I came back to try the hot oil dumplings and they were excellent, with a tender flavorful pork filling inside, and crispy shallots to add a textural element with hot chili oil and fresh cilantro. This is a generous portion which filled me up ( I was originally going to order 2!) The chili oil is hot, but not so hot and I wanted to drink what was left! Great app for sharing. Possibly one of the easiest 5 star ratings I've ever given out, Mama Chow's has delicious food. The inside is nice, and service is great. But the food, man, the food. We ordered the KFC bao buns - very tasty right off the bat. Then we got an order of the KLM, a spicy miso ramen and the pho king. All were excellent. The KLM noodles were sweet and the pork tender and delicious. The spicy miso ramen was excellent - perfectly spicy while still delivering flavor. And the short rib in the pho king was excellent. A lot of times, take out cannot compare to the quality of the food when it is served hot and straight from the kitchen. This must have been the case with Mama Chow. We ordered several dishes but most of them were dry by the time they got back to the house. Based on other people's happy reviews, this must not be representative of what the restaurant normally produces. The place was crowded when we arrived to pick up our order so I guess it is not surprising that it was still not ready even after waiting. Our favorites were the bao buns (we ordered the KFC chicken and the pork belly). The portions were generous and, even though, as stated, they were dry, we especially liked the pickled veggies that came with the pork belly version. The crispy roll was crispy but again, not that hot, understandably, and needed a lot of sauce. The hot oil dumplings , KLM and grilled pork with sticky rice were fine. The mala beef seemed to be floating in oil. All in all, we were disappointed but we may try Mama Chow again, this time dining in and hoping for better results. read more

5 stars - this place is SO GOOD! A hidden gem with a variety of hawker stand style dishes. As an Asian person I find it an ominous sign when an Asian restaurant doesn't have many Asian customers -- not the case at Mama Chow! I was pleased to see customers were plentiful (both dine-in and takeout) and the majority were Asian. We tried: KFC Bao, crispy Vietnamese rolls, shrimp butter yolk, laska and the bubble waffle for dessert. KFC Bao - two big baos with a generous portion of crispy fried chicken. Really delicious! Crispy Vietnamese Rolls - Must try. Super crispy (interesting batter) and hot with a wonderful nuoc mam dipping sauce. Shrimp butter yolk - not my favorite but my wife loved it. I admittedly am not the biggest shrimp butter. Laska - Wow, incredibly hot, sour and flavorful. Giant portion loaded with chicken and roasted pork. Jammy egg was perfect. Bubble waffle with black sesame ice cream - I thought the waffle was a tad overbaked but the ice cream was perfect. Service was friendly and fast; we spoke to the owner who is from Malaysia so you know the food is authentic. The food is very affordable and portions are HUGE. The simple menu is way off the charts in quality and taste- tried almost everything since we had a large group Family-run business with a sophisticated and brilliant knack for good food and the dishes come out blazing hot. That is fresh - no wait time. That is superb timing and execution. This is almost the calibre of a Michellin restaurant. This review will not do it justice. They take no reservations and the workers were nonstop working. The kitchen did not have a break all night - tables were just turning over. Goodness!! This is the major reason why the location is receiving a bajillion stars from me. Everyone raved about the good food. For me the showstopper was the pandan panna cotta - oh my louise! The tip for us was 30% - so so so well deserved, and we decided at the end to add additional, end of night. Service is undeniably above and beyond - they poured water nonstop and was able to keep asking the customers to check up on them. These steps in caring wholeheartedly for customers may not be even taught at the finest hospitality training school. The authentic touch with their customer service comes with genuine character and that was really felt throughout- partially as a family-run operation but the staff/owners also carried the night with cordial ambiance. I visited Mama Chow (No. 8) as part of my tour of CT Yelp's Top 25 Places to Eat. Mama Chow is a cozy, modern and casual Asian Fusion spot serving ramen, other soups, small plates, noodle dishes, etc. Service was very friendly. I was impressed with the two dishes I tried. The mushroom dumplings in creamy miso sauce were savory and delicious. They were topped with greens for contrasting color, texture and flavor. I recommend this dish. I also ordered the CKT (aka Char Kway Teow). It was more or less a stir fry of things such as sweet Chinese sausage, fish cakes, bean sprouts, egg, choy sum (a leafy vegetable that reminded a bit of mustard greens) and short and wide noodles, served in a savory glaze. The dish, which came out steaming hot, was delicious and such fantastic comfort food. If I lived in the area, I would order it regularly after sampling the rest of the menu. Mama Chow is one of our most favorite places to go eat in the area. I absolutely love the kind people that work there, the service is top notch. The place itself is small, and right off the main road, so easy to get to. But the star is of course the food! We have tried spicy garlic cucumbers, KFC Bao, Crispy Vietnamese Rolls (!!!), Hot oil dumplings, and my favorite dish there - Laksa - chicken, roasted pork, bean sprout, shoyu egg, tofu puff, crispy bean curd in a coconut curry based broth! The Pho had the most flavorless broth I've ever had....and I thought Mecha was watered down. Bao was ok, same as Mecha. A shame as Fairfield needs a good Pho joint. Pho Na Tra USED to be better than either..but it's under new ownership it seems. And it was downright terrible the last time we were there. These specials run the gamut from perennial favorites such as Beef Rendang, Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak to exotic dishes such as Assam Laksa and Oxtail Soup. This myriad assortment is welcomed by its patrons, especially the Malaysian diaspora. It also showcases the versatility of Kim (owner and head chef). Here's what we have sampled: Beef Rendang - Delicious fork tender beef chunks stewed in aromatic rendang gravy, served alongside cucumber pickles and coconut rice that had been fragranced with pandan leaves. Chicken Rice - Tasty poached chicken with rice cooked in the chicken stock. Rice was very flavourful, the crisp shallot toppings provided a nice crunch. This dish came with servings of sliced cucumbers, a handful of cilantro, a rich chicken broth and the traditional ginger and chilli dips. Scrumptiously good, everything from the poached chicken to the dips were prepared from scratch. Prawn Mee - This prawn noodle soup is reminiscent of those served in Kuala Lumpur. A combo of egg noodles and thin rice vermicelli is served in a flavoursome, slightly spicy pork and prawn broth. Toppings include fish balls, shrimps, blanched bok choy, pork slices and half a poached egg. Assam Laksa, a rice noodle soup in a spicy piquant fish broth popular in Penang. Kudos to Mama Chow for featuring it as part of their specials as this dish is rarely offered outside of Malaysia. It is as authentic as you can get back home and the portions are generous. Mama Chow's Pandan Cotta, a delectable milky jelly dessert flavoured with pandan leaves and served drizzled with brown sugar syrup, is a must try. One could also savour Malaysian durian, the highly sought-after Musang King variety, here as well. Interesting menu options make Mama Chow a destination for Malaysian/ Asian food. read more

I highly recommend this place. It's a gem of a restaurant with very good food. Their food is pan Asian but focuses on Singaporean street food. They echo this in their decor with string lights and a mural of a street food scene (taken in Taiwan). I had the Kon Lo Mee which I highly recommend. Also the hot oil dumplings are not to be missed. the hot oil dumplings here are as good as advertised and more! the condiments and toppings are so savory and delicious - the chili oil, scallions, vinegar, coriander and cilantro came together so well! the dumplings themselves were really juicy and meaty. note that they're pan-fried and not steamed/boiled. the laksa broth was super tasty and fragrant and they do give you a good portion of meat. however, the chicken in the laksa was overlooked to the point of having the texture of dry cardboard, which was super disappointing. we couldn't eat any of it, just chewing it was like trying to eat old shoelaces. service was attentive, water was frequently refilled. the ambience of the place was cute and casual. will be coming back but for the seafood laksa next time around read more

We had: Hot oil dumplings (ah-mazing, not crazy spicy but it does have the most amazing sauce that we slathered onto the dumplings) Crispy spring rolls: super crispy, filling, wrap it in the lettuce Pork belly bao buns: full of flavor from the spicy(ish) hoisin sauce, pork belly was tender and flavorful. Pork with sticky rice: yum, authentic sticky rice in banana leaf Pork ribs: prob the least flavorful but still super tasty. Chicken ramen: rich broth, chewy noodles. So I finally made the trip here with LRoth over the summer. It's a little tricky to get to if you're on the opposite side of the road, since you can't easily make a left. The place is small but cozy. The pork belly baos were delicious. Pork belly was a huge chunk. It's not as cooked down for my taste but still tasty. The shrimp butter yolk was okay. The butter yolk didn't really come through. Viet crispy rolls were pretty good. Nothing stood out but still good. The KFC bao was good but not as good as the pork. Nasi goreng was flavorful. The CKT was my jam though. It is so nice to know they are from Malaysia and they speak Cantonese like I do. My family all give 5 stars for the food because everything taste great after 20mins driving home. Vietnamese spring roll - they use rice paper, has pork, glass noodkes and wood ears in it, authentic enough and taste so good. It comes with 4 in an order. (It will be nice if they add Cilantro on the side with the lettuce) Seafood Laksa Soup - very rich coconut curry not Spicy (you can have the homemade special hot sauce on the side) it has Shrimp, squid, scallops and clam all fresh ingredients. Lucky We ordered two! Oh... There's tofu too which it was gone before i can taste it , until next time Pho King - few big chunk of beef ribs, chew noodles and excellent broth! My husband and I have been to Mama Chow almost weekly for a year, so we tried almost the entire menu. Appetizers: Shrimp butter yolk - shrimp with a sauce made out of yolk and butter. Sounds strange, but it's the most delicious rich yet delicate sauce. I've never had anything like it. The shrimp are large and always perfectly cooked! Spicy garlic cucumbers - refreshing, slightly spicy, with a crunch from the cucumbers. This dish is truly better when dining in, because the cucumbers get slightly soggy and lose their crunch for takeout. Seasoned Edamame - this is my husband's favorite. The fried herbs, little onions, and garlic really make a simple food like edamame exciting. Tamarind wings - These wings are fried to order and coated in a sweet and sour tamarind glaze. When you order these to-go, the glaze is on the side, so I recommend dining in for these. Hot oil dumplings - soft dumplings with a generous amount of filling. They're coated in chili oil and garnished with fried shallots, which is an amazing textural contrast to the dumplings. If you can handle a little bit of heat get these! King do pork ribs - if the wings sound good, try this, too. Despite being fried, somehow they don't feel heavy, but the portion is big enough to be an entree. Pork belly bao - my favorite pork belly bao is at Ippudo in NYC, but these are the closest that I've tried. Rich pork belly in a pillowy soft steamed bun. You can't really go wrong here. Mushroom dumplings - if you can't handle spice then choose the mushroom dumplings over the hot oil dumplings. The sauce on these is very delicate and creamy. I prefer the hot oil dumplings, but my family prefers these. Crispy Vietnamese rolls - there are so many good dishes at Mama Chow, so I tend to skip this one. My husband loves these - he says they're really well made traditional Vietnamese rolls. It's mostly about the crispy texture and freshness from the leaves enveloped in the sweet and sour dipping sauce. KFC bao - the fried chicken is super crispy. The textural experience is on another level with this one. So if you're in the mood for something crispy this is for you! Steamed string beans / steamed eggplant specials: I prefer the string beans to the eggplant, but that's only because I prefer string beans to eggplant, in general. These two dishes are really simple and don't really stand out among all of the flavor bombs listed above. I'm really glad it's an option, though, because there are days when I just want some light healthy veggies. Kale salad - we ordered the kale salad only once. It was definitely unique to have fresh and fried kale mixed in one salad. Grilled pork w/ sticky rice - the reason this dish doesn't get much love from us is because we get the KLM most times and I rarely want grilled pork and then KLM Mala beef/tofu - my husband ordered the tofu version once. I don't remember what it tasted like, which is why it's at the bottom. Entrees: Klm - if it's your first time at Mama Chow, do yourself a favor and order this flavor bomb. You get the soft noodles with the flavor-packed and tender pork, wontons, some healthy bok choy, and some pickled serranos all in the most delicious sauce I've ever ever had. This is the dish that keeps us coming back. Pho - I prefer the Pho Grill. The grilled and seasoned meat is delicious on its own, but it also adds more flavor to the broth. Yaki udon supreme - mild, but impactful flavor. Mildly spicy with perfectly cooked seafood. If you're full this is a lighter option. Laksa - the three dishes above are our favorites, so that's what we get Ramen - you can get ramen anywhere. What you can't get anywhere is the KLM. You can get pho in a lot of places, too, but it's amazing here. There was a point in time when I would get pho everyday for lunch in Manhattan's Chinatown; I prefer this one. CKT and Nasi Goreng weren't our favorite. They have specials, but you may need to call and reserve before they sell out. Keep up with the specials on Facebook and Instagram. Dessert: Can't go wrong with bubble waffles or ice cream. Drinks: Freshly squeezed and tart limeade or unsweetened tea help cut through the richness of the food. They serve alcohol, but I don't drink. The menu is similar to Mecha. However, I prefer Mama Chow in every way, except for the ramen. I also prefer the service. Coming to Mama Chow is like being invited into the Chow home. Everyone is so friendly! Papa Chow even comes out of the kitchen to chat when it's not too busy. Everyone works so hard and their passion is crystal clear. They don't take reservations, but we've never had to wait. Parking is plentiful. They're kid friendly - we come with our baby. read more
