Catrina at the bar and whoever the badass in the kitchen was made this one hell of a last meal in Baltimore. We scooted over to the Canton area for one last seafood fest before returning to the hot dumpster that is the DFW metroplex, and we could not have been happier with our decision. We were also thankful to this place for being open, as so many in that area are closed on either Sundays, Sundays and Mondays, or until dinnertime every day. From looking at the pics on the business page, as well as its hallowed spot on the menu, we each went with the Seafood Club as the entree. The starter was a half dozen oysters, which were shucked by the hardworking Hayden. The oysters were fresh and tasty - they also fit the flavor profiles presented on the menu. I ordered the Bluepoint and Shooting Point oysters, each variety being both sweet and briny. But then the sandwich, whoa, that damn sandwich. It was a colossal collection of crab cakes and shrimp salad nestled between layers of bread, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and bacon. It visually and spiritually presented an eating challenge that we contemplated while I started in on the delicious fries. Solution: treat the top crab cake layer as a stand alone sandwich. Then you can either eat the second shrimp layer as an open faced sandwich, or (and I just thought of this) you can eat both crab cake layers then fold together the two remaining shrimp layers into a third half sandwich. OR - you could just split this sandwich meal with someone you really, really value in your life. It is ALOT of food. No matter what, you won't come away disappointed. I loved this place and the experience here. Thank you, Mama's! read more

Service was great our servers was very knowable and had great energy . The food was delicious. I ordered the Mamas Lamb Chops.. My Partner ordered the Snow crabs Clusters but they was a little small but the drinks for Happy Hours was great.. Place was very clean and very upbeat can't wait to come back read more

Great crab cakes. I love the little ones on the appetizer list. The restaurant itself is really cute.

I must start by saying they are in the process of closing. The service was lacking in any type of care and the staff that cleaned our table before we could sit was extremely rude. The food was not on the level I had been used to before. Overall I'm disappointed they are closing for good and the experience I had definitely showed that they are just trying to make it till the end! read more

This is a MUST VISIT while in Baltimore! The place is so nice, the music the decor, etc makes you feel part of Baltimore., Server and runners were friendly and helpful, menu has so many options for the whole family... and most importantly they have local delicious seafood. We tried many different items and they were ALL amazing... we started with soups: Seafood chowder and Maryland Crab soup, they were 2 diff preparations and both were really delicious. After we had the hot lobster roll and the Bouillabaisse and the freshness and flavors were out of this world. We honestly did not tried more food because we were so full but everything on the menu looked very good. The kids had friend shrimp and mac and cheese and they really loved it. read more

My friend and I came here for brunch and were sat outside. We put in crushes which took a while to arrive. My orange crush tasted like plain orange juice so not much alcohol there. We shared the grilled oysters and got 2 each of the three toppings offered (it came with a total of 6 oysters). All of them were delicious with my fave being the smoked paprika butter. As my main, I ordered the Seafood Omelette and my friend got their Crab Cake Benny. My omelette was ok. It didn't have a lot of flavor but the potato hash was pretty good. The service was quite slow as everything took a long time to arrive and our server never came to check on us after placing our orders. She also dumped our paycheck on us in the middle of eating our entrees without saying a word. Not great service here but a decent seafood restaurant if you're around the area and want something better than plain bar food to eat. read more

We sat at the bar on the first floor, but noticed that the restaurant is up a flight of stairs. There's also a large outdoor dining area adjacent to the street. The bartender came over as soon as we sat down and gave us menus. We chose to start with drinks; the Deep Eddy Crush and the grapefruit crush. I know, grapefruit is not in season in June, but there was refreshing and fresh (NOT canned) grapefruit juice in my Grapefruit Crush, along with a juicy grapefruit wedge on the rim. The Deep Eddy had muddled fresh basil and blueberries. Both drinks - highly recommend! Hubby came for the Cream of crab soup and broiled crab cake sandwich. There were lumps of crabmeat not only on top but also throughout the cup of soup! It was VERY tasty. The crab cake was jumbo lump, very little filler and perfectly seasoned. See our pictures! If you're looking for a great Baltimore crab cake and/or cream of crab soup, this is your place! Rolls usually are no big deal, but the crab cake roll was fresh and sweet. The fries were a perfect marriage of crunchy outside and meaty potato center. I chose the Tuna Tatare appy for my entree and the ahi tuna was fresh and very tasty. I'm usually not a sriracha fan, but the aioli perfectly complimented the tuna. It was sooooo good! Service was friendly and professional; the bartender was near but not over attentive. Go for the food, stay for the drinks! read more

I would have probably gone 4.5 stars, as I did ask to have my Cream of Crab soup reheated, but the soup was yum, delish, & service by Matt (photo) was premier; absolutely engaging chatter. He knows what customer service is allThe Great Gal, likewise, really enjoyed her Seafood Chowder. I had asked my sister about going somewhere with Crabcakes since this is what Maryland is known for, so she made reservations at Mama's on the Half Shell for a Sunday brunch. We were running late by almost 20 minutes and still accommodated us letting us know there was an immediate reservation after ours. This was super generous of them especially considering the limited seating they had inside, the first floor was mainly bar seating and there were maybe 8-10 tables on the upstairs floor? Regardless, the waiters were super kind and helpful and did not rush us at all when we arrived. To top it off the food was absolutely worth it! When looking at the menu I could not choose what to eat there were so many great seafood options! But I opted for the Crabcake appetizer and the Lobster Hash. The crabcake was on the more expensive end ($30), but was mainly chunks of grab meat and so delicious! The lobster hash was also quite good with chunks of lobster mixed with the potato chunks. I also liked that the mixed fruit was berries! I would definitely recommend Mama's On The Half Shell if you're looking for some Baltimore Crabcakes! Food: Amazingly good! The options were plenty and I would definitely eat here again! Service: Fantastic! The restaurant accommodated us even though we were late and they had limited seating. Parking: Street Parking Pets: Unsure. There is outdoor seating, but I'm not sure if pets are allowed. Outside Seating: There's a small space for seating outside on a nice day. read more

Mama's on the Half Shell is a true Canton institution! It's been here for 20 yrs and still going strong. I worked in the area many years ago so haven't visited in awhile. A friend recently moved to Canton and I suggested a visit to Mama's was a must! It was 10:00 on Saturday night and we were fortunate to find street parking right in front of the restaurant. Beautiful weather so we sat on the ample patio. Our waiter was nice and answered all our questions. We both decided on the Here For A Good Thyme cocktail. It had a good smoky taste and was refreshing. We also both ordered the Maryland Rockfish and what an excellent choice that was!! Rockfish, broiled & stuffed w/ Mama's crab cake. It was accompanied by rice pilaf and sautéed beans, and an Old Bay butter. I switched out the beans for their seasonal vegetable-squash, zucchini and carrots. This dish was sooo good! The fish was so fresh and the crab cake was well seasoned. The vegetables were also yum! We both had leftovers after and it was just as delicious the next day! Some restaurants can't keep a great rep when they've been in the game for 20 years but I'm glad Mama's still rocks! read more

My friends came to town to visit me, and we decided to come here for a late lunch. I've walked by here a couple of times, and it's always pretty packed. When we got here around 1:30 pm on a Thursday, there was a decent amount of people there. We decided to sit inside, it is still a little loud and a lot of flies we still had to swat away occasionally. It might have been better outside. Our waitress was fine, not super friendly but pretty efficient. We ordered the scallops appetizer and half a dozen oysters to start, then I got the crab cake sandwich (broiled), my friends got the combo steamer and the shrimp fettuccine. My friend loved the oysters (saying it wasn't briney at all). I enjoyed the scallops appetizer, it came with 3 scallops on a potato pancake thing and creamed spinach. We really liked it. Our food came out a little later. I enjoyed the crab cake sandwich, it was pretty good It wasn't the best crab cake I've ever had, but it was decent! Tomato, lettuce, and tar tar sauce on the side. The fries were delicious and hot/fresh. The combo steamer came with a lot of food and was a great deal. I ate the oysters Rockefeller it came with and enjoyed them. My friends ate all of their food and was so happy their first meal in Baltimore was at Mama's Half Shell. I would definitely come back. We can luckily walk here as parking is pretty busy/crowded. I can see why it gets crowded! read more

The blue crab dip is a must!!!! Savory and scrumptious. I savored every bite. It is filling so be careful with ordering all your meals at once. (I had to take home my main entree). The mussels were also saucy and lovely. It has meat sausage mixed in as well. The seafood club sandwich is yummy. It was a tall tower sandwich. It will make you full. Went to brunch and had a fabulous meal. Cream of crab soup, raw oysters, fried oysters, shrimp salad sandwich and stuffed shrimp. Everything was tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. Service was very good. Please note we went around 11:30 but called first because there were no reservations available until 2:30. So glad I called prior and they said we didn't need a rest. One of the best crab cakes I've ever had in my life. The seafood here is unmatched. While Baltimore is known for seafood and you probably can't go bad at a lot of seafood spots, Mama's stands out form the rest. We snagged a table outside and were seated right away and attended to quickly. It's a nice ambiance outside, though parking can be quite challenging. Inside. It's a bit dark and old-bar feeling. Would highly recommend this spot for a great meal. read more

Disappointed, to say the least. They have such a pleasant staff, a warm and welcoming environment, that it's difficult for me to write this unappealing review, but I have to report my experience so you can make an informed decision. Here goes... Every since I moved to Baltimore, people have raved about this restaurant. Finally, after searching endlessly for chargrilled, Parmesan oysters, I settled on this place. The pictures looked enticing, and the reviews were great! Why not? Well... the grilled oysters were the nastiest I've ever had. There was a gummy, lemon, parmesan sauce spread over the oysters. It was bitter and the consistency overpowered the hardly grilled oysters. Cheese was sprinkled atop, grilled for a beautiful presentation, but I had to send them back due to their horrible taste. I also had the cod fish and chips and the wings. Wings were huge, cooked decently. No complaints. The fish was fried and battered nicely. Needed some more seasoning (IMO), and the fries were very basic... frozen fries. Nothing impressive. The customer service was excellent! The whole staff was warm and welcoming (reason for 2 versus 1 star). I wish I could rate and patronize based on that alone, but I can't. I'm addition, the bar smells of old bar smell... a dirty mop, semi-mildew aroma. The bar top was sticky (although seemingly, recently cleaned). I would suggest investing in better quality cleaning materials and revising the oyster recipe. I hope this review helps you, reader! read more

First impressions are everything.....right? Well if that is the case normally you put your best foot forward. Well I won't say they didn't try but just keep reading and I'll explain. Walked in and since I haven't been here before I wasn't sure if it was seat yourself or if there was a hostess. So I politely waited and then after 6 mins of standing there, I asked the waiter that had looked at myself and a friend at least 5 times if this is a choose your own seat or do we wait for the hostess. I was notified that there was a hostess but since downstairs was pretty full we could find a table upstairs. So upstairs we go and then it seemed the folks up there were confused we walked up but as I always am, I was smiling and asked if there is a certain table they would prefer. They showed me 2 options since it was only two of us. Perfect, just wished it started off a bit more welcoming. Fast forward to good ordering. Our waitress was very pleasant. She took our drink orders and then our appetizers. Ordered the lobster egg rolls (not on the restaurant menu) and then one of us ordered the cream of crab soup and a spinach salad which is on the restaurant week menu. For the entrees we ordered the London broil and the Blackberry salmon. For dessert we both ordered bread pudding. Normally you would think for restaurant week, that when you choose the best of the best to reel new customers in so they want to come back. Once the food started flowing I was very confused on the food options of why would they want to choose some of her options. The blackberry salmon, was over cooked and putting jam on top of overcooked fish is not a way to sell a customer to come back. The dry bread pudding was a bit off as well. There was a couple next to us that stated the same about the bread pudding, so I knew it was just us. Below are my takes in short of the food. *Lobster egg rolls - delicious. The breading was a bit wet for my liking but overall it was delicious. *Cream of crab soup - delicious, decent portion of crab inside. *Spinach salad - goat cheese, beets, peaches, spinach, and raspberry vinaigrette....it was a very strange tasting salad...my opinion the sweetness of the dressing was throwing me off. *London broil - was told it was delicious *Blackberry Salmon - extremely strange. I thought it was coming with a sauce type deal but it was blackberry jam on overcooked salmon.. the sides of the potatoes and broccoli were the show stoppers. *Bread pudding - HUGE, but extremely dry. All in all, I was told this is a great restaurant and I would agree it seems decent. There is room for them to refine some things. Hostess or at least signage to assist new customers of what to do when coming in, preparation of food, were to main concerns. Otherwise our waitress was a pleasure and same when it came to the men that brought our food out. They were very pleasant. read more

This has been, and continues to be, one of my most favorite Baltimore restaurants. I've been a patron of Mama's since 2009. Whenever people visit me from out of town and tell me they want crab cakes, I take them to Mama's. Whenever I want amazing seafood in a great environment, I go to Mama's. I see myself continuing to patronize this restaurant as long as it's around. This particular visit was prompted by my mother visiting me. She requested crab cakes and we made plans to get over to Mama's over the course of her trip. We arrived around 5pm and my mom chose to eat outside (bad mistake - I froze my arse off). She of course ordered crab cakes, and I ordered broiled catfish and a double order of veggies as my side. Everything was amazing, including the service, per the norm. They did have a limited menu due to Covid, but that was fine. I'm trying to eat more healthily and didn't want seafood skins as an option I couldn't refuse! My mom did try to order creme brûlée but they were out, unfortunately. Otherwise couldn't have asked for a better visit...well, except eating indoors. read more

I wish I could just review with something like "A Must" or "Go Here!" but I can't. I am going to come back here again and again. The entire experience from start to finish was ideal. We asked for an outdoor table because it was a beautiful sunny day. Check. We asked for a fair spread of each type of oyster they had. Check. We asked for drinks and drinks again. Check. The serve, although new to Mama's, was super helpful and knew his oysters well. My best friend and I each prefer different styles and he helped us with which ones would be best for us individually. We were safely distanced from other parties. We were able to enjoy the full sun which made us both so happy. The service was great from start to finish. Overall it's awesome and you must go! read more

Wow, it only took 6 years for me to come back here and the mussels are as good as I remembered. We got the Mussels with garlic white wine sauce (so tasty), Baltimore crab soup, and baked oysters. The mussels are hands down still what I think of when I think of Mama's and lived up to my expectations. The baked oysters were also delicious, we got them with a nice parmesan crust on top and they came on a bed of salt rocks which kept them hot and toasty. I was a little disappointed in the Baltimore crab soup and will not be ordering this again (the majority of it was a vegetable soup with just a little bit of crab on top). Still a great place to get some good seafood! read more

I hate to give out bad reviews, so you know it's serious when I call out an issue. I came with one other person on a Monday around noon, we were two of seven total guests in the restaurant, with three bartenders and two servers working. We sat at the bar and the bartender said hi then continually made brief eye contact while completely ignoring us for about five minutes until we finally asked him to order a drink. We got drinks and the bartender was friendly, but it was another ten minutes or so, after we finished our first round, when we had to ask him again if we could get another drink and order. We ended up ordering a dozen oysters - six blue points and six arrowheads - and waited another 45 minutes for the first half dozen to show up and about another 20 minutes for the second half dozen. During that entire time, the bartender didn't speak to us or offer us another drink. We wanted to get drunk at lunch on a Monday, we would have happily been upsold on drinks. That being said, the oysters were delicious but we spent way too much money to wait that long for what we ended up being served. It's a pandemic, the restaurant business is hurting, and I know there are a lot of new employees everywhere due to the job demand. I'd totally understand if it didn't take this long, the bartender acted like we existed, or it had been much busier than three women who were finishing their meal and another couple at the bar waiting for crab cake sandwiches. After talking to some neighbors, it sounds like Mama's has a reputation for terrible service. read more

We really enjoyed eating here! It gets pretty crowded so we put our name on the list then wen and got a drink across the street. The table opened up pretty quickly though and we were seated outside. There's a more lively side and a less lively side.. we happened to be on the less lively side which was unfortunate, but it is what it is. For food we got 2 dozen oysters (we actually ordered one but got 2 somehow and just accepted it and paid for it too at the end) which were all good! Not the best oysters I've ever had but definitely still good! We also got the salmon BLT and the burger which were both pretty large and tasty! I would definitely go back! read more

Went last night. Reservations for 6:30 arrived early and they seated us right away. Everyone we encountered was great and customer service oriented. The bar was a litlle slow but our server William made sure we were informed of what was going on. Drinks arrived and our orders were made and we relaxed taking in the old time neighborhood atmosphere. My wife had cream of crab soup, we asked for and got a cup not a bowl. It was delicious. Creamy and full of crab. I had blue point oysters, fresh and correctly shucked. For mains my wife had white wine mussels. They were prepared perfectly. I had the rockfish. A generous slab of fish over a bed of rice, topped with crab imperial and a rich beautiful sauce. It was done right and enough that I couldn't even think about dessert. First time here s d we were so pleased. We got tired of Nick's which is getting closer to preprepared food. We came for brunch, I was a little crippled by indecision since so many things sounded good. It was restaurant week so I ended up going with a two course lunch; spinach salad plus lobster Mac and cheese. I felt obligated to get seafood even though the croque madame also was singing its siren song at me. I also had a drink special, the "crushing on you" which was a strawberry crush. It had enough kick to make me a little tipsy but not sloshed. So it wasn't a super strong pour. The spinach salad was very good, as was the Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was extremely buttery/oily though and my tummy is not used to that much fat so I really should have only eaten a small amount; I felt uncomfortably full all day after a full serving. Honestly, although there were generously large chucks of lobster, they were a tad over cooked and really not necessary for the dish. More like an afterthought than integrated, if that makes sense. Service was good especially given our large party size. I would return. read more

Great time during the middle of the day on a rainy Tuesday. Very quiet and just a few customers. Lovely service and ambiance. Loved the bartender Dillon down stairs and the shuckster! Didn't catch his name but let me tell you.... During Covid I taught myself to shuck oysters. Needless to say some oysters are smaller but have a hell of a hinge. I've done all kinds from all over the states. BABY..it is a talent. But see here is where it gets interesting and what sets these oysters apart. The oysters here are meticulously clean. No mud or worms to wash off. Shucked? They do not have shards of shells in the raw oyster. No crunchy bits to maneuver when you drop the sweet briny oysters down your throat. The oysters also have very clean insides with the oysters juice amazing to drink. No mignotte sauce or horseradish necessary. Just clean and fresh. I'll be back for just these. Hh $1 oysters are delaware. My faves were shooting points and chinateaque. Meaty and full, sweet and briny Oysters $2.50 to 4.00. Total? #18 but Priceless to me Grilled oysters 6 for $18 Tried all 3 types, parm and herb, paprika butter and horseradish. Don't let me hold you. The horseradish HITS. I had 2 of each flavor first round and another 6 of straight horseradish the 2nd. Add the bread and just order the dozen. Cream of crab soup? Flavorful and full of crab meat. Not too thick but sticks to your bones. Mine was a bit grainy? I'd give it a 7.5/10. Drinks? Tried the spritzer which is just refreshing ND perfect for a hot day. Tried the blueberry martini. Strong and tasty like bonefish grill. read more

Hello Yelpers!!!! Happy New Year to you all. So the girls and I planned a night out and after reading the reviews on Mama's on the Half Shell we decided to pay the restaurant a visit during the Baltimore Restaurant Week. Boy oh boy were we all disappointed? You ask why? Sure I'll tell you why....We placed our order and I will share the pictures. First of all the service was good. The waiters and waitress were professional. We ordered Calamari for Appetizer. The Calamari was not on the restaurant week Menu. It was a 3 course for $55. Quite pricey right? Ok 2 of us ordered the Crab cake and it came with rice which was so tasteless and green beans which were not bad. My other friend ordered the Salmon and it came with Blackberry Jelly or so on top of it and it was too sweet and I would never pair jelly with Salmon. Then the Salmon came with baby potatoes and broccoli. So the reason they are getting 2 stars is because of taste and presentation. Restaurant owners please pay attention. Presentation is everything. People should get excited when they see their food. To be honest it looked like cafeteria food. We were all so disappointed! Please see the photos. Oh the extra 1 star is for the service it was good. However, I cannot justify giving this restaurant more than 3 stars and I'm so sorry but there will be no Mama on the half shell for me again. If Restaurant week is your way to show off your restaurant and gain new customers...you did not pass dear Mama on the half shell. read more

okay I came here looking for a delicious crab cake and I got one. The calamari is horrible and I mean horrible. Since they have a you ordered it you pay for it policy trust the reviews and save your money. I doubt they will help you at the time of your mistake. The calamari was not fresh at all, chewy and oily. Steamed shrimp was good, nothing special. I would not order it again but could share with a friend. My crab cake was really good. My fingers smelled fishy after washing them but I was pleased with the lump crab and the size of the burger. Fries....save your calories, they are very heavy here and I am not sure why. We have been eyeing this place for a while and tried to go a while back, but they were booked. We lucked up on a reservation and decided to visit on a Saturday night. It wasn't crowded at all which was nice. We sat upstairs. For drinks, we had a Mocktail and the cucumber lemonade crush. Both were good. Appetizers Crabcake Eggrolls - 8/10 Side Caesar salad - 1/10. No flavor at all. I have never had to put salt and pepper on my salad. And some of the lettuce tasted old. Mama's classic salad - 7/10 Dinner Rockfish with crab imperial, rice, pilaf, and green beans - 7/10. Good but minimal flavor Surf and turf with broccolini - 8/10. Steak was tender shrimp was good. There was another side that came with it but I don't remember what it was. For dessert, we had the bread pudding. Part of it was hot, some was room temperature, and the rest was somewhere in between. Not quite sure how that works with one piece of bread pudding. It wasn't bad but I couldn't really enjoy it because the temperature wasn't to my liking. I didn't send it back because I could tell it had been in the microwave because of the way the bread started to harden. No need to go through that again. But we did finish it. Overall, it was a decent experience. Seasoning was lacking and we had a few instances where our silverware was dirty. Glad we finally tried this place. Not sure if we will return. read more
