I love trying new restaurants, so when we drove by and saw a long line outside a newly opened mala tang spot at Pacific Pearl, we had to check it out. They were running a grand opening special--50% off through Monday, July 28--so the line was understandably wild. At first, I was a little concerned about how long it would take to get seated. But I have to commend the staff: they were attentive, fast-paced, and incredibly organized. Special shoutout to the guy managing the line--thanks to him, we were seated in about 20-30 minutes, which was impressive given the crowd. The ingredients were fresh and there was a wide variety: meats, dumplings, meatballs, vegetables, and different types of noodles. You can choose from six broth flavors. Their house special broth is the beef bone broth, but I decided to be a little adventurous and went with the chicken fish maw broth. The chicken fish maw broth didn't taste fishy at all--the chicken flavor was more prominent, and the broth had a smooth, comforting flavor. I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for something that's not too creamy or too spicy. I also tried my parents' beef bone broth, which was pretty good, and the Sichuan broth, which was okay but leaned a bit too spicy for my taste. I definitely prefer the chicken fish maw broth personally. Overall, it was a satisfying dinner, and I really enjoyed the food. The only downside was the sauce bar--it was a bit chaotic. A lot of condiments like green onions, cilantro, and soy sauce had run out and weren't being restocked quickly enough, likely because the staff was overwhelmed with the crowd. That said, it was totally understandable given the grand opening rush. The staff was friendly and really handled the pressure well. read more

We went during grand opening with the first lb free for the first 30 people. I tried the tom yum which is really good. The sauce station was good too, There are interesting items I don't normally see in other hot pot line before. I couldn't take pics because the line was constantly busy while we were there. Everyone was helpful there. After we fill our bowls they assigned our table. So if you plan to sit with a big group and everyone did not come together you need to let them know. They'll help assign you to a suitable table, They did run out of lean beef about 20 people in, not sure if that's because they're overwhelmed by the amount of customers during grand opening. The veggies cut were rather big in my opinion I wish they were cut smaller as they're harder to eat. They're located a couple spaces down from 85 degrees bakery at pacific pearl. I usually go for AYCE hotpot, but saw this viral spot open near me. We went on a Sunday around 3pm for lunch and it was not too busy. The line to build your hot pot wasn't long and service was quick! Lots of options for veggies, noodles, toppings, meats, and drinks. Aside from your bowl, you can make your own dipping sauce -- just like other hot pot places. It was a great and filling lunch! I LOVE the Mala Town in Milpitas so I was excited to see another one open up by the outlets. I visited on a Thursday around dinnertime and the restaurant was fairly empty - no wait! The way it works is that you grab a bowl, some tongs, then add whatever you want to eat as your heart desires. Compared to the Milpitas location, I thought the variety of meats and toppings were on par. This location did feel a bit messier however... they weren't refilling things regularly in the bowl area or the sauce bar. The sauce bar was a bit of a mess and the meats all looked lazily/messily cut. Apart from that... everything tasted as you'd expect from Mala Town. I'd recommend the medium spice level. Keep in mind the mild is still a bit spicy if you don't have a good spice tolerance, too! LOTS of seating here which is nice. Parking can be a mess on busy weekends. read more

First time here and I'd say I would come back for some solid soup. Very spacious and casual, would come here with friends for sure. Great selection, maybe need more on the meat side and their meat quality is okay. However, love their other sides like their variety of vegetables, tofu and fish balls. Just know, the spicier your soup, the more oily it is, but thats the only trade off. They have a decent sauce bar and love what they use for their soups, great at retaining heat. Me and my partner got the sichuan soup and I got their new beef bone soup. Good recommendations, both tasty. Maybe it needs more depth, but again, decent overall and the service is nice. Food was great! My boyfriend and I were afraid it wasn't enough broth based on the pictures and reviews on here but I believe it's just a different pot/bowl compared to similar places! It was just the right amount. The bowls may look small in the picture but, it's more wide than depth and it has a generous amount of broth. I would say I do prefer this type of plating than a regular bowl. We also came around Saturday afternoon with seeing only few people inside already, not as busy as I thought it would be. They played some old nostalgic music which we were both very appreciative about haha. The staff was very nice, have no complaints for service. Overall first experience here was 10/10. Wanted to try someplace new before shopping at the outlets, so decided to give this place a try. I didn't like the classic bone broth, which ruined it for me. It was extremely creamy, like cheesy?? You could literally smell it, it was so overpowering. I think "creamy" or "cheese" broth would have been a better name for it. It did not taste like any bone broth I've had before. I tried my bf's mild signature bone broth and that tasted like most other mala bone broths, just not numbingly hot since it was mild (which I really appreciate the they allow you to choose your spice level for that one, as I cannot handle a lot of spice). Meat selection was average (but I did like that they had a lean beef and fatty beef), but I felt produce, seafood, and noodle selection was more limited than other places. I appreciated that they didn't have a minimum weight because I usually get under 1 lb and that way I can get my kids their own bowl to share (instead of having to put their stuff in my bowl and picking a broth based on their preferences, instead of my own). Interior nice and clean. Service meh. Sauce bar was sufficient. TLDR; I would recommend Zhangliang Malatang instead because I think their broth is better and they have a bit more selection. read more
