Overall food quality is a 3.5 star experience but taste was inconsistent. Their char siu was very salty at times and spot on other times. They used they used the wrong noodles for their gon lo mein. We had ordered the thin Hong Kong Style noodles but they used the thick Saimin style noodles instead. They prepare more fast food Chinese stir fry. Simple dishes that are satisfying but not very complicated. Similar to Panda. If you want an alternative to Panda and fast service check them out. If you want a higher end Chinese food go to Duk Kee in Kaimuki for very authentic Chinese good. read more

I'm surprised the rating is pretty low. It's great value, I got the one house plus lunch. The fried rice was much more tasty than pandas, and the tofu egg plant was great with bamboo shoots and even some tree ear mushroom, which is super tasty and not found in panda cuisine. I've only been once, and it's certainly not the quality of a proper Chinese sit down place, but for the price it's way more quality than you'd get at pandas! Also, I was in and out in a flash, the food was fished and rung up immediately. So if you go to the lace and order, you should be able to get it quickly if it's standard plate lunch. Ok I'm giving this place a generous review. I want to make it clear this isn't an authentic Chinese food type of place but more local style take out Chinese. If you're looking for more of a plate lunch type Chinese food, this place is legit. I usually eat Chinatown area. But when you factor in price, quantity, and taste, this spot is as good as it gets. I'm really not sure how this place survived as long as it has. Maybe because of customers like me, who forget the high prices & awful quality of food, & go back every few months in hopes that it's gotten better. I ordered the minute chicken cake noodle a couple of days ago. They must have read the reviews which said the food was bland, & decided that adding a ton of salt would be the trick. To be honest the price isn't even the issue, it is the fact they the out right lied. I called and ordered 3 Small trays: gon lo mein, salt & pepper pork chops, and cold ginger chicken. The woman quoted $110. I called back maybe an hour later to add a small tray of gau gee and she said the total is $185!!! I was shocked. I asked how much everything is and she said the gon lo mein was $47, pork chop $43, ginger chicken $42, and gauge $38. I told her that is not the prices advertised online or that she quoted initially. She said oh well the prices changed. You're telling me they changed in 1 hour!!! It was ridiculous. I asked to see an updated menu and she said that they don't have it advertised you have to call to ask. Yet when I called the same woman gave me different prices throughout the day. Took a shot to try Mandarin Kitchen for dinner and my family and I were more than satisfied! We made a phone order and food was hot and fresh when we went to pick up! They will make a courtesy call if an item had run out and see if you want to order a another dish! Portions are great! We ordered crispy gau gee noodle(2×), half roast duck, beef broccoli, fish filet w/choy sum, orange chicken, and salt&pepper pork chops to feed 8 people and we still had leftovers! *tip: remember to ask for hot mustard! Tried new Chinese place for the first time. Ordered at 5pm. When we got there no entrees in the warmers so not sure if they still offer the plates where you pick one or two items. We had phone ordered four dishes with the best one being the House Noodle. Turned out to be the skinny Hong Kong style which is our favorite. They still had all their roast meats which was nice. After seeing all the signs around the area we decided to give this place a try for dinner. We ordered Black Bean Beef Chow Funn (gravy type sauce), Salt and Pepper Pork Chops, and Beef Bittermelon. When we called at 5:30p they were already sold out of roast pork and char siu, only roast duck was available which we didn't feel like having that evening. My daughter and I stopped nearby to check our the shops and decided to see the options at Mandarin Kitchen. We ordered half roast duck (my favorite) and a plate with orange chicken (her favorite). Both were delicious! She absolutely loved it. The staff were so nice and saw I was carrying a few other things and offered me an extra bag to help. Prices were reasonable and wait time was minimal. Food was just okay, I ordered a one choice, they put it in a three compartment plate. They could have spread out that one choice that I ordered, and covered the other third compartment for a better presentation. So the I came here for the first time and I was in the mood for simple shrimp won ton mein due to the gloomy weather we've been having. Plus I was planning to go to Sharetea. The place looks clean and is located in the back part of Kahala Mall next to McDonald's and other shops/eateries- hidden. All I wanted was simple won ton mein. Price $8.25. Not bad right? So I had skipped lunch at work this day and was famished by dinner time. I went in person to order my won ton mein and asked for extra won ton. The lady looked at me, puzzled, and repeated "extra won ton?" Judging much!?!?!! She charged me $3 dollars for 3 more won ton which was fine because $11-$12 is still a good deal for me and I was just hungry anyways. Pretty sure her and her minions (cooks and whoever else) in the back were talking about me. I was the only one in the restaurant. I like to support small local businesses during this pandemic time, but seriously - better customer service is needed at this small establishment. I got my order pretty fast. A different lady gave me my soup and I then asked for mustard sauce. "How many?," she asked. I said 2 (I love my spicy mustard) but she only gave me 1 and said that it was a big container with lots of mustard so I only need 1.... -_- Pffft okayyyy then.....Stingy much?!? And rude! Don't ask me how many then! For goodness sake - it's mustard and I just bought food! Furthermore, I got home and within 2 hours of consumption...(sorry if this is TMI) but yup - stomach cramps due to food poisoning that caused dysentery. Definitely do not recommend this place to anyone expecting good food and good customer service. Better off supporting a nice place like Golden Eagle, or Panda Ex even (and I don't even like Pandas)!!! I really dislike writing bad reviews but this experience was bad and felt like I wasted my time and money. Can't tell you about the food because they do not update their hours of operation. SERVICE IS TRASH! I check Google, Yelp & Apple Maps all say they close at 9p. Do NOT support this business. This restaurant continues to disrespect our community, other businesses (that market fairly), and disregard the state and c&c laws regarding business advertising. They duct tape their signs to concrete pillars under the freeway, screw their signs into the monkey pod trees in the neighborhood and tape their signs up along Kalanianaole Hwy. Just imagine if we allowed every business to do this... Maybe I caught a bad day but my visit made me want to dash over to Panda Express :( The orange chicken that is so ubiquitous at so many Chinese restaurants proved to be marginal and not that different from it's competitors except in it's higher price. The seafood wok was too watery and took away from the dish. We were going to order the duck but it was sold out and we ended up with a noodle dish. How can you go wrong with noodles right? Again, maybe just a bad day in the kitchen but they were fairly tasteless with nothing to set them apart. On the plus side there is parking, on the minus side the service was extremely slow. I really miss Lam's Garden that used to be across from Kahala Mall. Restaurants like Asian Manoa, Happy Day, Maple Garden are all great... this place is so not. The good news first. The place is spotless. The ladies at the counter are friendly, upbeat and courteous. The quality of the meats and vegetables is first class. I bought char sui which was excellent quality meat, much less fat and grizzle than my usual places, but doesn't have as much of the sweet sticky coating I like. The beef chow funn is also excellent - I add a bunch more spinach at home to make it a little more healthy. But don't order the Northern Chinese dishes! the kung pao chicken was smothered in a sweet / sour sauce with some chillies and peanuts thrown on top. and the mandarin beef was likewise nothing like mandarin beef. they were both very edible, just not as advertised. I bought Char-sui 3 times (the one that is hanging in the window). It took so long to process my order after I paid. People inside are very nice, its clean of course because it's new. We ordered over $100 worth of food just to try a little of whatever we thought looked good. First, I had to try the roast pork and char siu. The roast pork was unfortunately bland, not much taste and the skin wasn't crispy. The char siu could have either soaked longer or had more seasoning but it wasn't bad, I'd order that again. I had the cirspy gau gee noodles, the gau gee was very good, the noodles are made with crispy noodles which was different it was pretty good, I just wish they gave hot mustard. We ordered the black bean shrimp which was our favorite! It was so delish but, a ton of oil. My boyfriend got the lamb with leeks, he said it was just okay. We also got the yang chow fried rice, unfortunately also very bland with no taste. We also ordered the house noodle which was pretty good as well. We also ordered half a duck, their duck i must say was pretty awesome! Very juicy, not dry at all and the flavor was on point. Overall, they could use some help on some of their dishes but everything was with no doubt fresh and clean. We plan to go back to try other things. read more

This restaurant, Mandarin Kitchen, is NOT A GOOD RESTAURANT. I bought a half chicken with ginger sauce delivered via Bite Squad. The small cup of ginger sauce was not enough, so I took the extra effort and went to the restaurant to ask for one extra cup of ginger sauce. SURPRISED AND DISAPPOINTED! They want to charge me $1.75! In my experience with other restaurants, they would happily give the extra sauce. Conclusion, beside this bad experience, the food was below my expectation. Recommendation: DON'T GO THERE. read more

Tried this new takeout Chinese place the other day as I was hoping to find decent Chinese food close by home with adequate parking. It scores positives for those first two items, but the food was very average to the point that I could have done better at home if I was not too lazy to assemble and chop and stir fry all the ingredients. First dish was the broccoli beef which was ok (I actually wanted the beef with bitter melon, but they said they were out of bitter melon! at 3PM!). The beef was very tender (but skimpy in relation to the broccoli) and the broccoli was cooked properly. The sauce was a little salty and didn't have enough flavor (ginger, sesame oil, garlic were not that apparent). Rating C+. The second dish was the shrimp with vegetables which was pretty good with a decent amount of shrimp. Vegetables were not overcooked. Not the best quality shrimp (assume these are the frozen farmed variety from SE Asia that you don't want to know what they have been treated with both while alive and after harvest). Give this one a B. Third dish ordered was the House Noodles that are fried noodles with vegetables and meats. The noodles were extremely soggy and greasy, the vegetables and meats were very skimpy in proportion to the the mass quantity of noodles, the vegetable mix was absolutely identical to what was in the shrimp (all veggies were premixed in the kitchen??), very salty and not very appetizing. We picked out the meat and veggies and threw out the rest. Give this one a D. Overall grade is a C (or 3 stars). A little better than Panda Express in the Kahala Mall, but really not by much. But parking sure beats Chinatown and the place is much cleaner than most as well. read more
