I expect to see Randy Quaid walking out of here with his sixer of swill he drinks all through the National Lampoon's Family Vacation series of movies. This place is as basic as a military haircut. Smokes, beer, average liquor? They gotcha covered. Everything you need for a helluva weekend but the blowup doll. The staff is friendly. And why not? If I was surrounded by stacks and stacks of booze, I'd be happier than a Halliburton government contract director. Parking? How do you like circling Connecticut ave? Sometimes you can bag a spot on Van Ness. But no-one is coming here from far and wide anyway. This is the booze store equivalent of an ATM---in, out, on your way. For those who like good beer: the bottom shelf, farthest right of the cold case, holds a few treasures. Two words: Liquor Store. That is the name emblazoned upon the canopy draping over the establishment that is the neighbor of the long-defunct "Passport." Their name says it all in two words. Cutting the bullshit, this place has what you want. In terms of beer, whether it's a Colt 45, some choice expensive imports, or domestic cases, they have an impressive range. The prices are clearly stated on a big chart and their friendly staff is ready to help you carry it all out. There are some great finds in the place as well, including Ace pear cider, a rare California cider that is by far the best cider you well ever have...and can't find in any other liquor store in the Metro DC Area. If it's not in stock, the gentlemen at the counter will gladly order a shipment for you. He did for me. In terms of liquor, they have the standards and then some. Even being a smaller-type place, they go out of their way to have some sales when they can, and the deals have been rather decent. I've managed to get a bottle of Smirnoff at a good rate the other day...and who doesn't love Andre under $3? Wine selection looks good too, but I don't really explore that sort of stuff there. And they sell cigarettes of many different varieties ...and they have Sparks. I bought 3 cans one night and the guy at the register laughed and told me how awful an idea that was if it was all for me in a night. It was not, but we talked for a little about booze of its kind. Again, let me stress that the staff is incredibly chill. Have I mentioned that enough yet? Selection, service, and convenience. Van Ness is a small neighborhood with two liquor stores. One is the hoity-toity Calvert-Woodley, which has a gourmet deli, cheese samples and empathetic staff members. The other is Van Ness Liquors, wedged next to a Taco Bell/KFC and a Bank of America. There is no real sign proclaiming its name as "Van Ness Liquors" as far as I have seen. It just says "Liquor Store" -- plain and simple. Like the cans of beer in cartoons and bad movies with labels only reading "BEER." Despite its dubious credentials, Van Ness Liquors delivers its goods to the hood. And delivery is free, too! I don't think Calvert Woodley goes the extra mile in that respect. While CW Liquors is where you go for the high-end wines, champagnes and after dinner drinks, the Liquor Store is where you go for the basics. read more

It's very close to me and conveniently next to an ATM. Win-win. Don't let the random location (between Jerry's Subs and Bank of America) fool you, this place is a hidden jewel! 1) Hit up the ATM at Bank of America. (Why? Because you're a baller! That's why!) 2) Mosey into Van Ness Liquors and march straight back to the beer selection. 3) Be impressed by their small but tasty selection of non-grocery store beers. My favorites include Dogfish Head, Shiner Bock, Hoegaarden, Leffe and Magic Hat. 4) Pay the cashier, head home and let the good times begin! I've been coming to Van Ness Liquors since I first moved to the area about 4 years ago. I have moved all across the city since but I always make sure to stop by whenever I'm in the area. Vinay and the rest of the staff are badass. They have a great selection and will even order things for you that they do not carry. They even deliver! I can't recommend this place enough. It's by far my favorite liquor store in DC. read more

The guys here are so kind! Always great customer service and very dog friendly. They also have free delivery which is amazing. They're quick too! The have a decent wine selection and a lot of chilled wines. Great liquor selection. Open late and deliver late. Highly recommend if you're popping in or having something delivered. read more

My local booze store, always there for me when I can't be bothered to walk up to Chevy Chase Wine and Liquors or Rodman's. But that sounds like I'm selling it too short. It really is the best hole-in-the-wall no name neighborhood liquor store I've found. The staff is extremely friendly (not judging me when I go in there twice in one night...it's happened.) and they have a shockingly good selection of craft beer which they rotate frequently. They also have a completely respectable selection of Scotch, though I haven't actually bought a bottle there... Occasionally they also offer great sales. They would get five stars, but their prices tend to be 2-4 dollars higher than other stores on a six pack. But hell, I'll pay for convenience. read more

When the other liquor stores go dark and grocery stores are not a help, that is when you learn who your friends are. And my friend is Van Ness Liquors. Previously passed over, this subtle, understated store has what you need despite its smaller square footage. The beer selection is good and the staff was a refreshing break from the usual sour cashier at other places. Great in a pinch, better when you have time to browse. The guy sells blunts.... at a rip-off price Their delivery price is $20 + tip. Beer selection is ok. They don't have Bohemia's or 1664.

Staff is nice, free delivery. I lived in Van Ness last year and I'm pretty sure these guys still remember me haha. Not the kind of place to throw free alcohol your way for being a regular, but they are knowledgeable about what they have in stock. Good selection of IPAs and a variation of hard ciders. There's a bigger liquor store open down the street, but this one is open later and has a more casual feel which I dig. read more

There are a couple different options for alcohol in the area but I'd say the main thing that brings me back here is the friendly staff. They are always willing to help you find what you're looking for or even offer you a recommendation. I haven't tried it out yet but they apparently do delivery as well! This place is open late and the staff is really friendly. Some of the liquor and wine is a little more expensive than at other stores, but when you buy during the flash sales the prices are some of the cheapest in town. On top of that, they have a rewards program that has some pretty sweet deals. Definitely a place to go for booze in Van Ness. read more

This store has a surprisingly large selection given its small space. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They are one of the few liquor stores in the area open on Sundays. Unlike some other neighborhoods, we don't have a problem with people hanging out outside of the store drinking. This is nice, bright, clean store that is an asset to the neighborhood. With a little more space, they'd get the 5th star. read more
