Its a good size restaurant with big menu; plenty of options to pick and choose. Service was good; waited a while to get seated but we notice it was only one person working in the front and she was helping a table so we think nothing of it. The menu/pictures looks good. What we got: Shrimp fritter (2.5/5) This wasn't it for us; not sure if it was the batter; but after we ate one; it felt oily? And it just stuck in our mouth. I would get a different appetizer next time. Nasi Goreng (1/5) Sorry; this was not what we expected either. Maybe im just used to flavorfull Nasi Goreng. It was bland and it was more of like a rice pillaf that barely touch the wok. I really hope this was just a one of those day and it usually good. It looks really good when it arrives and we were so excited; but when we started eating it; we were very surprise. Panang char kway thew (3.5/5) This one was decent; plenty of flavor. We like it. Belachan shrimp and sring bean (4/5) Best one from all the ones we ordered. Plenty of flavor. We use some of the sauce to mix in to nasi goreng. Teh Tarik (4/5) Good teh tarik. Really enjoy it. I went on my own and only had room for one dish. Ordered the Penang Char Kuay Teow. It was tasty. It has some wok hei flavor. The shrimp was not big but the flavor of the noodles was good. overall it was satisfactory and met my expectation of a char kuay teow outside of Malaysia. There aren't many Malaysian restaurants in the Seattle area, and I believe this is the only one on the Eastside. Three of us came in for an early dinner around 4:30p and only a couple tables were occupied, so we were seated in an area with no other parties next to us. Their menu is pretty extensive! Whether you're looking for a meat dish, seafood, noodles, rice, curry or something vegetarian, they have got you covered. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs! We ordered four dishes to share and had leftovers of each one. That said, the serving sizes of each item were very reasonable for the prices and certainly filled us up. + BELACHAN KANG KUNG: For our vegetable dish, we tried this bowl of water spinach cooked with garlic and shrimp paste. The water spinach itself was fresh and I enjoyed the firmness of the stems. Sadly, I found the shrimp paste to be overpowering and just too much for my taste. These would have been perfect just cooked in garlic, which I actually couldn't taste at all. + PENANG CHOW KUEH TEOW: I could eat these noodles all night! The wide rice noodles were perfectly coated in the savory sauce and had that true wok hei taste. I found several small shrimp, but only two pieces of squid, so I wouldn't call this a very good value, but it was really delicious! Bean sprouts and Chinese chives added nice bites of crunch. + CURRY BEEF BRISKET IN CLAY POT: Chunks of braised beef and potatoes came swimming in a rich curry sauce. The sauce had a smooth consistency with a nice balance between coconut milk and warm spices. The beef was super tender and succulent, but I didn't like how they included the thick fatty membrane on the meat. I personally cut it off, since it had an off-putting rubbery texture. Overall, this is a solid dish though! + BLACK PEPPER CHICKEN: Lean and tender pieces of white meat chicken were tossed with slices of white onion in a light black pepper sauce. The sauce had a mild spice and I could taste a splash of fish sauce which added some extra flavor. The onions still had a good crisp to them. With the exception of the Black Pepper Chicken, everything we ordered had a little thumbs up icon on the menu, indicating that they were recommended dishes. Quite a few thumbs were sprinkled throughout the menu which helped us narrow down what to order, otherwise, we probably would have been deliberating for a while. Two employees managed the entire dining room and did a good job tending to both tables and multiple takeout orders. With this being the only Malaysian restaurant on the Eastside, it's definitely worth a visit and I look forward to coming back to try their Laksa! read more

First time with my group of girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. There were 6 of us and one of them visited Malaysia and wanted to introduce this restaurant. Our server was able to explain the different dishes service was great. We waited for our check for a while. So, I wonder if we need to ask for it like different cultures. The Bak Kut Teh came luke warm with no chili side. It is meant to be served hot! The char kuey teow was bland. The roti canai was oil galore and the curry that came with it had a ton of sugar. Wanted to try this place for quite sometime and finally had the chance to try it. Interior looks great, however, as many reviews mentioned, everything else felt short. Customer service: Once you were seated, everything is literally there. Plates, menu, empty cups and water. No greetings or the usual customer service you'd expect (no big deal). They literally never came by our table, and we tried to flag down a staff to even just put in our order for a good 20+ minutes. When they serve, they just put it on your table almost like slamming it on the table and leave. Not checking if you need anything else or whatever, like they are trying to get as far away from you as quick as possible. Taste: If you are looking for authentic or somewhat close to it, this is not it. The roti telur tasted like a burrito. Roti telur, bread with egg, should be crispy flatbread with egg filling inside. But they added more cubes of bell peppers to the point as soon as they serve it, I could smell the raw peppers. The dipping curry sauce tasted like just curry powders and salt. No soul to it. Nasi Lemak is somewhat decent-ish, but the sambal is definitely whitewashed or localized. Very sweet candied sambal instead of the rich hot savory peppery sambal. But it's still nice and fragrant to eat with the rice. The chicken (add-on $7) was served hot, but there's no flavor or even blended marinade/spices on the skin. Ayam berempah, or spiced chicken, did not taste like spiced or even seasoned at all. It's very close to paper dry. Wanting to pay and get out? Another hide and seek trying to flag down the server... This restaurant is considered Malaysian but the menu says otherwise. They have plenty of Malaysian dishes, but they also have other items like tom yum soup, mapo tofu etc. I tried their nasi lemak with chicken and roti telur. Great portion for the chicken and alright for the roti. The sambal tastes sweet ketchupy than it should be. The service was not the greatest. My party of two got seated after a few mins in the corner where we seemed to have been forgotten. It took them a while to get our orders. Also, the main dish arrived before the appetizer. Was craving Malaysian food after a trip to Malaysia but sadly left a bit disappointed. I ordered a curry noodle dish (forgot the name and having trouble finding it on the menu), but it basically had noodles, potatoes, and chicken tossed in a curry sauce. It also came with a bowl of some kind of soup. Overall I thought the flavor was pretty good, though it would've been nice to include more chicken in the dish. We also had some satay to share amongst our table, which was pretty good as well (but again, larger portion would be appreciated). Service is where my visit really fell short - we were left waiting for our food for what seemed like 30+ minutes. Staff wasn't that friendly either and did not come to check on us at all. We first went to Malay Satay Hut way back when it was one location in Little Saigon decades ago. Loved it. Not big on atmosphere but definitely big on savory goodness. In between then I went to the Redmond location for lunch multiple times with friends and customers. Always enjoyable. The better half wanted something out of our normal routine and we hadn't been for a while and just realized there was a location in Bellevue. We ordered the Hainan chicken plate, roti with curry dip, tofu with vegetables curry and salted fish / chicken fried rice to go for enjoying at home. Yum. We had a chance to visit Kuala Lumpur years ago and loved the food there as it was this crazy good mashup of Chinese, Indian, Thai and other Asian styles. Was quite excited about the new location. We used to love this restaurant when we were kids but about 8 years ago, the dishes changed. Maybe the chef changes? We found it in a new location. Supposedly, it got moved to the new location 2 months ago. Waitress was super nice. Interior was nice. We ordered a few dishes. Green beans with shrimp was okay. Chose yellow noodle with curry Laksa. This dish was quite disappointing. Lack of flavor and ingredients. There are quite a few pieces of tofu. Two pieces of shrimp and some fish balls.. Got roti Canai.. Roti was good but very small amount of curry sauce. Not a good ratio. The best dish was probably the beef satay skewered. Satay sauce was good! Not sure if I will come back. Their new location by the Lake Hill Library in Lake Hills Village seems smaller than their old location in Overlake Center Shopping mall. This place is always busy! They don't take reservations so prepare to wait. We've been to their new location twice now (two Saturdays in a row...it was that good! LOL). What we've had so far: BBQ Pompano Fish - whole fish, fried, topped with this very delicious sauce! Flavorful! It had head, but not overpowering. Highly recommend! Vegetarian Fried Rice - pleasantly surprised that this dish was flavorful. Signature Duck Egg Char Kway Teow - we were expecting either whole duck eggs or sliced duck eggs (hard boiled). This is a noodle dish (flat noodles) with some vegetables and scrambled duck eggs. This dish was a bit one note for me. It was good, but nothing to rave about. Oyster Omelet - definitely can see and taste the oysters. It was good and flavorful but I can only eat so much of it. Kang Kung Belachan - stir fried water spinach with shrimp paste. Tasty! Curry Laksa with yellow noodle - Rich coconut curry noodle soup with fish balls, fried tofu, shrimp, bean sprouts and hard boiled egg. Good dish, but I've had better curry laksa elsewhere. Winter Melon Longan Juice - it was good but too sweet for me. Durian Smoothie - I liked this smoothie better than the Winter Melon Longan Juice because it wasn't as sweet. But if you haven't had durian before, durian has an off-putting smell. The durian scent is not as strong in the smoothie though. Staff are friendly. I've been looking for a restaurant that has Authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice. This is the spot, the best part is the garlic/ginger salted oil that I get to dip the chicken into. So yummy. AVOID THIS PLACE, FOOD SAFTY CONCERN!! I visited this restaurant around 7:20 pm yesterday and ordered bak kut teh, which didn't come with rice, so I added a side of rice. When the food arrived in a wooden tray, I noticed an odd smell. At first, I thought it might be coming from the box itself. But after taking my first bite of rice, I realized the rice was spoiled. When I brought this to the staff's attention, the lady immediately said, "I'll bring you another one," without any apology whatsoever. What made me even more upset was how quickly they brought out a new bowl of rice--and it wasn't even that hot. If the restaurant uses a rice cooker as they usually do, this clearly indicated that the rice had been cooked several hours earlier. Since it was already past 7 PM, the dinner rush would have been over. Why would a restaurant still serve spoiled rice--which usually takes more than a day to turn sour--when they already have a fresh batch ready? It makes me wonder: Did they already know the rice had gone bad, cooked a new batch, but still decided to serve the old rice to some customers to avoid wasting it? To make matters worse, I later found out that someone else who ate chicken here ended up with an upset stomach. The hygiene and food safety standards of this restaurant are truly concerning to me. I was surprised that this place was delicious. We ordered oyster pancake, kang kong, hainanese chicken, salted egg golden fried prawn, laksa, roti, salt and pepper pork chop, and pork intestines. The salted egg fried shrimp/prawn was very delicious. Super crispy! The roti was also great. The hainanese chicken was also good. They have a parking lot so it will be easy to park here. The new location has HORRIBLE SERVICE, not welcoming of large parties with children. The food is also mediocre now. Which is unfortunate as I've been a fan since their International District days 25 years ago, and a regular patron of their Bellevue Overlake location. Maybe they have had an ownership change as well. We were a group of 4 families with children, 6 - 12 years old. We walked in 1 min late, were greeted 3 mins later. But the main person barked at us for being late. Then while were being seated, she told us our children were loud. The kids were excited to see each other but they were no louder than any normal children their age. They were definitely not shouting, chaotic or running around. So, we were baffled at what the problem was. They didn't give us enough menus (for the adults) and immediately started asking for what we're going to order. They were out of a lot of the dishes that we wanted to order, which wouldn't be an issue except for how they behaved with us when we were ordering. A little bit later, they again came and shushed the kids themselves! We go to restaurants together regularly and it has never been an issue, so that was completely uncalled for! They also didn't give us enough silverware and never filled up our water. I had to go get a water pitcher from another empty table. The bill included the service charge, which explains why they felt they can get away with such bad behavior. But we're lost at why they behaved like that with us. We will never be back and never recommend them to others. read more

I wanted to love this place, I was super excited to have a local Malaysian restaurant. But 4 dishes and $74 later, I have to be honest. We ordered the vegetarian fried rice, Singapore noodles, vegetarian curry tofu pot, and chicken satay. The best dish of all of these, was the Singapore noodles. Chicken satay, well one of my chicken skewers was pink , so that was a damper. The other skewers were just okay in flavor and the peanut sauce that came with it was flavorless. The vegetarian curry, was again just okay, very thin curry. The vegetarian fried rice, bland , it tasted like regular white rice. I hate that this is a not stellar review but again , I'm doing my best to give honest feedback. Would I repeat my order, sadly no. Maybe my expectations were too high since I have been to Singapore and I have had these same dishes there, that very well could be. The restaurant inside is quite large and the staff are friendly. As a born and raised Malaysian, I would recommend this place and reunion cafe over Kedai Makan any day. Like most restaurants, there are some dishes that shine and taste like home, and there's some I wouldn't recommend because of the ingredients we simply don't have here (like the prawn mee noodles, which is a Penang specialty and has too much belacan/shrimp paste here). I'd also recommend getting Malaysian dishes, vs typical dishes you can get from most Asian restaurants because it's probably going to be better elsewhere. -- hainan chicken rice -- Nasi lemak -- Cantonese style chowfun (you can also tell the staff to make it yingyong with half vermicelli noodles and half chowfun -- char kuey teow -- roti canai --rendangs -- curry laksa -- their curry dishes -- hokkien mee -- Buddhist yam pot I've never tried their typical Asian restaurant dishes like Singapore noodles (but I would not recommend as Singapore noodles, as it actually does not exist in Malaysia and Singapore, I believe it originated from hongkong). Basically, order the unfamiliar dishes (actual Malaysian dishes) and you'll be happily surprised. If you order more typical dishes that you see in Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese restaurants it might not live up to expectations, because it's not their specialty (it's probably on the menu to cater to more diners) and it's not Malaysian. read more

What you see in the menu doesn't quite match what you end up getting. It's like the pictures in the menu were enlarged. I am not sure if my experience is due in part due to the food I ordered... I ordered beef rendang which I've heard is supposed to be good. My family member ordered Hainanese chicken. Is beef rendang supposed to be room temperature because it wasn't hot when it was served? Honestly, it also didn't loo too appetizing although I must admit it did look just like the picture in menu. I didn't care much for either entrees. Both entrees had a sort of "fishy" aftertaste I didn't like. The poached chicken just looked really... bland and pale. I guess that's what poached chicken is supposed to look like but the texture of the chicken was a turn off. I was rubbery. Nonetheless, I guess I don't like Hainanese chicken. I thought I liked Malaysian food since I really liked the old Kedai Makan restaurant on Capitol Hill (now somewhere else with new owners) but this food definitely wasn't that. We ordered the Hainanese chicken and the Malaysian style pad thai, and it fell short for me. I was slightly disappointed as it wasn't as flavorful as I remember it used to be. It's almost as if something is missing. While the server was really kind for letting us know that there was a price increase on the chicken dish ahead of ordering but one of my pet peeves is when bringing out the dish, the fingers are touching the food aka the pad thai. I was so impressed with the one and only server they had. She seamlessly attended to all our needs. We shared the Thai Spice Pompano Fish with an a la cart order of white rice, and Roti Canai. The fish was savory with a lovely sauce. The fish was flaky, tender and and the taste was a good counterpoint to the sauce. I wanted something light for lunch, so I ordered the mango tofu salad, and we got roti for the table. The mango in the salad was delicious and ripe. The sauce tasted like a typical chili sauce from the bottle, but nonetheless was great. Service was pretty fast, and our waitress was friendly. Others at the table tried noodle-based dishes, from the Malaysian pad Thai to various soups. It's impressive that with such a huge menu, everything comes out fresh and quickly. I wouldn't recommend this place. Went there for lunch because I was craving Hainanese chicken rice and Laksa. There were only 4 tables including us and when we were ready to order, all 3 of the waitresses were standing behind the counter chit chatting and we had to really wave them down to get their attention. During our order, we wanted some roti and the waitress said we'll have to charge you $1 more because it has eggs and you know how expensive eggs are these days. Really? The cost of each menu items can just go up on a whim? Ok, fine a dollar more. With only 4 tables, it took a long time for our order to come out and the table who ordered after us got theirs order first, we almost wanted to walk out. The Hainanese chicken is pretty much just cold chopped chicken with rice and soup on the side and that was one of the last dishes to come out. The Laksa noodle soup was pretty good and flavorful but my Hainanese chicken rice was very disappointing. For $20, the chicken was all emaciated, pretty much just skin and bones.
