Mongolian beef lunch special with bbq pork appetizer.
    Pat F.

I can't believe I've never reviewed my Lucky Star! A neighborhood strip mall Chinese place family run and pretty popular with local diners. Note that most of these diners are the older white folks like myself. I've been going here occasionally for lunch for years from daughters playing softball tournaments nearby years ago and regular work of mine in the area. The wife pretty much runs the front end and she is great, hardworking, and polite. Her three kids have always had their own booth next to the POS table with their artwork and toys adorning the wall and table that they hang out in during time off from school while parents run the restaurant. They've always been well behaved and cute to watch. Now the oldest is a host! Pretty good performance too but still reverts to hanging with his siblings during low points. I usually order a Mongolian beef or occasionally another choice. What I like about their lunch special is that you pick your appetizer and soup and that includes a won ton soup option. Love those things compared to a usual Chinese lunch special. The beef is good but really heavy on onions and scallions! I love these but just too much for me. The rice could really be a bigger serving! A little bbq pork with a really good condiment portion is great and wonton soup average but still tasty. This is a solid three star place and I want to give a fourth but their food just doesn't quite get it there! But I'd recommend this to anyone in the area after a decent Chinese meal however the Hawaiian bbq place nearby has been getting my quick cheap lunch business lately as it's a better value for better food. Lucky Star is definitely a valued local establishment worth supporting.

My seafood noodles. This is a fraud. Won't be returning

Food was too sweet, teriyaki like. I ordered the seafood chow mein. The noodles came out like as if it's a teriyaki noodle. The sauce is a sweet soy based. Only a few scallops in there that's a size of a dime, maybe smaller. Two tiny azz shrimp that's about a size of the tip of my pinky. Three shriveled calamari. Service was sub at best. The dinning room was occupied by three tables, kind of sus. But the health rating scores were EXCELLENT. Food came out piping hot, hence the two-star review. Sorry but I won't be back.

Blue Chow mein was really horrible

Service was great ! The food wasn't as good as we have had before. Oh well. Delivered quickly.

    Ambiance - so traditional Chinese

"Well, bless my lucky star!" I stopped in at 2PM for 'lunch' (lunch menu pricing extends to 3:30PM). Lucky Star is a modest strip-mall restaurant with a very, very traditional Chinese 1950s ambiance. You enter the front door into a glass box that in turn has an entry door to the restaurant. The carpet is a faded red and green Chinese Paisley design. The booths are solid red textured plastic and the tables are a low contrast pastel purple. Low-watt yellow lamps hang over each booth and the quiet music playing in the background is the same we've all heard a million times (it repeated over and over for an hour!) All in all, Lucky Star is one big Déjà Vu experience. It doesn't stop there. An ornate heavy menu is already on your table. Shortly, a teapot of fresh brewing tea arrives, and the waitress takes your order (I ordered Kung Pao Chicken). The Kung Pao chicken comes with your choice of soup, appetizer, rice and fortune cookie. Considering that hot tea is included, this is a real value at $9.50. All of the lunch menu entrées range from $8.50 to $11.50, and the variety offers something for everyone. I 'thank my lucky stars' that I ordered won-ton soup, but was served hot'n'sour soup by mistake - best mistake ever, the hot'n'sour was absolutely delicious, had all the ingredients and flavor we all remember and love. I chose the BBQ Pork appetizer. Three large slices came chilled with traditional sesame seed, hot mustard and catsup sauce. The flavor of Chineese pork with mustard was unique and aromatic. All of the ingredients of the Kung Pao Chicken were diced the same size, even the chicken. The celery, carrots and of course peanuts, stood out. Although traditionally considered a spicy entrée, this was more mild and deep in flavor - a comfort food for sure. I realy enjoyed it! ...also very easy to eat with chop sticks! I have no complaints, this was Chinese food at its traditional best. But be aware, there is a $ .45 charge for paying with your debit card. You don't even know it until you sign the receipt! No big deal for me, Lucky Star's prices are more than reasonable ! Damn! I kept humming that background music in my head for an hour after leaving ! 4-Stars - Scott

The almond chicken was crispy, the kind of crispy where it was teetering on dry. My son liked the wonton soup app so much so that he wanted a 2nd serving and my hubs liked the veggie egg rolls. I eat Asian food all the time so I felt like it was standard Chinese food but next time I'll order something different. The staff were quick and there's plenty of parking since it's in the same pavillion as Trader Joe's and LA Fitness.

    Chow mein lunch special

3.6 stars Food was okay. General Tso's chicken and chicken chow mein were tasty but everything else was just okay. FYI- the lunch specials are a good deal but portions are pretty small. I had trouble ordering online and kept receiving error messages. I even tried calling the number on the website but was just told to refresh my browser.

I sort of debated between 3 and 4 stars. Depends on what you are looking for. Simple, sparsely visited Chinese place in the strip mall next to Trader Joe's. There are 2 other people here at 12:30. Traditional Chinese music going at a good volume. Old school decor. Obviously not a Michelin star outfit but the lunch specials are very reasonably priced and food delivered quickly. It's a true mom/pop so you order electronically via app and the poor gal races around covering the whole place herself. They are making a go of it though (respect!). The food was solid and satisfying on a freezing day outside. Probably won't be a frequent flyer but left satisfied today.

New owners took over about 18 months ago and I was excited, they claimed to keep the old recipes, while adding more items to the menu. On my first visit the portion was generous and the flavor was OK. The Hot and Sour was not the same, but I liked the Orange Chicken more. However, as I returned, portions got smaller, flavor got weaker and the chef ignored my requests for more heat and more seasoning. The last couple visits the food was flat out terrible and I now refuse to return. Unless they make significant changes, I don't see them remaining open. It's a slap in the face to the name, if you are not going to honor the original restaurant, CHANGE YOUR NAME.

I think overall the food was good. Like I was telling the owner I normally drive to Canada to get Chinese food, or San Fran for dim sum. I'm pretty hard to please. But since I like to support local, I'll bring my friends here another time for lunch. The decor was minimal but nice. From the outside it looked like it was closed, and like it was a home or doctors office. It's right next to a bikini barista. So we missed it the first time. It's a brick building. The tea was really good. The perfect amount of Chinese leaves, and it was nice and hot for a cold blistery day even if it's almost spring.

But for those in the know, Triumph Valley is really known for their dim sum menu! Off the beaten path, you have to take State Highway 167, as its just south of the large IKEA store. But definitely a culinary landmark if you are a constant diner of Chinese cuisine, and dim sum afficianado. There are only three dim sum, or dumpling lunch providers in or around the City of Renton (technically two). This is one of them, and if you are not early, it can get really crowded, especially on weekends. But the staff bravely soldiers-on with their dilligent service. The restaurant's ambiance takes advantage of its interior with strategic lighting in their dining hall. Very utilitarian, while trying to ensure a little bit of style. They also modernize the experience with electronic waiting and ordering system on portable touch screens. It actually helps the service. No paper. As for me, my focus is on the dim sum. All of my favorites are there. And, as diner of one, it was hard not to want to order everything. So, I ordered the "basics" of a dim sum lunch. One order of Shiu Mai, one order of Har Gow, and one order steamed BBQ Pork. It was pretty much all you need along with an order of tea, as well as a Diet Coke to wash it all down. There were other traditional dim sum selections, but I knew my tummy (and wallet) wouldn't absorb it all - as much as I would have liked. Steamed beancurd sheets, beef meatballs, steamed sticky rice in banana leaves... chicken feet, it was all there. The best way is to make a plan, and invite lots of freinds to make sure you can try EVERYTHING! Yes, there are other menu items, like I said, but for Dim Sum dining in Renton, this is the place!!!! We did eventually get seated about an hour later and got a big table with the rotating glass in the middle for our family-style eating. For it being really busy and people coming in and out everywhere inside, food came out even faster! I swear it took like 15 or so minutes for all the dishes we got to arrive, and they are huge portions. - Lemon chicken: I always ask for the sauce on the side for this one. This is the only place I know of that uses chicken breast for the meat and not chicken thighs like most other Chinese restaurants do. Chicken tempura is crispy and chicken itself is juicy and really hot. Lemon sauce came on a bigger-than-expected bowl. - Mustard green and sliced pork soup: we asked for this one without the salty egg. Essentially a very clean soup with tofu, veggies, egg whites and small pieces of sliced pork. - Lotus root with fresh squid and peanut: lotus roots were a little crunchy, pretty nice dish overall with the peanuts putting their nutty mark throughout the ingredients. - Salt and pepper sole fillet: very salty but to the point where you don't need any sort of sauce. Came in very piping hot. - Ong cai/water spinach: pretty standard for most Chinese restaurants. Clean and a needed veggie among all the fried and salty dishes we got. - Singaporean style noodles: one of my favorites to get. Curry taste is prevalent, and was maybe a little too spicy for my parents to eat. - Razor clams: not a fan of these but I didn't taste any sand grains when I had a bite, so this was cleaned very well. - Lamb pot: lamb was a little touch to chew, and the fried tofu skins carried a lot more flavor for some reason. This was a humongous meal and we were all very satisfied! From other visits we were considering getting their slow cooked herb soup for this visit but it would be $16 per person so we did pass on it. That being said, dishes here are priced reasonably, and portions are really huge. Highly recommend here for a great meal for large parties!
