I was very excited to try this Malaysian place. They actually do a Thai fusion with it, but it's really leans more to Malaysian flavors. Their tea is amazing. You can tell they brew it and it doesn't come from a syrup. When I sat down, I was instantly greeted, and there were like four different people serving my table, I think that they all work as a team to make sure everything is covered. The service was just amazing. Restaurant is beautiful, the booths were , small and intimate and you feeling that you in place with privacy and yet part of the group ....kind of interesting how they've done that. But the food! The food was outstanding, first they gave me a complementary appetizer of Jasmine sticky rice with this eggplant chutney, that was very tasty, a teeny bit spicy, but really good depth with flavor. Then my beef Samosas arrived. There were four, wrapped in like a triangle rapper, smaller than the Indian version of the same, and the flavor was very tasty, and corn and small chopped potatoes, yum! The two chutneys that came with it one was a cool cucumber, and the other was this sweet and spicy plum sauce. They made samosas!!! They could be soft and cool, or they could be delicious and spicy, depending on chutney you had them with and you had a third option.... There was a bed of pickled radish and carrot that really sit off the samosas as well and we're just delicious on their own. I devoured the entire thing. Then get the entrée. I had drunken noodles and I added the shredded pork... It was devastatingly tasty!!! the noodles were obviously done it a wok that's been seasoned to perfection. The wide noodles picked up all that deliciousness from the wok and then combined with the pork... heaven ! They had large pieces of bell pepper and tomatoes. very fresh onions... Just deliciousness. I really want to give the food a 5/5, but if I'm comparing it to a lot of the Thai places I've been to in Houston, I have to fairly rate them 4/5. There's just been truly so many outstanding experiences I've had in Houston. Regardless, the food was very good and it was authentic, we did get dishes similar to what we got at Street to Kitchen in Houston, which is the most authentic Thai we've had. Food: I forgot to take pictures of two other dishes we ordered, the Thai chicken, wings, and the drunken noodles. But let me start with the complementary sticky rice. I've actually never had a complementary "starter" at a Thai restaurant, so they stood out, and it was a good meal prepper. The dip is an eggplant type of dip so it's not peanut sauce based. It was really good. The best dish was the crab dip with the shrimp chips, the dip was curried and balanced well with the crab. The chicken wings weren't as crispy as we're used to, and there were more on the saucy side, but it was a solid 4/5 dish. The drunken noodles were good and I feel like they had a great mix of veggies, beef, and noodles in the dish, so it wasn't so carb heavy. But we've definitely had better flavor drunken noodles before. Lastly, the mango sticky rice presentation was unlike anything I've seen before, and I loved it. Do I prefer the traditional sliced mango over a bit of rice? Perhaps. But I did enjoy tasting the mango and the condensed milk and a sticky rice together inside the coconut for a change. Service: we went during dinnertime on a Saturday night, and I was so impressed with the level of service we had. Because don't get me wrong, they were busy, but the food came out so fast & we had multiple servers filling up our water and ensuring we're doing okay. We were literally out of there in about an hour, but it wasn't because they were pushing us out, it was truly because everything was so quick. And I loved that strategy they used where we didn't have just one server assigned to us, which is probably why they are thriving here in Dallas. Bangkok Street Rice / Pad Grapao ($20.70): The egg was good and the portion was decent but the meat was dry. The flavors weren't bad though. Drunken Noodles / Pad Kee Mao ($24.15): Super oily and overpriced. To make matters worse they forgot the beef tenderloin which is part of the dish. We had added shrimp as a protein add on without substituting anything so we should have received both but only got the shrimp which was good. We came to this uptown location after stopping by a local shop and were seated right away. The staff here were all super friendly and welcoming - we loved the ambiance and the design of the place! They brought out a sort of weird free table appetizer first -- a sticky rice bite wrapped in a banana leaf with some sort of dark eggplant sauce - I honestly was confused why they would serve this odd, bitter amuse bouche. It was not good. Anyway, i washed it away with my water and was glad the dinner that I ordered was better! Then we learned the server didnt know which menu items to recommend because they dont let the servers try the dishes! That was shocking. My coworker asked about the pineapple fried rice and the server said he hadn't been given the opportunity to try it.. and only knew it was "sort of sweet" - YIKES. I want my server to know their menu inside and out! So this restaurant has some work to so -- my shrimp spring rolls fell apart and the dipping sauce dishes were too small to fit the rolls I tried to dip in them - dishware needs to be rethought! The Burmese tea salad was good - loved seeing this on the menu! Parking in this area was a challenge - we were lucky to find a spot not too far away on a random weeknight. Can't imagine what it looks like here on a weekend! I'm already excited to try this place again. Everything we tried was wonderful. We started with a complimentary sticky rice and ordered the favorites sampler. The sampler gave us a chance to try four different items and came paired with four sauces. The meatball was probably the table majority favorite. I popped in here recently to get out of the rain and was delighted with the ambiance. Everything was decorated in warm orange candlelit tones. This is a Thai restaurant, but they have a FULL menu of Tiki drinks which look outstanding. I wasn't in the mood for something boozy, so I tried an iced coffee. The bartender is a genuine pro... he mixed up a coconut inspired coffee drink for me on the fly, complete with fancy garnish. You can tell they use fresh pineapple versus canned pineapples. The drunken noodles were absolutely amazing, it will probably be the thing I get next time I'm there. A friend of mine got the Seabass noodle dish, but didn't love it. They offered to give her drunken noodles to take home and didn't charge us for the Seabass, which was kind. Malai Kitchen was such a great weeknight find. We walked over to West Village after a stroll on the Katy Trail. ATMOSPHERE: Warm, modern, and inviting without feeling pretentious. The space has a lively energy but still feels comfortable for conversation. It is perfect for a casual date night or dinner with friends after work. FOOD: The highlight for us was the appetizer sampler, which was an excellent value compared to ordering individual apps. It gave us a chance to try a variety of flavors and textures, and everything felt thoughtfully prepared and well-balanced, coming with two of each of their most popular apps for $18. SERVICE: Friendly and knowledgeable, though a bit slow at times. Nothing that detracted too much from the experience, but it is worth knowing if you are in a rush. PARKING: Surprisingly easy for Uptown. There is a large free garage nearby, which makes the whole experience much less stressful. Overall, Malai Kitchen is a solid choice for a relaxed weeknight dinner with great food and a convenient location. Extremely Concerning Experience -- Please Be Careful I've been a regular customer at this Thai restaurant and usually love their food, so today's experience was extremely disturbing. I ordered my usual shrimp Pad Thai and shrimp spring rolls. I immediately noticed that the food tasted very different--and not good. I told my waitress, Mercedes, several times. She checked with the chef and came back saying the issue was the lemongrass. I packed the remaining food to take home. There was also a strange issue with my bill: the items were listed as $13 + $17, yet the total was $31. When I questioned it, the manager simply told me that was how it rang up. About five minutes after leaving, I had an urgent gastrointestinal reaction and had to make an emergency bathroom stop. I became convinced that something was wrong with the food. I contacted the restaurant and spoke with Manager Michelle. She took all of my information and said she would get back to me. She never did. I called again today and left a message with another manager asking Michelle to contact me. Again, no response. Then things became even more alarming. When I went to dispose of the leftovers, I discovered what appeared to be bugs/insects in the food. At this point, I am extremely concerned about food handling and sanitation. I strongly urge the restaurant to investigate this immediately. Please be very careful about eating here until this matter is properly addressed. I've eaten at ALOT of Thai restaurants around the world. Chicken with red curry is pretty much the same (give or take the spice intensity). I'm not sure why it was so complicated at Malai Kitchen but I did ask if coconut milk was in it. I did want the typical dish that does have coconut milk in it. They reassured me that it would have it in it. The dish came out and the sauce tasted almost like yellow curry with a tang to it. It was not the same. I'm not sure why it tasted this way and I'm not one to send food back (I really dont like sending food back!!) However, I couldn't eat it. It was inedible. It did not taste like it had any coconut. Service was outstanding from the get go. They have a full service bar with good options of beer, wine, sake, spirits and cocktails. Enjoyed the house IPA and will recommend it. We just had the most fantastic meal here after going to a play at Kalita Humphries. On Sundays the Happy Hour is all day and it is outstanding! We ordered 4 appetizers from the HH menu (2 for $12) - imperial rolls, chicken satay, wings and Vietnamese meatballs. The satay is average but the other 3 I would order every time, especially the meatballs. We also split the arctic cod w red curry. That dish is so big that even splitting it between the 2 of us we still brought some home. We had a little bit of room for dessert and had to order the mango sticky rice smash and the coconut cream pie. The sticky rice comes in a coconut shell and is warm and constructed perfectly. But the pie was a revelation - they do an amazing job with their version, from the pandan caramel sauce, to the mango slices and the scoop of coconut gelato on top. Yum! The best part of the meal was the top notch service. Our waiter, Tim, is also the bartender and he was so accommodating and friendly. He offered several tastes of different beers - I ended up going with their special 'Octoberfest' lager that had some nice citrus notes. He also recommended the jalapeño basil margarita and split an order of the Vietnamese coffee martini (a great take on an espresso martini) to go with our dessert. I was conflicted about how to rate this place because the dishes are hit or miss. They can be really good, or really bad. You have to either get lucky or know what's good. Thankfully, I checked Yelp for opinions, so most of what I got was great. But if I didn't, I might have had a completely different experience. My party of 6 came in at around 1pm on a Monday and it was busier than I was expecting, but service was good throughout the meal. I liked the ambiance of the restaurant, especially with the bar in the middle. It felt nice and cozy inside, but there was additional seating outside too. YELLOW CURRY BOWL W/ CHICKEN: Good and flavorful! Only complaint is that they didn't give enough rice. Not sure if asking for more costs extra or not. CRAB DIP: My favorite dish I tried! I only got this because people recommended it so highly, and, boy, am I glad I listened! So good and flavorful! I'd come back again just for this! SEARED AHI TUNA SPRING ROLLS: Good, light, and fresh! But not a lot of tuna. Lots of pickled veggie flavor though, so you have to like that kind of thing to like this. CRISPY ROTI: Great texture and flavor! Kind of like a croissant texture. Highly recommend if you haven't tried it before! SPICY CRISPY BEEF SAMOSAS: This was only alright because the beef was dry. The flavors were good though. VIETNAMESE NOODLE SOUP (PHO): I can't remember if it was the chicken or beef pho that my friend got, but it was bad. My guess is that it was the beef because she was craving traditional pho. I saw enough reviews mentioning this and warned her not to get it, but she wanted to try it. She regretted it. It was really bland. She had to put a ton of sriracha in. I think it might've been a house-made sriracha, which she actually really liked. But it couldn't save the pho. They claim to use house-made noodles, which are wider and much softer than standard pho noodles. We really didn't like it. Don't get the pho. Went in on a Saturday evening and we're seated right away. Within minutes we had a server ask for drinks and bring water. We were given great drink recommendations by Mario! It seemed pretty busy but we got our food timely and all the servers assisted with haste. Never an empty water or used dish on the table more than a minute or two. This is a super cute Thai/Vietnamese spot in uptown. I believe they have multiple locations. They do also have a cute outside patio. I came in today (Sunday) during brunch hours and was excited to try out the brunch menu. I love trying different and unique things, so i had to trie the Thai eggs Benedict. I also ordered a sugar cane juice. The Thai eggs Benedict starts with a Thai chili hollandaise- i couldn't even taste it. They need to double it. I asked for a side to take with my half that i couldn't finish- it was much better with the extra sauce. Then it had your standard poached eggs. The eggs were a bit under- the yolk poured out when cut open instead of oozing. I didn't love that but i prefer it to over cooked poached eggs. Next came spinach and shrimp on top of a coconut biscuit. It was very unique. I wouldn't say it was the best thing I've ever had but it was tasty and worth trying. I wish it had more depth of flavor like Thai and Vietnamese food have. Give me some chili garlic, scallion, ginger, lime flavor with it. The sugar cane juice was interesting to try. I didn't love it but I'm glad to have tried it. I hear fresh sugar cane juice is fantastic so i don't know if this isn't that fresh or i just don't have a taste for it. Both are possible. My dad ordered shrimp pad Thai. His friend had ordered it the night before and said it was amazing. It fell flat for him and he did not take his leftovers with him. He also said it could have more tang- would like more pickled or vinegar items and even some peanut sauce would be nice. The rice square appetizer served is interesting. After 16 years of dining here, I can still say it serves the BEST chicken Pad Thai in this part of the country. I have struggled to find any other place that compares with this dish. The flavors are bold, and the noodles are not overly soaked/soft like many others. You are able to taste all flavors in every bite without sauce consuming the plate. The chicken Vietnamese soup is incredibly warming and always makes my stomach feel better like chicken soup for the soul. If you like edamame, order it! It's also some of the best I've ever had due to the salty yet unique seasoning they add on top of it. Their complementary sticky rice is addicting.
