My first time trying this place. To be honest one of the things that held me back was that coming from Maple Valley, you had to make a left turn against traffic. My concerns were abated when I saw that there is a U-turn lane with adequate room for a quick turnaround. I ordered the house special fried rice and salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings were perfectly cooked to a golden brown with just the right amount of seasoning. They were huge! I've had wings from many places, and these are some of the largest I've ever had. The house special fried rice was a huge portion and delicious. Not overcooked or dried out at all. Very flavorful with chicken, pork, shrimp. The portion was enough for two people. The interior of the restaurant was spotless. I got there a few minutes early to pick up my orderand the tables and floor were immaculate. Really friendly staff, decor is exactly what you would think an American Chinese restaurant would look like, and the food is ok. Went to dinner with a bunch of girlfriends. We all ordered a dinner entree which came with a ton of food. The Mongolian beef was good but not really flavorful. Same with the fried rice, sweet & sour pork and hot & sour soup. They weren't bad, they just weren't fantastic either. I would probably go back if someone recommended to meet there but it's not a place that I would be like "I have to go there again." We have been coming here for over a year now, and won't gone to any other, we come from the Renton Highlands. Last Friday during a very busy lunch time we showed up with 14 people (we did give a heads up for 10) the owner worked her butt off and cooks in back, her husband and son cooked amazing food! she got all of our orders correct and food was hot and tasty. My favorite Chinese American takeout in this area. Been going here for years and I know exactly what I'm expecting when I order food from here. The chicken chow mein is basically chicken lo mein that I've been used to from all across America using thicker soba noodles. Some restaurants use the thin noodles which I hate. It's just weird that this area all calls it chow mein and you only see lo mein farther from the Seattle region, but I digress. The proportions are really generous and can actually be stretched a few meals over a couple days. I've ordered numerous favorites that can be found from other Chinese American takeout all across America such as General Tso's chicken, sweet and sour chicken nuggets, pepper beef, wonton soup, and pork fried rice. And you get complimentary rice too which some restaurants are criminally charging extra for. Sometimes I just want Chinese fast food takeout that is 100x better than that Panda Express garbage down the road and nothing as bougie as the authentic cuisine from the ID or Bellevue on nights when I don't want to cook and this place hits the spot. The only reason I ate here is because I invited my nephew and his wife and they live right down the street, so it is convenient for them. The food is so so, but nothing to write home about. My wife and I live in Puyallup and if we feel like Chinese food we go to Yen Ching in Lakewood which is really good. When it was time to pay they presented me a slip with the Amount, Tip and Total. I added a tip and signed the credit card receipt. Once I had signed they gave me the overview of what we had ordered. My eyes are not so good anymore and it is kind of dark in the restaurant, so I did not take a good look at the overview. When I arrived back in Puyallup I put on my reading glasses and noticed that they already added an 18% tip for themselves without telling me. Long story short I gave them a tip on top of a tip. At honest restaurants they tell you that they have already included the tip, but not at Lucky Star Chinese. Our server was pretty quick but had zero personality or customer service skills. She barely said a word to us. We ordered the egg foo young, shrimp fried rice, and the Kung Pao chicken dinner which included appetizers and soup. Again, nothing was spectacular or even memorable. Panda Express would have been tastier on many levels. Not a 1 Star place because it wasn't flat out terrible. But I will not be wasting my money or time here again. Less than mediocre, at best. I asked for my sweet and sour pork to be unbreaded bx of a gluten allergy and the hostess told me that I could take the bread off myself. Gluten is still on my pork even if I peel it off myself. I even burned my fingers on the hot oil. The reason why they don't serve it unbreaded is bx they don't want you to see the pathetic serving size of meat. What a rip off. Like seriously. Last time coming to this establishment. [For now]. I ate here a few months ago and ordered the stir fried seafood & vegetables. Most the time when i've ordered this at other places it was either 2 greasy or salty. This was neither. It was fresh tasting, not overcooked and delicately seasoned. It was a busy lunch crowd, and there was just 1 gal serving EVERYONE, plus taking to go orders and the cashier. Large portions of food for sure. With their dinner combo, your entree comes with; sweet & sour chicken, BBQ pork fried rice, and choice of soup. It's a massive portion when factoring in the size of the entree itself. It's not quite large enough to split between two people, but bring your appetite for sure. I ordered the Mandarin Chicken, which was supposed to be spicy, but didn't have much heat. They do use white meat chicken though, and that was a big plus! I purchased a "for delivery" order at Lucky Star. I ordered the complete "individual dinner", ($23), beef broccoli, fried rice, egg roll, and also a side of Chow Mien, ($15). When you eat at a Chinese restaurant it's usually such an amount that you have enough left over to take home for next day's meal. I got a dinner the size of a very small lunch. Now for the food. With all the ingredients and spices that go into Chinese cooking it always has that wonderful distinct flavor that makes you come back for more. This order just didn't have that flavor. I will give them credit that it was eh, semi fair bland, but most definitely not the traditional Chinese flavor. It was something else, a really different flavor, and all items on the plate were full of liquids. At first glance I wondered if I had been sent some kind of a stew. Finished the beef broccoli and chow mien and the whole bottom of the plate was left with a liquid. Never ever experienced that before! I was REALLY VERY ALARMED with the Won Ton Soup. It scared me with the dumplings because something about them just didn't taste right! Kind of a metal/chemical taste and I'm thinking what did I just swallow!! I would have done a whole lot better buying my dinner at Safeway's China Express. They should remove the word "Chinese" and just say Lucky Star Restaurant because it most definitely isn't Chinese cooking, it's really something very different.
