New to Dallas and a friend recommended this Thai restaurant. So it seems fit that I recommend it as well. Ambiance is very sleek and "thai-ish". (Yes, I like to make up words) They also have seating outside with fireplace action, for those chilli days you want to enjoy a nice bowl of curry. Cool thing about this restaurant is they make everything fresh daily. If you head towards the back of the restaurant you will see them making noodles from scratch. The service was amazing. I had the pleasure to be taken care of by Lisa. She was very knowledgeable of the dishes and shared her recommendations. She also shared the special dishes available that were not on the menu. I definitely had to take advantage of the scallops. They were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Another appetizer I went for was the shrimp dip. Hands down a must have. Came here for brunch after long wait times at a nearby thai spot and had a great time! We were seated immediately and our server was nice. The coffee wasn't too sweet and the Hoi An Hash was warm and comforting. After trying brunch here, I think I prefer the dinner menu. Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of Thai food. Growing up, my hometown didn't have a Thai restaurant; thus, I was ignorant (like I am in general) of dishes from that part of the world. Matter of fact, my exposure to Thai food didn't come until I started dating Lisa, a girlfriend of long ago. Lisa was crazy about Thai food and insisted that we go at least once a week. That continued for nearly a year until one fateful night when she dumped me over a bowl of Tom Yum soup, announcing that she was leaving me for a guy named Tony who designed metaphysical jewelry. A few weeks back, my better half mentioned that she'd made reservations at Malai Kitchen, a newer Thai joint located in Preston Center. Even though we had been to Thai restaurants a number of times over the years, shivers ran up my spine thinking back of my inglorious dismissal by Lisa in a Thai eatery all those years ago. Malai Kitchen didn't look like the many hole-in-the-wall Thai restaurants I'd been to over the years. The ambience was sleek and upscale. Malai even offers house-brewed beers if you're so inclined. And service? It was prompt, efficient, and friendly from the moment we walked in. An added bonus was the minimal noise level. We started with the Malai favorites sampler, consisting of Vietnamese Meatballs, Imperial rolls, Chicken Satay, and Ahi Tuna Spring Rolls. For me, the sampler plate was the hit of the night. I definitely give it big thumbs up. But don't ask me why...for some strange reason, I ordered the Chicken Pad Thai for my main course. I've never had a fancy for Pad Thai, so I obviously had a momentary lapse of reason. And as such, I'm not the best person to review it. But let's say that I semi-enjoyed my Pad Thai. The night at Malai Kitchen ended well. It was a pleasant night in good surroundings. My better half enjoyed her dish and was happy. First off, service was amazing here. Everyone was so nice and answered all my questions for my first visit. They did a good job of mentioning the happy hour which did get me to get more than I was planning. This is a sign of good employees pushing food without being pushy. The coconut milk chicken soup broth was hearty and delicious. My only complaint would be the shredded chicken in it was dry and unseasoned. We have actually been to several of their locations and all of them have been delicious. This is kind of a pattern with us, but we usually end up eating so many of the appetizers that we don't eat any of the actual main courses. I have never had anything there that wasn't absolutely fabulous. If you get the Vietnamese, meatball appetizer, ask them to show you how to put it together, because it is a totally different dish with the various sauces and spices. The quality and service there has been great throughout the years, but whenever restaurants expand, the secondary locations tend to not be as good. But we were so happy with our dinner here on Monday night! We ordered two appetizers - the shishito peppers (be careful, we got a few spicy ones!) and meatball, red curry to share for dinner, and the mango sticky rice smash. Everything was as good as the original location. It's been a while since I've had the mango sticky rice, it was so delicious and so well presented, I could eat it everyday! Second time visiting this restaurant except different location. I loved the vibe this restaurant had and it was very spacious so a big plus during COVID! I went with a group of four friends and ordered chicken Pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, stir-fried glass noodles (Pad Woo Sen) and yellow curry bowl with chicken (Gang Garee). I personally liked most of what we ordered except yellow curry bowl with chicken had too strong of coconut flavor and I am not a big fan of coconut. It was good but if you are not a coconut person, you'd want to avoid ordering this! We ordered all of our order to be spicy but except for the chicken Pad Thai, other entrees didn't have much of spiciness. At first, we thought the portion of each entree seemed too little, but don't let it trick you. We were FULL by the time we finished eating. One disappointment was that I specifically asked for peanuts/cashew nuts to be placed on the side instead of mixed in, but our chicken Pad Thai came out with crushed peanuts sprinkled on top... Also, the stir-fried glass noodle also had whole peanuts mixed in... I really don't like having peanuts/cashew nuts in my food so this honestly was a huge disappointment, more because I specifically pointed it out when first placing the order. Thai taco is a must try. The sampler itself filled with unique and fun tasting dish. Everything on that plate were devoured in minutes by us four. Couple of us opted for drunken noodle. It was great. Perfectly made. Enough spices and perfect composition of the vegetables, beef and noodle, you'll get some with every bite. Pork ribs was fall off the bones tender and great seasoning and flavorful. I was a bit skeptical that it would be a up-scale asian restaurant with no true asian flavors, but to my suprise, I was wrong. We ordered their shrimp and avocado salad and appetizer sampler. I could taste the smoke from the grilled shrimp but we did ask for the coconut dressing in the side, which i'm glad i did, might even try the ginger dressing in place of it. The inside of the restaurant feels very majestic just comforting. There's a lot of room yet it feels very intimate in your own seating. I have never had scallop pad thai before nor seen it as an offering anywhere and this combination was amazing. If you like pad thai and scallops you MUST order this.
