Came here a couple times, but I gotta say Mamas is amazing!! Everytime I've come, the food has always been on point (well most of the food.) Last time I came was for a friends birthday and ordered all of the appetizers (almost all) and raw oysters. I didn't try any of the raw oysters, but my boyfriend and friends enjoyed all of the ones they ordered. For starters I do suggest getting the seafood chowder!! It's basically crab chowder soup but with shrimp and scallop and corn!!! We got the crab cake appetizer, the crab & artichoke dip, oysters Rockefeller, pan seared scallops, tuna tartare, fried calamari, coddies, clams casino, parmsean grilled oysters, steamed old bay seasoned mussles, steamed Cajun butter mussels, & steamed shrimp. The crab cake was delicious, I usually don't like crab cakes, but this is the only place I'm okay eating it at. The coddies were my least favorite. Just fish cakes with crackers and mustard. I wasn't much of a fan. I did love eating the Cajun butter mussels. I couldn't stop eating them! The old bay mussels was good too, but too much old bay for me. Came here for a couple drinks in the beautiful weather. I loved that they had so many varieties of crushes and that I was able to substitute the vodka for rum. However, I'm giving this place 3 stars for their service. When my friend and I walked in, we felt like they were too busy to attend to us. Yes, they were a bit busy but there needs to be a better system here with a clear hostess stand that is accessible to customers. We were in town for work and we wanted an authentic Baltimore crab and oysters experience ! The ambiance is amazing & my food was so incredible! The crab although we came when crab wasn't in season was amazing . We were warned to stay away from the tourist traps like Phillips and get great food here and at Thames oyster house . We tried both and Mamas was my favorite ! My crab platter was 28 dollars but amazing and worth a one night splurge , my table got filet mignon, crab cake and bouillabaisse(28$) , the desserts however not too impressive at all, I love bread pudding and got the Shute chocolate bread pudding and it was a let down :/ so was the cookie dough pie , but since the food was out of this world that fixed everything! read more

There have some of the best mussels in town. This is one of my favorite happy hour spots to play. The mussels are $7.50 from 4-7pm. The shrimp are $16 for a pound. The Baracardi Mojitos are $5. Oysters go for a $1 each. There are plenty of other deals those are a few of my favorites. The service is great no long waits. Constantly checking to make sure you're good & enjoying your visit. They may be slipping.....but this restaurant isn't bad! It has a great reputation. The atmosphere is fun. For a drink I got the orange crush, it's very sweet and tasted like orange Fanta. I prefer drinks with less sugar and I wouldn't get it again. For appetizers my table got the crab dip and the fried calamari. They were both OK. For dinner I got the seafood chowder, which didn't taste fresh and was VERY SALTY. I would not get this item again. I could not finish it. I also got the half pound of steamed shrimp- it was great. Every time I come I get a different experience which really depends on the time and the day I go. I never sit outside Bc it's either too hot or too cold for me but today I sat outside and the humidity was at a all time high and they did not have the mist on. The food is always normal the drinks is always normal there's really nothing that I don't like about that place and there is really nothing that I love about it either. Our server was delightful I can't remember her name but she had brown hair. My spinach was awesome now how could I forget that. This is based on the bar. Came in for HH and was sitting in the bar area for awhile before we had to flag down the cocktail server. She came over and said that we were talking and didn't want to disturb us. I asked what the HH specials were and she didn't mention the mussels, so I asked her about it and she said "Oh yeah, that's on HH." So, what else was on special that she failed to mention? It actually would of been okay if she didn't tell us about the mussels because although there were a lot, there was hardly any marinara sauce. Basically, dry mussels with a few diced tomatoes and hard bread. There were also shell bits which were unpleasant to get. (Maybe our server was trying to save us!) We got a dozen oysters and the first few I had, had grit and shell all up in them. I was scared to eat any more so I left them for awhile. Our server came over to pick up our oysters platter that still had oysters more than a few times. She also asked us if we wanted more to drink/food more times than was necessary. My fiancé was still picking shells out of his mouth as we were walking down the street. I did like the Bloody Marry with Kettle One that I got. It came with a couple of big green olives and pickled green beans with their house-made bloody mix. We debated whether to order more food but from our experience so far, we decided to go somewhere else instead. I had the Bouillabaisse. It was so salty I couldn't really eat a lot of it. This is a concern as sometimes over salted seafood may be a cover up for food that's on its way to expiring. It came with a piece of toasted cheesy bread which I also thought was inedible. I also had the seafood skins which were good. This location came highly recommend by a local who eats here very often. The interior is richly decorated, giving one the feel and wonder of what the building used to be used for. Portraits, brass, oversized chairs, dark, warm masculine colors. The seating choices are outside, the main and lower floors and upstairs. We were seated upstairs in comfortable tables that were a tad close to each other- no private conversation here- all can be heard. We arrived just before the lunch specials ended, and our server was able to still offer items from that menu. Our part of four ordered calamari, salad, fish with shrimp over rice and a burger. The overall feel was- overcooked and too salty. Even our local companion stated that the quality was not as it usually is. The calamari was fried just a bit too long. The fish was too salty- cooked too long. Shrimp was pretty good. The rice was plentiful and buttery (which may be a deterrent to some). The burger was a bit dry as per my companion. The salad was good. We are not sure if it was because we ordered the food too close to end of the lunch time, just overheated oil, but we were disappointed . 4 stars After a full day of #movieslunchshoppingandsupportingafriendsartisticendeavors (in that order), I found myself in Baltimore, leaving an art gallery, that took over an hour to get to from Bethesda. The issue here is that we only spent a mere 20 minutes at the event - truth be told, they were packing up when we arrived. My thoughts while leaving the gallery? We better be doing something else after this! My time and gas money are precious, honey! My friend agreed to feed me...the least to be done after I was talked into going and almost ran over a rat as large as a mid-sized cat trying to make it on time. I searched the area and found Mama's On A Half Shell nearby. We walked in to a line of people waiting to be seated. The atmosphere was rustic and smaller than I anticipated, with a full bar and tables on the lower level and seating for larger groups and the kitchen on the upper level. Because there was only two of us, we were seated almost immediately upstairs near the kitchen. The menu was fully stocked with fresh catches (cooked to order), specials (e.g. salmon topped with lump crab and shrimp), regulars (e.g. fish and chips), raw bar and drinks. The chef's specials caught my eye almost immediately. The items seemed a bit pricey, but after I saw waiters walking giant plants of food to tables, I was sure it would be worth it. We ordered the oysters wrapped in bacon and the appetizer crab cake. For dinner, we both ordered the grilled salmon with jumbo lump crab and shrimp in a cream sauce and a side of Mama's mac and cheese. The salmon (chef special): Well, if you've encountered this beauty, you know that (1) the fish is fresh and tender, (2) it is seasoned to perfection with cajun spices and (3) it is large enough to feed two people. Bite after bite, the dish hit my palate with flavor upon flavor: a little smoke from the salmon, mild sweetness from the crab and baby shrimp, and the sauce was a full body, rich cream that tamed the spice from the salmon and the chorizo rice...a little spicy with chunks of chorizo mixed in perfectly cooked and seasoned rice. I was definitely impressed. Oysters wrapped Bacon: You know, the oyster is one of my favorite shellfish. Not only because I was denied them as a child (my granny used to tell me they would make me fast...meaning they were an aphrodisiac. I have yet to feel the effects), but because I love the taste of them - their creamy texture, mild hints of buttery richness, and a little salty. I was overwhelming disappointed when my oysters were brought to my table drenched in a Worcestershire mixture that muted the delicacy of the oyster. Worcestershire sauce needs to be used sparingly. They were too salty and too tangy to enjoy. Crab Cake: Honestly, it was the best I ever had (all of a sudden that stupid Drake song popped in my head smh). It was sooooo good. Limited fillers and full of jumbo lumped cram meat, what all my dreams were made of. I hardly noticed there was tarter sauce sharing the same space on the plate. Mama's Mac and Cheese: It was much better than I anticipated. Baked cheesy large elbows with a breaded crust. I'm not really into breadcrumbs on mac and cheese, but it was pretty darn good. It was lightly salted, which I appreciate. So many restaurants neglect this necessary step. Our waitress was friendly enough, but rarely came back to check on us. This could be due to me taking a while to figure out what I wanted, but after I ordered, we had to find someone to refresh our drinks, twice. Hence, -1 star. It was a Bye Week for the Redskins so the boy dragged his cute little tush away from the telly for a Sunday date with me in Baltimore. We had a meeting to attend to first but afterwards it was game on! We did a quick search for what was good in the neighborhood and Mama's on the Half Shell was one of the first restaurants to pop up. Remembering their awesome macaroni and cheese from Elsa M's Yelper Party a few years back I made the executive decision to come back for the full experience based on their high reviews and promise for the best crab cake in town. Spoiler Alert: I was not disappointed. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the sweetest and most intuitive hostess in the world. At first she tried to seat us near a television because she naturally assumed we were there to watch a Ravens game but when she realized that we were there for a date she found a quiet little corner for us to sit in. We grabbed a few beers and decided to split a dozen oysters and a single crab cake with french fries and their famous mac n' cheese. The oysters were one of the best I had. Super fresh, sweet, big and juicy. They were just perfect. The crab cake that came out was pretty much 100% jumbo lump crab meat. Similar to ROB at Union Market, only this had a great sear on the outside that helped hold all the meat together and add a little bit extra flavor. I totally dug it. The mac and cheese was great as well, cheesy with a bread crumb crust. A little bit oily at the bottom, but who ever expected macaroni to be healthy? Not I! We were looking for a seafood spot for brunch and came here on a whim. I guess a lot of people had the same idea so the wait was about 25 minutes, so make a reservation if you can. We were seated downstairs at a high top table near the bar. Unfortunately, It was a bit loud and right in the middle of the bustling waiters. Next time I think I'll indicate that I want to sit outside or perhaps upstairs. We started off with a dozen oysters, 6 Blue Points and 6 something else I can't remember. Both types were plump and tasted very fresh. Next, we ordered clams in a white wine garlic sauce and these were very flavorful. I wanted to lick that sauce off of the bottom of the bowl! Even though Mama's is a seafood restaurant, nothing really seafood-y stuck out to me on the brunch menu. Instead I opted for items off of the regular lunch menu. I wasn't that hungry so I started off with the seafood chowder. Wow! This bowl was packed with tons of yummy pieces of scallops, shrimp, potatoes and corn. I honestly was full after eating this, but I also had an order of the seared scallops appetizer on the way. It was a hash brown, creamed spinach topped with three perfectly cooked scallops. The hash brown was a bit burnt so I eventually gave up on eating that, but otherwise it was very tasty. I came with some picky eaters and everyone was very pleased with all of the food. I loved the food here! It was a bit of a wait but well worth it :) While waiting, I couldn't help but look at all the dishes people were ordering and everything looked HUGE and delicous. Get excited!! The venue is very casual and bar-like. Very comfortable but also very loud. Downstairs there is a bar and TV. The middle and top floor were all for dining. Now to the food! There were four of us and so I got to try everyone's dish and everything was great. We ordered two orders of the seafood chowder and split it between four people. They gave it to us in individual cups that made it the perfect size for an appetizer. It was so hearty, creamy, and FILLED with seafood. I loved it!! The salmon cakes (think crab cakes) was a nice change and tasted really good also. The scallops dish was also good but a bit too salty. I was so surprised to find they gave six whole large seared scallops. The mac 'n cheese was sooo creamy. I ordered the "Pasta of the Day", which had shrimp, mushrooms, cheese, sundried tomatoes, and fish in a basil pesto cream sauce. Needless to say, it was delish!!! It was a dark and stormy night, the rain fell down heavily and I felt like I was in New England with this stormy weather being in this pub that was crowded and had an old school feel to it. It's been rough coming back to Chicago after living in college in Baltimore since the seafood's never as good unless you want to chop off your own arm to get some. We were seated on the second floor and Mama's on the Half Shell was crowded to the brim. It was noisy, it was lively and it was exactly what I was looking for. I didn't bother with any beer because I had enough Yuengling from the wedding the night before and was very hungover. We ordered some fried oysters which were terrifically delicious served with a garlic aioli. The oyster was tender and the breading made me want to bread everything in the restaurant and start eating like Homer Simpson. Since I was hungry and missed seafood very much, I wanted lobster, crab cake, jumbo shrimp, and every expensive thing on the menu! Since spending $100 wasn't really what I had in mind, I went for one of their combination plates which featured more fried oyster, fried cod, fried shrimp, fried scallop, and at last (drum roll, please): CRAB CAKE!!! The food took a long time to get to the table and I was fooled several times by false alarms seeing plates of food rolling off to other tables while I had puppy dog eyes waiting for my food! Finally. It. Was. HERE! Fried oysters repeated their glory in now entree form and I got to work munching on the tender oyster with crisp outside breading. I ripped into the scallop and expected blandness but couldn't get my fork and knife to let go of it! The scallop pwned! I ate and ate and was happy to be back in Baltimore when finally I carved into my majestic crab cake! Ode to Joy! They should have cued in Beethoven's masterpiece right then and there because the world disappeared and was replaced by clouds and blue sky and angels floating around shooting stuff at people. This restaurant has been around since '03, and the place seems to be a local favorite for seafood. When we walked in, the hostess asked if we wanted to sit down- or upstairs; the downstairs was the bar with a few tables, and the upstairs was more of a 'dining area.' We chose the latter. The menu offers items such as appetizers (French onion soup, sesame tuna salad, beef pot pie, antipasto platter, etc.), entrees (steak, rockfish, chicken Chesapeake, etc.), fresh oysters, fresh catch of the day (salmon, tuna, tilapia, grouper, halibut, and rockfish), and desserts. I tried their Crab and Artichoke Dip (lump crab, gouda, boursin, cheddar, cream cheese, and swiss cheese, served in a bread bowl with some crackers; this was just okay - it wasn't as cheesy as I thought it would be; I appreciated the chunks of crab meat throughout, but I feel as if there should have been a better selection of crackers - I think the wheat crackers tasted the best with the dip); PBR Fried Shrimp (beer-battered shrimp that came with a side of chipotle orange dip; this was the least favorite as the shrimp did not taste fresh, and the batter itself was just not that crunchy or crispy; also, we thought the chipotle orange dip was kind of off and did not complement well with the shrimp; in addition, there were only 4 pieces, so we thought that was a little pitiful :P; and, a side of mac n' cheese (this was topped with bread crumbs but seemed as if it was an afterthought as it was just a mound that was sitting on top of the pasta (I just scooped that off); however, the mac and cheese itself was delicious! Hit up this spot on my way back to NYC from DC and was blown away! Boiled shrimp - tender, tasty, fresh and well seasoned. Not deveined, but we didn't care. Cheesy crab and artichoke dip - SO GOOD, but best while it's hot. Would get it as an app again and share so everyone can enjoy while it's still melty and amazing. Celery and carrots to dip were a nice fresh method of delivery. Clams on the half shell - delicious, but sooo tiny. Would probably ask about the size before ordering again. Their menu is huge and you'll have to take a good long look before you decide on what to get. Or you can just order at random and that'll likely have you satisfied anyway. I think it's safe to say that the entire appetizers portion of the menu is great (Though I have yet to try their famous hot wings. Why get wings when you're at a seafood restaurant?) Mama is a liar. The $14 Crabcake Sandwich isn't made with crabcakes. It's heaps and heaps of delicious, real crab meat with very little breading or batter. It's like eating a whole crab without dealing with those pesky shells. Throw the meat into a toasted, possibly buttered bun with housemade tartar sauce, and it's merely the BEST CRAB SANDWICH EVER, despite the deceptive name. Add in the side of thin fries that are very crispy and never get soggy. Order a refreshing, very orange $5 Mimosa (or two before 2PM Sunday). Enjoy your Sunday brunch. I've been to Mama's a few times but have to give it one star due to the service we received last weekend. We just completed a 5K and wanted a a drink and some food. We get there and the bartender says the hostess will be right with you. We waited about 15 minutes and out comes "sunshine". The hostess had an attitude from the beginning. I asked if we could sit outside since it was a nice day. There were three in our party so I suggest we can combine tables. She says no. Doesn't give any further explanation or ask if we would like to wait for another table. We ended up leaving to go to Tavern on the Square because she was so rude. DC Day trip. My group was grumpy of all the walking. They did not want to stay longer for dinner but wanted highway food. Somehow I convince them to make a pit stop in Baltimore. Mama's is not a place that I would go every weekend. It is a little on the pricey side for me, but the food is always amazing. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday. We ordered two-dozen raw oysters and they were delicious. I just did not like reading that they were "large" when I consider them on the medium side. They were also a bit pricey. For dinner I ordered the soft shell crab special. I don't know what they were battered with,but they were awesome. The crab came with fried green tomatoes and rice pilaf that was addicting. My boyfriend ordered the fried oyster platter and was very happy with the sizes and breading for his meal. We each had several drinks that were good too. Our biggest issue was the service. It seemed as if there was one waiter for the entire bar area and outside. We waited a long time for everything except the actual food. I don't know if something happened or not, but one waiter for that amount of people is not fair to them or the patrons of true restaurant. I have to dock by one star for the service. And the prices are reasonable for what you get. Everyone loved everything. I personally wasn't a fan of the seafood melt, way too creamy for me. I couldn't handle it. But everyone loved it. I liked the crab dip, bacon wrapped scallops and the wings best. We were surprised to see that for all that food, our bill was less than $100. We had leftovers for days, and everything hit the spot. The bbq shrimp was good, but after trying my friend's fried risotto I wanted more! The crab cake was amazinggg, flavorful, and surprisingly filling ~~~ The pasta was equally amazing (definitely a very generous portion size). I wanted to like this place so much!!!! Sadly, not great! We arrived and were told there was no space outside (which was fine with Us) but it definitely was, they were just waiting for bigger parties I guess? they took Us upstairs. Right outside their kitchen... all the time we were sitting there We were trying to ignore the screaming, plate throwing and people coming and going. We ordered a couple of drinks to start, fresh oysters and beignets. After a few minutes they brought the beignets (so good). Then after another 10'min. The drinks. The brunch plates arrived and there were NO oysters on our table, we obviously wanted the oysters to be there before the brunch.. anyways, no problem, We started eating and I found a hair on my plate, very small one and tried to ignore, bc well, it happens! Found a second longer hair.... Then a third!! That was when I called someone and told them about it. They were super nice about it and offered to get me another plate, which I declined. They didn't charge me for it but our experience at this point was already unpleasant, So We decided to get the check and leave. I know it is difficult times, people are busy and restaurants need some time to be better after covid. One of the few places where shitty service is out shadowed by the delicious food. I came for crab cakes and mama's did not disappoint. 6 oz fatty delicious crabby cake sandwiched in between a delightful bun and neighbor to two massive pieces of ripe juicy tomato. Also, my favorite white wine [oyster bay] on the menu. The only complaint is the crappy service. We came in around 2 or 3, the place wasn't full, mostly just first floor and bar, but everything was super slow. I was in a great mood so it didn't bother me, and I commented that it looked like our server was the only one in the whole place...to which my friends replied that she was constantly chatting up guests at other tables and just hanging out, while our food and drinks sat on the counter. This place have top my expectations...me and my boyfriend found this place by chance. We were just looking to change or normal "go to" for good crab cakes and it just came up on my search. The first time we went we were amazed by how good the food was. Today we went back without reservation, just crossing our fingers that we had a chance to get in to celebrate Mother's Day with his parents. And it was amazing again!!! We had 1/2 dozen oysters and everyone got crab cake sandwiches, but me...I had it in a platter. Best Crab Cakes you will get in the area. read more

Cozy pubby brunch spot with a graham crusted brioche french toast that's as good as it sounds, a killer mac n' cheese, and solid bloody mary (topped off with pickled string beans, a nice touch). Service was prompt and attentive. Gets crowded, especially on Ravens game days- so be sure to come early. Seafood menu looks incredible- will definitely need to check that out next time. read more

My good friend told me about this place and he knew that I would instantly fall in love with both the taste and feel of this establishment. We got there around 12pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately near the bar. The bar and first floor dining was very cozy and welcoming. Of course I had to have a Mama's Bloody Mary which was one of the better Bloody Mary's I have had. We sampled the Blue Point Oysters which were clean, smooth and fresh! We also ordered the Oyster Rockefeller made with spinach pernod parmesan cheese. They were good but not the best I have had. The Pan Seared Scallops (Diver Scallops = huge rested on cream spinach over a potatoe cake was incredible. The beer steamed mussels were hmmmm yes, amazing! I also opted to try the Oyster Shooter chilled with vodka, cocktail sauce and oyster. If you want something refreshing, the Orange Crush is made from fresh oranges and served with crush ice! This drink is truly a brunch must! The french onion soup was killer version that stacked up with the best that I have had... This place is fun, lively, busy and best of all delicious!
