Came here yesterday for a belated Birthday dinner and the minute you walk in you're taken back by the cute decor and the ambiance we arrived early and got to sit at the bar while our table was being prepared. Bar tenders were friendly. We got seated shortly after and since we have looked at the menu before coming we kind of knew what we wanted: they were out of octopus so we didn't get that instead we got mussels and it turned out to be the highlight dish of the night Ras& pasta 7/10- flavors were good a bit salty for me but I did wish the portions were slightly bigger for the price Mussels- 10/10 everyone should definitely try this dish the curry was perfection. It was creamy but had a kick. As someone who can't eat spicy it was tolerable for me and the charred bread was a nice added touch. I do wish they offered more bread though. Oxtail- 8.5/10 enjoyed the flavors in this dish good sharing portion for two people but if you were coming with a larger group and doing family style I would say it's only good for 2 people max. Scallops- 6.5/10 quite dissapointed in this dish. The scallops was good but you can't really mess up scallops unless you tried it looked gorgeous on presentation however the flavors were lacking. Drinks, we each got two drinks and I think the best one was probably the soursop. These drinks were expensive but wasn't quite there for me personally. Again I am a cocktail snob. The old fashioned was overly sweet and the lychee mojito was not a crowd favorite, not sure what happened with that drink but let's just say it will not be ordered again. I sat at the bar because there were no reservations. I enjoyed every bit of my food, well at least my ribs. I tore it up! I also split a pastry like appetizer ( I forgot the name and don't feel like researching it, so forgive me), it was a bit salty so we didn't finish it. The drinks were really good and I love that the bartender put love into it. I love to see a bartender getting into making the drink because of the bartender cares about that drink, it's going to be fire and it was. My friend got the mussels. Originally I visited Mango Bay on Valentine's day and loved my prex-fixe meal so much that I decided to host my birthday party here. Everything about booking this place as an event venue went smoothly and I'm grateful that the owner, David, and the staff were such a pleasure to work with. For food, I am IN LOVE with their Hamachi Crudo and the Lobster Ras & Pasta. Both had complex flavors that were well balanced and didn't overpower the dish. For drinks, I enjoyed the Calyspo Fashioned, the Mango Bae, and the Mango Baby mocktail. So far I've been here twice since it opened a few months ago and I am already looking forward to my next visit. Thank you David and staff for helping to make my birthday event so wonderful from the music to the the service. The jerk chicken salad had a nice kick to it, with fresh greens and a good balance of heat and flavor. For the main, I had the braised oxtail. My sister ordered the branzino with white rice and a side of sweet plantains. For me, the oxtail were just okay. The gravy was also okay. They were a little tough and not really fall off the bone tender. The rice and peas just felt like something was missing from it. It wasn't the worst, but wasn't the best either. So i was a little underwhelmed with my food. The goat puff pastry was good. The goat was tender. They come to your table and pour the curry sauce over the pastry tableside which was a cute performative thing to add to the dinner ambience. That was good. The pastry was flaky and buttery with the sauce which wasn't spicy. Very flavorful. I enjoyed that very much. The sweet plantains were good too. My sister enjoyed her branzino very much. It was huge. Overall honest experience is 3/5, mid, especially when compared to other similar restaurants. We had the akee and sailfish eggrolls, mussels, seafood Rasta Pasta, and oxtail. The food was mid imo. Ok, mistakes happen..we laughed it off A different runner came out with the drinks. Dropped them off at the table next to us then brought us drinks that belonged to the other table. It's clear the team needs to learn the table numbers. Once our server heard about the mix up, he apologized & rang in the drinks again. The food runner once again arrived to the table next to us versus our table but we stopped him before he placed the drinks down. I was very excited to try the $8 home made lemonade so imagine my disappointment when call I could taste was sweet & sour mix The prawns were only 2 pieces and I barely tasted any curry flavor. I tasted more of a charred burnt flavor. This was served with sushi rice- it was bland however the oxtail was fork tender and served with rice & peas with what appeared to be coconut milk foam?? I'll give this place 5 stars on the things I liked. Working on not speaking about the negatives. Just go and experience everything for yourself. Food: had the octopus, crudo, branzino, oxtail and rum cake along with cocktails. Octopus was tender with the perfect balance of flavor and spice. I'd order again! The crudo was perfect. I'd order again! Branzino's flavors were good but a bit oily in my opinion, also, if its supposed to be an entre, it should be paired with vegetables or a startch, the mango salsa makes it more an appetizer. Additionally, I would have preferred it grilled or charred, not fried. The oxtail was flavorful but could have been a bit more tender. Rum cake is more of a black cake, not like the sponge-rum-cake you might get in Barbados or some caribbean islands. The rum-cake flavor was decent but I expected it to be moist, it wasn't. Service: Perfect! Staff was quick and attentive. 5 stars. Ambiance: caribbean inspired, good for friends and dates. First I want to thank Muta for the stellar service from start to finish......he was an outstanding server. Muta was friendly, greeted us with a very warm smile, he was informative and gave some great suggestions on a few of the starters and the main course options. Mango bay sits on a corner with really nice window seats (yes we snagged one of those seats). Sorry I didn't get the hostess name (blonde hair and petite) very friendly and understanding considering the traffic was horrendous and we showed up a bit late. The starters we selected......the ackee and saltfish eggrolls, the chargrilled octopus and goat puff pastry. I never had goat before and Muta nailed it when he said it was excellent. Tender, succulent and perfectly seasoned meat (but be careful there was a thin piece of bone but I didn't crack a tooth). The chargrilled octopus was absolutely perfect (the palm oil purse had some kick to it but in a good way). The main course the other parties selected the jerk burger with fries (never had round fries but they were to die for). The guys loved the burgers and raved about the jerk spice on them. I chose the Mango curry Australian king prawns (2) juice, perfectly cooked with the perfectly matched suya spice and lemon grass oil. The dish had a side of rice (I normally don't eat rice but tried a few spoonfuls and it was the perfect accompaniment with the prawns. This establishment was busy but not overbearing with customers.....a perfectly run operation from beginning to end. I only wish I lived in Brooklyn so I could come more often. Our experience was pretty okay . We used to come here when it was "Imani" the decor looked exactly the same . I had the peppa shrimp and the rice and peas . The Johnny cakes in the peppa shrimp were dry and not that great . The shrimp was good and the rice was good as well . Nothing to brag about. The ice tea was $8 and it tasted just like cold Lipton tea . Nothing special . The prices I feel were exuberant for what you got . Our server came over twice to take our order and second to get the bill so I can't really comment on her . I wouldn't be back . The food menu doesn't have much on it . The drink menu does. Where do I start? I saw someone else mention the blonde Afro hostess. Yes, I agree she was very professional, borderline stern. I too am used to more inviting host/hostess. We were told the wait would be 1 1/2 hours, almost in a discouraging tone, but given an option to sit at the bar. So said, so done. Ordered mussels in a creamy coconut sauce, paired with toasted bread. This was the best dish of the entire experience. The entrees took awhile to come out, at least 45 minutes after the mussels. I started to grow a little peeved, I think the waitress noticed but I didn't make it an issue. I knew it wasn't her fault, I know how these kitchens work. The entrees: 1. Oxtail with rice and peas 2. Ras Pasta left something to be desired. The oxtails at a price point of $44, I was expecting something better. I needed those oxtails to be falling off the bone, softer in texture and trimmed fat to say the least. Rice and peas weren't fluffy, actually had a hard pea. The Ras Pasta very creamy, near soupy, too much Alfredo sauce. The ambiance is nice, the place is a converted brownstone. This is being posted about a month after visiting so I forgot some details but I remember the food being very delicious and fairly priced with excellent.waitstaff. The only lowlight was the mango puff pastry dessert which was just straight up not good. I really wanted to love this place, but we had a disappointing experience. We came for a 7:30pm dinner for four. Half the party arrived early and they were kind enough to seat them at the table. They have a great drink menu with both cocktails and mocktails. I had the housemade sorrel and enjoyed it. It was frothy, fruity, and not too sweet. Service was fast for the drinks, but that's where the positives ended. It took about 20 minutes for one appetizer to come out and another 50 minutes for the entrees. There was very little communication from the waitstaff throughout the delay, except to invite us to buy more drinks. When the food did finally arrive, it was great. The octopus appetizer was nicely plated and well prepared. The ital is vital vegetarian plate was flavorful and filling. The veggies were tender and the accompanying couscous was silky and buttery. I loved the side of potatoes, which were crispy and drizzled in a tasty sauce. We also got the fried plantains and enjoyed their subtle sweetness. They have a nice scotch bonnet sauce which had a pretty good spicy kick, but they charge extra for it. They told us it would be complimentary given our long wait, but they still ended up charging us for it. We were there to celebrate a birthday but because the food took so long to come out, we didn't have time to enjoy the complimentary birthday dessert, which we had wanted as a surprise for the guest of honor. Even flagging someone down to pay for the meal was a task. Giving four stars because the food was quite good. The restaurant also had a nice ambiance, although it got very loud so it was hard to hold a conversation. Portions are generous without feeling over the top, and the plating makes you want to snap a pic before you dig in. While the seating looked nice, the chairs had unusual ergonomics which made them oddly uncomfortable. I hate to say it, but I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of customers don't stick around just because of the chairs. I started with a rum punch. They have two options: one named after the executive chef and the other named after the restaurant. I had the restaurant namesake and loved it. They also have a mocktail version! Food wise, we started with the goat puff pastry, the ribs, and the sweet plaintains. All three were great. Pastry was savory and flakey. Ribs were ultra soft and succulent. Plantains were perfectly sweet and savory. For the main course, we shared the bass special, the ras pasta, the oxtail, and a side of rice & beans. Bass was a smaller but flavorful dish. The ras pasta was a creamy and shellfish forward dish that was a hit at the table; I believe it was a Marsala based dish. Oxtail was perfectly tender and very flavorful; plenty of succulent marrow on it too. Service was superb. They were attentive, accommodating, and hospitable. The staff were our favorite part of the experience. Bill came out to about $270 for four people before tip. Rounding out to about $80 per person felt pricey, but the variety of dish and the stellar service made it palatable. So today my partner and I went here for date night. The ambiance was cool it's pretty small however very cute. The service was okay, I just wish the waitress would know more about the food because when she was asked about the rasta pasta and was it spicy she stated that it wasn't spicy at all and that wasn't the case. So we had the seafood rasta pasta and the burger. The rasta pasta says lobster sauce and nothing about that sauce says lobster the sauce is a jerk sauce and it is very spicy especially for someone that doesn't like spicy at all. Had such a great experience at Mango Bay in Brooklyn. We ordered the lamb shank with sweet potato mash and the bronzino, and both dishes were absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and everything was cooked perfectly. The drinks were great, and the ambience was intimate and relaxing, which made the night even better. I used to be a regular at Imani's before the pandemic, so I was curious to see what would happen with the space. This was my first time at Mango Bay, and it honestly feels like the neighborhood has a new gem. They've kept that great Caribbean restaurant energy but elevated the whole experience. The food was incredible. I started with the pomegranate glazed pork ribs, which had a perfect balance of tart and sweet. For the main, the red snapper and I paired it with a side of jollof rice. Although I was super full, I convinced my friend to split the Haitian bread pudding with me. And I couldn't have been more pleased with that decision. The drinks are also a huge step up. So much so that I decided to return with more friends and that was a horrible idea. We had a 7:30 reservation and requested to be seated upstairs. We were told there was only one server up there and that it wouldn't be advisable. The host begrudgingly sat us upstairs, only for us to notice there were only two tables seated at the time. Server took almost 15 mins just to greet us and at that point it felt like it was on purpose because we asked to be seated there. Granted we understood it would be a bit delayed but the fact that there were only two tables does not account for how we were treated. For a reservation at 7:30pm our appetizers did not arrive until 8:56.... An hour wait just for appetizers. Unacceptable. While we were waiting on any type of food to hit our table they began to seat more people upstairs. It becomes a bit strange when you watch tables that arrive after you get their food much faster after you've waited over an hour for any type of food. All we got was a plethora of " I'm sorrys" & "the kitchen is backed up" It sucks that that the service was so subpar because this is honestly a beautiful restaurant. The ambiance is stunning, and the food was pretty good. They have great intentions but could use a lot of work in customer service, attention, and timing. I was excited to dine here after a long day at work, read many great reviews but I was underwhelmed, to say the least. Ambience is nice, decor as well but my issue began with ordering -After partially ordering, I overheard the server tell a diner that her item of choice is no longer available, hmmm, okay...My first thought was it had finished for the day(which seemed off) but no, it's no longer being offered! She was annoyed and rightfully so because this is just lazy! This isn't a hole in the wall or a pickup spot, this is a fine dining establishment, Michelin star no less Then to my "surprise" upon completion of my order, I was nonchalantly informed that my item of choice was also no longer being offered (Said items are a soup option(app) and the lamb(main) Guys, what if we specifically and intentionally came here with our hearts set on those items? And back to what I said about this being so lazy of you, either make a clear notation on the menu itself or ensure that staff upon introduction and offering of water, inform us of the menu changes. This is a Michelin-rated restaurant, so we expected a high level of professionalism and service. Unfortunately, our experience was the opposite. We made a reservation over a week in advance for my daughter's birthday and were required to provide a credit card to hold the reservation. When we arrived, we were told our reservation had been canceled because they were "overbooked." They claimed they notified us, but we received no call, text, or email whatsoever. What made this worse was the lack of accountability. The manager never came out to speak with us or apologize, and the maître d' showed no empathy for the situation or the inconvenience caused on a special family occasion. No effort was made to resolve the issue or make things right. For a Michelin-rated restaurant, this level of customer service and reservation management is unacceptable. For the sake of time, I'm going to repost the email that I sent to the restaurant. Hello, my partner and I dined at your establishment last night and we ordered the ackee and salt fish rolls, octopus, fries, and jerk chicken salad along with two cocktails. Our server was highly distracted and kept forgetting things that we asked for. It appears he was more interested in socializing and with coworkers. He also diminished our complaint about two items being too salty, stating that it was due to the umami and whatever else they used on the roll. I highly recommend someone taste the food before sending it out. I eat out often, and I know when food is seasoned and when there's simply too much salt. The salt content was extremely high in those two dishes. The salad and fries were fine. We sat outside, so the ambience was nice. My friends and I went to dinner here and loved it!! The food was absolutely delicious and flavorful! It was so filling & cooked to perfection. I loved that there was so much flavor and portions were perfect. All of us enjoyed all of our food and we were so stuffed afterwards. My friend got one of the drinks and it was soo good. The service was great, everyone was so attentive and continuously checked in. It's a perfect restaurant for any occasion and it was fairly packed even on a weeknight. It's definitely a more quiet restaurant but everyone looked like they were enjoying their food. Absolutely would return and try more things on the menu. read more
