This was a solid matcha/coffee spot with a Filipino twist. I had to try the seasonal melon matcha, consisting of fresh melon juice, matcha, and some sort of cream top. The melon juice and matcha combo was so refreshing and perfect for summer. I didn't prefer the cream top, I found it detracting from the juice/refreshing edge of the drink. The fresh melon juice was so good though so it wasn't a deal breaker. There was a lot of easy parking and the outdoor seating is very reminisce of cafes in the Philippines. Waited about 20-25 mins for the tapa plate. I didn't realize that everyone was also waiting for their food. Overheard a guest who was getting frustrated for waiting over 20 mins for a sandwich. Tapa plate was mid. They brought out the drinks so quickly... but.. since I waited for the plate, had to drive to my friends, the drinks started to get diluted. By the time we drank the matchas, they were already watery. The strawberry matcha seemed like it used strawberry milk rather than a puree. I guess next time I'll stick to drinks and come on a slower day. But there were about 6 people working at the time I went, so I'm not too sure what happened there. read more

Stopped by Malaya in Arcadia, a fairly new Filipino-inspired coffee spot with unique drink flavors. I liked that they incorporate Filipino flavors into their matchas and lattes since it gives the menu something different from the usual coffee options. I ordered the ube cream latte which had a strong, earthy coffee flavor and wasn't overly sweet. My friend got the pandan matcha which was lighter, creamier, and more milky. We also tried the ube churros and these were probably my favorite item we ordered. They were super crispy on the outside while staying soft inside. The sauce also wasn't too sweet, which I appreciated, and I liked the Oreo crumble topping that added extra texture. I noticed they also have food items on the menu, so I'll definitely be back to try more next time. I love Malaya. Seeing their expansion has been so fun. They prove that Filipino food isn't a trend, it isn't temporary, but it's really making its own lasting waves. My pride for Filipino food popping up throughout the San Gabriel Valley has made for a very happy heart. Malaya specifically is such a nostalgic & present-time fusion. From a spam breakfast sandwich to a maple bacon enseymada. Not to mention their matcha, malaya signature, and their turon/banana caramel flavored latte. All ordered with oatmilk for extra creaminess! Had such a fun convo with one of the owners about the space they locked in at Arcadia and how creative they can get with the outdoor, drive-in type of space. Also, it's a GREAT work from home spot with outlets galore and open air seating. For someone who tends to actually work from home but loves her change of scenery and needs that breath of fresh air outside of both home and office space... Malaya's second location is exactly what I needed. The nostalgic and cultural details are additional, happy, bonus points that are always an automatic gravitational pull for me whenever I'm driving within the area. Waiting to go back and try more of the menu real soon! Have a little chat with the owners. It adds to the warmth of the experience because I loved hearing about their ideas and where the name Malaya rooted from. So excited to have heard that Malaya was expanding and with a lunch a menu. As a fellow Fil-Am, I'm always rooting for more Filipino spots opening to showcase a piece of my culture. I've been wanting to try this place and when I saw they opened a second location I finally went. I ordered the Pandan Matcha, Pandan Churros, and Ube Ensaymada. Everything was great! The Pandan Matcha had a good matcha flavor, the pandan part was light in flavor so the drink wasn't overly sweet. Lately when I've been trying new coffee shops other place's matcha drinks always just taste like milk - so I appreciate that their matcha here was the perfect shade of green for my personal liking. The churros were fresh and crispy with a pandan glaze and toasted coconut flakes on top - I loved it! My favorite part was the Ube Ensaymada. It was extremely soft and pillowy - it reminded me of my childhood. I definitely want to try more of their flavors! They have a pick up window and some seating in an outside covered patio area if you're wanting to dine there. Their personal parking lot also made it easy to access. Had to give this spot a second try since there is a Doordash promo of 45% off orders of $12+! The Malaya Signature Latte ($7.50) consisted of espresso with milk and cocoa powder. I enjoyed the coffee wasn't too strong and overpowering. I got it with regular ice and oat milk (+$0.25) and it was stuffed with plenty of ice but not a big deal. It was creamy and milky. It wasn't too sweet since I got it quarter sweet. The hint of cinnamon and cocoa made the drink very good so overall, I enjoyed this drink. The Pandan Matcha ($7.25) was decent. I got it iced with oat milk (+$0.25) and half sweet. The Matcha wasn't as strong in flavor as I like and the quality was just ok. I don't think they handwhisk their matcha or use ceremonial grade matcha but not a big deal. The Pandan was quite subtle and not too sweet. I thought this drink was more milky than I was expecting so I thought it was just alright. Overall, I prefer the coffee over matcha drinks and the price feels slightly high but I'm glad I gave this spot another try. Came on a Sunday around 230pm. We ordered the ube crème and signature malaya latte. There likely was a huge rush but it took us 15 min to order and another 35-40 minutes to receive our drinks. It looked like they were understaffed and poor guy making the drinks he was all by himself and doing his best. We noticed that customers in front of us were having issues with their orders and we think this could be improved if Malaya gets a mic/speaker to call out the orders and maybe check receipts to ensure the customers are picking up the right order. It was hard to hear what names were being called with the music playing in the patio area. I recognize they were understaffed but I hope Malaya Arcadia improves their processes because I do want this place to succeed. The ube crème latte didn't have enough ube, it mainly just tasted like milk and the Malaya signature latte tasted like a normal brown sugar latte. I'm not in a rush to come back but if I do, I'd like to try their food options. I've been wanting to check this out since they opened up in the neighborhood, but just haven't had a chance till now, & am glad we got to! Super excited to support a local API-OWNED independent business! Friendly & helpful staff greeted us! They also looked like they were having fun, which was a pleasant change! The menu is not super extensive but had a nice variety, with a good mix of food & drinks. I am hopeful more food items will be added as they establish themselves here, especially ethnically interesting foods! We had chicken Adobo bowls, which was not on their regular menu but part of an AAPI month promo. Yes, they should put it on their regular menu, tasty sauce! New cafe spot that serves coffee, matchas, pastries, and meals opened up in Arcadia! I've seen a lot of social media posts from Malaya on social media and decided to stop by and try it! Their location has tons of parking available on the street and in the lot. I stopped by on Thursday 30 minutes from closing (oops) and they still had a few people ordering! They have a beautifully painted mural on the side of the ordering window and plenty of outdoor seating available to enjoy your food and drinks. The person that took our order was very nice and gave us recommendations on what to get since it was our first time here. Food ($15.75): Queso Ensaymada (8/10): This was my first time ever having an ensaymada and wow, need it again. It's a soft, freshly baked brioche bun with melted cheese and a sweet white sauce on top. It was peel-able and warm! The saltiness of the cheese helped added a nice touch to the sweetness of the bun and the sauce (?) that was drizzled on top. Plain Matcha Latte (6/10): This one was honestly my fault... I read through multiple reviews from other people saying that the sweetness of the matcha could be balanced out by the cream top (it did not). The person taking my order did warn me that the plain matcha had no sweeter. It was still drinkable but wasn't as enjoyable as I prefer matcha lattes to be. I heard about Malaya Coffee's opening in Arcadia and I was super excited to finally see a Filipino-owned business in the area! They are located in the downtown area, with plenty of parking and an outdoor patio. I am hoping that more businesses could open here in the future so this area would thrive and be a hangout spot in the future. You would order your food from their kiosk and stay if you would like in one of the tables to eat your food. I ordered their Malaya coffee special and banana coffee. I personally thought that their coffee could be stronger in caffeine. The prices felt a little too high for me. I did not get to try their food so I definitely need to come back. Filipino coffee and brunch eatery that took over the old Bentoya and Flavor Fusion location on 1st Ave. ample parking. The food begins at 10am, which lines especially on weekends will develop. But for good reason, as it's quite tasty! We enjoyed their Spam Breakfast Sando, which had a nice spicy kick with their Chili crunch aoli sauce. The Lumpia was pretty standard but had a nice dipping sauce with it. The other standout was their Ensaymada (like the Spanish sweet bread with buttery topping). It was a very good small bread pastry, however just pricey considering it was $6.50 each. Tried their original, but they also have many other flavors (ex Guava and Red Velvet, etc) Their coffee was nice, but not as much of a standout as their food. Their Malaya signature was flavorful, as well as their Caramel Banana latte. Both ran quite sweet despite asking for less sweetness. Overall will be back. This new Filipino café has taken over the former Flavor Fusion space, and I love how they've brightened it up with lively Hawaiian flower murals. I stopped by for a drink after a Lagree class nearby. They were pretty busy, so it took a while before someone took my order, but the cashier was very kind and friendly once she helped me. I ordered a pandan latte with oat milk, which came out to $8.84 after tax, definitely on the pricier side for a small drink. The espresso itself was rich and flavorful, but I couldn't taste any pandan at all. By the time I realized it, I had already walked a couple of blocks back to my car, but it did make me wonder if pandan flavoring was forgotten. Another great addition to SGV! Malaya has a small parking lot or there are lots of street parking. You order outside through the window. There is no interior seating but they do have a nice shaded outdoor seating with an amazing R&B playlist. To my surprise, there are electrical outlets all around to charge your devices. I ordered their strawberry matcha and added the cream top for 75 cents. The total for this drink was around $9. This is probably one of the most enjoyable strawberry matchas I ever had. They use real strawberry puree and it's not artificial tasting at all. From my opinion, I wouldn't get the cream top next time since it's hard to mix it with the plastic straw as it bends. The lid isn't the one where you can sip from. The matcha is whisked well, no clumps. The drink is also creamy. It did take awhile for them to prepare but staff were friendly, kind and apologized for the wait. So do expect to wait at least 10 min for your order. read more

Great spot! Repurposed drive-in selling specialty drinks and snacks. The folks here are warm and welcoming, and I really enjoyed the shaded seating area. I ordered a decaf ube cream latte and churros. My friend had a matcha and guava ensaymada (guava was Arcadia exclusive). Unfortunately, they were out of churros, but I was offered a free melona bar, and happily accepted. I will note that most of the seating area was made up of backless stools, but we were able to snag 2/4 chairs with back support. I love me a supported back! Ohhh my goodness... This place single-handedly started my coffee addiction because their ube coffee is sooo good. I've been coming here since their Soft Opening in April, and I can't say enough how friendly the staff is and how consistent the quality of the drinks and the food are here. My personal favorites are the ube coffee, pandan matcha, and spam sando. There's a tv that they now use for watch parties, and food is now served at 9 am!! I usually stop here before work and can now get food before my shift which is awesome :) Also, I'm Filipino and have always wanted to try their original Silverlake location. I had a hankering for a sweet treat and Malaya was an AMAZING place to get one! When we arrived we realized the previous restaurant in the location that sold amazing katsu was gone, but Malaya is a fantastic replacement. We got the Malaya Signature and the Ube Creme. They were so pretty when they came out and were super delicious, not too sweet! I actually enjoyed the Malaya Signature even more than the Ube - but both were good. For snacks, we got the Lumpia and the salted egg Ensaymadas. The lumpia were crispy and delicious - pork based I believe. The ensaymada was like nothing we'd had before - salty, sweet, savory. A great flavor combo. My partner didn't love it but I found it delightful. The service was extremely friendly, but it took a bit to come out. I think they made everything fresh. The drinks were quick tho! I continue to love that location. The open air with the sonic parking lot vibe is really nice, especially on a hot but breezy day. I got their Spam Breakfast Sando ($13) and a matcha latte with oat milk ($8) I got the matcha latte half sweet and asked if they had simple syrup but they only had agave, brown sugar, and one other option I can't recall. I asked if they normally will have simple syrup but didn't get a straightforward answer so I'm not sure. The matcha latte was okay but not worth the price. It's premade in a squeeze bottle and has a bad aftertaste. The spam breakfast sando was okay. It was a little plain overall, I wish it was seasoned a bit more and on top of that, at $13 it was pricy. They don't have a bathroom which is a bummer especially since they serve food and drinks. We ended up having to leave because of that. The stools for the counter seating are too short to be comfortable for the height of the counter. The trash was also overflowing and stacking up with nowhere for us to put our trash before we left. First time at Malaya and I love the very outdoor concept! Order at the counter and there's a covered outdoor space to chill, even with outlets around if you want to work there. The staff were very friendly and the mural by the counter is beautiful. For APIHM, they were running some specials in May that I tried: + Adobo Bowl - A pretty simple dish where the price seemed a little steep. The meat was seasoned well, sauce was thick and sweet, but the overall bowl ratio with overwhelmed with white rice. I think it was missing like pickled veggies or something too to complete the dish. + Pandan Matcha - a sweet drink where the pandan flavor shined through more than the matcha. Other menu items we tried: + Lumpia crispy sando: Solid sando, but needs to be eaten right away. The fried wonton sheets that lumpia is made with in hindsight would give a good crunch but I think one sheet is not enough in comparison to the whole sandwich. Maybe test multiple layers (or a thicker wonton sheet). I also think it needs a dipping sauce. + Ensaymada - queso: Favorite thing I tried! The Ensaymada was soft and pillowy and the mixture of cheese gave it was really nice sweet and savory combo. Would love to come back for this! read more

Stopped in this morning to grab some coffees while they have their soft opening! It's an outdoor ordering window with a cute patio area next to it. They also have their own little parking lot. We got the Ube Creme Latte and the Caramel Banana Latte. Both drinks were delicious and the flavors were well balanced. The only thing I'd note is that I wish they used 'sippy cup' lids instead of straw lids for the cream top drinks so I don't have to take off the whole lid to sip on it. #188 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. Malaya is a little walk-up filipino coffeeshop that recently opened in Arcadia. The outdoor café is set up as a concession window with a service counter and a protective awning overhead; there's also a covered patio to the side with some chairs, stools, and wooden countertops attached to the brick wall enclosure, and they even installed some outlets and purse hooks along the enclosure. I actually really like the laid-back setup - it's a fun place to relax in good weather. I ordered the signature Malaya latte. The drink itself was pretty small - definitely smaller than the standard sizes typically used at other coffeshops. That being said, the latte sounded interesting enough, like a Spanish latte but with brown sugar added. Overall, the drink was decent. It didn't amaze me or leave me with an unforgettable impression, but I liked it enough to finish it and it got the job done in satisfying my caffeine addiction. Honestly I regret not trying one of the more prominently filipino drinks like their ube or pandan lattes, which look pretty great in all the photos. There's always next time though. Service was superb. The owner (or supervisor maybe) was welcoming as he took my order, and I appreciated his cheerful and friendly disposition. Stopped by during their opening weekend to check out this new coffee spot. This location has had several businesses come and go in the past few years, so hoping this one sticks. Definitely a more unique business in the area as we don't have too many, if any, Filipino inspired restaurants. Malaya has a storefront in Silverlake already, but seems like they are heading over to the SGV. This place is more of a grab and go, outdoor eatery spot. Order at the window and either sit outdoors under the awning or take it with you to-go. Parking is pretty easy as there's a small lot and ample street parking. Ordered 3 drinks: Malaya signature $7.50, caramel banana $7.50, and a matcha latte with a cream top $7.50 + $1. Out of the three, I liked only one. The Malaya signature was the best tasting to me. Espresso was strong and flavorful, but I liked the added hints of cinnamon and brown sugar to really elevate the drink. The cream top was pretty minimal though. The caramel banana - I think I'm just not a banana fan for my drinks. The espresso was good but the banana syrup kind of killed it for me. But this was just a flavor preference. The matcha latte though - I was told they don't do any sweeteners to the matcha, but the cream top would give it some sweetness. But I did see some other people say they were able to adjust for sugar, but I wasn't given that option. So the matcha was really strong but tasted like grass. Cream top could have been thicker, too. Drinks are not badly priced, but the cups are pretty small, so even less ice - I felt like the cups had a lot of ice inside. They also offer pastries and food but I think the pasties are not from another vendor. I got the cheese ensaymada for $6.50. They heated it up so the cheese was nicely melted when I started eating. A must try in the area for a unique Filipino cafe concept. I appreciate that this spot is a change from the typical Chinese spots. The food is solid and so are the drinks... what more do you need? The chicken rice bowl is very flavorful and portions are good. I love the mini lumpia in my rice bowl too. And their matcha is the good kind too, so don't be skeptical of the fusion take.
