Top Places to Eat in 2022
Will D.

Possibly one of the easiest 5 star ratings I've ever given out, Mama Chow's has delicious food. The inside is nice, and service is great. But the food, man, the food. We ordered the KFC bao buns - very tasty right off the bat. Then we got an order of the KLM, a spicy miso ramen and the pho king. All were excellent. The KLM noodles were sweet and the pork tender and delicious. The spicy miso ramen was excellent - perfectly spicy while still delivering flavor. And the short rib in the pho king was excellent. Can't believe I haven't been here before and now I can't wait to come back.

A lot of times, take out cannot compare to the quality of the food when it is served hot and straight from the kitchen. This must have been the case with Mama Chow. We ordered several dishes but most of them were dry by the time they got back to the house. Based on other people's happy reviews, this must not be representative of what the restaurant normally produces. The place was crowded when we arrived to pick up our order so I guess it is not surprising that it was still not ready even after waiting. Our favorites were the bao buns (we ordered the KFC chicken and the pork belly). The portions were generous and, even though, as stated, they were dry, we especially liked the pickled veggies that came with the pork belly version. The crispy roll was crispy but again, not that hot, understandably, and needed a lot of sauce. The hot oil dumplings , KLM and grilled pork with sticky rice were fine. The mala beef seemed to be floating in oil. All in all, we were disappointed but we may try Mama Chow again, this time dining in and hoping for better results.

Absolutely incredible food, service, and the ambience is nice as well. The food and service were the star of the show. The KFC buns and mushroom dumplings were delicious and perfect. My Pho King was delicious and memorable. Portions are super generous and prices are reasonable. Look greatly forward to my next visit! Light years better than Mecha! Love to support small family run businesses

Hot Chili Oil Dumplings

AMAZING!! The hot chili oil dumplings were so juicy and delicious. The grilled beef pho was sensational, and the KLM was just as good. The service was great--everyone was super nice and really cared about what you needed. The ambiance was perfect with the twinkly lights and chill music. The bathrooms were very clean and the soap smelled great.

Absolutely unbelievably amazing that it is pretty ridiculous that I can rate a place this goooood. Zillion stars. Food was just one reason. The simple menu is way off the charts in quality and taste- tried almost everything since we had a large group Family-run business with a sophisticated and brilliant knack for good food and the dishes come out blazing hot. That is fresh - no wait time. That is superb timing and execution. This is almost the calibre of a Michellin restaurant. This review will not do it justice. They take no reservations and the workers were nonstop working. The kitchen did not have a break all night - tables were just turning over. Goodness!! This is the major reason why the location is receiving a bajillion stars from me. Everyone raved about the good food. For me the showstopper was the pandan panna cotta - oh my louise! The tip for us was 30% - so so so well deserved, and we decided at the end to add additional, end of night. Service is undeniably above and beyond - they poured water nonstop and was able to keep asking the customers to check up on them. These steps in caring wholeheartedly for customers may not be even taught at the finest hospitality training school. The authentic touch with their customer service comes with genuine character and that was really felt throughout- partially as a family-run operation but the staff/owners also carried the night with cordial ambiance. They took their time with the tables to offer recommendations and showed no signs of frustration. (very hard at times when a restaurant is sooo busy!) Kudos to small businesses. Good luck! Please support the local gems like this one!!

Mushroom Dumpling

I visited Mama Chow (No. 8) as part of my tour of CT Yelp's Top 25 Places to Eat. Mama Chow is a cozy, modern and casual Asian Fusion spot serving ramen, other soups, small plates, noodle dishes, etc. Service was very friendly. I was impressed with the two dishes I tried. The mushroom dumplings in creamy miso sauce were savory and delicious. They were topped with greens for contrasting color, texture and flavor. I recommend this dish. I also ordered the CKT (aka Char Kway Teow). It was more or less a stir fry of things such as sweet Chinese sausage, fish cakes, bean sprouts, egg, choy sum (a leafy vegetable that reminded a bit of mustard greens) and short and wide noodles, served in a savory glaze. The dish, which came out steaming hot, was delicious and such fantastic comfort food. If I lived in the area, I would order it regularly after sampling the rest of the menu. Definitely check out Mama Chow. Five Stars

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Mama Chow. The most unique Asian restaurant I've found in the CT area. This is a restaurant you can always count on for a delicious meal. They are kind, welcoming, and consistently dishing out wonderful food. This spot will quickly become a favorite. Their delicious broths are especially comforting on a cold winter day. Next time you're in the area and in the mood to try something different, try them out. You won't be disappointed!

Good Lawt!! Small and cozy palace with BIG flavors made with love. The owners were there and were So incredibly welcoming and sweet. Best Vietnamese coffee. The Laksa was out of this world. I'd drink a tub of the broth if I could. Pho was on point and last but not least the spicy garlic cucumbers.. so simple.. so perfect. Great pallet cleanser. New go to !

Mama Chow is one of our most favorite places to go eat in the area. I absolutely love the kind people that work there, the service is top notch. The place itself is small, and right off the main road, so easy to get to. But the star is of course the food! We have tried spicy garlic cucumbers, KFC Bao, Crispy Vietnamese Rolls (!!!), Hot oil dumplings, and my favorite dish there - Laksa - chicken, roasted pork, bean sprout, shoyu egg, tofu puff, crispy bean curd in a coconut curry based broth! Mouth watering just writing about it. I can't wait to go back!

Ask the Community - Mama Chow

Are they allowing indoor seating during Covid? Hard to tell from website or here on Yelp?

2022 now, yes they do! First come first serve basis

Is there a large bar area? As in larger than Mecha?

yes, there is a small bar area...but it isn't the type of place you'd go to hang at a bar...its closer to a "service bar" but they wouldn't chase you away if you sat there.

Good for large groups for lunch? (8-10 people)

Yes!

Is the restaurant kid friendly?

Not a worry, kids young and old during my visits.

Ive been there for dinner time as well, it's lively, loud in a good way, and immediately feels like somewhere you could stay for hours. I ordered the miso ramen, and it was honestly one of the most satisfying bowls of ramen I've had in Connecticut. The broth was the star of the dish its deep, rich, savory, and layered with that perfect balance of umami and subtle sweetness from the miso and a bit nitty form the sesame seeds. The noodles had the perfect texture: chewy, springy, and able to hold onto the broth beautifully. Nothing was overcooked or mushy . What impressed me most was how balanced the ramen was. Some ramen spots go overboard with salt or spice, but this bowl felt refined. Rich but not greasy. Flavorful but not overpowering. You could tell there was actual technique behind it. The portion size was also generous enough to leave completely full without feeling uncomfortable afterward. The service matched the food perfectly and so freaking sweet. The decor is a lovely authentic izakaya with the wood paneling and everything. It's a beautiful homage to Japanese culture. Ok now menu. Lunch there is great but recommend going for the dinner menu over anything to have more options! The addictive cabbage is just as it says, addicting. It's acidic, savory and has the perfect crunch to it. The crab Rangoons are sooo good. They give you plenty of sauce and you can tell it's the good crab. The cold sesame noodles are perfect! A little bit of heat, a bunch of flavor. I'm drooling just thinking about it! The chili dumplings were good but a little too spicy for me! We also really enjoyed the kimchi carbonara and personally, I'm a sucker for udon noodles! And now the star of the show for me and something I've ordered three times now! The crab fried rice! The crab is so tender and buttery, like it actually melts in your mouth. And the pork belly chunks in it, also tender and delicious. I like dream of this dish every week! And the great thing is you can order the half size during dinner so you can try other things too! This spot is in my top 5 for 2026 so far! Please go try them asap!

I finally visited around 3:15 on a recent Saturday afternoon. The space is very nice and includes high ceilings, cool light fixtures, light colored woods and white chairs. The server recommended Curry Crispy Chicken Noodles, but she warned I might think they're spicy. I loved these noodles. The curry broth was flavorful, but not too spicy. The noodles had great texture. The crispy chicken was very satisfying. The potatoes and carrots were well executed. The punches of cilantro were very fresh. It was a great bowl of noodles. I like how the table has chili sauce available to add spice to anything. To drink I got a house made black tea, a lychee martini, and a mai tai; all tasted good. I ordered two miso ramen with a load of add-ons to go following the epic snowstorm... it was positively delicious. Broth was balanced, savory and had the perfect aspect of heat... pork belly was cooked to perfection and I love how they prepare the perfect tamago (egg). A special treat is the saki flight-- Hayro is very well versed in his tasting note knowledge and origins of the featured sakis and was ultra kind, consistent with his execution of dynamic cocktails behind the bar. Love the ambiance, music is always on point and the bar set-up is ultra inviting... I prefer that over sitting in a booth. Rafael, the manager, was ultra attentive and very gracious towards me as a waiting patron... he even surprised me with a little KFC Bao which was absolutely magical with the sauces provided! Professionalism 10.0 and so endearing! I would recommend double checking your to go orders, especially if the order is a bit complex or heavy on the add-on factor (my cabbage was left out but I believe it was substituted for a larger order of greens)... but Betsy was polite and patient amidst me being a picky foodie in my ordering process! She gave us some time to socialize, choose our meals and looked after us as if we were her only table (while taking care of a couple other tables at the same time).
