Shanghai Gourmet Regular I eat at Shanghai Gourmet every Monday for months now. The owner(s) always greet me with a smile and already know my order, but still ask if i'll be having the usual. Let me start by saying i am very picky, particular and OCD about my food (and most other things) and Shanghai Gourmet has yet to disappoint in dozens of trips. "The Usual": Wok-seared Chicken in Garlic Sauce, extra sauce on side (important) with Mixed Veggies (Freshly sliced daily, NOT canned!) and brown rice. Won Ton soup is included for the lunch special. Let me just say, EVERY week it comes out the same; Very Hot, perfectly seared, just firm enough steamed veggies and al dente steamed rice which goes great with a sprinkle of the garlic sauce on the top. The Garlic Sauce is spicy, but not overbearing. It has fresh sliced jalapeños and garlic, along with red pepper flake. Find that at another Chinese restaurant. It is great on the side to add to rice and a little extra for the entree (highly recommend, adds great flavor). Veggies are hand chopped daily and never frozen. I highly recommend getting the veggies over the Green Beans that come with the menu-based Garlic Chicken. Green beans are good, but the mixed veggies just add so much to the dish. Soups are all freshly made. I get the Won Ton. The won tons are handmade and very light. I find this pleasing and not over-filling. Fresh scallions garnish the soup and add a nice flavor. Out doing a little late Black Friday shopping and was sick of turkey already so figure I'd grab some Chinese takeout from this unassuming place I was passing. A look at the restaurant space screamed takeout only although there are 6 tables for eating in. Small, but definitely clean looking. Quick glance at the menu showed the regular Chinese dishes plus some that seemed Thai inspired. Lots of ginger and glazed dishes that sounded well worth a try. Not wanting to risk much after a long day of shopping, I settled on General Tso, boneless ribs, and crab Rangoon. My wife picked out the Chicken Lettuce Cups (which was an item posted on the wall). The Crab Rangoon was nicely filled, impeccably cooked, and had an amazing flavor that hinted of spring onions (which oddly enough isn't one of my preferred flavors but dazzles here). Boneless ribs were really more like small slices of roast pork. Not the heavily glazed, sweet dish I was expecting. Instead really nice bits of yummy pork. The General. Both the breading and sauce were lighter than expected. The chicken itself was delicut and tender while the breading gentle and perfect for holding the sauce. The sauce held a late kick that built piece after piece. The lettuce cups consisted of perfectly seasoned diced vegetables and chicken which were well served by the crisp iceberg lettuce. Years from now I'll long forget the Black Holiday store sales, but will cherish my first visit to this gem of a hole in the wall. read more

This is the absolute best wonton soup I've ever had in my life. The MOST delicate wontons and the broth is incredible. Lunch specials are great and good portion sizes. Treat yourself to the cold sesame noodles. Delicious. The lettuce cups with chicken were so filling and incredibly abundant in portion size. I can't say enough about it. Of all the restaurants, these folks never over cook their beef, seafood, chicken or pork. My family ordered dinner from here last Friday. There are several good Chinese takeout places in the Westport area (Tiger Bowl was always a favorite growing up), and Shanghai Gourmet was solid. I really appreciate that their sesame chicken has so much chicken in it: sometimes when you get Chinese takeout, there's so much breading and very little actual meat. Shanghai's was really great in that regard. We ordered a few other dishes - Scallop & Shrimp Hunan Style and something with tofu - but I didn't try those so can't speak to how they tasted. My brother sure seemed to like both, though. This wasn't our first time ordering from here, and everything always tastes very fresh. The szechuan dumplings are particularly good. read more

It's our go-to Chinese takeout. What we like: their egg rolls. Singapore mai fun (super large portion, can eat it for days). Their Szechuan dumplings. Their pork fried dumplings. Classic chicken and broccoli. Their pork fried rice. Pretty much every thing is fresh and hot with nice-sized potions. Really good soups! We tried the Tom Yum (Spelled Tom Yam on the Menu) and the other Shanghai style noodle soup. Both of them came with thick udon style noodles in a very rich but not overpowering broth. The Tom Yum was ordered with chicken, and they didn't skimp on the portions. There was tender and flavorful chicken in every bite until the very end. I had my soup with seafood, and it came with a nice variety of prawns that had been well cleaned (I don't like poopy backs) and scallops. Delicious mushroom-y broth (I think) and not full of soy sauce like some other soups of its kind. My wife and I are sort of soup aficionados and we haven't had soups like this in the area. One thing I like about Shanghai Gourmet is how quickly the food is ready. I normally order during lunch time and it's ready for pick up by the time I arrive! Of course the food is delicious too. I have eaten here about a dozen times. A few times the food was good, most times average, and sometimes awful. I joked with my wife that they must rotate their cooks, and we hope the "good" cook is there on the day we order. But life is too short and I work hard for my money. By far the best Chinese food I have ever had. I live one town over on the opposite side of town and I will not go anywhere else. If I am eating Chinese I will make the time to drive here or I will wait for another day. The chicken is all white meat, the food is not too greasy or salty. It is the ideal spot with a great staff! I'd say this place is average. Clean, pleasant, nice. I guess CT really doesn't have any good authentic Chinese food, which is what has gotten this place some pretty good reviews. I'm always impressed when I find reasonably priced, high quality Chinese food. Shanghai Gourmet is one of these rare finds. While dining in can be an adventure (there's maybe 15 seats...) it's just fine if you don't hit them at peak times as pickups are the biggest part of their business. The owners are friendly and have incredible memories for your first name, which they call out cheerfully when you walk in the door. WHERE'S THE BEEF? This is the second time eating here and twice I've been disappointed, no more second chances. Last time they gave me 90% vegetables and 10% beef on my plate. I called in for takeout and ask to PAY MORE for more beef on my dish. I get home and find that it's still the same story. My regular local haunt for Asian food. Great spring rolls (you need to ask for hot mustard they make) not the crap in the tube. Best dishes - Wok shrimp, Singapore Noodles, Stir fry anything with Peppercorn sauce, Sambal anything. Big bowl soups. Service is friendly. Place seems clean, I have been in some kitchens watching the cook's stir frying food while their cigarette ash drops in the wok!! This was hands down, the WORST Chinese food I've ever had. I will not go back, and am writing this in case anyone decides to go here. Save your $$ and calories. We ordered "steamed dumplings" that were probably the grossest things I've ever tasted. It was thick, frozen noodles that were not properly thawed (waitress confirmed this??) and after two bites we spit them out because of ice in the middle. Btw, the waitress did not refund the money. The main meal was swimming in a puddle of grease and the spices weren't mixed together properly so every so often you'd get a splotch of spice and then nothing for awhile. Chicken was rubbery. Shrimp wasn't cleaned out. Rice was clumpy. Nightmare. Served on paper plates. Tea in paper cups. What else can I say?? Literally so bad that I'm probably going to avoid Chinese altogether for awhile again because it was NASTY. read more

If I could give this 3.5 stars, I would - the staff is lovely, the restaurant is tiny but clean and warm, and it's become our go-to takeout place. However, the food is somewhere between good and uneven: everything's extremely fresh and they use "real" vegetables, i.e. crisp, fresh batons of zucchini, jicama (like water chestnut but bigger and sweet), bell peppers, etc., but sometimes the flavors are lacking. It all kind of tastes similar if you order from the Chinese part of the menu (vs. thai/pan-Asian). One stand out is/are their noodle soups, which are huge and fresh and fun, delivered with the noodles and vegetables separate from the broth so they don't overcook. We'll continue to order from here until the Southport/Fairfield/Westport area gets a real Chinese restaurant, and then, I'll confess, we probably won't look back. One more comment: there is a "sister" restaurant in Norwalk on Rt. 123/New Canaan Ave. that is consistently delicious. I wish they would switch places. read more

I used to come here when I worked nearby and it was awesome! We came here regularly with my coworkers. Fast forward 3 years... I stop by with a friend and our kids. The prices are up, the portions are waaaay down, the flavor is way down and it's just not what it used to be and not what I have grown to expect from decent Asian dining. I ordered soup, got less than half a bowl, ordered a shrimp lunch item, and got three medium shrimp. The portions are plated like a French restaurant. 80% plate 20% food...Way to save money! My kids love certain staple Chinese dishes and two of them didn't even want to continue eating after a few bites. Too bad, because this place rocked at one point. read more
