Wanted to try this place for a little while - as it always seems fairly busy, with a lot of cars in the parking lot. It's a very typical Chinese restaurant / bar - where those who want to can have relatively inexpensive drinks and Chinese food can dine bar section, or the restaurant area. The food came out fairly quickly, although I wish they would of started with the rice dish. The egg rolls that came out with our 'family dinner' didn't have any protein in them, and were super greasy / oily. The flavors were okay at best. Nothing was WOW like I was hoping. I think a lot of salt was used in the cooking. Oh well. The prices are a bit high for what you get! I'd suggest Happy Garden up in Burien for much more flavor and better prices. read more

I have been 4 or 5 times, and only been treated well once. The food has always been okay, nothing great, nothing bad, but it doesnt warrant putting up with their staff to come in and eat it. There are a hundred divey chinese restaraunts, that serve deep fried chicken nuggets with a sweet sauce with in 5 miles. What makes MK special? The first time, sitting in the bar. My wife and I were there for dinner. My wife wasnt hungry, so she orderd an appetize as a meal. She made it clear to the waitress that she wanted it to come out with my food. 20 Minutes later her appetizer comes out. 40 Minutes after that my food comes out. We had anticipated meeting friends at a certain time, and had not planned for a 1 hour wait for a 3 minute deep fried meal. So right when the food arrived I asked for the check. I had to ask about 4 more times, and it took 40 minutes to get the check. Another time I went in by myself, and had a quick lunch. Didnt ask for anything special, got my food ate it, it was okay, it served its purpose. The waitress comes by with the check sets it on the table, so I say thank you. She responds with a snotty "Yeah". Maybe I am old school, but when I patronize your business, dont feel like you are doing me a favor. It is too bad, there is an old guy who works there (Maybe an owner), who I picked up a togo order from, and was really nice. Also in the other incedents I described he was there too, but just not assigned our table. He seems nice to his guests and helpful. read more

This is my local chinese place. Great food with better staff. Everyone is friendly and nice. Service is usually fast. This is even one of the few Des Moines places that delivers so thats a plus too. I think I've had everything on the menu at least once and have loved everything. I've been on a Won Ton soup kick this year and out of 10 places this place has a top 3 for sure. Everyone comments on the honey walnut shrimp and it is good as they say. Give this place a try if you are in the area. If you live in Des Moines I recomend the delivery service. I really wanted to like this place, but it was difficult to walk out of the place satisfied. I was in the neighborhood to check out potential property and decided to stop by for an early dinner. The setting was like most American Chinese restaurants in the suburbs, which was inviting. The service was also prompt and friendly. I decided to go with one of the dinner specials. The soup starter was decent (egg drop soup) and the BBQ pork appetizer tasted great with the Chinese mustard. Unfortunately, that was where it ended when it came to good food. The almond chicken was bland and boring and the sweet and sour pork was greasier than expected. The fried rice was also bland and I could only take two total bites of the chow mein noodles. The portions were massive though, and there was plenty of leftovers to take home (even though I didn't eat any of it afterwards). If it wasn't for the service, this place would have been tremendously disappointing. read more

I have eaten here more times than I can count and Mandarin Kitchen never ever disappoints. The absolute stars of the menu are Honey Walnut Prawns, Tiger Pork, Halibut Peking Style and if you like curry, the Curried Chicken or Shrimp. All of these dishes are WOW worthy. We are originally New Yorkers and were used to excellent Asian cuisine. After 9 years living in Florida, we had given up hope on good food altogether, but since moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2011, the quest for outstanding dishes has been so much fun ! We drive 14 miles from home to eat at Mandarin Kitchen and it's well worth the trip. VERY highly recommended. read more

THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE CHINESE FOOD RESTAURANT!! I dine in, pick up, order delivery and every single time I always get delicious food! Flavors are consistent and food is always freshly cooked. They have a comfortable dining environment and everyone has great customer service! I have been coming here for about 5 or 6 years and their dumplings with the special dipping sauce are one of my favorite things on the menu. They also have great tiger pork, combination fried rice and honey walnut prawns. Whenever I make a modification to my order, they accommodate. My 7 year old loves their orange chicken! You get so much good food for your money. I recently moved out of the area and I tried to find a new Chinese food spot closer to the new house, but failed. I have been a Fan of Mandarin Kitchen for years and I have tried almost everything on the menu. So I will share my absolute favorites. Honey Walnut Prawns- These are the best I have ever had and I'm hooked! Tiger Pork- Tasty breaded pork in a semi spicy sauce. Ginger Cod- Thin strips of Cod with fresh shredded ginger fresh broccoli and mild sauce. Moo Shu Pork- I love this, lots of flavor. Dragon & Phoenix- Beef tenderloin and Prawns with a unique wine sauce. Mongolian Beef- Very tasty- 3 stars on this one is still pretty spicy. Almond Chicken- Large portion. This is a good one to share. Chicken Lettuce wraps- Not sure if these are on the menu, just ask Mike! Garlic green Beans- Very tasty, try adding barbeque pork to this dish!! Hot & Sour Soup- I have friends that swear that this soup is a cure-all. So that is my Top 10 favorites. They are closed on Monday. The Mandarin Kitchen is by far the BEST restaurant for Mandarin/Szechuan/Chinese etc. in the South King County. Not only is the food delicious, the people and service are superior. They have a great lunch special menu for most entrees under $7. I used to always get Orange Chicken with fried rice. It came with egg flower soup and an egg roll. The waitstaff is why there are five stars on my review. The food is pretty standard fare for any chinese restaurant in the suburbs, perhaps a level up, and very consistent. Where they shine is with their exceptional service, and attentiveness. I come here three or four times a month, and as I am being led to my seat, invariably I will be told my drink order is on its way (they remember guest details quite well). Waters arrive (and are kept full) quickly after being seated, and our order is taken promptly. I have yet to have a bad experience here, no matter how full or empty the dining room is. Just found out they deliver, so I will be trying them more often still! read more

FINALLY. After 6 months of being here in WA we could get our hands on some edible Chinese food that wasn't from a buffet. No joke, we've been through several experiences with local take-out places and sometimes we've had to throw our entire meal away because it was that bad. Not with this place though. I usually wait until 3 before I can make a true rating, but in case there are any California implants out there (especially from the bay area) who are having a rough time finding good Chinese food, then I def. want to recommend this place for sure! We had the orange chicken (which had some heat to it...so beware if you have sensitivities to spiciness!) and it was amazing. And the chicken chow mein...it was missing that ZING for me but still, better than anything I've had here yet in WA. I was beginning to think that Safeway was the only one who had decent chow mein but this place is the IT place. Will def be back. Packed on a Wednesday night - this is definitely a local hangout. The Chicken potstickers with Ginger soy dipping sauce was excellent. The soups were ok. Didn't order a combo because we didn't want all deep fat fried food. Ordered the 5 flavor beef and the Ginger cod and both were deep fat fried (so much for trying to eat a little healthier). They were both good but on the pricey side. Next time would order a combo. It was $48.00 for dinner. Service was very good (especially the bus boy). read more

We've been here numerous times as it was a place we played dart league out of for a couple years. The food - it's always been relatively OK. Nothing here has ever 'wowed' me, but none of it has been bad either. It always seems freshly prepared and comes out hot each time as well. People seem nice, service is always great in the bar, and there's normally enough parking even on busier weekend nights. I've noticed it's normally full of regulars in here, but Des Moines has always been a friendly town, at least to me, and I've never had any problem fitting right in the with locals. :) I like it here enough, but, I don't go out of my way to come here. read more

This place owes Yelp a debt. Without Yelp I would have never read any of the amazing reviews, or even believed that there was any retail or restaurants in this area. The hot and sour soup was good. The Potstickers were A quality and the portions of the Almond Chicken were plentiful. Now, the Almond Chicken was just above average, but with the soup and potstickers being so amazing, I'll be sure to go back to try a this place again. Lastly, the service was top shelf, the waiter took personal pride in his service and was very happy and cheerful. Some of the best service I have seen in a long while. At this point I agree that this is the best Chinese in the area for miles, but based on the meal I had, I'm not willing to go 5 stars. I've been here once or twice before, quite some time ago. The food is always good enough, some things standing out such as the moo shu pork and honey walnut shrimp. The service tonight however was dramaaaatically bad, mostly just due to incompetence and lack of people/social skills. Perhaps the waitress was new. I would be surprised if she wasn't, or if this wasn't her first waiting job ever. Or job ever, really. My stepmom." We'll have the garlic spinach" The waitress stared and stammered as if she had just made up an item that doesn't exist then finally says"oH you mean the spinach with garlic?" As if my step mom was way off. Sigh. We ordered the chicken skewers as an app hoping it was kind of like chicken satay. It was like saucy chicken with peanut butter on the side. They also forgot one of our entrees for super long, we reminded her at one point and she must not have really Listened because we had to remind her again before she checked on it and ThEN informed us it would come soon. She had never heard of many common Chinese food menu items such as chicken satay, gai lan, etc etc. why would a restaurant hire someone with no knowledge of the food and to have them begin work without any training on the type of food? Just all around bad service but at least she wasn't rude. Just....very inexperienced.(I hope). With the exception of the chicken skewers, the food was good. Great local Chinese place one of my favorites ones! Last time we sat in the bar and had horrible service this time much different story the service was way better in the dining room. We esentially had 3 different servers all making sure we had a pleasant experience the staff checked on us several times I consider the service very good today. I very much like the Hot&Sour soup here as a starter I order a cup of it pretty much every time I come here. I also thought the pot stickers were quite nice and my go to here has been their honey walnut prawns as they make a nice version of this dish. Today I tried the Dragon&Phoenix dish from their house specialties which may be my new favorite. The sauce had a nice sweet buttery flavor and went very well with the Flank Steak and Prawns. While I have cut back on my Chinese food consumption (I used to go like two times a month), I still love this place! For starters, the "family dinners" are very plentiful. Good selections and something for everyone. Some of my favorite dishes are: Honey Walnut Shrimp, Halibut Peking Style, Triple Grand Duke, and the Five Flavor Beef. For appetizers we love the pan seared dumplings and Pork Egg rolls. The hot and sour soup is tasty, and the quantities of everything are decent enough that we always take home left overs. There are a lot of choices for Chinese food out there, but when I just want the comfort food I grew up with on the east coast, I always come here! read more

Unfortunately, this food wasn't impressive - I really feel that things were microwaved - beware such fast service. Deep fried meats should crispy, not mushy. Egg flower soup was weird tasting. General Tso's chicken had a strange brown sauce and wasn't spicy at all, and only 5 mushy pieces of broccoli and lacked any freshness.
