I recently returned to Dylan's for dinner this past week. I love the vibe here and wish I would stop by more often. We were able to grab seats at the bar after a brief wait. We were right in front of the oyster shucking area which was entertaining to watch. We ordered a dozen oysters, six of two different kinds. The oysters are priced by the half dozen here just FYI. I feel like Dylan's has some of the freshest oysters in Baltimore. I love that they're not all huge ginormous dinner plates but some are small and petite with a light brine. We also ordered the french onion dip, potato skins, caesar salad, and brussel sprouts. The french onion dip had great flavor and went well with the potato chips (I subbed extra chips in place of the crackers to make it gluten free). I only wish the dip was served warm. The brussels were absolutely delicious with great flavor and texture, and not swimming in the sauce like some other places. The stern fern martini is one of my faves but I can't drink more than one and once the other salty dishes started coming out, I needed something different so I opted for the yuzu cider. That was really refreshing and delicious! The basque cheesecake for dessert was good but not the best I've had. Service at the bar seemed a bit rushed but it may have been because the place was packed. It was a Tuesday night but at 6:30pm, every seat was full. By 8pm the place really cleared out so we'll time our visit a little later next time. The owner, Dylan, was working the floor alongside his staff and was nice enough to offer us some of his home-made hot sauce. It was really good! My only wish would be for the menu to be better marked for gluten free options. read more

This place seems like it's pretty popular considering when we arrived it was shortly after they had opened and they were able to squeeze us a table inside but we preferred to sit outside. I assume reservations are recommended for the weekend. Food was fairly priced and I highly enjoyed my burger and fries. It was juicy and flavorful! The burger had this sauce that really elevated it. The fries were crispy and salty. I added old bay to mine and it was delicious. I don't eat oysters, but my partner indulged and reported it was super tasty with some hot sauce on it. They also did have a wide range of oysters all between 18 to I believe maybe 25 for 1/2 a dozen. Will definitely return for the burger. read more

My friends and I decided to bar hop through Hampden and Dylan's was the 4th stop. They were super busy, but they still luckily had space at the bar for our pretty sizeable group. We had a few cocktails and some oysters. While I am not a fan of oysters, I do appreciate the shuckers giving us a tutorial on how to shuck. The bar staff was super friendly and festive. Luckily we made a reservation, because it was a busy Friday night at Dylan's Oyster Cellar. The vibe was great, and it instantly felt like the perfect choice for a friend and me since we love oysters. It turned out to be exactly what we were hoping for. We ordered a dozen, split between two varieties: * Middleneck, VA - small, meaty, salty, crisp, with notes of iron and umami * Valiant, VA - small, ocean salt, crisp, with hints of sea lettuce from Metompkin Bay For drinks, she ordered a cosmo while I went with a turmeric tonic from their zero alcohol menu. Just okay, a little disappointed. A lot about this restaurant screamed cheap and penny pinching. For an oyster bar, I would've thought they would've let you mix and match oysters, but you can only order one kind by the half dozen... I've been to non-oyster bars that let you mix and match. Why wouldn't you offer this...? What a missed opportunity. We got the roasted oysters and a half dozen raw oysters to start. The roasted come with five oysters. Really? You couldn't spare a sixth...? That said, they were tasty! For dinner we got the fish sandwiches. The fish itself was amazing, incredibly fried w/ great batter and nice toppings. But served with... bag chips??! Come on guys... that's not a nice way to serve dinner. You need hot fries or fresh homemade chips. Bag chips are so cheap and really take away from a nice dinner. The cocktail menu was great and we all loved our drinks. Service was quick and our plates were cleared between servings. Finally, our table was extremely wobbly... you couldn't lean on it at all, my friend's cocktail spilled completely after leaning on the table. Nothing was offered to us and seemingly the staff didn't notice? We needed tons of napkins and our table was soaked but sure. Overall, while some of the food was good, the experience was pretty poor. Yes! I've been twice. Tried the same dishes twice because after my first visit I had to come back and try the exact same thing. I'll go back and try others. But on both visits I tried: The Coddie (cod fish cake with saltine and mustard sauce). Tasty but salty. I thought on my first visit it was too salty so I wanted to try it again. Second visit, too salty. Roasted oysters - 10 stars Kale salad - 10 stars. That maple miso dressing is something special Whole Sea Bream - 10 stars (similar to snapper I think). Love the ginger carrot puree. I started making some at home to accompany my dishes after my second visit. It's so good! Ham hock collard greens - 10 stars, too good. Came here on a Friday night - was able to make a somewhat last minute reservation and sat outside because it was a beautiful night. Very nice ambience in Hampden! Food was very very good. We got the roasted oysters - could have just had them all night, so good. The local salad (which I forgot to snap a photo of) was very good, albeit on the small side, especially for 2 to share. Both fish dishes we had - arctic char and rainbow trout - were delicious. Trout's so simple with browned butter, but what's better than browned butter? shishitos were in a very nice sauce. For an oyster cellar with booze, the food is surprising good. Both the kale and Caesar salad were luscious, and the trout and whole flounder well prepared. Desserts were good as well. The problem is the service. We live just a couple blocks away. Years and years ago we came, and our server just plopped our food on the table and kept going. A couple years later we tried again, and the whole fish I ordered was so overcooked as to be unrecognizable. So we let another couple of years pass and tried again, mostly because I really enjoy whole fish. But again, the service. Reusing your appetizer utensils is, I suppose, okay in a diner for breakfast. But in a real restaurant? No. Just no. We were seated next to the servers' station, and one time our server came by, and I know she saw our finished plates, but she decided to chat with her colleague for several minutes before turning around and picking them up. The servers generally just seemed indifferent to their guests. So I don't know. The restaurant and bar were busy, so I suppose that's all management cares about. The service is not going to improve because management doesn't care enough to train them. And no coffee. Really? None. How can that happen? read more

What a fantastic place. The music is loud (not overwhelming loud though), low lit and the restaurant is crowded with folks at the tables and bar area. I was greeted by the friendly host upon walking in and saw my friend seated in the far corner and went over. We started off with cocktails - loved my Surfer Rosa. We got a dozen oysters that came at half a dozen each (Katama Bay and Sunken Meadow). We were also given 2 different extra ones (yay). The oysters were delicious and we ate them all! For my entree, I got the Butterflied Rainbow Trout while my friend got their Whole Black Sea Bass. I loved my trout. The skin was nice and crunchy and the meat was soft with a slight kick to it. I was in Baltimore for my Birthday (this was the night before) and had heard about Dylan's for years. It's a small corner place on The Avenue in Hampden. I and my Mother both ordered the butterflied Rainbow Trout as our entree, it was moist and delicious, quite lovely. Other items ordered were raw Oysters, which were delicious, the Coddie, by me, which was tasty, stewed "Dragon Tongue" beans, as my side, which were yummy, the Potato Salad, which included corn, as my Mother's side dish, and the Basque Cheesecake for dessert. I have got to stop sleeping on places with Oyster in the name. In my defense I dont like Oysters at all so I take it as a sign that establishments with the name of the food I dont like isnt for me. What a cute spot! Came with some friends on a chilly evening. I've wanted to come here for a while and never made it to the original location. They told us that we did have to wait for a table, but there are plenty of other cute restaurants and things to see in the area, so we took a quick, but brisk stroll around. It was worth the wait though. The interior feels like chic dive bar... as in there is a hodge podge of furniture from booths to what felt like a school chair at the table where I was sitting. I think that my favorite dish was the roasted oysters! We got regular oysters too, but there is something magical about roasting them! A surprise hit was the burger... Checking another spot off my century old bookmarked list. After contemplating for a min on where to go for dinner, we finally settled, I mean compromised. I had forgotten that I wanted to come here and I'm glad someone mentioned it. It's a small space on the corner of the street. I loved the restaurant vibe. Right when we walked in, their ornaments on the tree were made from the oyster shells which were creative and cute. We didn't have reservations but they were able to seat us at the bar. I didn't opt for any oysters although I wished we did since it is an oyster house. We didn't really know what to get and we ended up ordering the same exact dishes as our bar neighbor. We started with the coddie app so a spreadable fried fish ball on saltines with mustard. For the mains, we got Mac and cheese and red beans and rice. At least we got one seafood item from a seafood place. All dishes were cleared, fyi. It doesn't look like an extensive menu so it's good to know they're focusing on quality over quantity. I attended an event at St. Luke's church across from this restaurant. My sis & I decided that after the event we were going to take a stroll and then find a place to eat. We circled the block and even w/ all of the available options, we ended up at Dylan's Oyster Cellar and I am so happy that we did! The lighting was dim the chatter was kept to a minimum, but you could tell that people were enjoying themselves cause you could hear laughter in the background. We were sat at a cozy booth, where we reviewed the menu and were provided glasses of water. Shortly after, our gentleman waiter greeted us. He answered a few questions and we decided on one of the house tap beers, one of the zero alcohol beverages, two orders of the oysters and the Coddie, with a side of french fries. Everything was delicious and came out plated nicely. The Coddie is served as 1 codfish cake but it is tennis ball size. I'm not a big codfish person but that cake was delicious! And the mustard sauce & crackers provided were a great compliment to the dish! Despite the portion of 1 we were still able to share and it was so delicious that we wanted to order another but unfortunately couldn't because we arrived near closing time. The oysters that were recommended to us were fresh, succulent, and flavorful, and did exactly what we needed them to do. The fries, (which I suspect might be Boardwalk fries... YUM!), were fried perfectly, and went well with the cold ketchup on the side. Free street parking available as well as paid parking which appears to be about $.50 an hour with a 4 hour max. We were also given a complimentary postcard for the business with the delivery of our check. The staff were friendly and accommodating. My new favorite oyster bar in Baltimore!!!! Omg. I'm in town for a conference and I really wanted oysters so I took to yelp and found Dylan's! The reviews were great and so I thought I'd venture out. The Hamden neighborhood is hip and upon arrival I felt very at home. I had Raw Oysters, the Anchovie Toast, and the Potato Leek Soup which were all amazing!!! Henry, my bartender, was extremely knowledgeable about all types of oysters and their histories. The owner, Dylan, came out to greet everyone. I didn't know he was the owner until someone said his name. He even brought me a surprise of two different oysters to try a west coast and one from Massachusetts! We live less than 500 feet from Dylan's Oyster Cellar, so I couldn't be more glad that we LOVE it. Even if we didn't live a one-minute walk from their front door, I would love it (but I love it just a little extra because we do). I've been to Dylan's at least four or five times now, and I've always had a great time, great food, and great drinks - every single time. Dylan's is so consistently wonderful. First, the food. I love that Dylan's menu is constantly changing - with the seasons, seasonal product, seasonally available seafood, etc. - because I've been able to try such a range of dishes. I've had a variety of starters: roasted oysters, coddie (cod cake), fish pate with house-made potato chips and crostini, house-cured sardine on buttered baguette... I've had salads: beets and ricotta, a simple green salad, a Caesar salad... I've had several main courses they've offered: fish and chips; scarlet runner beans; monkfish with sunchokes and arugula; monkfish tail with butter, capers, and green salad; whole black sea bass with an herb/espelette chimichurri; mackerel over curry rice with an herb salad... And - of course - I've had oysters! They usually have 5-8 varieties to choose from, and they offer them by the half dozen. And dessert - that Basque cheesecake!!! I've never had a bad bite of food at Dylan's. More often than not, I've had one or more dishes where I thought: "oh wow!" or "how did they do that?" or "I'm never cooking seafood at home again since Dylan's is just down the street and they can do it 1000x better than I ever will!" And then I've also had my fair share of drinks: wine, cocktails, beers. Dylan's has it all, and good options for each. The service is excellent. The owners - Dylan and Irene Salmon - are in the restaurant all the time. You can tell the restaurant is a labor of love, and it couldn't be more local! And the restaurant just feels homey and comfortable. It feels like a great European bistro or a neighborhood pub. I always feel at home when I eat at Dylan's. My only slight, tiny, insignificant qualm with Dylan's? They only take reservations over the phone, so you have to call when they're open to make a reservation (and they're only open for dinner five nights a week). It's a little more difficult to make a reservation here because they don't use any online system for reservations. And I do recommend reservations if you're trying to eat at Dylan's on a weekend night at a busy hour. We can almost always get in without a reservation since we eat a little early (we'll sometimes go around 5:30 just so we can get a table), but better safe than sorry if you're looking forward to a meal at Dylan's! So - to summarize - I LOVE DYLAN'S. Great, fresh seafood and oysters. A creative menu that is always changing. Great drinks. Great service. And you feel like you're at home. Couldn't be happier to be able to walk down the street and have dinner at Dylan's anytime we want. They might see us once a week. I'm serious. read more

Fairly small establishment with tables, countertops, and booth seating. We were seated in a booth which afforded us some privacy. Service was great, our server was helpful and knowledgeable about the wine and oysters. The menu is fairly small and all entrees (plates) are ala carte. To start things off, our table went with a flight of 18 oysters of varying flavors. Since I'm not an oyster fan, I watched the others down them all in a matter of minutes. Needless to say they were delighted. Dinner was the whole bronzini, butterflied trout in butter, green chile cheeseburger, and a fried oyster sandwich. Their oyster menu changes frequently and it's impossible to not find a delicious morsel of shellfish on there. Get at least a half dozen. I mean, you're at a spot called Dylan's Oyster Cellar! The drink list is fun and the food here goes well with a local brew. Dishes of note: 1) Coddie Bites - saltines, mustard sauce, parsley 2) Green Chili Cheeseburger - jalapeño, top-secret sauce, iceberg, red onion 3) Blue Catfish - tartar, pepper relish, pickles, iceberg I wouldn't mind coming back especially since it's right across the street from the Charmery ice cream spot.
