    Cleopatra Wrap
    Aya R.

Dining method: Catering Item(s) ordered: I ate the Cleopatra wrap, but we ordered several others. The review: The cleopatra wrap was brimming with tabouli (tabbouleh?) and flavor. For a vegan option, it proved very filling and flavorful. That being said, the falafel was very dry and, in the middle of a work meeting, that might not be the best to have in your throat. The catering arrived slightly late into the meeting, so I would just make sure they know if there's a hard deadline. Wonderful service. Everyone enjoyed a variety of the other wraps and sandwiches with meat, and said they were very good. I would totally go back to see what the actual restaurant looks like, and would love to try one of the Greek wraps next!

I tried their turkey burger with "cranberry mayo" and they slapped canned cranberry sauce with some mayo mixed in. What a disappointment. I talked to an employee and they did nothing to remedy this issue.

    Chicken Gyro Basket!

I came in for a late lunch and was glad I did! I read reviews online and I had to try. I ordered the Chicken Gyro Basket which I seen was mentioned a lot. It was so good! To start the gyro tasted great. The tzatziki sauce was so good. The addition of the tasty homemade french fries made this a very filling meal! I highly recommend giving the Chicken Gyro Basket a try! I look forward to returning and trying more!

Things go keep in mind: - No tables here! Not a big issue but not exactly the best place for 5 people to catch up. There's a row of seats along the counter at the window (maybe 10 total). Much more of a pick-up to-go place. - Saw tons of cops come here to grab dinner. My friend made a good point that any restaurant where you see a lot of cops or EMT workers means it's definitely a great local spot - they will know the neighborhood better than just about anyone. - We could all tell a lot of the desserts were Costco-bought, being big Costco fans ourselves. (Recognized the brownies, saw the packaged cookies on the shelf, and the chocolate cake definitely tasted familiar) I feel like I can't really give a rating on these items since they don't make them in-house. Can't comment on the cheesecake & baklava, maybe they make those. Cost: $11.75 for a wrap & curly fries. Very inexpensive, very quick, & lots of options. Must-haves: Fresh Fish & Chips, Mac & Cheese bites, Spicy Curly fries (if you don't mind that it's not too spicy). The meat was good but I would have loved even more sauce to bring everything together! The ingredients weren't distributed the best - a layer of meat, a layer of shredded lettuce, a couple slices of tomato, and sauce drizzled on top. SOUPS * Lentil soup ($3.95 for a bowl) - 3 stars pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mamas-place-boston?select=hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw#hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw Interesting that they gave those small crackers that normally come with clam chowder. The soup was pretty thick, lots of good texture from the lentil, but it was really bland in flavor. SIDE ORDERS * Spicy Curly Fries ($3.75) - 3.5 stars pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mamas-place-boston?select=hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw#eDFRF0b9kWT0caIKnm0aAg Absolutely perfect texture. An evenly slightly thick layer of flaky crisp. You bite through it to a warm soft inner part. Just perfectly thick. I just wish these were more spicy! Definitely could've used more flavor. You do get a giant serving. * Mac & Cheese Bites ($4.95) - 4 stars pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mamas-place-boston?select=hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw#UPcasjjpqu0EgTEi5Vwzuw cross-section: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mamas-place-boston?select=hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw#Sk8ZmZ_uiCDwPTGdZNJg1g You get a smaller serving, but this was really great. Triangles of mac & cheese (creamy, soft, fantastic), surrounded in a thick perfectly crisped layer of batter. The cocktail sauce went great with this. FISH & SHRIMP * Fresh Fish & Chips - 4 stars (w/ fries, coleslaw, & homemade tartar sauce. $9.25) pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mamas-place-boston?select=hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw#j_3kEFwPl0f9E_QCWUER1A Wow, probably the best quality fish I've ever had in a fish & chips dish! Really tender and soft. The batter was a little soft and soggy, though. The chips were even fish-flavored, probably friend in the same oil! However, while the middle part was soft and chewy, the outer part once again didn't have enough crisp, unlike the curly fries. You do get a giant plate and overall this was pretty great. MAMA'S WRAPS * Cleopatra's Wrap - 3 stars (hummus, tabouli, falafel & tahini sauce, cucumber, tomatoes. $6.95) pic: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mamas-place-boston?select=hSvX00xGkjnc75TqIcZ-Bw#NE9HntahR-P1m6a0-q7gqQ I thought this was an amazing deal, and you do get a huge wrap for this great price. Remember that you aren't getting any meat, which I was aware of. However, this IS a cold wrap (I thought the falafel might be toasted!), and the wrap itself was VERY stale and hard to bite through. This made it really hard to enjoy, especially since the hummus was absolutely delicious, very thick and fresh-tasting, the dominant flavor, and went so well with all the other ingredients.

We ordered the meatballs, the souvla of the day and the salad. Everything was so tasty. You can't go wrong with anything here. The table next to us had the huge sampler which was about $240 but was one of every dish on the menu. This is a perfect choice for six to 8 people. Service was super friendly. They left a large bottle of water on the table, which I love. The restrooms were clean and well stocked. Go here! You won't regret it.

The menu refers to these as "Greek cheese bread" but somehow that doesn't do it justice - these were immensely pillowy and cheesy, with an amazing crust, with homemade honey butter on the side. I could have had just these for dinner and been satisfied. They really nailed the bread. My other favorites: 1. Hipiti: spicy whipped feta with crispy potatoes on the side. I don't do well with spice but I absolutely loved this. 2. Marouli: winter lettuce with the most amazing vinaigrette dressing. My only knock to this is, presentation-wise, they serve it with half of the plate empty and the other half with salad. I don't understand why restaurants do this because - one, it only highlights the smaller portion and two, we're just going to mix the salad all around in the bowl anyway. 3. Boudeto: daily catch in a beautiful tomato broth. For a seafood dish at a restaurant in Back Bay, this was priced at a fairly reasonable $28. The only dish that fell a little flat for me was the tzatziki - needed a bit more seasoning. As it was, I was eating mostly just plain yogurt. The table-side preparation was cool, though. The space is its own visual dinner, there's simply a lot to look at (including a drawing of Poseidon riding a surf board). We got the big table in the back, which was a beautiful glass structure with a whole terrarium underneath. We couldn't stop marveling at it throughout the meal. Our waiter was wonderful - very helpful recommendations, came by to check on us often even though we were pretty far in the back, super patient with our questions. Hard to get reservations but worth it! Don't bother driving / trying to find parking unless you're willing to eat a hefty garage fee, it's Back Bay.

The best authentic Greek food in the city!…read more Kava is well known for having incredible food, and it hits every time. It can be hard to get a reservation as you can only book up to 24 hours in advance, but we managed to walk in on a Saturday for lunch as a party of two! Located in a beautiful part of South End with some, but not a ton of street parking, the restaurant has a small space decorated with a "sea" theme with ropes and a big painting of a sailor. The food is the main draw, and the highlight is really authentically Greek dishes. We tried the Pantzaria (baked beets), kolokithakia (zucchini chips), kalamarakia tis skaras (grilled calamari), keftedes (Greek meatballs), and horiatiki (tomato/cucumber/feta salad). The highlights were definitively the zucchini chips which were so crunchy with a yummy dipping sauce or the calamari which were seasoned in this yummy caper oil sauce, or the keftedes which were perfectly cooked. The beets were pretty basic unseasoned beets, but I love beets and really enjoyed this as a low-acid side to the other food. Lastly, we tried the Greek coffee which came in little espresso cups and was soooo good, would highly recommend. We also have a severe anaphylactic nut/peanut allergy and they were easily able to accommodate and so knowledgeable! Overall we had an amazing time and will certainly be back.

Got to head over to Kava for a second round today and try some things I did not get around to last…read moretime, so here are my thoughts: The food REMAINS IMPECCABLE. I was obsessed with the octopus last time and it was once again grilled to perfection with excellent acidity. The zucchini chips were delightful (even as someone who hates zucchini's). The feta psiti was a comfort per usual. What blew me away and I was so excited to try was the lamb chops. They were cooked to perfection, the look was closer to a medium-well (we asked for medium) but the meat was still perfectly juicy and spiced. The mousaka was also lovely, I have only had this dish homemade and it certainly held its own... definitely had a homemade feel with a generous meat portion. The Roka salad was also lovely. As far as drinks go, I enjoyed my aperol spritz and my spicy margarita a lot, I especially like the tsipouro having tried it as a shot the first time, but I think if I were to go again, I might go for wine for a more consistent liquor content. Now let's talk about service. I want to preface that certain things would 1000% be overlooked had we reserved for a busier time, but we went in 15 minutes after opening and by the looks of it, there were more than enough servers for the tables filled in the patio. The first time that I tried Kava, part of the excellent experience was our server. They were such a sweet person who really took the time to bond with us, brought us a round on the house, and just checked on us and made sure we were always doing good. Today really lacked that element. As soon as we sat down, the server informed us that they were out of three small plates, which happens, but not 15 minutes after opening as this was the case. Nonetheless, we were able to order a lot of yummy things, so fine. We then asked if it would be possible to angle the umbrella some way or move to a different table so I would be covered from the scorching sun this afternoon, and our server said "just wait ten minutes, the sun will move behind the building..." I understand that I asked for a patio and obviously you cannot control the sun nor the weather, but I just feel like the situation could be handled a little better -- at least a better response. Then, my dad ordered a beer which was completely warm. We asked for another which was luke warm, so then he just asked for a cocktail instead. The server was kind enough to bring a cold beer on the house later, but again, right at open, you kind of expect things to be in order. Overall, our server was just kind of... there, not super attentive nor pleasant. Another thing, I tried to get around the Resy "day before" policy because the reservations for Sunday opened during my graduation ceremony on Saturday and I wanted to make sure I get my table especially as my parents were catching a flight, so I emailed management in advance per the host's instructions upon calling. We went back and forth rather unnecessarily (with very delayed replies on their part), then I got completely ghosted... Not sure why. I was eventually able to get a table by calling the host after my ceremony on Saturday and they were incredibly accommodating, but they also noted that this was a graduation celebration, yet there was no acknowledgment... I had a graduation dinner last year at a different establishment in Boston and our server went beyond to ensure a great experience and even brought out a hand-written card with our check. These details could really really help the Kava experience in my opinion. Finally, the servers bringing out the dishes were completely confused. Almost every single dish was brought to the wrong table before reaching us and we could see them running around the patio with our order... rather unprofessional. Ultimately, it is the service that leads me to dock a star from my previous rating. Had the food not been as consistently fantastic, I definitely would be docking more.
