First time eating mala town and will be back. It's build your own hot pot. You pay by the weight. Pick your broth and the kitchen will cook it for you. There's a lot options. vegetables, noodles, dumplings and fish balls. Seafood. And just a few thin meat options. For the broth I got the beef bone. It was really good. Got spice level medium but I can do hot next time. Wasn't that spicy. There's also a sauce bar station. My friend got the tom yum broth and it was really good too.

Respectfully, I come to Malatang for the fish balls, and I know others come for the meat. Both were horrible. Noodles and veggies? Great variety and cooked to perfection. But the protein was abysmal. The fish balls with roe aren't fresh, they're the orange swirled ones that taste like egg yolk and have a rubbery outside. I know other malatang places either don't offer these at all, or specify that they're orange yolk roe. The shrimp balls and crab balls are mushy yet dense? Maybe you'd like it? But no it doesn't taste like imitation crab/fish cake like ANY OTHER malatang place offers. I've never had to do this before, I spit every single one of them out into their paper water cups. The meat was extremely over cooked and dry. My mom and I only tried the Angus beef slices. Mine was cooked better than hers, hers might as well been one notch from cooked ground beef, so it's inconsistent too. But, the rice cakes are also kept so frozen that they were still hard when in my soup. Someone needs to figure that out, other places do it, it can't be that hard of an ask. They have a 0.8lb limit (~$13.50). We both got the beef bone broth, my mom got mild and I got medium. Medium is definitely spicy enough and I was told that "Hot" just has a lot more oil. We took the broth to-go and made our own noodles with the soup to salvage our $. Employees we nice enough, 2/5 we interacted with spoke english, the rest spanish. The place was relatively empty during Sunday lunch.

I really like the concept of the place. It is simple, you have a choice, and they provide delicious savory soup. As you enter the establishment, it's obvious you have to make a little bit of decision what you want on your soup. So, grab a big bowl and a tong to get started. There are veggies, toppings, noodles, seafood, & meat sections. It's $16.99 per pound, so get only items you think you will eat, or it will add up. After you pick all your ingredients, they will weigh it for you, and they will ask you what soup you want. They will then give you a number, and basically, you can pretty much sit wherever you want. I enjoyed everything about this experience, and I can see why people rate it pretty well. I can picture us coming back real soon. While this review is not too detailed, I will give a more detailed update during my next visit. Stay tuned.

I like the wide, shallow hot pot bowls， they're spacious and make it easy to cook and scoop ingredients. The beef bone broth is rich and flavorful. However, the beef itself wasn't very tender. The sauce bar was also missing Thai chilies, which was disappointing since I prefer a spicier dipping sauce. Overall, the meal lacked the level of heat I was hoping for.

Food was really good, and the service was great! Didn't get the name of the cashier but he was super helpful

Went on a Saturday afternoon, been a fan of Malatown for a long time! This time around I wasn't too thrilled with the service. My order was served to someone else and a minute later was tried to be served to me. They claimed that it was brand new and even offered to remake it which was nice. But at this point, I have been waiting for so long that I've lost my appetite. While I try not to let one bad experience ruin my whole perception of a place, it was pretty disappointing how they handled it. Not one apology was said to the other person who was served my order or to me. Probably won't be back for a while at this location. I definitely urge you to try Malatown at their other locations! Malatown is still delicious overall and have been happy with all of them

Stopped by MalaTown in Pleasanton and built my perfect bowl - you grab everything you want (and they have everything) and pay by weight. Had to load up on my must-haves: fish balls with roe, enoki mushrooms, quail eggs, udon, veggies, and LOTS of beef belly + premium beef. Then finished it off with sesame paste, chili oil, and green onions from the sauce bar (they didnt have ponzu ) I went with the tom yum broth (spicy + sour = my fave), but my fiancé got the spicy dry pot with this peanut sauce and it was too flavorful with the perfect kick. Super clean space and really friendly staff, which always makes a difference.

Went here for a quick lunch during my work break, and it was delicious Mala Town is located in a cute plaza full of fun Asian cuisines, where is there is plenty of parking. The restaurant itself has a lot of seating available, and the employees are kind and polite. The ambiance is very chill, especially since I went for a Monday late lunch. There are numerous food options that are very yummy. There is an assortment of meats, veggies, noodles, and more! There is also a DIY sauce bar with a handful of sauces and toppings like cilantro and green onion. Personally, I like to load it up so that way I have enough for 2 meals. If you have enough for leftovers, they have containers available for take home. They also offer to-go which is awesome if you're on a time crunch. Overall, love going here for my malatang fix. It's so good!! :)

Food: It's $16.99 per pound. They have a good selection of meat, seafood, veggies, and noodles. The meat was tender and the veggies were fresh! I got the tom yum soup base. It wasn't too spicy, but very coconut heavy. Staff: They staff here is super friendly and attentive! I accidently dropped a beef ball and after picking it up, the lady staff member offered to help me throw it away and gave me more napkins!

after more than a year, i came here again and found out that this store improved a lot, mostly for the soup taste. seriously, tom yum soup is always the best!!! i think i miss the drink that i had previously. something like tea, sweet one??? and now no longer available ~ so sad though. lol... oh not to forget, the staff's name christian ~ he is great and always very energetic and full of smile. great service...

Food is delicious. Service is good. Ambiance good. Lots of selections. Love the meet. Fresh. Long line.

The staff is very accommodating for our party of 9 on a Saturday! We came at 5 PM and they helped set up the tables for us. Very clean and spacious setting with plenty of tables for big and small parties! The staff is attentive and checked in for more water and napkins. You pretty much get all the ingredients you want at the start and put it in a bowl (theres meats, veggies, noodles, and more!) They weigh it and it's priced based on that. Then you choose the broth and they cook all the ingredients in it. I got the mild signature beef broth which is a good standard soup to get! It was actually milky and had a good flavor with the veggies and meats I got. Since it's called Mala Town the mala flavor is def there. Def would come back!

Nina M.

LOVE Mala Town and the concept! YOU get to pick what you want and how much. You walk in, grab tongs and a bowl and go through a line of different food items that you can add to your bowl. Anything from greens (spinach, cabbage so forth), mushrooms, proteins, other vegetables, and noodles. Then you choose if you want it to be a soup or stir fry and they weigh your bowl and you pay. While you wait they have a sauce bar with an assortment of options to add. I appreciate the aesthetic of the bowls and how the whole location is decorated. Customer service is ok, but I come here for the food which I 100% recommend.

It's clean and the ingredients are fresh, so it's the most preferred Malatang restaurant in this town. It doesn't taste too stimulating, so I don't have a stomachache after eating it, and the soup is super delicious. Been waiting for Mala Town to open and it didn't disappoint! We waited about 20-30 min, but I think that was only because of their opening promotion of 50% off. They have a large selection of veggies and proteins to choose out of. I went with the bone broth mild and it was the right amount of spicy for me. Would definitely come back again! read more

We were excited to see another malatang restaurant open in the East Bay but unfortunately, it missed the mark and we won't be coming back. Some labels were missing from the toppings and some were empty. When we got to the sauce station, there were quite a few fruit flies flying around. Looking into the sesame oil pot, there were a number of them drowned in the bottom of the pot. The green onions were low and it was all soggy. Halfway through eating, we found a fruit fly in the bowl of soup. After that, we saw the worker clear dirty bowls from the dining tables, take the freshly cooked food bowls from the kitchen and work the cashier all with the same gloves. The only "cleaning" of the gloves was wiping it with a rag. I hate leaving negative reviews but all these red flags are highly unsanitary practices. We had high hopes for this place but we'll be sticking to our usual YGF and Zhangliang. read more

First time around the service was great and the food was yummy. The place is spacious and offers a lot at the sauce bar. Tried to go on a Friday night. Arrived at 9:05p and they close at 10p, no one else was in the line making their bowls and midway into making our bowls we were told it is only to go as they close at 9:30p. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up as it showed on Google and Yelp they close 10p. Would still come back at a different time, but definitely felt mislead with the closing times. read more

Decided to try this place after looking around when I was in the Sf area and it was on my way home. Loving all the toppings and meat options. Me and my sister got the Tomyum broth and it was so good, paired with the ramen noodle was perfect. The employees were helpful with explaining how things work and assigned us a table, but were able to accommodate us when we wanted a different table. Broth was flavorful compared to AYCE hot pot! I never sip on my soup at hot pot but found myself having a spoon of soup every other bite. I am subtracting a star because I feel like the meat could be of greater quality - Wagyu beef is advertised but wasn't at the bar. Their "marbled beef" was a bit chewy. But because the broth was yummy and the concept is convenient as well as the kind customer service, I would come here again! The restaurant is really big and we sat at a table for 14 pretty comfortably. We were also here on a Saturday night and the restaurant was full. The service is your typical Chinese restaurant vibe where you leave a little bit emotionally abused after paying for overly priced menu items. We did the à la cart and easily spent up to $1500. Better off with the family plan meal but nothing was of interest to us except one or two dishes. It took forever to come out and I mean FOREVER to a point where we almost cancelled a few dishes and called it a night, but they kept saying it's being made. With as many people and as massive as the restaurant was, and the price tags, I was expecting a more efficient service. A couple of times we saw our dish being brought to the wrong table and the people going "oh we didn't order this." With all of that out of the way, I am giving them an average score of 3 starts because the food did bring them back up. It was actually really good. My favorite of all things we ordered was their sea bass with string beans. The sea bass was fried crispy, garnished salty and still soft inside. It paired really well with the string beans. We ordered a bunch of other things that I couldn't tell you what the name was in English and they were above average taste wise. Their complimentary dessert however, was mass produced and tasted like they added too much water to it. This was the only one I was disappointed in. I still say this place is extremely overpriced but for a family meal experience and if you ever want to impress a date, why not.

Shredded chicken salad in most Vietnamese places consists of thin shredded cabbage with onions and other thinly sliced veggies to complement the salad. Dressing is vinegar based and it was pretty tasty here. Shrimp chips are provided to use as a vessel for the salad for a crunch. I wish they provided more. Only three shrimp chips were provided for the salad. The tofu skin crispy shrimp cakes are really good. It's a light shrimp cake. I was surprised as I was expecting a dense shrimp cake. The spongy shrimp cake contrasted well with the crispy fried tofu skin that wraps the shrimp partty. Tofu skin on dishes like this ends up with two textures, crispy initially then a slight chew once the skin is moist from the juices of the shrimp patty. I enjoyed this very much. The Banh khot is the reason why we wanted to stop here. Banh khot lately has been making its viral fame circuit. But being a street comfort food it has a place in my heart. The shrimp banh hot here is a bit more in the plain side, being just the banh khot shell and a whole shrimp. I think some other places also has a bit of ground pork and onions mixture. The shell was flavorful with a coco nutty essence. If you dislike coconut then this might not be you're favorite but that's usual for this dish. My family makes it without but this version is still very tasty. Id come back if im in the area and wanted some Vietnamese street food snacks.

The roti was drenched in oil. The papaya salad didn't have chopped peanuts. The drunken beef spaghetti made you wonder if the requirement was to be literally drunk to make it. The calamari were tiny, the kind you'd expect at a typical boba snack shop--not up to par for a $$$ restaurant. We live in the Bay Area. First time trying this restaurant, and honestly, I'm not usually a big fan of hotpot -- but this place completely changed my mind! You get to build your own hotpot just the way you like it, and the whole experience felt so fun and unique. The service was great -- everything was clearly labeled, fresh, and well-stocked. The staff were attentive and made sure all the ingredients stayed full the entire time I was there. The restaurant itself is super clean and has a nice, comfortable layout -- not too big or too small. I really liked the sauce bar, which had plenty of options to create your perfect dipping sauce to go with your hotpot. The food was delicious, and there was a great selection of broths, meats, and toppings to choose from. Overall, I'd give this restaurant a solid 4/5 stars. I'll definitely be back -- just might be a little more careful about how much I load up my bowl next time! It was a bit pricey for my portion, but honestly, it was worth every bite. The staff were friendly, accommodating, and made the whole experience even better. read more

Last week my friend and I came here for a meal. We both really love malatang, so I was genuinely excited to try this place, but it turned out to be one of the most disappointing malatang experiences I've ever had. The soup base was shockingly bland no depth of flavor, almost as if no seasoning had been added at all, and completely lacking the rich, comforting taste you'd expect from a proper hotpot. The meats were another letdown. I ordered lamb and lean beef slices, and both were dry, tough, and overcooked, making them unpleasant to eat. Even the freshness of some ingredients was questionable, which is concerning for a place serving hotpot. To make matters worse, the overall experience felt rushed yet disorganized. The staff seemed uninterested in helping or ensuring that customers enjoyed their meals. For the price, the quality and service fell far short of my expectations. Sadly, I won't be coming back, and I would not recommend it to anyone looking for authentic flavorful malatang . read more

Stopped by here for lunch after shopping at the Livermore Outlets -- just across the street at Oriental Pearl Plaza, and wow, what a great find! Tried the new malatang (spicy hot pot) place and loved it. Tons of fresh ingredients to choose from -- beef, mushrooms, tofu, lotus root, greens, and more. The broth was rich and flavorful, and you can customize the spice level to your liking. Super fast service, clean setup, and the price? Unbeatable for the quality and portion size. It's perfect if you're looking for something comforting, quick, and delicious. Definitely coming back next time I'm in the area. Mala Town in Pleasanton is a solid spot for customizable, authentic Sichuan dry pot. If you're into spicy food that actually hits, this hot pot spot is legit. The broth comes out bubbling like it means business, but it's the good kind of heat that makes you sweat and smile. I was beyond intrigued, so I had to try it. First of all, I loved the portion sizes. They were really nice and generous. We ordered 2 pots to share among the 3 of us, and I thought it was a great amount of food for all three of us. I decided to try their Spicy & Fragrant with beef brisket, and another pot with Traditional Sauce with chicken. Both meat options were fantastic. The chicken was very tender and thinly sliced, while the beef brisket was also very nice and tender. As for the sauces, the Spicy & Fragrant really reminded me of Sichuan mala peppercorn flavor, while the Traditional Sauce was a great non spicy option with just a little hint of more sweetness compared to the other one. I liked them both, and I think ordering both was the way to go because the Spicy & Fragrant could be a tad too spicy on its own but mixing it with the Traditional Sauce was a perfect middle ground for me. In addition to the meat, I thought it was a really excellent idea that they put thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom of the pot, allowing them to absorb all of that delicious sauce. Yum!!! Those potato slices were absolutely fantastic. I also found it really interesting that they mixed corn into their rice. The ambience of the restaurant was really nice too. We went there on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy. I loved the high ceiling, which made the restaurant feel really spacious. Service was also really nice. So, since I wasn't able to find a check in for that market, I had to come here to sing their praises. 6 Vegan Potstickers at the market are $13. I recommend spending the $1 for chili oil. Not sure what they charge at the restaurant for these fried pockets of deliciousness, but I tell you if these taste this good at a farmers market, packaged in a box, and I wait 10 minutes before I find a seat in the hospital cafeteria, and it still tastes this good, the restaurant must be out of this world. The wrapper has a great thickness and offers a sticky and chewy bite. I ordered the braised chicken noodles with sauce instead of soup, and the "sauce" was basically some clear coating that was blessed with just the essence of spices and salt. The braised chicken thigh was not only grisly, sparse, but the meat was also super DRY. Braising is supposed to make meat moist, if you cook it properly. When I asked if could have some chili oil, I was told that it cost $1... If you can't bother to season your food then you should at least offer condiments for free! It basically tasted like someone had had dropped my food on the floor, gave it a rinse under the water tap, then slapped it into a to-go container. My friend got the Zha Jiang noodles. While that looked more appetizing, she said hers was super bland as well. The wontons in chili oil were a joke. Not only was it not spicy AT ALL, it was very bland and the meat mixture inside was dry. The best thing we ordered was the smashed cucumber salad, which again was mild and bland. The only thing saving that dish was the minimal amount of salt, sugar, and vinegar they actually used in it. Basically another watered down dish. I had high hopes for this place based on reviews, that it's a small locally owned restaurant, and the fact that with so few menu items that each dish would be decent, if not outstanding. I'd have to say this place has a lot to figure out in the way of quality control as well as revamping their recipes. Hand pulled noodles are worthless if you smother them with flavorless subpar gloop or stuff and top with gross dry meat concoctions. It's a fairly large restaurant so there was no wait on a Sunday evening around 7pm. You order on the iPad at your table which is nice and easy. I wasn't the biggest fan of the spicy sauce on the half & half king tonkotsu; it was fairly sweet. I'd recommend getting sauce on side too if you were to get the spicy sauce since it's on the thinner side and was making the katsu not as crispy. The tonkotsu itself was on the flatter side and the coating fell apart when you cut it. It was cooked well though and was huge. My wife got the rose pasta. It is tomato based and reminded me of pizza, especially with the cheese. I believe this was one of the more expensive dishes too. If you're in a pinch and need tonkatsu right away, Golden Wang is good. However, if you have time to wait I'd opt for Yumee.

The portions are really big and they give some sides on the side as well. There is an iPad where you order and then the server brings you food. They need more Korean spots out here and this is a great start! The restaurant was spacious and clean! Parking is plentiful as it shared a parking lot with other spaces.

We can get him to eat broccoli too since they make the best sautéed broccoli we've ever had. Everything on the menu is delicious. My husband loves the scallion pancakes and their beef potstickers. The house special stir-fried noodles were SO good, easily one of my favorites from everything we tried! The black truffle veggie fried rice really surprised me because it's not something I would normally order, but I ended up loving it way more than I expected. Definitely recommend giving it a try! We also got a few different dumplings, which were all super flavorful, and I absolutely loved the garlic green beans too!! The staff was also genuinely so sweet and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. They just recently opened, so definitely stop by and show them some love! Already looking forward to coming back and trying more of their menu!!
