I gave these guys a bump and hope I don't regret it. I could tell something was different, because the two women who I think were sisters weren't here, and I've never been here without them. The food was fairly mediocre in the past, but there is so much bad Chinese food in the area that this place being average at best made it a reasonable choice. I asked if it was new ownership, and the guy said they took over about 6 months ago. There are some less than positive reviews from late summer, but I see why. Consistency here needs work and I assume they were still figuring things out. My lunch special was pretty good. The portion was large, the flavor was much improved as well as the recipe. The guy told me previous owners didn't marinate their meats, but they do. Marinaded meats mean more flavor and more tender bites. These days people appear to be afraid of flavor but for those of use that demand it in ethnic food, it's ruining meals. Here are a couple things owners can improve on. I ordered a dish that contained seafood and chicken, I advised no seafood because I'm allergic. On the first but, I could tell something was wrong and I found seafood in my plate. They apologized and made the entree again and I have a pen to inject myself, so I was fine, but at a minimum, that entrée should have been free and honestly for a true health issue the meal should have been comped, but the price was not adjusted, and another reviewer described a similar situation. I also tried the Mongolian Beef, a dish that is traditional spicy. The description advised that it was served with hot peppers, but my dish had no hot peppers, was a zero on the spice scale and had way too much sugar. I'm a bit tired of feeling like Chinese food is candy instead of spicy savory food. It appears this family has made a choice to not honor traditional regional Chinese recipes. This small business has an opportunity to attract a crowd. People would come from all over the region for spicy, regional food, but so far everything I've tasted has been light on spice and heavy on sugar. I have ordered from China House through DoorDash and GrubHub a few times and have had no issues with them. Their portions for lunch specials for takeout is a great portion with choice of soup, rice (fried rice for an extra dollar) and entrée of your choice. I only ask that you be wary when you order something that has a lot of sauce as it can get a bit messy. As for dining in, I invited some girl friends out for girls' day for lunch here as I had positive experiences from take out so I figured I would see how going there and dining in would be like. Our server was extremely friendly and patient with us, also allowed our party to be seated even though a few of our members came in late due to traffic. He got us hot tea which was perfect for that rainy, cold day. Although our party arrived a little bit past their lunch time, our server was more than happy to let us order from the lunch menu as we had arrived before it ended so he would honor that for us which was extremely kind and sweet of him. We ordered sweet and sour shrimp, Mongolian Beef and Sichuan Pork. Each of us enjoyed our meals and soup as we were really hungry and half of us had leftovers to take for lunch tomorrow. Their chili oil is really good too, if you like a more spicy kick with your meal. The inside is very relaxing and not overly cluttered like in other Chinese restaurants. It's always fun to visit a new eatery. The place is open and clean enough. And decoration Was basic Chinese..though I loved their place mats under glass. We ordered kung pao chicken and because they were homemade, we also ordered pot stickers. The chicken came first... and it was good. Spicy. And had been made with frozen peas and carrots, and celery cut in the angle. The peanuts were raw peanuts.. and the flavor had a Smokey flavor like Smokey oil was used. It was good, just not your usual king pao. The pot stickers were huge.... Good filling, but the dough was thick and of completely cooked and extremely greasy. But good tasting. Two sauce jars were placed on the table---- they were fingered and not just a few fingers. All in all food was good. We had to wait to be seated, which was mostly the fault of a Karen who was ordering to go. However, when the hostess/waitress finally sat us at a booth, it was across from the booth they were using to maybe do their taxes or something? It just felt very haphazard and unprofessional. The decor was dated, I mean out of last century and not in a "fun-kitschy way", but in a "dingy-cluttered" way. The menu was filled with things but the combo dinners were not great pairings and they up-charged for fried rice without making it clear. Everything came out lukewarm except for the soup and tea. It's like they had it all sitting in back for a good few minutes after dishing it up before bringing it out, no bueno. We got a combo, and ended up buying two more entrees because we were unsure of the amount of food we would get. The combo was a good option, I just wish there were more combo options that didn't include shrimp, as I have an allergy. The server was not particularly attentive, but she did finally refill our waters and tea after we pointedly placed the empty pot, lid open at the edge of the table. The food was also under seasoned, from the cloyingly sweet "hot and sour" soup to the pork fried rice we were charged extra for, the whole meal lacked salt. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good. Everything seemed to be made in house, but just because it was made from scratch does not make it good. I debated leaving the leftovers, but after paying over 100 dollars for our meal, I just couldn't bring myself to. Maybe it will be better, reheated in the air fryer and properly salted, but my hopes aren't high. If you are looking for Chinese food in Auburn, this might be the best option, but then again, there isn't many places to choose from. This is our go-to place for Chinese, not just because it's local, but because this is the best Chinese food we've found in WA state in the 8 years we've been living here. The staff treats us like royalty. They are always so kind and know us so well by now that we practically don't have to order anymore. We come in, they seat us and right away they spout off our order to us. Sometimes we change it up, but very rarely. The customer service is top notch. I love everybody here! If you come here, you have to try the potstickers and make sure they put in the order right away because they take a while to make. They are the best potstickers we've ever had- that includes potstickers in CA. They are made in-house and are so fresh and plump and delicious...we sometimes order two orders. My daughter who is the pickiest eater in the world, can't get enough of them. Their dinner specials are also fantastic. We get the #2 with fried rice (an extra charge, be aware), sweet and sour soup (with real chunks of meat in it- FANTASTIC) BBQ pork, chicken chow mein and general tso. BIG portions. The Chinese restaurant we have been going to for over thirty years finally closed their doors this past fall, and we were crestfallen; how could we possibly find another that was just as good?!? My first requirement is always that the Hot & Sour soup be delicious; it's hard to find a place that meets that standard sometimes. Reading a post on social media recently, I saw China House come up multiple times as having the best hot & sour soup in the Seattle area. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued! The first chance we got, we made a trip down to Auburn to check them out. Not only was the soup fantastic - exploding with flavor - but everything else was delicious as well! We opted for the Szechwan Dinner combo. The Kung Pao chicken was well seasoned, and the Szechwan Crisp beef was unbelievable! The staff is very friendly, and has some great recommendations to make. We found they were eager to ensure that we had all we needed for a great dining experience. Very glad we have discovered this place; I think we've found our new favorite location for the next thirty years to come. I love coming here with my oldest daughter and granddaughter! The lady who works here is always friendly and helpful. She takes care of our order quickly and before we can settle in we are brought our soup and water, then before we finish our soup the food is brought out. I have been getting the sweet and sour chicken, this time (12/26) visit there were a few pieces of chicken I could not cut with my fork and I could not eat, too fried and too hard. But I upgrade to the fried rice and it is always tasty. The soup this time was not too tasty and the tea was not ready upon us arriving this time and it was not till we were almost done that she brought us tea (that was mainly wasted due to so late in the meal). In my experience I know discrimination, the problem is others don't see it in themselves what they do, they become accustomed to the behavior! Pay more attention when black and brown people come to your establishment at the same time, pay attention to your service to both parties! If you look around your establishment you will be aware as full as it was that day, the majority of your customers were white. (Could it be because blacks are treated secondary)? Not to say you don't have black and brown people come in. If I was treated the same way as your other customers I would not be here making this complaint! I love Chinese food and we decided to try this place out on my birthday. The front end of house customer service was okay . They were pretty busy when we walked in so it took a minute to be noticed fir seating. The front staff are very nice and friendly. Now let's get to the food ... which I was highly disappointed with. I was expecting some good Chinese food for my birthday and this place was a let down. We ate the food but I left telling myself "never again" . I am going to go ahead and blame the chef or the owner not the very nice staff in the front. They made the experience atleast pleasant. We liked the service level, and the food was great as far as I can be a judge. For better or worse, service personnel often rely on tips to help make a living. If you don't believe in tipping or if you are in the habit of tipping very little, you have no business patronizing anything but fast-food establishments. Combine being a demanding customer with not tipping and you become anathema to the waitstaff. I was once a job coach for the developmentally disabled and one of my clients worked at the airport providing wheelchair services for disabled travelers. They made most of their money from tips. They quickly learned that certain groups of people were notorious for stiffing the servers with no, or very little, tips. Human nature dictated that the cheapskates were avoided whenever possible or given the bare minimum of service. And, please, spare us the automatic accusations of discrimination. By now that has grown ineffective due to over and unjustified use. read more
