This was so disappointing. I haven't had Lucky star in a long time. It's always been a favorite so for my Mother's Day dinner that's what I decided on spent $80 on the meal and headed home. The food was disgusting. pretty much inedible. The sweet-and-sour chicken was so overcooked. It couldn't even be chewed the sweet-and-sour chicken was burned and so crispy that it couldn't be chewed. The chicken chow mein was so overcooked that the noodles were just a mushy mess. The only thing that I could eat was the egg bar soup very frustrated about this I won't be reaching out to the restaurant.

Mongolian beef lunch special with bbq pork appetizer.

I can't believe I've never reviewed my Lucky Star! A neighborhood strip mall Chinese place family run and pretty popular with local diners. Note that most of these diners are the older white folks like myself. I've been going here occasionally for lunch for years from daughters playing softball tournaments nearby years ago and regular work of mine in the area. The wife pretty much runs the front end and she is great, hardworking, and polite. Her three kids have always had their own booth next to the POS table with their artwork and toys adorning the wall and table that they hang out in during time off from school while parents run the restaurant. They've always been well behaved and cute to watch. Now the oldest is a host! Pretty good performance too but still reverts to hanging with his siblings during low points. I usually order a Mongolian beef or occasionally another choice. What I like about their lunch special is that you pick your appetizer and soup and that includes a won ton soup option. Love those things compared to a usual Chinese lunch special. The beef is good but really heavy on onions and scallions! I love these but just too much for me. The rice could really be a bigger serving! A little bbq pork with a really good condiment portion is great and wonton soup average but still tasty. This is a solid three star place and I want to give a fourth but their food just doesn't quite get it there! But I'd recommend this to anyone in the area after a decent Chinese meal however the Hawaiian bbq place nearby has been getting my quick cheap lunch business lately as it's a better value for better food. Lucky Star is definitely a valued local establishment worth supporting.

Ma po Tofu

We were headed to Trader's Joe and was hungry. We decided to eat at the Chinese beside TJ. They served tea in a traditional pot and it was a good tea. Next came curry chicken. thin sliced tender chicken in an earthy deep flavored curry but with a hint of sweetness (tasted like fruit based). It has a nice warmth like a hug. We also got ma po tofu. my litmus test for a good Chinese restaurant. The verdict is beautiful crafted tofu in a deep luxurious brown gravy with ground pork. Not too spicy but definitely a bit different from the other spicy ma po tofu dishes. Highly recommend both dishes. Why? We had to order extra bowl of rice to sop up the gravy. Yum!

Jumbo shrimp

I ordered Jumbo shrimp and I got home took a bite and got no shrimp only the tail. This is not after I ate it it is before. All of them were like this.

My seafood noodles. This is a fraud. Won't be returning

Food was too sweet, teriyaki like. I ordered the seafood chow mein. The noodles came out like as if it's a teriyaki noodle. The sauce is a sweet soy based. Only a few scallops in there that's a size of a dime, maybe smaller. Two tiny azz shrimp that's about a size of the tip of my pinky. Three shriveled calamari. Service was sub at best. The dinning room was occupied by three tables, kind of sus. But the health rating scores were EXCELLENT. Food came out piping hot, hence the two-star review. Sorry but I won't be back.

Blue Chow mein was really horrible

Service was great ! The food wasn't as good as we have had before. Oh well. Delivered quickly.

Ambiance - so traditional Chinese

"Well, bless my lucky star!" I stopped in at 2PM for 'lunch' (lunch menu pricing extends to 3:30PM). Lucky Star is a modest strip-mall restaurant with a very, very traditional Chinese 1950s ambiance. You enter the front door into a glass box that in turn has an entry door to the restaurant. The carpet is a faded red and green Chinese Paisley design. The booths are solid red textured plastic and the tables are a low contrast pastel purple. Low-watt yellow lamps hang over each booth and the quiet music playing in the background is the same we've all heard a million times (it repeated over and over for an hour!) All in all, Lucky Star is one big Déjà Vu experience. It doesn't stop there. An ornate heavy menu is already on your table. Shortly, a teapot of fresh brewing tea arrives, and the waitress takes your order (I ordered Kung Pao Chicken). The Kung Pao chicken comes with your choice of soup, appetizer, rice and fortune cookie. Considering that hot tea is included, this is a real value at $9.50. All of the lunch menu entrées range from $8.50 to $11.50, and the variety offers something for everyone. I 'thank my lucky stars' that I ordered won-ton soup, but was served hot'n'sour soup by mistake - best mistake ever, the hot'n'sour was absolutely delicious, had all the ingredients and flavor we all remember and love. I chose the BBQ Pork appetizer. Three large slices came chilled with traditional sesame seed, hot mustard and catsup sauce. The flavor of Chineese pork with mustard was unique and aromatic. All of the ingredients of the Kung Pao Chicken were diced the same size, even the chicken. The celery, carrots and of course peanuts, stood out. Although traditionally considered a spicy entrée, this was more mild and deep in flavor - a comfort food for sure. I realy enjoyed it! ...also very easy to eat with chop sticks! I have no complaints, this was Chinese food at its traditional best. But be aware, there is a $ .45 charge for paying with your debit card. You don't even know it until you sign the receipt! No big deal for me, Lucky Star's prices are more than reasonable ! Damn! I kept humming that background music in my head for an hour after leaving ! 4-Stars - Scott

The almond chicken was crispy, the kind of crispy where it was teetering on dry. My son liked the wonton soup app so much so that he wanted a 2nd serving and my hubs liked the veggie egg rolls. I eat Asian food all the time so I felt like it was standard Chinese food but next time I'll order something different. The staff were quick and there's plenty of parking since it's in the same pavillion as Trader Joe's and LA Fitness.

I've only had a seafood Lo Mein to go but the price was okay and the seafood was an 8 out of 10. I'll do pork next time.

For lunch, we paid the $1 bump for wonton soup, the small wonton was bland and the broth tasted like powdered stock instead of bone broth. I had the Almond Fried Chicken and it was chewy and tough. I told the server that and her reply was, I don't like it either. No offer to replace the meal or get me a smaller portion of something else. Instead, she suggested 2 dishes to try if I return. Again, the first lunch was pretty good, so I wrote the last experience off as a fluke, but I got all the confirmation I needed when we returned for dinner later that week. This time, I had the Mongolian Beef Dinner. I went back to the Sour and Sour Soup, because it wasn't hot and was way too sour. Again, they got my order wrong, so he took my plate back to the kitchen, before I could stop him. 5 minutes later he brought the plate back and the entrée was cold. Dinner came on 2 plates, one plate was 80% Chow Mein and 20% rice. The Mongolian Beef came out on a saucer and was a portion smaller than you would expect for lunch. I told our server that my food was cold and he just looked at me blank. For a Saturday night, we were the only ones there, the place was dead. The bar does not appear to be open, maybe they had to apply for a new license, but what that tells me is people probably came her to drink more than eat. The website and sign in the window say they have 20 years of Chinese restaurant experience, but it doesn't show in the service, quality or flavor of the food. I was really hoping these guys would restore good Chinese food in South King, but I am going thumbs down and reducing their rating from 3 to a single star. I will also say despite being interested in trying another dish, I don't want to be further disappointed here. Nothing taste made to order and I expect more of a restaurant when you tell then food isn't hot or fresh.

We came around dinner time on a weekday and it wasn't busy at all, but it did take a while for the food to come out. We got the steamed spareribs, truffle shu mai, pork and taro shu mai, fried mochi with pork, sticky rice, and salted egg yolk mochi. I loved absolutely everything so much! Flavors were spot on, textures were amazing, and they were also really unique. I loved the truffle flavor on the shu mai, and the ham sui gok was done so well here too. In hindsight, I should have realized that a Cantonese restaurant wouldn't likely get this dish right. The "Peking duck" at Triumph Valley was actually Hong Kong style roast duck. A plate came out with the duck skin. The duck meat was nowhere on this plate. Traditionally, Peking duck meat is served in thin slices and layered under the duck skin. A large bowl was set on the table. There it was, chopped through the bone into chunks with skin, meat, and bone intact. This is a signature style of serving Hong Kong roast duck. Unsurprisingly, the flavor was not pure, natural duck flavor. Instead, it tasted of Hong Kong style with 5 spice seasoning including star anise. It was also a pain to eat because of this poor carving style. Triumph Valley didn't use the traditional thin wraps either, opting for easier steamed bao buns. Thin pancakes are the traditional choice because their light, paper-thin texture doesn't overpower the crispness and rich fat of the duck skin. Triumph Valley used bao buns because they are easier to source (frequently purchased frozen) and are simpler for kitchens to prep than handmade pancakes. Big waste of $50. Avoid the "Peking duck" if choosing to dine at this Hong Kong restaurant because it is falsely advertised there and will leave you disappointed if you have experience with actual Peking duck and appreciate its natural flavors.

The smell is overpowering. 80%-90% of taste is based on smell. All I could smell was chemical cleaner and could barely taste the food. When the bus person passed by me, the smell was even worse because of the cleaner soaked rag. He was spraying it straight out of the bottle so it was full strength, not diluted. I'm pretty sure if you read the instructions on any harsh chemical like that (I think this was ZEP, by the dark purple color), instructions are to dilute it and to rinse or wipe off with water. I've very sure they do neither here. You shouldn't be using any kind of smelly, harsh chemcial to clean tables in a restaurant. Quat santizer doesn't smell and is the standard practice. Whoever is selling ZEP in this area is making a killing apparently. (I can't dine in at Triumph Valley for the same reason). Harsh chemicals shouldn't be anywhere near food. Think about that when you rescue a wayward dumpling when it bounces onto the table. yuck. Having said that, I expected the beef noodles soup to be more flavorful. The broth was just okay, not as deeply flavored as I would've expected. And the meat was just barely tender enough, but not that impressive either. Fried spring rolls were very oily and the filling was severely overcooked. Complete mush. Not good. I wish I could say better things, but I barely finished half my meal because of the chemical smell. $14.99 for beef noodle soup is a good deal if you can actually taste it. $6.25 not a good deal for mushy, oily spring rolls.
