    Pork cutlet

Delicious and quite affordable. Good service and clean too. You should try their pork cutlet, jjajangmyeon, and jampong.

Makchang Dodook Korean BBQ - Beef Brisket

I've never heard of this spot before, and you typically will not find me in Springfield. However, a few of us made lunch plans this past Good Friday to take advantage of the $29.99 AYCE weekday lunch pricing. We got three rounds of beef brisket (chadol), one thin & thick pork belly (samgyupsal) each, and half an order of large intestine (daechang). The chadol was a little too fatty than I'd like, but it was high quality and comparable to non-AYCE options like Meokja Meokja. I didn't love the thin samgyupsal as much, but the thick version was so meaty and juicy. The intestines were a fatty treat, and I was good with just a couple bites. We had to ask for ssamjang and sesame oil for sauces, which they were generous with giving. Our server was pretty attentive, but we thought it was weird that he cooked the thin samgyupsal and the beef brisket at the same time. As for sides, we asked for lots of them (sadly our corn cheese never came). The fermented soybean stew was strong, but a bit too salty at the end. The egg bomb was fluffy and delicious. They also have ramen (aka shin ramen) which we enjoyed by adding several pieces of chadol and letting it soak in there to get that deep meaty flavor. I enjoyed the kimchi throughout the meal, which was the perfect "not quite fresh, but still crunchy" texture. Overall, we ate to our heart's content. I definitely would be back for more chadol, thick samgypsal, and a bit of daechang in the future. The $30 pricing is a steal for the amount of food we got, but I'd hesitate to pay for the $40 dinner price. I don't eat enough at AYCE spots to get my money's worth, so I would rather spend that $40 at a non-AYCE spot for higher quality cuts like galbi and rib tips.

Easily some of the best I've had in the area in a long time, and they set the bar high going into the meal. Once we got to the meat, though, it was a little underwhelming. The all you can eat selection was limited, and a lot of the flavors leaned sweet. We were hoping for more savory, classic Korean BBQ flavors. The sauces were fine, but nothing that really stood out. If we came back, we would definitely add on the ribeye or galbi instead of sticking strictly to the all you can eat option. Service was great and attentive, and the atmosphere is solid for the Springfield area. That said, our hood vent almost came off mid grill, which definitely took away from the experience. Overall, a strong start with great banchan and service, but the BBQ itself did not quite deliver.

I'm thinking that many people who come here know already what they want, because even before we cracked open our menus, the server was immediately at our table expecting us to place our order. When we told her we weren't ready yet, she left, but came back less than a minute later and then stood there waiting for us to place our order. So I ordered the Sullangtang, which is bone broth with brisket and noodles. JP ordered the Yukgaejang, a spicy red broth with veggies and flank steak. We also ordered the fried dumplings. I don't know if the fried dumplings were vegetable or pork, but they were very good, made even better with a delicious dipping sauce. As hoped, banchan was served with our meal, but was just cubes of daikon radish (kkakdugi) and kimchi. The kkakdugi and kimchi were fresh and tasty. Even if the Sullantang recipe is traditional, I was disappointed. The broth was thin and very bland. However, I was able to jazz it up and make it into a pretty good soup by adding spoonfuls of the Yukgaejang broth and the fried dumpling sauce, plus salt and pepper. The Yukgaejang, topped with crispy noodles, was the better of the two soups. It had a lively flavor and as billed on the menu, was indeed spicy. The menu is limited, almost exclusively vegetable and beef dishes, but there is a seafood pancake and whelk (mollusk) dish. No chicken or pork dishes. Overall, our experience was decent and we would certainly consider returning. Shin Chon has plenty of off-street parking.

So the fact that there is a parking lot at Puzukan already is a check for me, but the consistent good food and service is what why I give 5 stars. There are Korean BBQ spots in the area that also offer takeout, but if you're on a short lunch break and on or near Fort Belvoir or Hayfield, this is the one you want. I like their variety of sauces, flavor offerings, and really enjoy their Korean fried chicken nuggets. There have been times when I had to wait a short while for an order I called in, but I attribute that to the time of day (usually lunch rush). This is not just my go-to, it's a favorite for me and my office.

I'll get to why in sec…read more But let me at least tell you that the fried dumplings and the kimchi fried dumplings are excellent: great flavor and a crispy texture too! The bulgogi and the pork belly dishes were nicely presented. Here, to be fair, I need to acknowledge a difference in preferences. I thought the seasoning on the bulgogi was just okay and I absolutely didn't like pork belly seasoning. But! JP thought the pork belly was delicious. Okay, on to the elephant in the room. Why only two stars? I'll start with the menu. You order at the cash register. When we went to the counter, there was a paper copy of the menu and all the prices were blacked out. The cashier perkily explained that the prices had changed so that was why prices were blacked out. So why not print a menu with the current prices? And the reality is that even though there are tables in Puzukan, this is completely a take-out restaurant. Though our order was for dine-in, we were served our meal in take-out boxes with plastic silverware. Covid redux? Also, there was no banchan, nor any soy or hot sauce on the table. What cemented two stars for Puzukan was my visit to the restroom. The corridor to the restrooms was cluttered with supplies on shelves sticking out every which way. And then the far restroom...oh that restroom. It was filthy with bodily by-product flung on the wall. But what was the worst was this restroom was filled haphazardly with more restaurant supplies. Lying out in the open were a whisk and other cooking equipment on a shelf next to the toilet. Need I say more?

The atmosphere: The restaurant is spacious, and I like it when the outdoor area is open since it has a shaded setup and a fire pit. Otherwise, there's still plenty of indoor seating. The food: We started with the Korean Fried Chicken in the soy garlic flavor, which was probably my favorite part of the meal. It came out hot and crispy. We also ordered two rolls, the Double Toro Roll and the Double Salmon Roll. Both were drenched in a Japanese dressing or soy-based sauce, which caused them to fall apart almost immediately after picking them up. The flavor was overly sour and salty, making it hard to taste the freshness of the fish. Overall, the balance of flavors felt completely off. We also tried the Spicy Crunchy Tuna Bites, and to our surprise, the only crunchy element was a small part of the outer rice shell. Everything else was chewy and overloaded with mayo, so it wasn't a favorite for us. The service: The service was a bit touch-and-go throughout the meal.
