Pandan matcha and ube cream latte with ube churros
    Jason Y.

Stopped by Malaya in Arcadia, a fairly new Filipino-inspired coffee spot with unique drink flavors. I liked that they incorporate Filipino flavors into their matchas and lattes since it gives the menu something different from the usual coffee options. I ordered the ube cream latte which had a strong, earthy coffee flavor and wasn't overly sweet. My friend got the pandan matcha which was lighter, creamier, and more milky. We also tried the ube churros and these were probably my favorite item we ordered. They were super crispy on the outside while staying soft inside. The sauce also wasn't too sweet, which I appreciated, and I liked the Oreo crumble topping that added extra texture. I noticed they also have food items on the menu, so I'll definitely be back to try more next time. Nice spot to check out if you're in the area and looking for coffee with a Filipino twist.

I love Malaya. Seeing their expansion has been so fun. They prove that Filipino food isn't a trend, it isn't temporary, but it's really making its own lasting waves. My pride for Filipino food popping up throughout the San Gabriel Valley has made for a very happy heart. Malaya specifically is such a nostalgic & present-time fusion. From a spam breakfast sandwich to a maple bacon enseymada. Not to mention their matcha, malaya signature, and their turon/banana caramel flavored latte. All ordered with oatmilk for extra creaminess! Had such a fun convo with one of the owners about the space they locked in at Arcadia and how creative they can get with the outdoor, drive-in type of space. Also, it's a GREAT work from home spot with outlets galore and open air seating. For someone who tends to actually work from home but loves her change of scenery and needs that breath of fresh air outside of both home and office space... Malaya's second location is exactly what I needed. The nostalgic and cultural details are additional, happy, bonus points that are always an automatic gravitational pull for me whenever I'm driving within the area. Waiting to go back and try more of the menu real soon! Have a little chat with the owners. It adds to the warmth of the experience because I loved hearing about their ideas and where the name Malaya rooted from. To me, it's what reminds me of how much the filipino culture is pulsing throughout the heart of LA. Cheers to many more visits and places that highlight the beauty of Filipino culture and flavors. Malaya is really one of so many more I hope to give a little shout out and recognition to. One thing if ever, I'd love to try the spam breakfast sandwich but on a pandesal instead! Just to throw it out there and see.

So excited to have heard that Malaya was expanding and with a lunch a menu. As a fellow Fil-Am, I'm always rooting for more Filipino spots opening to showcase a piece of my culture. I came around the time of their soft opening. I ordered a caramel banana latte, and it was really good! I also ordered a spam breakfast sandwich and it was good. My only thing is that I wish it was a little cheaper for a sweet treat, but I guess with all coffee shops, everything is so much more expensive now. Hoping that coffee shops won't charge extra for milk alternatives in the future.

    Pandan Churros and Ube Ensaymada

I've been wanting to try this place and when I saw they opened a second location I finally went. I ordered the Pandan Matcha, Pandan Churros, and Ube Ensaymada. Everything was great! The Pandan Matcha had a good matcha flavor, the pandan part was light in flavor so the drink wasn't overly sweet. Lately when I've been trying new coffee shops other place's matcha drinks always just taste like milk - so I appreciate that their matcha here was the perfect shade of green for my personal liking. The churros were fresh and crispy with a pandan glaze and toasted coconut flakes on top - I loved it! My favorite part was the Ube Ensaymada. It was extremely soft and pillowy - it reminded me of my childhood. I definitely want to try more of their flavors! They have a pick up window and some seating in an outside covered patio area if you're wanting to dine there. Their personal parking lot also made it easy to access. Can't wait to come back and try more of what they have to offer!

Had to give this spot a second try since there is a Doordash promo of 45% off orders of $12+! The Malaya Signature Latte ($7.50) consisted of espresso with milk and cocoa powder. I enjoyed the coffee wasn't too strong and overpowering. I got it with regular ice and oat milk (+$0.25) and it was stuffed with plenty of ice but not a big deal. It was creamy and milky. It wasn't too sweet since I got it quarter sweet. The hint of cinnamon and cocoa made the drink very good so overall, I enjoyed this drink. The Pandan Matcha ($7.25) was decent. I got it iced with oat milk (+$0.25) and half sweet. The Matcha wasn't as strong in flavor as I like and the quality was just ok. I don't think they handwhisk their matcha or use ceremonial grade matcha but not a big deal. The Pandan was quite subtle and not too sweet. I thought this drink was more milky than I was expecting so I thought it was just alright. Overall, I prefer the coffee over matcha drinks and the price feels slightly high but I'm glad I gave this spot another try. NOTE: Don't forget to request for straws otherwise it doesn't come with them!

If they want to stay in business, they need to cut down on prices

It seems the owners are not well experienced with a small restaurant/cafe. They were not able to give you any receipts or numbers after you placed the order. Out of 3 entree items, 2 were already sold out by 12 noon which means they never stocked those and they only want to cook up one item. It's definitely pricer than Chaaste in Pasadena, $13 for palm size burger!! They need to add rice combo plates if want to please Asian crowds. Hello this is Arcadia!

Came on a Sunday around 230pm. We ordered the ube crème and signature malaya latte. There likely was a huge rush but it took us 15 min to order and another 35-40 minutes to receive our drinks. It looked like they were understaffed and poor guy making the drinks he was all by himself and doing his best. We noticed that customers in front of us were having issues with their orders and we think this could be improved if Malaya gets a mic/speaker to call out the orders and maybe check receipts to ensure the customers are picking up the right order. It was hard to hear what names were being called with the music playing in the patio area. I recognize they were understaffed but I hope Malaya Arcadia improves their processes because I do want this place to succeed. The ube crème latte didn't have enough ube, it mainly just tasted like milk and the Malaya signature latte tasted like a normal brown sugar latte. I'm not in a rush to come back but if I do, I'd like to try their food options. There is plenty of parking with good amount of counter top seating and chairs and music playing on speakers for the vibes. Service 1/5 stars & Drinks 3/5 stars.

Ube and pandan both were solid! what a fun great addition to this area. Flavors of the ensaymadas were ube, ube crème, salted egg, strawberry, guava, and a bunch more I couldn't remember. Option to warm it up. We had the salted egg. Big parking lot with shaded tables and chairs.

Malaya Signature - nicely balanced coffee and sweetness, good amount of cream topping

First visit and customer service was friendly and helpful. Came specifically to support new business in my neighborhood. Coffee was good, pricing competitive, and covered patio is comfortable. Parking on site. Will visit again to try matcha.

I've been wanting to check this out since they opened up in the neighborhood, but just haven't had a chance till now, & am glad we got to! Super excited to support a local API-OWNED independent business! Friendly & helpful staff greeted us! They also looked like they were having fun, which was a pleasant change! The menu is not super extensive but had a nice variety, with a good mix of food & drinks. I am hopeful more food items will be added as they establish themselves here, especially ethnically interesting foods! We had chicken Adobo bowls, which was not on their regular menu but part of an AAPI month promo. Yes, they should put it on their regular menu, tasty sauce! Also ordered pandan churros, which was different, and mini lumpias. My husband also ordered their Signature Malaya Latte, which he promptly chugged, before the food was out, lol. The seating area is an outdoor space, and they had music playing, so it had a relaxed and casual vibe. Good for small groups and hanging out. They even have free wifi! Think they have it pegged, being close to two middle schools, lol. Looking forward to checking out all the other menu items!! Excited to see how they will progress & hope they build a steady customer pool!

Plain Matcha Latte + Queso Ensaymada

New cafe spot that serves coffee, matchas, pastries, and meals opened up in Arcadia! I've seen a lot of social media posts from Malaya on social media and decided to stop by and try it! Their location has tons of parking available on the street and in the lot. I stopped by on Thursday 30 minutes from closing (oops) and they still had a few people ordering! They have a beautifully painted mural on the side of the ordering window and plenty of outdoor seating available to enjoy your food and drinks. The person that took our order was very nice and gave us recommendations on what to get since it was our first time here. Food ($15.75): Queso Ensaymada (8/10): This was my first time ever having an ensaymada and wow, need it again. It's a soft, freshly baked brioche bun with melted cheese and a sweet white sauce on top. It was peel-able and warm! The saltiness of the cheese helped added a nice touch to the sweetness of the bun and the sauce (?) that was drizzled on top. Plain Matcha Latte (6/10): This one was honestly my fault... I read through multiple reviews from other people saying that the sweetness of the matcha could be balanced out by the cream top (it did not). The person taking my order did warn me that the plain matcha had no sweeter. It was still drinkable but wasn't as enjoyable as I prefer matcha lattes to be. The cream top is an extra 75 cent add-on.

Malaya Coffee Special + Banana Latte Coffee
    Denise P.

I heard about Malaya Coffee's opening in Arcadia and I was super excited to finally see a Filipino-owned business in the area! They are located in the downtown area, with plenty of parking and an outdoor patio. I am hoping that more businesses could open here in the future so this area would thrive and be a hangout spot in the future. You would order your food from their kiosk and stay if you would like in one of the tables to eat your food. I ordered their Malaya coffee special and banana coffee. I personally thought that their coffee could be stronger in caffeine. The prices felt a little too high for me. I did not get to try their food so I definitely need to come back. The ambiance was nice and I could imagine myself studying here but I don't see any plugs or WiFi provided. Other than that, the space is quiet and a great addition to the community!

This is a small Market that has a little bit of everything that you're looking for from Southeast Asia. It's like a 7-Eleven, Filipino style. It's fun to look at the various items available here. You will always end up with more than just what you were looking for. I enjoy the cracker nuts, dried mangoes, and specialty dried items. Their selection of items is always changing so I like to look at what's new and on display. I will sometimes ask the front counter what just came in. The Fresh Deli, located up a small incline to the left as you enter the market, is spectacular. The flavor of the food permeates the entrance to the market. They have an incredible selection of fresh made food. It is difficult to make a decision between the different items. I asked for some help from the gentleman behind the counter. I've dealt with Christian, Gabriel and Abraham and all three are knowledgeable and helpful. He was able to explain how some of the food was prepared and the special attention that was given to each individual item. I wanted to limit myself to two items. I decided on the special marinated Beef Caldereta and the Lechon Kawali. On another trip I decided to try the Pork Tochino and the Barbecue Chicken Skewers. I can't tell you how happy I am with the flavors of the food from the deli. Everything was done to perfection. The Chicken skewers were tender and moist with a great barbecue flavor. The Toccino had a nice marinade flavor and was not too sweet. The Lechon was tender and had enough fat to give it a great flavor and texture. I have to admit the Caldereta was my favorite. Great taste, texture, and just the right spices to give it a little kick. The rice and noodles were a perfect accompaniment. All the sauces I was given added to the flavor of all the dishes. At the cash register at the front counter I paid for my items and asked about other items coming in in the near future. I found out that they are not always sure what's going to become available but always looking for something that will make their customers happy. This is truly a family establishment. I found out that everybody there is related. They definitely give exceptional service and quality merchandise, and delicious food. I look forward to coming back and trying many other items both in their market area as well as the Deli.

For how much we ordered, the food didn't take too long to come out and genuinely, was so good. We got a lot here, from the garlic shrimp to the popcorn chicken, and so much more. The popcorn chicken was, without a doubt, my favorite item. We originally came here because a friend said they had the best popcorn chicken, and I'd honestly agree. It was crispy but also still a bit juicy and I feel like most places go heavily into the crisp aspect and it ends up just seeming overcooked. But it was a 10/10 here. The proportions are huge, so it's easy to over order. The crab rangoons were good on the portions and crispness and not overly filled with cream cheese which is nice. The noodles were good, pretty average, same with the Mac salad. The garlic shrimp was a bit overly garlic-y, but it was still good. If you're looking for a new Hawaiian spot, definitely check out TK Cafe. The proportions are huge and the taste is amazing. If I'm ever in Monrovia again, I'd definitely be stopping by!

I asked for the pork sisig ala carte and decided to add an order of kalderetang kambing and 2c of rice. Big mistake buying more than one entree when you are taking it home and have no clue how their food tastes. I trusted Yelp too much. . Sisig had a 1:1 ratio of meat to bell peppers. I also couldn't help but feel lile the peppers were undercooked, even raw. Maybe that was their style, but I also disliked the mayo on top. Now the kalderetang kambing had a strange fishy (gamey) smell in the car. When I tried it at home, the meat looked so red and tasted way too sweet, not at all like the Kalderetas I'm used to back home. The meat was falling off the bone soft though. This is my problem with Filipino restaurants in the US - if they can't make dishes better tasting than what I make at home (i rarely cook but im a good eater), I cannot rate them high at all. I've eaten too much Filipino food in my life to know what tastes good. I feel bad because the folks who work here/(owners?) are pretty nice and they were working on Valentines. But the current rating they have is misleading. If you're going for the big entrees like I did, and are used to Gerry's Grill type sisig, prepare to be disappointed. Yelp, you did not come thru for me this time.
