the police to do that. And the guy work there stop me at the parking lot and tell me about that and warning me i will get another ticket as is 250$ if i park there again . "It was so nice of him". It could be better that he just need to put a note on my car if i park over the time of limit. My husband and I fell in love with a South African wine called Groot Constantia, 2012 Pinotage. It was only available in South Africa and it was his gift to me from his trip. I tried many places and finally called Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits and Brian helped place my order and we obtained a case for my husband's graduation. When you first walk in this place, you think, "Oh, what a cute little neighborhood liquor store." They have a decent selection of liquor, a TON of wine, and what appears to be a nice selection of beer bottles. Then reality slowly dawns. What at first appears to be a few shelves of beer turns into a few shelves of beer plus a cooler and then a few shelves of beer plus a cooler plus that stuff behind the counter. You spend half an hour picking out obscure brews (like the completely awesome $15 old-school English porter), pay, and THEN, as you're leaving out the back, you notice the other wall of beer. Highly recommended to fellow beer snobs. I can't exactly speak to their wine selection, but there were $7 yellowtail magnums the last time I was there, and that's enough for me. read more

I placed an online order for three bottles of bourbon to be delivered for my in-law's 50th birthday. Since I don't live in the area, I was not aware the store was not allowed to deliver in Maryland. The website not only took the order, gladly accepted the tip I left and said it would be delivered on the day I asked in the instructions with the order. Only in small print at the bottom of the invoice did it say for "customer pick-up," which was revealed when I called to ask why the delivery had not been made. If, due to the state's anachronistic rules, the store cannot deliver to Maryland, then it should state that and not allow the order intended for delivery to be processed. That the store does not feel a need to do this, as articulated by the person on the other end of the phone, is a major failure and detracts from a store that otherwise appears to have a very nice selection of wine and spirits. Unfortunately, customer service does not appear to be a priority for them. read more

I have never posted a yelp review... until now. Honestly upset enough by the crap service and being ripped off to post a review. I came here for a living social deal... $45 for 6 bottles of wine that they would pick for you, sounds good right? Instead you show up they give you a prepackaged mix of Foxbrook wines, of which six bottles on a good day together don't make it past $30 total. Meanwhile the service was icy, like they did not want me there (white beard guy mentioned from previous reviewers was my cashier). Honestly, if you don't like the living social or groupon system, don't offer it and don't lie in the ad. Seriously, new to the area, looking for a place to buy wine and beer where I can trust them to honestly help me make a selection. This is not the place. 75 years of business? They must have been a lot nicer to their customers in the past. One word: Beer. Awesome and inspiring quantities and selection of beer. This little shop doesn't look like much from the outside, overwhelmed by the corner cvs immediately next to it, just an odd purple/magenta paint job and some several thousand wine corks stacked in the windows, but step inside and it's an entirely different story...from the conn. ave sidewalk, walk through the wines (not a bad selection in this department either, and usual saturday tastings, but hardly the forte of the establishment), and you will find a large wall of beer to your left (almost all singles), followed by an equally large open cooler section of beer (again almost all singles, with a line of warm beers sitting on top), followed on your right by another cooler of beer to your right with mostly six packs and more typical selections, sporting a few warm shelves outside, one full of belgians, the other of eastern european lagers, including good ol' nicsisko from montenegro, and maybe the best blonde lager from the former yugoslavia)....with a large selection of uk/irish singles lined above the first wall of beer mentioned is divided into sections: the first shelf is all belgian, the second shelf is all germans, and the next two shelves are american microbrews...the cooler to the left is full of bombers, belgians, and british ales,...all of these shelves amount to the best selections BAR NONE of anywhere in the dc area, and the best selection outside of boston i've seen anywhere...you'll find rarities, new releases, and some things you just won't find anywhere else...there's no discount on six packs of singles, but most of the prices are fair to good, and the help is always great, especially if you talk to the older white guy with a beard....if you don't see it, just ask, and they might have it somewhere in the backrooms of coolers you never see, but know are loaded.... ....if you're driving, i'd use the lot behind the cvs/beer store/etc....there's street parking but good luck...great thing is it's a pretty great few blocks to just walk around giving how far out it is from a lot of dc (right on the maryland border) with magruder's, a diner, pumpernickel bakery, and circle liquors all in close proximity...all worth checking out, so swing into this oasis and enjoy bottom line is if you're looking for beer, you better come here read more

I ordered wine from this place during a wine tasting. I was told that I would receive a call before once my order arived and before my credit card is charged. Well, I never got the call. I called the store after noticing the charge and was told that someone had called me. I know that's a lie and there was no voicemail message indicating such. I could have easily gotten over this if the man who answered the phone there wasn't so RUDE. I called at a later time to inquiry about store hours and again the same man was abrupt and rude again. I hoped they had Long Trail from Vt. which only recently came to DC - they have 5 kinds and a variety 12 pack. I also came here for the Living Social deal. I bought the deal based on this lie, "Get an assortment of six bottles of wine from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits for $45 (regularly $100)" I bought the deal expecting six bottles worth $15 each, instead came away with six 2011 Fox Brook wines.. They are not even worth the amount I paid for the 'deal'. What's more, the wine isn't even listed on their website (http://www.chevychasewine.com/products.php), you have to wonder whether they scammed Living Social and bought a huge shipment of these wines to make a profit off of their customers. Really discouraging, if you have a chance to return the voucher, I would do so. What a scam. read more
