This grocery store definitely ethnic and I like it a lot especially because I actually live in Mexico for half of the year. I've shopped here a dozen times, and they carry many items that you simply won't be able to find at a traditional grocery store. However it is somewhat more expensive for the average products like orange juice and milk. The larger grocery chains have better prices overall because they can buy their products wholesale for much less than a small grocery store such as this one. The shopping experience and the interior of the store itself is nearly identical as to what you would find in Mexico or Latin America. They have a decent meat and seafood section, and they also have the most basic produce items. The times that I have come here we're to purchase only a few items. Today I purchased a bag of oranges, and a half gallon of milk. read more

Panam Grocery - a receipt on the floor - Grocery Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

I had so much fun today at this store! a friend of mine recommended this place to me when I told her I couldn't find chorizo in the stores around my neighborhood. There's so much more to this place than chorizo! I found a great variety of Latin American products, most of them unknown to me, but having lived in northern Mexico for about a year, I was so happy to find some of them. When i arrived I was hesitant about it, the outside looks not very inviting, but once as soon as I entered I knew I found a good place.. yes, it was packed with people, and the halls are narrow, but people seem to be used to elbowing and moving your way around the store. You'll find latin drinks, cereals, freshly baked bread, eggs, cookies, sauces, tortillas, cheeses, meats, veggies and MANY MORE products.. when I came to this store I had the intention of only buying a few things there, but now I see I could easily use this place as my regular shopping store, their prices are great, an 18 eggs for 3 dlls, sausage packages for 2 dlls, veggies much cheaper than in places like Giant. Anyway, I just wanted to recommend and say I'm definitely coming back! read more

Panam Grocery - Great number of Mexican products, beef, sausage, chorizo, cheeses and veggies I was able to find at very affordable prices - Grocery Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

See all

Truly... Panam is the last place in DC where you won't be given the evil eye for asking for plastic bags. Besides that, here's the low-down on super low prices compared to Gee-Ant, Whole Paycheck and TradenJerk: * Eggs (not cage-free, but cheep cheep cheep) * Tortillas * Meat - they butcher their meats onsite and their volume sales ensure meat is always fresh * Spices (bags) * Cilantro and culantro, and some fresh veggies Prices for "regular" grocery foods and products are usually a bit more than the big stores up the street. For some reason cheese and dairy is much higher than the big G. If you're a price shopper, you know how to make the different stores work for your budget. read more

This place is effing bonkers! One time I went in there and I had to climb over 3 people just to get some yuca. It was so busy it seemed everyone was dancing together to squeeze through the aisles. It's small, it's packed, it's lively....and I love it. They carry pretty much anything you would want, including what seemed like rather fresh produce. It may take some searching, but you'll find it. I like it much more than Giant for the reason that Giant is simply mis-managed while this place does everything they can with their available space and constraints. I would reccomend the first time you go here to be during a non-busy hour. read more

I almost don't want to rate this place for fear of there being long lines at the closest grocery store to my house. I am addicted to having this grocery store so close to where I live. Sure, the outside looks like the bad parts of the Bronx in the 1980s. Inside, it's DC's most inexpensive treasure trove of quality food. While the bent is toward Salvadoran and other Central American cuisine, there's a hearty selection of fresh meat, seafood, produce and dairy that's comparable to Giant & Safeway, but in many cases at about half the price. The only thing that really bums me out is their :( selection of berries -- only fresas/strawberries to be found here. Usually you'll need at least some basic Spanish to wrangle what you need at the fish and meat counter. If you're looking for toiletries, you need to check out in the left-most lane; they're behind the counter. And if you're looking for their delicious homemade tamals, they're at the other counters, in the white plastic bins covered with tin foil. Just tell your cashier how many you want -- they're $1.25 each and super delicious. read more

This store sucks if you're white. They charge more to white people than latino. Veggies are cheap but don't ask the butcher for meat or seafood or you will be overcharged. read more

Today i went to this establishment to purchase tomatoes! They we're closed 20 mins before 9pm. The closing hour of this supermarket is 9pm. This is terrible customer service! It is cold outside and they didn't let me in. Their bosses left early today and did this! Do their bosses know this? They close down the business when their bosses go home early! Never spending my money their again read more

Love the Hispanic grocery food selection throughout the store. Great people and even offer a ride home for a certain amount of purchased total. It's my go-to! read more

I've been there twice. The first time was a Sunday at around 4pm and it was pretty much empty. The second time a Saturday at around 1pm and it was packed. The locals seem to be used to that, and it seems that elbowing your way around is accepted. I lived in Central America and was looking for ingredients for some particular dishes, I had heard of some latino markets outside DC, but I do not have a car so I went to this one. They had everything I needed (meat, cheese, vegetables, dulce de leche, spices and even blue corn tortillas). But they also have the general staples at a third of the price of Safeway (sugar, beans, rice, flour, oil, tuna, etc). I got 15 limes for $1. Spices are super cheap (oregano, cinnamon, pepper, vanilla extract... but also achiote, epazote, peppermint, etc). Seeds are also cheap, as well as several kind of dried chillies. They sell meat and fish, but I did not try that yet. I went there with a friend, and we shared some of the dried stuff because some of the packages are too large if you do not plan to use them every day. I'll go back because it is very cheap and they have ingredients that I do not find in the chain supermarkets around my house. read more

This grocery store was amazing. It had everything we were looking for which included yuca and panela. Though it was pretty crowded and has rather narrow aisles it adds to the essence of the store which included loud fun Spanish music. read more

It's too cramped, the quality of the meat and the way that the butchers cut the meat is horrible, and there's always mold on the produce. Megamart in Riverdale is MUCH better, has a better quality of meats and produce and is much more spacious. read more

It's not your luxury supermarket. It's a lively little dive bar of a supermarket. With hidden spices and meats and vegetables within. Don't get pasta or tomato sauce here. The common stuff is more expensive. But the price of all the Latin spices and vegetables and products is so much better. Love this place. read more

Many daily items are so much less expensive here than at Giant's down the street. Five garlic heads here: $1, at Giant's :$3. Get my produce here and specialty stuff at the big stores read more

TERRIBLE SERVICE. Would give zero stars if I could. Avoid at all costs. Last time I went there, I bought 3 tamales and the cashier forgot to put them in my bag. I came right back inside once I realized her mistake, and she refused to give me the tamales because I'd already left the store. She was super rude and unfriendly about it, too. Then tonight I tried to go (don't know why I was willing to give them a second chance) and they refused to let me in because the store was closing in 15 minutes. It was 8:45pm, and even though the store didn't close until 9pm, they didn't let me in. I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone looking for quality food or friendly customer service. read more

Impressive selection for such a small store. The produce is delicious. I can load up a good size basket of groceries for several days to under $20. Try to avoid going there around the after work "rush hour" if you're not down with a little crowding and chaos. It tends to clear out after 7. Muchos opciones para una pequeña tienda. Los verduras son deliciosos. Y los precios son muy asequibles. Trate de evitar ir allí entre las 5 y 7 si no le gusta esta con mucho gente. read more

This is a really great supermarket. The only reason it got 4 stars and not 5 is because it is so cramped. Sometimes the lines get long and confusing because there is no space. I always go on Sat.-Sun. so it is generally busy. One Saturday they had a local DJ playing Latin music. You will save a ton of money compared to shopping at the Giant in Columbia Heights. The produce section is excellent and you can find some .99 deals on fruits or veggies with a little blemish. They have a butchers counter in the back with good prices. If they could expand their space a little it would be perfect. read more
